Randy Anderson

Bad Soc Beginning, Good Soc End

By: Anushka Bhatti

Bad Soc Beginning, Good Soc Ending

Novel: The Outsiders Character: Randy Anderson 6 word memoir: Bad Soc Beginning, Good Soc Ending

Randy Anderson is one of the characters in the novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The six word memoir fits the individual character. Randy Anderson is classified as a Soc. He is a rebellious teenager because that is what the majority of the Socs are known for, being rebellious. The first time the reader meets Randy he is with Bob when they jump Ponyboy. Randy is a Soc and Ponyboy is a Greaser, two rivalry enemies. This example explains that Randy and violence go together like shoes and socks. Furthermore, Randy chooses to make friends like Bob and not the good Socs! Not a very good choice for Randy on his part. Later on, he chose the hard life, by fighting and being one of the wilder Socs. After that, another time Randy comes in the novel is when Bob and his trail Ponyboy and Johnny at around 2 A. M. when they are leaving the vacant lot and then they spot the Socs blue mustang trailing them. Ponyboy can tell they are drunk. Randy and the other Socs jump Ponyboy and Johnny and Bob throws Ponyboy into a fountain. Johnny doesn’t want Ponyboy to drown, therefore, he pulls out his switchblade killing Bob, and saving Ponyboy. Randy might have not done the action like Bob, but this incident shows Randy’s true colors in different ways. Randy chooses to be this type of person. Randy’s character shows that something must be triggering him to do these harsh devise ideas. Perhaps, it could be the drinking and smoking or it could just be he is abused or a neglected child at home. Finally, at the end of the novel, Randy changes his personality or, so he claims. He states that he detests drinking now, that he won’ t get into anymore fights or trouble. Maybe, the loss of so many deaths in this novel that were close to him changed him. Randy now is a better person because he changed his ways. Randy is now a different Soc. The improved Randy Anderson brings a great conclusion in the outstanding book The Outsiders.

Dallas Winston was called Dally throughout the book and was known to be “tougher, colder, meaner” than the rest of the gang. Dally has blue eyes and his hair is blonde. Throughout the book Dally was very close friends with Johnny Cade who was like his brother. In the book, Dally experiences both high and low points of life. His high point was his courage because he had saved Johnny from the burning church. Also, Dally helps Johnny Cade and Ponyboy Curtis run away by giving them a roll of bills which was $50, a location to hide, and how to get there. His frustration and anger led him to his low points which were: going to jail as a child, robbing a grocery store, and ultimately his death due to the loss of Johnny Cade. Ponyboy Curtis had described him by saying, “Dally risking his life for us, trying to keep Johnny out of trouble.” Due to the death of Johnny, Dally had robbed a grocery store knowing that he could get caught or possibly killed. Dally’s death was mainly caused by when he pointed a gun which wasn’t loaded. Finally his death was a tragedy because Ponyboy Curtis said, “He died violent and young and desperate, just like we all know he’d die someday.” Instead of dying as a hero, he died as a delinquent.

Johnny Cade Abused Mind. Dead Soul. Dead Body

By Elsa Veiga Marchal

Abused Mind. Dead Soul. Dead Body

Novel::The Outsiders Character: Johnny Cade Six Word Memoir: Abused Mind. Dead Soul. Dead Body

The memoir fits because at the beginning of the story Johnny was very quiet and very jumpy because his parent were very abusive, for example his dad would always beat him up, his mom would ignore him and he got beaten close to death by the socs. After going into the hospital for being in the fire and the logs breaking his back Johnny started to give up. He sulked a lot and only asked for Ponyboy, and Dally, he also really didn't talk much anymore and was slowly giving up. One of the biggest climaxes of the story was when Johnny had died and Ponyboy was having a mental breakdown denying that Johnny had acctually died.

Two Bit Matthews By Michael Zelenov

The Responsible but Very Carefree Joker.

The Responsible but Very Carefree Joker.

Novel: The Outsiders Character: Two Bit Matthews Six Word Memoir: The Responsible but Very Carefree Joker.

The memoir “The Responsible but Very Carefree Joker” represents Two Bit Matthews because he likes to joke around. He also feels very responsible for everyone but yet, there is a part of him that is absolutely carefree. An example of Two Bit joking around is a situation when Ponyboy and Johnny bleached their hair. Two Bit called Ponyboy a “blonde-headed monkey.” Also his responsibility is shown when Johnny and Ponyboy were playing a dangerous game. They were putting their finger to the end of a lighted cigarette and checking who would pull his finger away first. Two Bit caught them and said that if they ever played that game again, they would be in big trouble. Finally Two Bit showed that he was carefree when he did not even bother to say his real name “which by the way” is Keith. Another example of him being carefree is when somebody said something about him, he was alright about it and would agree, even if they had said something disturbing about him. To my mind in this paragraph we find a great description of Two Bit Matthew’s features. He loved to joke, he was very responsible for the younger kids, but he never cared what people thought about him.
