SAY ‘I DO’
Beautiful setting, unique venues, convenient location, small-town atmosphere, extensive professional services — Gig Harbor has the perfect formula for an unforgettable day. It’s no wonder the town continues to receive national attention, including being named last year as one of the five best small towns in America by Smithsonian magazine. Here are just a few reasons Gig Harbor is consistently the top choice for one of the most memorable occasions in your life:
A romantic, charming backdrop that will make not only the bride and groom feel special, but their guests, too;
Many hidden but dramatic venues allowing for a private yet conveniently located “retreat”;
Choices from beachfront and English gardens to classic elegance and rustic Northwest;
UN MOMENTO PHOTOGRAPHY ©
Several options of overnight accommodations for guests who want to linger and enjoy a mini getaway;
A broad range of services, from florists and caterers to wedding photographers;
A relaxed, slower-pace atmosphere to help create long-lasting memories;
Plenty of recreational opportunities, from beach walking and kayaking, to shopping and bird watching.’
For ideas and inspiration, go to www. MeetInGigHarbor.com, where you can also contact some of the venues to help get your planning underway.

Plus, getting here is as convenient as you need it, thanks to Gig Harbor’s proximity to a major highway system, an international airport and Amtrak trains — not to mention its own airport for private and charter planes and its many marinas for guest mooring. Whatever your needs, you’ll find a gorgeous setting framed by the majestic Mount Rainier, a small-town atmosphere with friendly merchants, access to incredible recreational opportunities and all the amenities you’ll need for a successful event.

THE HEART OF THE CITY Once you visit Gig Harbor’s downtown, you’ll understand why the city has been called a maritime village. But the nickname of a sleepy fishing town is more of a tribute than an actual description. Sure, there are hints throughout the waterfront about Gig Harbor’s quiet days, and downtown does pay tribute to the town’s heritage. But there’s nothing sleepy about it — downtown Gig Harbor is a vibrant destination where commercial and recreational activities, history and community events all happily collide. Quaint shops sprinkled along the waterfront and beyond cover hobbies such as fishing, bird watching and skateboarding, and offer hours of browsing for gifts, home décor, jewelry, apparel and antiques — the list goes on. No matter what time of the year you visit, you’ll find something to do. U© JOHN PLEA

Summer brings outdoor movies and concerts, as well as several festivals and a farmers market. Winter includes a lighted boat parade and Santa visits. Fall and spring celebrate the seasons with unique events such as a beer festival and a dog event. Then, there’s year-round fun, from family-friendly art walks and pottery painting, to beer and wine tastings for some adult time. And for history buffs, all roads lead to the waterfront, where you’ll find a state-of-the-art maritime museum, a historic boat-building shop and self-guided walking tours — and that’s just for starters. Indulge your sweet tooth or your craving for microbrew; rent a kayak, paddle board or a boat; hop on a tour boat to see Gig Harbor from the water; visit the many art galleries for just the right artsy “souvenir.” And in between, treat the kids to ice cream, grab a cup of latte or a home-made muffin, or stop in at one of the many restaurants for a casual or finedining atmosphere. Whatever your mood, downtown will gladly oblige — whether you arrive by car, foot or boat.

DINING OUT Gig Harbor and the surrounding area have transformed in recent years into a great dining destination with a unique and delicious mix of options. HISTORY AND GREAT FOOD AT
If you’re in the mood for something original for breakfast or lunch, drop in at NetShed No. 9, Gig Harbor’s newest addition to downtown. Owners Thad Lyman and his wife, Katie Doherty, have been in the business for a long time and are responsible for another downtown dining destination, Brix 25. At NetShed No. 9, you’ll find some familiar names on the menu, like waffles, paninis and biscuits. But take a closer look and you’ll realize that each item has a twist. Thad Lyman, who is the creative brain behind the menu, loves to show off with bold flavors and unique spinoffs on old classics. He says flavor and technique are important, but just as important is for his dishes to be fun. The french toast and the breakfast burger are two examples. Frenchy’s French Toast, one of the most popular items, is made with crème brulee batter and topped with Chantilly and Bartlett pear fruit compote. The Sausage Breakfast Burger is the ultimate English muffin “sandwich” with sausage, bacon, fried egg and cheese. It’s a good thing NetShed No. 9 serves breakfast all day long! (Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.)

Everything on the menu is made from scratch, even the hot chocolate and the English muffins. The food is fast — the goal is to have it prepared within 15 minutes — and nothing is fried. The menu includes clam chowder, waffles made in 100-year-old cast-iron waffle makers (kept warm in the oven), several kinds of paninis and stuffed biscuits, among other things. Don’t miss the cinnamon roll skillet — order it to go if you must.
Summer dining comes with a bonus: NetShed has the biggest dining deck in the Harbor. Enjoy the warm sunshine outdoors while watching sailboats come and go. The atmosphere is family friendly but adults can enjoy beer and wine, too. The name, NetShed, is not coincidental. The restaurant is located in what used to be “Netshed No. K” in local inventory. No. 9 comes from its location: It was the ninth netshed as the fishing boats

returned home. The décor pays tribute to maritime history with Coast Guard maps, nets, purse seiners’ blueprints and other memorabilia. If you sit at the bar, check out the counter — you may (or may not) recognize a plank, which was rescued from a wrecked ship. The restaurant owners say they wanted to create a place that fits the community. Which means whether you’re local or visiting, NetShed has a seat just for you.

And now, the new owners, chef Scott Fuller and his wife, Gail, are kicking things up a notch. The couple, who took over the restaurant in March, brought more than 30 years of industry experience to Green.House and have been adding their personal touches to the menu and the atmosphere. Steak and seafood take the center stage on the menu and Chef Scott likes to feature seasonal items that are sourced from sustainable farms, ranches and fisheries. He kept all the menu favorites but added a few things of his own — from award-winning recipes he has perfected over the years, such as crab cakes made from fresh crab. The menu will rotate every season. Summer, for example, will showcase Alaska’s bounty: salmon from various rivers. Toward the end of August, the salmon will come from local and Washington state spots. Once the salmon season is over in the fall, seafood such as oysters will be served and winter will bring things like comfort foods. Part of the appeal is the variety. Lunch choices vary from pasta and salads to burgers and seafood entrees, and the lunch hours have been extended to 4 p.m. There’s also a “small and bigger bites” menu for the bar and the patio, with items priced in the $6-$14 range. The casually elegant atmosphere m a k e s G re e n . Ho u s e a p e r f e c t destination, whether it’s a business lunch or a romantic dinner. There are two fireplaces—one inside and another on the patio (open April through midSeptember) — and an extensive beverage menu that includes spirits, boutique wines and microbrews. Specialty cocktails are being added to the Happy Hour menu and a Wine Night and other events are in the works. The Fullers love the “everybody knows everybody” atmosphere of Green.House and say they are looking forward to getting to know the community and visitors alike.

Gig Harbor has a good network of bicycle-friendly paths that includes paved lanes, shared-use trails and bicycle lanes. The relatively low traffic, the scenery and the mix of easy and challenging roads make this an attractive area for bikers. Stop by Old Town Bicycle on Kimball Drive for maps, gear and minor repairs, or make an appointment if your bike needs more extensive work. If you love the idea of scenic “touring” on your bike, check out the annual Ride Around Puget Sound (RAPSody) event in August. The two-day, 85-mile experience includes riding over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and through Gig Harbor; participants may also opt for one day instead. Another organized ride through the area is The Peninsula Metric in June, and if you’re looking for serious competition, check out the Gig Harbor Circuit Race that is part of the Lake Washington Velo Circuit Race Series.

AHOY!
DESTINATION: GIG HARBOR It’s no secret that one of the best views in Gig Harbor is from the water. That’s only one of many reasons that make this a popular destination for boaters. The idyllic waterfront scenery creates the perfect backdrop for a relaxed visit, but don’t let the quiet pace fool you — there are plenty of activities to enjoy while you drop the anchor in the bay. Boaters will find several shops within walking distance that offer staples ranging from groceries and supplies to wine for a sunset picnic and munchies for the pets. Below is a sampling of available services; go to gigharborguide. com for more, or ask any friendly downtown merchant.

FISHING AROUND
FISHING AROUND The Gig Harbor area is one of the best sought-after fishing spots in Puget Sound, thanks to its access to many water bodies and the variety of fish species. Fishing happens here almost all year round. Cutthroat trout is in abundance, as is salmon if you know where to look. Popular spots include Kopachuck State Park, the Olalla beach, Purdy Sand Spit, Minter Creek Hatchery and Bay Lake. And if you get tired of the local lakes and beaches, Gig Harbor-based guides will gladly swoop you away to one of region’s hot spots or major rivers and lakes. They’ll even outfit you with whatever you need, whether it’s gear or a water craft, and throw in some tips for best fishing.
HUGH MCMILLAN ©
If you’re feeling a little rusty, you can always start with a class. The Gig Harbor Fly Shop offers them year-round, with winter classes focused on skills like flytying and the summer ones complete with practice on local beaches. The shop is also your stop for any gear you need, including rentals of sturdy kayaks that are perfect for fishing. SAMANTH A

CHAMBERS BAY GOLF COURSE ©
U.S.OPEN IS COMING June 2015 will be a busy time for the Puget Sound area, as Pierce County-owned Chambers Bay Golf Course hosts the U.S. Open national golf championship. Located in University Place, just on the other side of the Tacoma Narrows from Gig Harbor, Chambers Bay is only the third municipally owned facility to have this honor bestowed upon it. More than 200,000 people are expected to descend on the area for the U.S. Open week of June 15-21. All local hotels and other overnight accommodations will be in high demand — and in shortage — during this exciting event. That means planning your trip early for the best and most convenient accommodations. Gig Harbor is the perfect place to stay during the U.S. Open. Not only are Gig Harbor’s local hotels the closest ones to the site, the drive from Gig Harbor is much less crowded. Plus, when you’re not out on the links watching the champions, you’ll find everything you need in town, from exquisite dining and shopping to recreational outlets — not to mention a relaxing atmosphere with gorgeous views and friendly locals. And if you find the urge for some hands-on golf action, we’ve got you covered: The Gig Harbor area boasts close to 10 golf courses, some right in town and some within a short drive. Go to gigharborguide.com for a complete list of places to stay and play including hotels, bed and breakfasts and vacation rentals.

MAN’S BEST FRIEND
TIDBIT: Merchants around Gig Harbor leave doggy water bowls outside their shops for thirsty pups.
MINDI LAROSE ©
GIG HARBOR CATERS TO CANINES Gig Harbor’s hospitality doesn’t extend only to two-legged visitors. Dogs of all breeds, sizes and inclinations are not only welcome but pampered — if they’re well-behaved, of course. The two main hotels, Wesley Inn and the Inn at Gig Harbor, are both pet-friendly, as are many of the bed & breakfasts. While visiting around town, doggies should also be on the lookout for the many friendly shops that stock up on free treats — all they have to do to get one is use their manners. When it’s time for exercise, pooches have plenty of choices. They can say hello to fellow dogs while strolling downtown. Or they can take their owners for a walk at any of the local parks, as long as they keep those owners

on the leash and remind them to pick up (complementary bags for scooping are available throughout town). Dogs not too fond of restrictions have their own place where they can freely play Frisbee or socialize with each other to their tails’ content. Thanks to a partnership among several local groups, Gig Harbor has a new offleash dog park, a piece of forest with more than a mile of trails and an open area. Leased from the Peninsula School District and managed by PenMet Parks, this fully-fenced area is located across Bujacich Road from McCormick Forest Park (park at Gig Harbor Fire and Medic One headquarters and go south from the parking lot). Gig Harbor loves its four-legged friends so much, it has an entire party for them every year. Harbor Hounds, hosted downtown each September, is an opportunity for dogs and owners alike to show off, meet each other and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Best kissers (the furry

kind), best tail-waggers and other talented dogs even get to take home some prizes. Several dog groomers are ready to pamper the dogs for any occasion, even if it’s “just because,” and pet lodges are on standby for those that need a little vacation from their humans. Of course, no visit would be complete without a little shopping. Discriminating dogs will find just about everything they need in town, from organic food and gourmet treats at Green Cottage Pets and Mud Bay, bandanas and blankets at Sophie’s Touch, to all sorts of toys and accessories are The Dog House, Petco and Pets & Pals.

Everyone at Mackert bends over backward to help us solve our problem and save us money. After years of dealing with a variety of auto repair businesses, I found what I was looking for. – John R. I trust Mackert Auto to work on my car because they are professional, honest, and thorough. I’ve referred my parents as well, and they saved money too! Thanks for watching out for us. – Meridith H.

THE KEY PENINSULA
A RURAL PARADISE
Gig Harbor’s rustic neighbor is a unique community that mingles an idyllic rural setting with a range of recreational possibilities, from bird watching to kayaking and boating. You’ll find views of the Olympic Mountains from Joemma Beach and of Mount Rainier from Penrose Point, both state parks with overnight camping and beach access. Several other parks offer abundant beaches, hiking, kayak access and playgrounds. Nicknamed the Key, the area is also home to several fishing hot spots. If you love history, don’t miss a stop at the Key Peninsula History Museum, or take a driving tour of the peninsula and

be on the lookout for historic markers at different landmarks. Also watch for signs for one of the many local farms, which sell fresh produce during the season. Additionally, the farms welcome visitors in the fall during a popular farm tour. Dining choices range from Mexican fare at El Sombrero to home-style American food at Lulu’s, and there’s no shortage of espresso stands. Or stock up on baked goodies at the Two Clouds Bakery (located inside the Ravensara coffee shop), assemble a picnic at the new Food Market in Key Center and stop
by Blend Wine Shop for a suggestion of best wine for your open-air meal. Shopaholics will find local souvenirs, items by local artists, vintage treasurers, lavender gifts and more at several Key Peninsula shops. Check the community schedule for seasonal events, which include outdoor movies in August and a variety of festivals and fairs in spring and summer, along with dances, feasts and holiday celebrations. You’ll also find year-round live music, poetry readings and open mics — the Key is full of surprises.

A
must-stop on the Key Peninsula April through October is the Blue Willow Lavender Farm. The farm, located on a 15-acre property, boasts 15 lavender beds on about an acre and a half. Visitors are welcome to stroll through the fields, take photos, even bring a picnic lunch. Lavender blooming season starts around the third week
of June and goes through the end of August or early September, peaking midto end-July. Stop by the lavender store on the farm, pick your own lavender and enjoy the sights and smells of this magic plant. The farm is open Tuesday through Saturday but if you stop by on a Saturday in June, July or August, you will find owners Bill and Tracy Ketts dressed in American Revolution costumes. The couple tell visitors about life on a lavender farm in Colonial times, show how candles were made, give tours and answer questions. For all things lavender — and more — visit the farm for its third annual Lavender Festival, hosted this year on Friday and Saturday, July 12 and 13. Blue Willow will have food and craft vendors, live music and, of course, u-pick lavender and lavender products. And if you visit outside of the blooming season, you can still enjoy this wonderful farm. Take a tour of the grounds, shop at the lavender store and say hello to lavender experts Bill and Tracy.

HISTORY
TIDBIT: Gig Harbor and the surrounding region are dotted with heritage markers as well as environmental markers that tell the story of the region.

TURN BACK D
espite its major growth, Gig Harbor has stayed true to its roots. The community proudly honors its maritime and boat-building heritage, and a visit to downtown will give you a glimpse into one of Northwest’s most-intriguing historic grounds. A busy commercial fishing fleet still calls the Harbor home and during the off-season, you’re likely to spot local fishermen working on their boats or equipment. Many Croatian and Scandinavian families settled in Gig Harbor at the turn of the 20th century, and descendants of those pioneers continue the tradition. Several historic netsheds owned by 50
www.meetingigharbor.com
THE CLOCK fishing families for multiple generations remain working today. One of oldest, the Skansie Netshed, is city owned and is located at the Skansie Brothers Park. It has become a public jewel, thanks to local restoration efforts. Known as the birthplace of the Thunderbird sailboat, Gig Harbor continues to pay tribute to its boatbuilding history. The historic Eddon Boatyard, now called The Gig Harbor Boatshop, is where the Thunderbird was perfected, and is now a maritime educational facility that hosts various
classes and displays. Another great stop for history and boating buffs is the Harbor History Museum, where the first Thunderbird hull and the 65-foot fishing vessel Shenandoah are displayed. You can watch the Shenandoah restoration in action and even join other volunteers on the weekends to help shipwright Nate Slater do some of the work. Other permanents exhibits feature artifacts about Native Americans, ferries, steamboats and the three Tacoma Narrows Bridges, among other things. Additionally, special exhibitions rotate throughout the year. Watch for historic markers sprinkled throughout the waterfront to learn interesting facts about local landmarks. You’ll also find the heritage markers beyond downtown, as far as Fox Island and Key Peninsula, providing information about historic and environmental points of interest. Use your smart phone to take the tour via the community mobile website at www.gigharborguide.com.
TIDBIT: Three bridges have spanned the narrows leading to Gig Harbor. Bridge #1, nicknamed Galloping Gertie, famously lies on the bottom of the narrows. Bridge #3 opened in 2007.

HEALTHY HARBOR
Gig Harbor has an extensive choice of health-care services that range from a state-of-the-art hospital and a variety of specialty providers, to complementary medicine and dental care.
