姬黎氏家族 (Ji-Li’s Family)

BLACK Class Status Ji Li’s grandfather was a 房東 (landlord). His beliefs and rightist mind frame were passed down from generation to generation. Ji-Li says she is influenced by her father which means she is a 右傾 (rightist) just like her him and her grandfather!

Shun and avoid Ji-Li if you don’t want to disappoint our beloved Chairman Mao.

Cultural Revolution

What’s Going to Happen Next My name is Ji-Li. My class status has ruined my life forever. I was bullied in my elementary school because of it.

家 庭

My name is Yin Lan Lan. My class status has improved my life tremendously. I was chosen to be part of the Red Successors.

My loyalty is to my family It’s a definite decision. I must not let the Cultural Revolution get between me and my family. My family is too precious to forget (family) and too rare to replace

My loyalty is to Chairman Mao. It’s a definite decision. I must not let my personal matters get between me and the Cultural Revolution. Chairman Mao is too precious to forget and too rare to replace

Tears of sorrow roll down my cheeks as I am forced to attend struggle meetings. I can’t imagine what going to happen next.

Tears of joy roll down my cheeks as I imaging Chairman Mao smiling upon me. I can’t imagine what’s going to happen next.

Chairman Mao Wants YOU To Become a Red Guard.

Diary of Grandma Cao November 4, 1966

Dear Diary, Today Ji-Li came up to me and asked me if my son was a rightist and if my husband was a landlord. Oh, poor thing. I had to tell her the truth. She’s probably bullied at school for her black class status. Her class status is going to restrict her from doing the things she wants to do. I should have told her instead of having to find out in front of her whole class. That must have been really embarrassing. I asked my son to go on a walk with the kids and talk about it. March 27, 1967 Dear Diary, Yesterday was a horrible, horrible night. The Red Guards came and searched through our house for four olds. My son and daughter-in-law must have not burned the photos completely because they found a knife with a picture of Fourth Aunt and we are direct relatives. Practically everything was taken away from us. This was probably a horrifying experience for the kids. Everything was scattered all over the floor. It took us 3 days just to clean the mess up. May 10, 1968 Dear Diary, Today we got ransacked again but this time they came to tell us that my son was considered an escaped landlord and that they were looking for the letter that my daughter-in-law and Uncle Tian wrote. When I told ThinFace that I didn’t know what he was talking about, he slapped me straight across the face. It still hurts. They also took everything from our house and all we have left is a desk. I pray to Allah that things will get better.

I was born on May 10, 2002 in Jackson Memorial Hospital. I enjoy dancing, singing and spending time with my friends. The memoir, Red Scarf Girl, written by Jiang Ji-Li changed my opinions about the Cultural Revolution drastically. I used to think that it is possible to create a community where everyone is equal. But now, I realize that throughout history, society has always picked on people’s race, religion or beliefs. For example, the Holocaust. Hitler picked mainly on Jews. Another example is segregation which picked on blacks because of their race. After reading Red Scarf Girl, I also realized how much freedom we have in America, especially freedom of speech.
