NEIGHBORHOODS Gig Harbor has always inspired dreams of waterfront living. However, many exciting types of properties exist here, from country acreage and horse properties to carefree condo-style and country club living.

Gig Harbor’s housing market is definitely trending upward and has options to meet a wide range of wants and needs. Gig Harbor North and Harbor Hill are experiencing tremendous growth as you’ll see if you drive along Borgen Boulevard from State Route 16 east to Peacock Hill Avenue. The city has widened the road and added another roundabout as new homes—both single- and multifamily—seem to sprout overnight. One north-end subdivision—The Ridge at Gig Harbor—is nearly built out, with new homes from the mid-$200s. Close by is Harbor Crossing, a quiet neighborhood that includes a mix of townhomes, duplexes, and single-family homes. These neighborhoods, along with the other new developments along Borgen, are high on

the walk-ability scale with close proximity to the Tom Taylor Family YMCA, Costco, and The Home Depot. In addition to the new housing, land is being prepared for a new park with four soccer ﬁelds and Heron’s Key, Gig Harbor’s newest retirement community. The downtown waterfront area, which

TACOMA NARROWS AIRPORT

Tacoma Narrows Airport is a convenient, accessible transportation hub for the entire region. Pierce County, in partnership with PenMet Parks, bought the airport from the city of Tacoma in 2008; it is used primarily for small-business jet travel and general aviation. The airport services approximately 52,000 small-jet takeoffs and landings per year, offering jet fuel and oil; aircraft storage, parking, and tie-downs; hangars for lease; and a new restaurant. The Hub at Gig Harbor is the second Hub location, patterned after a successful brewpub and pizza restaurant in Tacoma’s Stadium District. With outdoor seating and a family atmosphere, The Hub is the only restaurant in the vicinity and is a popular place to watch the varied aircraft come and go. A newly formed citizen nonproﬁt, Friends of the Tacoma Narrows Airport, is working to develop an airport observation area where people of all ages will be able to watch takeoffs and landings, listen to tower communications, and, perhaps, enjoy a picnic. The airport also serves as a place to host community events such as Tacoma Freedom Fair’s Wings & Wheels, which features airplane ﬂy-bys, rides, and a car and hot rod show. It also serves as a central hub for the Gig Harbor Basket Brigade, which provides supplies for holiday meals to nearly 500 local families. The Tacoma City Marathon also stages and starts at the airport. At least a dozen businesses operate at Tacoma Narrows Airport, and a new master plan is now underway. The last master plan was completed in 2003 when the airport was still owned by the city of Tacoma. Proposed future developments will be evaluated from an aviation and community perspective.

West Side is one of Gig Harbor’s busiest commercial neighborhoods, with many established businesses including two medical parks owned and operated by MultiCare and Franciscan health systems. The airport is a busy hub for corporate jets and general aviation, which includes a new restaurant, and companies that offer ﬂight instruction, scenic flights, maintenance, corporate jet rentals, and more. Gig Harbor North is a growing commercial district that provides one-stop shopping. Major retailers include Target, Home Depot, Costco, Budget Blinds, and Walgreens, which are mingled in with an Albertson’s grocery store and casual restaurants when you’re in the mood for a quick sandwich, pizza with friends, or frozen yogurt after a workout. This shopping area covers needs ranging from clothing, footwear, and pet supplies to home improvement and housewares. You’ll also find several new residential developments in Gig Harbor North along with the state-of-theart Tom Taylor Family YMCA facility, which provides recreational opportunities for all ages. ■

Pierce Transit’s Get Around Gig Harbor! PT Trolley project, which had its inaugural, trial run during the summer of 2013 was, by all measures, a great success. So successful, in fact, that it will be reinstated this summer. The highly visible, red trolleys will roll through streets and byways again during the summer months, contributing to around-town mobility and tying together the various business districts. The Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce Economic Development Committee was the catalyst to get this project rolling. They partnered with the city of Gig Harbor, Uptown, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance, and Pierce Transit—creating the so-called Community Investment Team—to help plan and subsidize the project. The enthusiastic response by Gig Harbor residents and visitors showed that this type of limited public transportation works here and may be feasible in other communities as well. Final ridership numbers for the Route 101 PT Trolley from July 9 to September 28 show that the average number of weekly riders was 2,376. Total boardings during that same time equaled 28,514, which was consistently above the project’s target ridership. In 2012, during the same time period and on the same route with regular PT buses, daily ridership was about 160 riders per day or 1,120 per week. Overall, the ﬁnal numbers showed that ridership for the project’s duration were double last year’s numbers.

Personal enrichment comes in all forms on the Gig Harbor Peninsula. For instance, dog lovers will be happy to know that there’s a new place to take Fido and let him romp around off leash. Rotary Bark Park is the first of its kind in unincorporated Pierce County. The 15-acre area includes more than a mile of fenced trails so you and your dog can enjoy the outdoors together without the tether. A second offleash area in a park near the Tacoma Narrows Bridge is on the drawing board with plans to open in early 2014. History lovers can take a stroll into the past at the Harbor History Museum, which sits at the water’s edge downtown and pays homage to the area’s maritime heritage. Hands-on exhibits convey what it was like for Gig Harbor’s earliest residents, who established thriving logging,

Gig Harbor is well known for its highly active arts community; Sunset magazine named Gig Harbor’s monthly art walk one of the ﬁve best in the Northwest. A number of galleries line the downtown area featuring local and nationally known artists. And a city-sponsored outdoor gallery features six art installations—on display and proposed—located in the same waterfront area. Stroll the harbor and see how many you can ﬁnd. Connie’s Clock is another new and important landmark located at the Bogue Viewing Platform on North Harborview Drive. Conrad Schick was a vital member of the business community and one of the founders of the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce. He was well known in Gig Harbor as a business owner and volunteer. He died in 2010, and the Gig Harbor Morning Rotary donated the permanent memorial with a plaque in memory of Connie. Let’s not forget music and theater! The Peninsula Youth Orchestra provides instruction and performance opportunities for young string musicians, and actors and performers of all ages can audition for live-stage community theater. Two companies—Paradise Theatre and Encore Theater—produce a full slate of professional-quality performances for the community’s enjoyment. The Galaxy Theatres multiplex

shows ﬁrst-run movies for the whole family and is home to the Gig Harbor Film Festival, now in its seventh year. The festival focuses on independent films that promote understanding, tolerance, and global awareness. Actress Lindsay Wagner, perhaps best known for her Emmy-winning portrayal of Jamie Sommers in the 1970s television series The Bionic Woman, appeared in 2013 to accept the Pay It Forward award for her long-standing dedication to and promotion of the ﬁlm industry. There are so many festivals throughout the year, you’ll always be able to find a reason to get out of the house for a fun family outing. Music in the park, a farmers market, and outdoor family movies round out summer activities; however, holidays throughout the year are also cause for community celebration. Downtown trick or treating, Christmas tree lighting and Santa visits, and Easter egg hunts are traditional Gig Harbor events. ■

THE MARITIME GIG

The Maritime Gig Festival is the biggest party of the year, just ask anyone who lives here. For 15 years the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce has worked hard to ensure that the community continues to enjoy the many events that comprise this harbinger of summer. The weekend kicks off on Saturday morning with a pancake breakfast and the rollicking Pirates of the Peninsula Yo Ho Harbor Grand Parade along Harborview Drive, which brings thousands of people into the downtown waterfront area as both participants and spectators. Bring sunscreen and a hat; there’s so much to see and do you’ll want to stay all day both days. There’s a family Fun Run and a Children’s Fair, which features live entertainment and many fun hands-on activities—everything from live sea creature “touch” tanks to creative art projects and interactive skits. And kids of all ages love to explore the watercraft at the Antique and Classic Yacht Festival and, new last year, cool cars at the Wheels on the Water Car Show. Live music at Skansie Brothers Park is one of the festival’s biggest draws. The Shy Boys is a perennial favorite, a group that covers diverse performers from The Monkees to Johnny Cash, and local dance and musical groups make appearances, too. The entire event comes to a close on Sunday afternoon with the traditional Blessing of the Fleet, featuring a procession from St. Nicholas Catholic Church to the harbor, where the local ﬁshing ﬂeet receives a blessing that marks the beginning of its working season.

RECREATION Gig Harbor, a historic ﬁshing and logging town and mile-long scenic bay with easy access to Puget Sound, is a mecca for boating and water-sports enthusiasts.

Many people live here for the opportunities afforded by the peninsula’s protected harbors and bays, safe havens for sailing, kayaking, and paddle boarding. Water sports are not the only recreational activities available here, however. Whether your passion is hiking, biking, fishing, boating, or golfing, you’ll find it in Gig Harbor. Numerous marinas line the harbor. Most provide private moorage; however, Arabella’s Landing offers transient moorage and a pump-out station. Two city docks— Jerisich Dock and Maritime Pier—are both free for limited stays. Jerisich Dock is centrally located next to Skansie Brothers Park and has a pump-out station. Both are close to restaurants, shops, and galleries in the waterfront area. The city has recently acquired additional prime waterfront property and is considering the pos-

GIG HARBOR RACE TEAM PADDLES TO SUCCESS

Kayaks, paddleboards, and boats of all sizes ply the waters of the harbor year-round. In fact, the Gig Harbor Canoe and Kayak Race Team is based here, and team members can be seen practicing in the harbor nearly every day of the year. The team comprises young paddlers ages 9 to 18 who want to learn the sport of Olympic canoeing and kayaking. Gig Harborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s kayakers were national champions in Oklahoma City in 2013 and in Seattle in 2012, and several young Gig Harbor athletes have represented the United States at the Junior World Championship level. Three team members, who have been with the team since they were 12 years old, are now training at the Olympic training facility in Oklahoma City; watch for one of these local athletes to represent their community and country in the 2016 Summer Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

Whether they move on to Olympic level competition or not, Gig Harbor youths are fortunate to be coached by the best in the country. Head coach Alan Anderson has been voted USA Canoe/Kayak Coach of the Year for the last two years.

The Active Retirement & Senior Club of Gig Harbor, located in the Jim & Carolyn Milgard Family HOPE Center, is a membership-based organization where you can join old friends, or make new ones, over coffee, lunch, or a monthly potluck. The club offers a full slate of recreational and cultural activities— from woodcarving and Tai chi to card games and bingo. Many Gig Harbor seniors enjoy the active, all-ages environment at the Tom Taylor Family YMCA. Meet friends for a latte, take a walk indoors, make waves in a Silver Splash water aerobics class, or volunteer and become part of a fun, dynamic community of ﬁtness-minded folks. Residential retirement facilities also have their own full calendar of activities that include ﬁeld trips, clubs, beanbag baseball leagues, and live entertainment. If you’re excited about the opportunity to learn something new, consider taking a class—acting, painting, yoga, or a new language— through a collaborative adult program offered by PenMet Parks and Tacoma Community College.
