As Co-founder of GHFF, it’s been a pleasure and wonderful opportunity to show the love, care and beauty of our community. Not only for those of us fortunate to live here but for the tourist and our neighbors of Puget Sound. Gig Harbor is an enclave within a harbor to offer friendly smiles, cultural arts, boating, and all that makes our beautiful community hum with love. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to meet and speak with many filmmakers. They learn quickly the care, appreciation and positive support their films are given. How exciting for them to learn their treasured work will be screened in a high tech, award winning, 10 screen Galaxy Theatre and appreciated by an articulate, intelligent, sophisticated community of film-enthusiasts. Each will have a chance, first hand, to view our beautiful town, enjoy those friendly smiles and warm handshakes. Now, let’s sit back, enjoy the popcorn, the films and learn firsthand from filmmakers all that goes into shooting and making independent films we all love!! The Gig Harbor Film Festival.....we bring the Magic of film to you!!

Director: Jeremy Seifert Today in the United States, by the simple acts of feeding ourselves, we are unwittingly participating in the largest experiment ever conducted on human beings. Each of us unknowingly consumes genetically engineered food on a daily basis. The risks and effects to our health and the environment are largely unknown. Yet more and more studies are being conducted around the world, which only provide even more reason for concern. We are the oblivious guinea pigs for wide-scale experimentation of modern biotechnology. GMO OMG tells the story of a fathers discovery of GMOs in relationship to his 3 young children and the world around him. We still have time to heal the planet, feed the world, and live sustainably. But we have to start now!

HONORING OUR WOUNDED WARRIORS GHFF is honored to welcome two outstanding U S Military award recipients, SFC LEROY PETRY, who received the Medal of Honor as well as multiple major citations, and Retired U.S. ARMY CORPORAL SUE DOWNS who received two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star. They have both been credited for exemplary service during their tours in the Afghanistan Campaign.
Join us October 17 at the Opening Gala Kick O Party as we salute these two wonderful, dedicated citizens and honor the sacrifices of all the men and women in our military. MEDAL OF HONOR RECIPIENT SGT. 1ST CLASS LEROY ARTHUR PETRY is currently assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 75th Ranger Regiment at Fort Benning, Ga. with duties as a liaison officer for the United States Special Operations Command Care Coalition—Northwest Region, providing oversight to wounded warriors, ill and injured service members and their families. He was born in 1979 in New Mexico. In September 1999, Petry enlisted in the United States Army, something he wanted to do since he was 7-years-old. Petry then volunteered for the 75th Ranger Regiment because of its reputable history. After completion of One Station Unit Training, the Basic Airborne Course and the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program – all at Fort Benning – Petry was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. He served as a grenadier, squad automatic rifleman, fire team leader, squad leader, operations sergeant and a weapons squad leader. He has deployed eight times in support of overseas contingency operations with two tours to Iraq and six tours to Afghanistan. At the time of the May 26, 2008 combat engagement, Petry was a Staff Sergeant Squad Leader assigned to Co. D, 2nd Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash. Petry plans to retire from the Army after many more years of service. Petry enjoys serving in the Army, and has a great opportunity to work with the care coalition; in his words, “If I can’t go to the fight, I can help the men who are wounded, injured or ill.” His military education includes the Basic Airborne Course, Combat Life Saver Course, U.S. Army Ranger Course, Warrior Leader Course, Jumpmaster Course, Advanced Leader Course, Senior Leader Course and Combatives Level One Course. Petry and his wife have four children. He is currently attending Pierce College at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., with plans for a Bachelor of Science degree in business management.

PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT CPL (RET.) SUE DOWNES served in Afghanistan and was originally stationed in Germany. In Feb 2005, she was deployed with the 554th Military Police Co. attached to the 10th Mt. Division out of New York. In Afghanistan, she was stationed in Logar Province with only about 50 personnel. She was a gunner and also a driver. After returning back from R&R in November 2005, Downes was asked if she wanted to be a gunner for a mission the next day. About 30 min. into the mission, troops hit 3 landmines that were pressure plated, so when their Humvee tires hit, they exploded throwing Downes’ driver from the truck and instantly killing her squad leader. The driver bled out within 3 mins. Downes eventually regained consciousness. Downes remembers nothing of that day, other than the snow and the mountains. All she knew is what she had been told. She suffered leg amputations both below the knee, a liver laceration, an intestine laceration, left arm nerve damage, and also TBI and PTSD. While at Walter Reed, Downes was encouraged to apply for a service dog through the NEADSs (National Education for Assistance Dog Services) Canines for Combat Veterans program. In August 2007, She was paired with Lila — a yellow Labrador, and they both quickly became known as “blonde on blonde” by other patients. In addition to helping her walk with my prosthetic legs, Lila has become a loving and intuitive companion, particularly with PTSD: “The big thing is, she helps me with a lot of stress issues, which I didn’t expect her to do. If I’m down in the dumps one day, she knows. She’ll come lay at my feet or jump up on the couch. She’s not supposed to, but I let her. She lies beside me and tries to cheer me up.” Downes is the first female combat veteran to receive a service dog. Now retired from the Army, she feels that she has adjusted “pretty well,” with good days and bad. She tires easily and does not go out as much as I used to. “However, on a good day, Lila and I might visit the local veterans association or shop for groceries; Lila also likes to go to PetSmart.” “I am thankful that while out in public, people tend to pay more attention to Lila than to my disabilities. She helps with a lot of things: picking up things when I drop them, bring me things when I point to them, opens doors, makes me smile when I don’t feel like it. I have overcome a lot. Lila makes me feel at ease. In the Army, we have this thing called a “battle buddy.” You never go anywhere by yourself, and you always take your “battle buddy” because they are there to protect you and you are there to protect them. It’s the same concept with a service dog.”

Allison, his five-year-old sister, annoys Benny by constantly tagging along with him everywhere. Benny immediately leaves and goes to the local swimming pool, Allison tags along. But, Allison nearly drowns. Now Benny has to cover up Albert’s irresponsibility or risk facing Albert’s wrath. Henry Oertelt and his new wife, Inge, survived the Holocaust. In the early 1950’s, they immigrated to Minnesota from Berlin with their baby. Henry has managed to get a job, buy a car (even though they were hoodwinked into paying $500 and is now studying for his American citizenship. Inge convinced Henry to go to a party. On the way out the door, he avoided a confrontation with the babysitter who looked inquisitively at his Auschwitz tattoo. Henry, like many Survivors, originally never wanted to talk about his experiences in Germany during the Holocaust. Arnold Fink, one of the party guests, was very nosy and kept pestering him with questions. Henry tried to dodge him but he was very persistent. Finally, Arnold extracted the time and place of Henry’s liberation. They discover that both of them were there at the exact same time!
‘Everything Went Down’ follows a young college professor (played by Noah Drew) who has become a shell of a person following the death two years earlier of his wife. Crippled by a numbing grief, he’s shut himself off from the world emotionally. At the same time, a young singer-songwriter (popular indie rocker Kate Tucker) has begun to lose faith in the struggle to make a name for herself as a musician. Bogged down by the pressures of turning her art into commerce, she has lost sight of why she wanted to make music in the first place. ‘Everything Went Down’ is a realist musical in the style of the beloved Irish film ‘Once.’ Subverting the traditional structure of musicals, in which characters artificially break into song and performance, the music in ‘Everything Went Down’ is integrated concretely into the world of the film, complementing the narrative, and providing the film with the generosity and compassion at its center.

Bill W. tells the story of William G. Wilson, co-founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, a man included in TIME Magazine’s “100 Persons of the 20th Century.” Interviews, recreations, and rare archival material reveal how Bill Wilson, a hopeless drunk near death from his alcoholism, found a way out of his own addiction and then forged a path for countless others to follow. With Bill as its driving force, A.A. grew from a handful of men to a worldwide fellowship of over 2 million men and women – a success that made him an icon within A.A., but also an alcoholic unable to be a member of the very society he had created. A reluctant hero, Bill Wilson lived a life of sacrifice and service, and left a legacy that continues every day, all around the world.
Joseph “Blake” Carrington runs an organic mini-farm on the outskirts of a large, southern town. His rustic lifestyle means he is a bit removed from his family: his wife spent the last decade pursuing a career in pediatrics; his teenage daughter, Tracy, wants independence; his 10-year-old son has been raised on television, video games and abundance. It’s a typical day of drama and duties when a solar storm cuts power to the farm. Soon after they discover electricity and communications in town are at total blackout as well: Cell phones do not connect, battery powered radios get only static, nothing is transmitting from television networks. There is no way of knowing what is happening, except by word of mouth. All things in the outside world descend into chaos without electricity and communications. Resources diminish. For most a struggle of life and death ensues.

Producer/Director: Lucy Ostrander and Don Sellers “Honor and Sacrifice” is the story of one man’s journey from early hardship to a concentration camp and ultimately to the stature of authentic American hero, based on his nearly unbelievable contribution as a member of Merrill’s Marauders. Roy was a man of extraordinary strength, stamina, wit, and courage, as this story demonstrates. But in most respects he was also a typical member of the Japanese American community he grew up in, showing through his life and military service the qualities of determination, loyalty, and acceptance of sacrifice that define the honorable place in US history occupied by the Japanese Americans of the 20th century. www.gigharborfilmfestival.org • 2013 GIG HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL • 17 www.gigharborfilmfestival.org • 2013 GIG HARBOR FILM FESTIVAL • 17

When the spiritual teacher and his disciples began their evening meditation, the cat who lived in the monastery made such a fuss that it became to distracting. So the teacher ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening practice. Years later, when the teacher died, the cat continued to be tied up during the meditation session. And when the cat eventually died, another cat was adopted by the monastery and tied up. Centuries later, learned descendants of the spiritual teacher wrote scholarly treatises about the religious significance of tying up a cat for meditation practice. So do we live crystallized by the past, lost to the present, and denied our future?
