Many thanks and deep appreciation to the members of the GHFF Board of Directors and Advisory Board who work hard to bring thousands of details together to ensure this continued growth. As Co-founder of GHFF, it’s been a pleasure and wonderful opportunity to show the love, care and beauty of our community. Not only for those of us fortunate to live here but for the tourist and our neighbors of Puget Sound. Gig Harbor is an enclave within a harbor to offer friendly smiles, cultural arts, boating, and all that makes our beautiful community hum with love. I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to meet and speak with many filmmakers. They learn quickly the care, appreciation and positive support their films are given. How exciting for them to learn their treasured work will be screened in a high tech, award winning, 10 screen Galaxy Theatre and appreciated by an articulate, intelligent, sophisticated community of film-enthusiasts. Each will have a chance, first hand, to view our beautiful town, enjoy those friendly smiles and warm handshakes. Now, let’s sit back, enjoy the popcorn, the films and learn firsthand from filmmakers all that goes into shooting and making independent films we all love!! The Gig Harbor Film Festival.....we bring the Magic of film to you!!

October in Gig Harbor brings us another season to enjoy with the beauty of fall colors all around us. It also brings one of my favorite annual events, the Gig Harbor Film Festival. Now in its fifth season, the festival brings a variety of great films and interesting subjects from aspiring filmmakers to our community. We share the beauty of our community with them for inspiration; they share their picture of the world through film with us. If you haven’t attended one of the many entertaining events offered during the weekend of the Film Festival, make this the year to get out and support “REEL Magic”. Meet and greet these talented visitors and give them a warm welcome to the Maritime City.

This 1987 drama is set in a small Scandinavian town in northern Minnesota. The death of an eccentric old woman stirs this small town’s curiosity of a possible hidden fortune. But as Mary Graving, played by Pamela Reed as a small town reporter, digs deeper for the truth, she uncovers a better understanding of her own place in the community and of the powerful bonds connecting her to those around her. The Hollywood Reporter described it as “a sparkling glimpse into the resilience of the human spirit”. The screenplay was written by Judith Guest (“Ordinary People”) and features outstanding performances by Tacoma native Reed (“Kindergarten Cop”, “The Right Stuff”, and currently in “Parks and Recreation”) Vivica Lindfors, Zelkjo Ivanek (“24”) and Craig T. Nelson (“Parenthood”).

The “Afflictions” films shine a light on societal issues impacting the experiences—the suffering and the wellbeing--of the mentally ill, some specific to the Indonesian culture and others with global application. Balinese religious symbology, Dutch colonial occupation and Indonesian historical events play a role in the their stories. At the same time, universal concepts rise to the surface: home placement can be more beneficial than institutional care; urban living impacts disease onset and outcomes; and treatment modalities that integrate psychiatric and outpatient treatment can be the most effective. In the end, it is my hope that the findings clarified and made accessible in “Afflictions” help shape the care and treatment of the mentally ill in Indonesia, in other developing nations and around the world.

In WOLF CALL, Mike Wiley is William Bradford Huie of Look magazine... In September of 1955, in Money, Mississippi a jury found Roy Bryant Jr. and J.W. Milam both not guilty of murdering 14-year old Emmett Till from Chicago. Before the trial they had admitted to kidnapping Emmett, but held no blame in his disappearance and consequent murder. They weren’t even indicted for the abduction: off scot-free, clean as a whistle. Not a word had been uttered outside a courtroom by them or their kin, until now. Without this missing piece of the puzzle, hypocrisy and myth had flourished. It is now January 24, 1956, nearly six months after the kidnapping, murder and subsequent trial. William Bradford Huie sits down with the accused killers, J.W. and Roy, two men who have been hoisted on the shoulders of white supremacy. Huie questions the men, not as a journalistic source and not as interrogator to witness, but as a southern white man to southern white men. He knows they did it, that answer is brutally obvious. What this reporter wants to understand, what Look magazine is paying $4000 dollars to print and what several million Americans just like you will pay to read and gossip over is, why? As Roy and J.W. open up to Huie, hypocrisy is exposed, myth dispelled...

(PG-13)
Narrated by award-winning actor GARY SINISE, come along for the ride with the “HORSE SOLDIERS OF 9/11”. It was the news the world breathlessly waited for immediately after the 9/11 terror attacks: a report of the first American troops on the ground in Afghanistan. All at once, the world’s attention focused on an iconic photo of small teams of U.S. Special Operations Forces doing something no American military had done in nearly a century: ride horses into combat. That photo would go on to inspire an artist to sculpt an 18ft tall monument at Ground Zero, ten years later. The courage of the first into battle is what guarantees the courage of those that follow: “HORSE SOLDIERS OF 9/11”... a film by war reporter Alex Quade. About the filmmaker: War Reporter Alex Quade covers U.S. Special Operations Forces on combat missions downrange. She is the recipient of the national RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Award and the Congressional Medal Of Honor Society’s “Tex McCrary Award For Excellence In Journalism” for her war reportage. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society recognized Ms.Quade, “for her courageous reporting and honest news coverage”. Alex Quade has been embedded with every branch of the U.S. military, and serves on the Board of Military Reporters and Editors, the Association of Military Journalists.
PANEL DISCUSSION TO FOLLOW: Alex Quade: Moderator. Mary Forbes, Asst Director Veterans Administration, Col. Jason Wing, Commander of Transition Battalion for Wounded Warriors. Also, meet and hear from honored Military Warrior. Please attend this important panel discussion. Show appreciation for our military warriors.

FAMILY • SHORT NARRATIVE
Kyle is a drunk. In a permanent state of disrepair, he sits in front of his trailer all day, drinking beer, and attempting to ignore his family. His wife and two kids have long since given up on him—only his teenage son continues to acknowledge his existence, but even that seems to come under threat when the family discovers a crude coffin buried in the backyard. While Kyle is out on one of his binges, his family unearths, to their great surprise, a second version of Kyle! This ‘new Kyle’ reveals himself to be sober, dependable, and caring—in short, superior in every way—and he quickly wins over the family’s affections. The strange gets stranger when ‘original Kyle’ arrives home from his binge and comes face-to-face with his superior doppelganger. In the end, ‘A Man, Buried’, is a short film about beer, the mysteries of the trailer park, and the human condition of being too lazy to give a damn.

COMPETITION
As any self-respecting film festival, Gig Harbor hosted its fifth annual 72 Film Competition, bringing in filmmakers from around the area, amateur and professional alike. Our aim: to bring light to the lesser-known filmmakers in the area and give them a chance to prove their creative ability in a relatively short amount of time. What is the 72 Hour Film Competition? Developed to challenge the creativity and technological skills of the filmmaker, competitors have 72 hours to create a movie of up to five minutes. All script writing, shooting, light design, sound recording and editing must take place during the allotted time. As if that isn’t challenging enough, each film must include several common elements, such as a prop, a line of dialogue and an action, which must be used within the script. Come and support our young and seasoned filmmakers....the first place winners within two age groups, Youth and Adult, will receive $250 cash. Come and support the youth and adult talented Gig Harbor Filmmakers....be part of the awards ceremony Sunday evening....October 21, 2012.
