Types of Penguins There are many different types of penguins. Not all types of penguins live in super cold climates. The number of exact penguin species is not known. You can tell penguins apart by the markings on their heads. Penguins spend most of their lives in the water where they catch and eat fish, squid and krill.
King Penguin The King Penguin is the second largest species of penguin at about 11 to 16 kg (24-35 lbs) second only to the Emperor penguin. King Penguins breed on the subantarctic islands at the northern reaches of the region. King penguins eat small fish, mainly lantern fish and squid. They rely less than most Southern Ocean predators on krill and other crustaceans.
Adelic Penguin Like all penguins, the Adelic is highly social, foraging and nesting in groups. They are also very aggressive to other penguins that steal stones from their nest. The Adelic penguin is known to feed mainly on Antarctic krill, ice krill, Antarctic silverfish, sea krill and glacial squid. Adelic penguins arrive at their breeding grounds in October or November, at the end of winter and the start of spring. The parents take turns feeding and warming the eggs.
Emperor Penguin The Emperor Penguin is the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species and in endemic to Antarctica. The male and female are similar in plumage and size, reaching anywhere from 22-45 kg (49-99 lbs). The dorsal side and head are black and their belly is white. With a yellow breast and bright yellow ear patches. Like all penguins it is flightless with a streamlined body, and wings stiff and flattened into flippers for a marine.
