WELCOME TO

Goreous

Gig Harbor

Easy to get to, tough to leave. Gig Harbor is Washington’s Maritime City. Steeped in maritime history with boat building and commercial fishing playing a major role in the development of the area, Gig Harbor has now become an historic yet contemporary destination along the south shores of the Puget Sound. Our inventory of historic net sheds is the largest of all that remain on Puget Sound, but Gig Harbor is more than that – this waterfront town is a community rich in scenery and wonderful restaurants, upscale shopping and galleries galore.

4

www.gigharborguide.com

Add in unparalleled recreation – our view of Mount Rainier adorns travel books worldwide. We encourage you to grab a kayak or a latte, sip some wine or savor ice cream, put your feet up or slip on your running shoes. Whatever you fancy, we have it in Gig Harbor. Named one of Smithsonian Magazines Top Five Small Towns for culture, heritage and charm and home to wonderfully appointed inns and hotels with many options in between, Gig Harbor has you covered. We encourage you to take your time and explore the entire peninsula area.

ON THE COVER Gig Harbor photographer John Pleau has provided the beautiful photo we chose to use as the cover for this year’s Official Gig Harbor Visitor Guide. The image illustrates a typical warm Friday afternoon in the Harbor, bustling with boating activity and serene beachcombing combined. Although it may give the appearance of a midsummer day’s outing, the photograph was taken on a sunny late-winter day, from a vantage point on the new Donkey Creek Bridge.

GET AROUND

trolley ON THE

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend, ditch the driving and the worries about parking, and travel around Gig Harbor in style. A vintage-style trolley runs between downtown and the Uptown shopping center — a fun trip both for locals and visitors. Two old-style trolley on wheels have been outfitted for the occasion (as well as two backup buses painted to look like the trolleys). To complete the nostalgic look, the trolley’s “conductors” wear special uniforms and announce the stops the old-fashioned way — via the PA system — instead of using a recorded computer message. The trolley runs every 30 minutes and has extended hours until 10 p.m. on Tuesdays (when the popular Summer Sounds at Skansie Concert series fill downtown) and on Fridays. Rides cost 50 cents and are free to holders of the Regional Reduced Fare Permit. Pets and bicyclists are welcome, too. Pierce Transit operates the Gig Harbor trolley with the help of several community partners. The city of Gig Harbor, the Gig Harbor Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Waterfront Alliance and Uptown Gig Harbor support the project financially in order to keep the ride fares down.

shopping

If you need a little retail therapy, Gig Harbor can satisfy just about any desire. A blend of national stores and locally owned, quaint shops cater to all lifestyles and budgets, whether you’re looking for department stores or specialty retailers.

PLACES TO

shop

Downtown, as the city’s oldest commercial area, continues to be a major attraction. You’ll find several art galleries like Water’s Edge and Full Moon, apparel boutiques like Beach Basket and Queen’s Cabinet, plus gift shops and specialty stores catering to various hobbies. Stop by the Gig Harbor Fly Shop for fishing supplies, Wild Birds Unlimited for all things birdwatching, Green Cottage Pets for a toy or wholesome treat for your well-behaved pooch, and Mostly Books for some great reads. And make sure you take home a souvenir or two — antique finds at The Weathered Cottage, beautiful and unique jewelry at Kit Kuhn, gifts from around the world at Imagine Great Things, and nautical-themed décor and art at Sea Hags are among 22

the many treasures you’ll find. Every second Thursday of the month downtown turns into a little party town starting at 5 p.m. Merchants stay open late, until 8 p.m., and offer various specials, activities and even live music and entertainment. In late spring through fall, the Gig Harbor Farmers Market comes downtown to the Skansie Brothers Park on Wednesdays and Sundays. Shop for fresh produce, baked goods, handmade crafts and more, and enjoy live music, kids activities and advice from expert Master Gardeners. (Also check out the indoor market on Saturdays, April through December, on Wollochet Drive.) The West Side is another destination for what could be

an all-day shopping adventure. Uptown Gig Harbor and its neighbor, Point Fosdick Square, are home to a few dozen national and local shops catering to the upscale and budgetconscious crowds, and those in between. Find out what’s hip at Bloom, LOFT or one of the many other retail shops; peruse kitchen or home décor at Bella Kitchen & Home and the Garden Room; or find just the right toy at the locally owned Teaching Toys and Books. And when you get tired of all the shopping, get a massage or manicure at one of the spas or salons; enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants; catch a film screening at the state-of-the-art Galaxy Theatre; or indulge your sweet tooth at Ben & Jerry’s, Menchie’s or the locals favorite

hangout, Cutters Point Coffee. Check out the Uptown’s schedule too for year-round events, from summer concerts to car shows. When it comes to shopping, don’t just settle for downtown or uptown. You’ll find hidden gems in other area of Gig Harbor, including gardening supplies and décor at Wilco and Rosedale Gardens, just the right card or gift at Morford’s Hallmark, fine European gifts and clothing (and a lovely garden setting) at the Chalet in the Woods, and more gifts for all occasions at shops in Purdy and on the Key Peninsula. You’ll also find a variety of big retailers ranging from Pier 1 to Big 5 in Gig Harbor North — so you can have all your bases covered, no matter your mood and desire. www.gigharborguide.com

THE GIG HARBOR

waterfront Photo by Chris Yetter

Once you visit Gig Harbor’s downtown, you’ll understand why the city has been called a maritime village. But the nickname of a sleepy fishing town is more of a tribute than an actual description. Sure, there are hints throughout the waterfront about Gig Harbor’s quiet days, and downtown does pay tribute to the town’s heritage. But there’s nothing sleepy about it — downtown Gig Harbor is a vibrant destination where commercial and recreational activities, history and community events all happily collide. Quaint shops sprinkled along the waterfront and beyond offer hours of browsing for gifts, home décor, jewelry, apparel and antiques — the list goes on. No matter what time of the year you visit, you’ll find something to do. Summer brings outdoor movies and concerts, as well as several festivals and a farmers

Then, there’s year-round fun, from family-friendly art walks and pottery painting, to beer and wine tastings for some adult time. Downtown and uptown alone are exercises in indecision. With so many excellent choices, how could you settle on one? And once you venture beyond those hubs, more temptations await. Indian, Mexican, Asian, American, Italian — whatever flavor you’re in the mood for, Gig Harbor has it. If you want dining with a little view, the place to be is downtown — home to such mainstays as the Tides Tavern and Puerto Vallarta. With its generous deck size, Tides Tavern is especially busy in the summer, but it’s a popular locals’ hangout all year-round. The name is practically synonymous with the Harbor — and don’t let the word “tavern” fool you. Beyond

implies, this is a place where experimentation is required. Menu items such as Dork Balls, Hothead, Burger of the Gods and Le Truffle Love are begging to be ordered, and that’s before you even reach the “boozie shakes” list. (Hint: That caramel macchiato is not what you would get from your favorite barista). Venture slightly off the beaten path around Gig Harbor for other excellent restaurants, such as Gateway to India (don’t miss the famous mango pudding), The Heritage Restaurant (consistently a local favorite) at the Inn at Gig Harbor, Il Lucano (featuring candlelight atmosphere and an extensive Italian menu) and Mizu, a Japanese steakhouse with rave reviews. And if you just need to indulge your sweet tooth, get your daily doze of caffeine bliss or just chill with a glass of beer or wine, Gig Harbor has you covered. Enjoy a trendy (and sinful) treat from Sweet Melissa’s (where cupcakes rule) or fro-yo with creative toppings at Yo! G’s and Menchie’s. Or stop and smell the coffee — and grab a comfy chair — at Cutters Point Coffee, Kimball Café or Java & Clay. When you’re ready to relax at the end of the day, you’ll find plenty of places where conversation—or live music—is as plentiful as the beer, wine and spirits. Go ahead, you deserve a break. After all, this is Gig Harbor—where every day feels like a getaway.

Forget the ritzy theaters and overcrowded nightclubs. Gig Harbor’s nightlife is not what you’ll find in a typical big city. But worry not. Whether it’s place to celebrate a special occasion, to unwind after a busy day or to hang out with friends — whatever’s on your mind, you’ll find just the right “hole in the wall” or bar for any night out. Live music is on the menu regularly at several popular hangouts, including The Hub at the Airport, Floatation Device Pub and Grill, Halftime Sports Saloon and Forza (a coffee shop by day, wine bar by night). Oenophiles in the mood for wine tastings should head out to Blend Wine Shop (which also features monthly poetry readings), The Keeping Room, Morso Wine Bar or The Wine Studio (which also has open mic and ladies’ nights). If wine is not your thing, check out 7 Seas Brewing or Heritage Distilling Co. Located downtown, 7 Seas is a craft microbrewery where you can taste the unique beer selections in the taproom and beer garden before you take home a growl or two. You’ll also get a peek at the inner workings of the brewing facility. Not to be outdone, Heritage Distilling gives discriminating whiskey connoisseurs a rare chance to tour the distilling operation and taste the results — and even come in for a hands-on session of making their own spirits. Cheers!

Attractions for the whole family Gig Harbor’s charm comes not from major “tourist magnets” but from its small-town atmosphere and familyfriendly attractions. It’s a place where rural and urban settings collide, a place where you can enjoy both a bustling city environment and a quiet farm life. SIGHTS, SMELLS AND SOUNDS Visitors only have to go as far as downtown to enjoy some of the most awe-inspiring views in Puget Sound. For the best panoramic overview of the harbor and Mount Rainier, head to the Finholm View Climb. After an easy stair climb from North Harborview — or drive to the street above for ground-level access —

the kids to watch the landings and takeoffs of aircraft that include historic planes and military Black Hawks. The recent rehabilitation of the runway and the opening of the popular Hub at Gig Harbor, along with other improvements, are making the airport an increasingly popular destination. The Hub’s outdoor dining area gives visitors a front-row view of the runway. If you’re ready for an experience to excite all your senses, don’t miss Blue Willow Lavender Farm on the Key Peninsula. The farm boasts 15 lavender beds on an acre and a half,

you’ll be rewarded by a sweeping view of the water and the sailboats, with a backdrop of a postcard-perfect Mount Rainer (on a sunny day). Or, if you want to get a little closer to the water and maybe even catch a glimpse of wildlife, enjoy the scenery from the Bogue Viewing Platform, on the water side of North Harborview. The Tacoma Narrows Airport, on the west side of Gig Harbor, offers another distinctinve view. Bring

legged “kids” to let loose, take them to the Rotary Bark Park. The 97-acre property includes trails as well as a 15-acre off-leash dog park. Gig Harbor is known for its hospitality to dogs of all breeds and sizes. Dogs are welcome to take their owners for a walk at any local park, as long as they stay on a leash and make sure their humans pick up. The Wesley Inn, The Inn at Gig Harbor and many of the bed and breakfasts are pet-friendly, and many merchants around town stock treats and offer water bowls for wellbehaved pooches.

FUN FOR ALL CREATURES Visiting the area with youngsters? Take them to the City Park at Crescent Creek, a short drive from downtown, to run off some energy. The newest attraction at the park is the Gig Harbor Maritime PlayZone, a boundless playground for kids of all abilities. The star of the playground is the Harbor Gem, an old-style fishing boat that pays tribute to the area’s maritime history and inspires the kids’ imagination. If you need a place for your four-

OUT ON THE WATER

Experience Gig Harbor’s rich culture and history

Whether you arrive to the area by car or by boat, Lakebay Marina Resort on the Key Peninsula is a fun place to enjoy the water. Long before cars became the transportation of choice, the pier was a popular destination for steamboats of the Mosquito Fleet, delivering schoolchildren, visitors, mail and supplies. Today, Lakebay Marina is one of the few remaining Mosquito Fleet docks in Puget Sound. The new owners of Lakebay Marina honor that history through the vintage atmosphere of the café, where you’ll find delicious burgers, oyster, fish and chips and other fare. Live music as well as beer and wine tastings are offered on the weekends, along with other events. Campers are welcome to set up on the land, and a newly renovated two-bedroom cabin

The Gig Harbor Peninsula has seen major growth through the years, yet the local communities have stayed true to their roots. Historical points of interest and various cultural events and attractions add to the charm of this area. During the off-season, signs of

The farm is a popular destination for seafood lovers, who can purchase fresh oysters and clams as well as smoked oysters and smoked salmon. attractions commercial fishing activities can be seen around the Gig Harbor waterfront as local fishermen tend to their gear. And all year-round, historic net sheds that dot the shoreline give a glimpse into yesteryear’s bustling fishing industry. Thanks to the city’s historic preservation efforts, the public can take a more intimate look inside one of the area’s oldest net sheds. The house and the property of the Skansie family, who were among Gig Harbor’s settlers, has been restored and are now home to nonprofit organizations and public activities. The Coastal Heritage Alliance, headquartered at the Skansie Net Shed, offers tours on the historic purse seiner Commencement, along with other activities. The Skansie family home will host a satellite visitor center and the new headquarters of Harbor WildWatch starting with summer 2014. Gig Harbor is the birthplace of the Thunderbird sailboat, and you can relive the boat-building past at the Eddon Boatyard, where the Thunderbird was once perfected. The boatyard is home to the Gig Harbor BoatShop, a nonprofit that offers hands-on educational activities for all ages. Visitors to the interpretive center can tour the boatyard, take boatbuilding and other classes, sail on the Pirouette (Thunderbird No. 2) and even work alongside a professional boatwright on a restoration project. For more hands-on boatbuilding activities, head over to the Harbor History Museum. The first Thunderbird hull and the Shenandoah, a 65-foot fishing vessel, are on display at the museum. You can watch the vessel’s restoration-inprogress or volunteer to work on the restoration with the shipwright. Other permanent exhibits at the museum tell the stories of Native Americans, ferries, the three Tacoma

Narrows Bridges and other local history. Special displays in 2014 include the 15th Annual Juried Maritime Exhibition July 27 through Sept. 14 and the Peninsula Art League Exhibition Sept. 27 through Nov. 15. Take a scenic drive to the Key Peninsula, just a few minutes away, for another kind of historic experience. Once a place for busy sawmills and lively Mosquito Fleet stops, the Key Peninsula has maintained its rural, slow-paced feel. The Key Peninsula Historic Museum’s 2014 exhibition, called “Forest to Farms,” harkens back to the times when Native Americans populated the area and the first settlers were beaconed by opportunities for logging and farming. (The museum is closed during the winter.) As you drive around the two peninsulas, watch for historic markers sprinkled throughout the Gig Harbor waterfront and areas around Key Peninsula and Fox Island. The markers provide information about historic landmarks and environmental points of interest. Go to gigharborguide.com to get the virtual tour and plan your trip.

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES A visit to Gig Harbor would not be complete without experiencing its rich cultural activities. Community theater, a civic orchestra, art walks,

poetry readings and artist studio tours are among the many ways to nourish your soul. While you’re strolling around the area, you’ll also find many works of art in public spaces — some of those works in the most unexpected places. These are some of the works you’ll find: A bronze statue by Russian sculptor Antonov Safronov of a fisherman pulling a net, at the city’s Jerisich Park downtown; A giant wood statue depicting wildlife including an eagle, chainsawcarved from the trunks of old twin cedars by local artist Jeff Samudosky; A metal bell sculpture featuring a salmon, by renowned local artist Tom Torrens, at the Donkey Creek Park downtown (see more of Tom’s metal pieces around Uptown Gig Harbor shopping center); A bronze statue of two kids titled “Balancing the Books” by local artist and retired principal John Jewell outside of the Key Center branch of Pierce County Library; A beautiful Northwest-themed water feature at Uptown Gig Harbor that includes a sculpture by internationally renowned late sculptor William Reece; A whimsical, stainless-steel sculpture titled “Rollerblader” by Southworth artist Douglas Granum; A mural depicting local and state history, created by students, in front of Minter Creek Elementary School and a newly unveiled mural, created by students, at Key Peninsula Middle School.

Surrounded by views of the water, Mount Rainier and the Olympics, it’s a place you can reach within an easy drive, yet feel like you’ve escaped miles away.

BUZZ IS GROWING ABOUT THE 2015 U.S. OPEN AT CHAMBERS BAY GOLF COURSE More than 200,000 people are expected to descend on the Puget Sound area for the U.S. Open Championship in June 2015. The USGA flagship even will be hosted at Pierce County’s Chambers Bay Golf Course, located in University Place just across the Tacoma Narrows Bridge from Gig Harbor. This is the first time for the U.S. Open — the second of four major USGA annual events — is coming to the Pacific Northwest since its launch in 1895. The U.S. Open has already generated a lot of local buzz, and Gig Harbor hotels and merchants are bracing for the increased activity beginning in March of 2015. Overnight accommodations are especially expected to be in high demand. Gig Harbor is the perfect place to stay during the weeklong championship — the local hotels are the closest to the site, and the commute is a breeze. The area offers a relaxing getaway when you’re not at Chambers Bay watching the champions — beautiful views, plentiful shopping and cultural activities, a variety of dining options and other attractions. And you can get some golfing action yourself while out and about, thanks to Gig Harbor’s abundance of golf courses. In 2009, Leslie Mayne received the call every parent fears. Her son, Army Private First Class Kyle Marshall Farr was a threeyear military veteran. Having served during some of the most violent days in Iraq, Kyle returned home and entered Walter Reed Army Hospital, then was transferred to Perry Point VA Hospital (in Maryland) for treatment of severe nightmares, depression and headaches resulting from his injuries. On March 6, the VA Hospital treating him released him with approval to self-medicate. The next day, March 7, 2009, Kyle was dead. To work through her grief, along with prayer and counseling, Leslie began running. As she ran, she began to heal. As she began to heal, she began to dream. As she began to dream, she began to share her dream with others. The DREAM of helping to raise awareness of the intense struggle so many of our warriors, men and women, are coming

home with and the DREAM of raising funds to support alternative therapy programs that are changing and, in many cases, saving lives. The longest journey many soldiers face is not the plane ride home from distant battlefields, but rather the journey they face upon returning. By the fall of 2010, the DREAM began to take shape and on Oct. 16, 2011, powered by faith, love and more than 300 volunteers, Race For A Soldier Half Marathon welcomed nearly 1,400 runners and thousands of spectators to celebrate a day when PTSD would take on a new meaning, Permission To Start Dreaming. Permission for Soldiers to start dreaming of a life filled with hope, possibilities and the strength to know they do not stand alone, but have the support of their community against this sometimes invisible enemy. Since 2011, RFAS has contributed nearly

$100,000 to therapy programs such as Rainier Therapeutic, Heartbeat Serving Wounded Warriors, Veteran’s Expedition, 1st Tee and the USO providing services to military personnel and their families. On the weekend of Sept. 28, 2014, RACE For A Soldier will once again bring that DREAM to life. This highly anticipated community wide event begins with a prayer breakfast on Friday morning followed by SWING For A Soldier golf tournament held at Eagle’s Pride in Lakewood. At 8 a.m. Sunday RACE For A Soldier Half Marathon and 2 Mile fun run complete the weekend. For more information, go to www.RaceForASoldier.org. Run, volunteer, cheer, donate. Join the mission in turning the Dream into Hope!

Two major nonprofits, Franciscan Health System and MultiCare Health System, serve the area with a comprehensive array of services including urgent care. Additionally, independent practices range from primary care and pediatrics to chiropractic and naturopathic medicine. St. Anthony Hospital, owned by Franciscan is a green, award-winning facility with an innovative emergency department that ranks in the top in the country for patient satisfaction. St. Anthony Medical Park, located in west Gig Harbor, is home to Olympic Pharmacy. MultiCare Gig Harbor Medical Park, also on west side, includes a popular medical and day spa, a Mary Bridge Child Express clinic and a YMCA women’s fitness center and an on-site YMCA drop-in nursery, among many other services. Massage therapy, homeopathy and herbal medicine are among the holistic services available in Gig Harbor. And whether you’re visiting for a short time or a longer stay, you have no excuse for not staying fit. Not only is Gig Harbor a mecca for outdoor fitness, it also has many fitness clubs offering everything from classes and personal training to swimming pools. Those who love fresh air and scenery will find running and biking trails, tennis courts, skateboard parks and BMX facilities. Two very active park districts, one on the Gig Harbor peninsula and another on the Key Peninsula, offer year-round classes and recreational opportunities for kids and adults alike.
