Doron Dickman, CEO, Holmes Place Europe

Dear members and friends,

W

elcome to the latest edition of One Life, our own Holmes Place magazine, designed for our members to keep them updated on the progress of the group. I would like to introduce myself to you as the European CEO of Holmes Place. First of all, may I wish you and your families a very Happy New Year full of success and good health. As these uncertain economic times swirl around us, it has been gratifying to hear from so many of you about the importance that Holmes Place plays in our members’ lives as the “steady rock” of inspiration and a source of well-being. We are committed not only to remaining strong and providing you with the best possible levels of service, but to improving our offerings to you as a way of enhancing your lifestyle. As the new year dawns upon us, it is the traditional time to make resolutions. This year, I resolved to make a habit, rather than making a resolution. We have noticed that our members enjoy much greater success when creating habits rather than resolutions. Perhaps I might encourage you to start the new year in the same way – by creating a habit that will improve your life. We have been busy over the holiday period, seeking new ways to add value to your membership and our members’ lives. One of our key objectives for last year was to act on our members’ feedback requesting improvements in the products we provide in our changing rooms. I am delighted to announce that, effective in April of this year, we have secured a relationship with Apivita, a natural cosmetic brand, to supply us with premium bath and shower products for you.

I am also proud to announce the opening of our newest club, in Potsdamer Platz, Berlin. This health club and spa has been three years in the making and has been meticulously designed to reflect the best aspects of our “live well” philosophy. This “next generation” club is the most avantgarde, stylish and exciting Holmes Place we know of, designed by the world’s finest architects and design team. All of our members are invited to enjoy HP Potsdamer Platz and experience the future of Holmes Place. In the spirit of improvement, we also have been hard at work during the last quarter on investing in and upgrading our existing portfolio. Our clubs in Kaiserwasser (Vienna), Millennium (Vienna), Berlin Gendarmenmarkt and Neue Welt have enjoyed recent changing room upgrades, while the clubs in Zurich and Lausanne are currently in the process of creating a more stylish and sophisticated look and feel that will reflect our members’ wishes. Next will be our clubs in Geneva, Seepark (Zurich), Börseplatz (Vienna) and Bahrenfeld (Hamburg), which will all experience the benefits of our extensive refurbishment program. Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience this may cause. We will be investing more than 5M€ this year in our properties in Europe to ensure that we remain the number-one provider of live-well services and continue to serve our members at the level you expect and deserve. It remains for me to wish you much enjoyment of this issue of One Life and a fantastic start to 2012.

Live well.

move Well Brushing teeth while standing on one leg, instability training and pulse control: 10 effective and practical fitness tips for an ideal winter sports preparation by Holmes Place expert Christine Fröbel

1

To avoid sore muscles, pain and the threat of demotivation on the slopes, sports physicians recommend conditioning one‘s body three months before a skiing holiday. Your body will be exposed to unaccustomed challenges when skiing or snowboarding, so an individual training specifically for winter sports is of great importance.

2

Do not train only the muscles needed for skiing or snowboarding. It is much better to get the whole body in shape. During your workout, also try to simulate the slippery and shaky conditions on the slopes. The way to go about that is to include spespe cific winter sports training devices

such as shaky boards, a bosus, a therapeutic spin top and such to balance power and coordination, for only the right combination of power, coordination and ba lance will best prepare you for the mountains.

3

The easiest training tip for achieving better coordination is this: Every time you brush your teeth, try to do it while standing on one leg. Once you master that, try it with your eyes closed.

4

a solid self-evaluation can help protect you from injuries. Particularly at the beginning of a new season, it is crucial to know one’s limits. Many acciacci dents are caused by exhaustion

and fatigue. Once you start feeling tired, be sure to take a break.

5

Usually, it does not help to pump up only superficial muscles, but it is important to stabilize the body. Muscles, tendons and joints need to get fit as well, both for sports and everyday usage. For that purpose, try ”Functional Training,“ which includes movements that will match everyday or sports-specific needs in terms of mechanics, coordination and energy allocation.

6

another good way of train ing for power, coordination, balance, stability and endurance with very high intensity is called TRX® Suspen-

sions Training. This idea is both simple and brilliant: All workouts that further strengthening are done supported by your own body weight, against the gravitational pull, based on the principle of instability. Flexible bands help in simulating fluid motion sequences. Because of this aspect, muscles not only strengthened but also better coordinated.

your heart will pump a greater amount of blood through your body. External shifts in temperature will contribute to your blood vessels widening and tightening, which makes it a perfect training activity. its effects will be tangible: the immune system gets going and your body’s defenses will be ready for the next skiing excursion.

organism and the immune system, with the bonus side effect of improving the body’s defenses.

After an exercise or workout, skiing or snowboarding, head off straight to the sauna. Your body temperature will rise by 1 or 2 degrees Celsius, similar to having a light fever. Skin will heat up by 3 to even 10 degrees Celsius, causing blood vessels to widen. Without much of an effort,

Even when you are not out on a slope, just keep in mind this simple formula: moving will help alleviate stress. Sports such as cycling, nordic walking or running can be done in cold conditions as well as warm ones. Frosty temperatures even have the adad ditional value of stimulating the

It does take some physical effort to improve one’s health. However, if workout intensity is too high, you actually risk damaging your health in the long run. For these reasons alone, it is best to keep an eye on your pulse when training. No matter what you do to keep fit, always strive for realistically achievable goals while maintaining a healthy level of challenge. Also, adapt to your individual condition, which can vary day by day: Sometimes less really is more!

hen breathing in, cold air rushes through your teeth. There is no other weather that is as activity-friendly as the cold, since standing still means freezing, which only adds to the adrenalin rush when the wild ride downhill begins. A long time ago, the first skiers must have felt like that: intoxicated by speed and infinitely free. Subtle shifts of weight can make a world of difference. The ride on a snowboard is like a dance, too – a dance with the hill, the ice and your own body. It is crucial to stay on guard and flexible, never to succumb to the eternal white of the snow. Keeping the hands free in particu-

lar can give you a sense of freedom, since, unlike skiing, there is nothing to hold onto in snowboarding. Only the balance, nature and gliding. Letting go yet still staying in control. Of course, it does take power to snowboard, but power in itself is not enough – for timing and ele-

gance are also required. The depth may seem like a magnet ever pulling you down faster, in spite of the serpentine course. Unlike almost any other sport, snowboarding will let you experience a sense of zero gravity when everything is in harmony: body, board, snow, mountain and spirit.

In comparison to skiing, which has been around for thousands of years, snowboarding may seem modern. The first “monoglider” was invented by Austrian Tom Lenhardt in 1900, leading to the first competitions in 1914. In the US, snowboards was perfected by surfers like Tom Sims who were looking to stay fit in winter, and later by companies like Nitro. The original snowboard, in 1963, were called “Snurfer” (a combination of “snow“ and “surfer“). In the 1970s, they became available for sale and, in 1998, snowboarding turned Olympic. Nowadays, there are millions of snowboarders and hardly any skiing area without its own snowboard park.

here are four basic types of boards that often are used as hybrids. Rule of thumb: The shorter a board is, the better it will turn.

Race Board A rather stiff board for speed racing. It tends to be longer and is best suited for straight jumps, since it is rather heavy. Recently, however, race board models have started becoming more flexible and lighter.

Carving Board Boards that were built especially for dynamic carving.

Freeride Board A freeride board is softer and wider than its colleagues. It is primarily meant for deep snow surfaces, smaller tricks and some carving.

Freestyle Board Short, soft and dynamic, which all matters when jumping. Newer models are a little harder to withstand farther jumps.

Allround Board Looks similar to a freestyle board yet is much more versatile.

Jib Board has been around for about five years, used for riding on rails and other obstacles.

Snowkite Board Broader and better suited for deep snow. you can get pulled by a kite.

Everyone at Holmes Place has their very own success story. it can be grand and mean something like a lot of weight loss, or slight but with a very personal meaning. Either way, the stories are all important, because each of them means a dream came true. Even our publisher, Jeffrey L. king, has such a story to tell — by accepting a challenge, he tested just what he could achieve within one year of club membership. a challenge that was made even harder by his suffering from myasthenia gravis. Getting fit in spite of that was probably an even bigger success than the 21 kilos he ended up losing within that one year. By early march, a new book will come out about his experiences: Jeffrey L. king’s Reset: How i Escaped myself. Here is a preview. There are moments in life that can change everything. Something happens that has a huge impact on the further course of a life, like a great job offer in the positive case or a debilitating illness in the negative sense – perhaps even both at the same time. More rarely, though, there is a moment of sudden clarity, when you suddenly realize what has been going wrong. After all, there is only this one life, but a multitude of regrets if you have not succeeded in making friends with it in time. Jeffrey L. King had such a moment of sudden awareness in early 2005, after a collapse at the age of 32. Others call it burnout. He himself calls it a warning shot. His doctor made clear to him that he needed to take things more slowly to avoid being in danger of suffering a fatal heart attack by age 50. But Jeffrey was too ambitious to slow down. At least, until 14 | HOLmES PLacE | WINTER 2012

he sold a magazine in 2008 and suddenly had a lot of time for introspection – time to reflect on the fact that he hardly recognized his own body after years of gradual, almost-unnoticed weight gain due in part to bad habits. Also of great concern was how he could possibly manage to make more room for a previously hardly existing private life as a busy business manager. Jeffrey started searching, listened to “The End” by The

ONE LIFE. Doors and finally discovered the key – the “reset button” that he pressed to find himself again. To escape his remotely controlled self and rewind to the Jeffrey he was in high school, when he was not yet indifferent toward himself. How great would it be to have such a reset button, to be able to use those missed chances? Instead of lamenting those lost opportunities, it actually is possible to learn from such mistakes, to accept them and to readjust one’s balance in life, to approach new challenges without all those burdens. What had happened? On the outside, everything was going great in Jeffrey’s life. He had his dream job with his own company and the social recognition that comes with it. Very much to the likes of his French mother and her Ashkenazim Polish-Jewish roots. On top of that, she was in the army and Jeffrey’s father was an Afro-American 7th Day Adventist – an explosive mix. It must have been partly due to this conflict-prone background of his mother that she was determined to instill ambition in her son when he was only an infant of a few months. Jeffrey’s mother was born in 1937 as a very weak, premature baby whose survival chances were deemed low. Her grandmother took on the task of ensuring the girl’s survival and making her strong. Failure had not been an option for generations in the family, nor was admitting weakness. Success was important and seemed only to be achievable for workaholics. Fast-forward – as an adult, there was no stopping Jeffrey, with action around the clock on tight schedules. Top restaurants, luxury hotels, trendy parties, cool cars … on the outside, everything seemed perfect, but there was a growing feeling of alienation in Jeffrey.

“I live my life making sure that, if today were the last day, taking a look in the mirror would leave me satisfied with its reflection.“ Jeffrey L. King

Conversation over a “romantic” dinner focused on the latest ideas, the latest projects and mostly “Me, me, me, me, me!” Everything seemed to be as nice, safe and corny as in the movies – but movies can get boring fast when you let them run in a never-ending loop. Even the most sophisticated smartphones will stop functioning at some point, unless you recharge them. The same actually goes for people as well, with the major difference being that, until now, there simply was no manual that told you how to do it. Now there is. How Jeffrey found his recharge battery, what “me-time” means, the important role the Way of St. James played in all this and how exactly the “reset button” works – all that you can read in Jeffrey L. King’s Reset: How I Escaped Myself, which you can order here by scan. WINTER 2012 | HOLmES PLacE | 15

Just for

the Challenge Everyone needs a goal. After fitness instructor Justin Miles was brain-damaged in a car accident, he decided that his goal was to become a real-life Indiana Jones.

Text: Justin Miles

n March 2, 1999, Justin Miles had a superb career in the fitness industry with a broad range of clients, from elite athletes to people preparing for roles on stage and screen. By the end of the day on March 3, his career – in fact his whole life – lay in tatters. He was on his way to a training course when the car he was travelling in was involved in an accident, sending it cartwheeling along the highway. Four-and-a-half hours was the time it took for emergency services to cut him from the mangled wreck. Justin awoke five days later. His brain had been shaken around in his skull during the accident so much that it caused severe bruising and a hemorrhage, leaving him

with brain damage and unable to walk or talk properly. The medical team overseeing his case advised Justin not to expect to be able to return to full-time work for somewhere in the region of three years, and to expect some aspects of his movement and speech never to return. They were wrong. Every fitness instructor understands the importance of goal-setting,

and Justin set his. As he “spent hour after hour ’sat‛ doing not-a-lot” (to use his own words), he developed an idea: In 10 years’ time, he wanted to become a full-time adventurer, a cross between Indiana Jones and Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who devotes his experiences to encouraging people – children in particular – to realize the positive benefits of exercise.

action. Just nine months after the accident, he ran a marathon. Two years later, he ran a marathon – every week, for a year. Now, Justin is “living the dream.” As a full-time adventurer, he takes on challenges large and small, using each one of them to promote healthy living choices and to raise the profile of his favorite charity, the Children’s Trust. Having spent a lot of time in jungles and deserts, Justin has now turned his attention to the coldest regions on earth. This year, he is joining a team to become the first to walk to the very center of the Arctic Ocean and will use this experience to launch an education program aimed at seven-to-11-year-olds. In 2012 as well, Justin will lead a group of people from all walks of life to the top of Kilimanjaro and build a team to tackle the very mission that killed Captain Scott: to walk from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again

Justin’s projects are funded by commercial sponsorship. To find out how your company could become involved or to find out more about Justin Miles, you can visit his website at www.justforthechallenge.com. With his goals firmly set in stone and a timeframe of 10 years in which to execute his plan, Justin started turning his dream into a reality. Despite the bleak forecast of the medical team, his self-administered “recovery plan” kicked into

(nobody, to date, has yet completed the mammoth 2,200 km trek). When asked how he does the things he does, Justin replies: “Anyone can do anything they want to do. All they have to do is to find a way to make it happen.” WINTER 2012 | HOLMES PLACE | 19

FRIENDSHIP P PR ROGRAM

Interview

THE HEALTHMAKER Dr. Carsten Lekutat has his own featured health show on German TV (WDR, “The Healthmaker”). In an interview with One Life, he recommends certain food combos while cautioning against others.

Text and Interview: Claudia Wiegand | Photos: © Barbara Dudzińska, © Barbara Helgason - Fotolia.com

is it true that it is recommended to have a glass of orange juice with your steak? It really is the case that some nutrients can better be processed when consumed in certain combinations. This is particularly true for minerals like iron. Vitamin C can indeed help the intake of iron from vegetables or fruits, which is important info for vegetarians. With

meat, however, it hardly makes a difference. are there any substances that work the opposite way? Coffee and black tea, or red wine. Vegetarians should keep in mind that oxalic acid in spinach, parsley, rhubarb or beets can decrease the intake of iron, just like Coca Cola or similar carbonated soft drinks.

What about other minerals? For calcium and magnesium, it is pretty similar: Vitamin C has a positive effect on how they are processed. Phosphate from soft drinks or hotdogs works the opposite way. Too much alcohol or spinach is bad as well. But at least spinach is still a vegetable and not chewing-gum…

TASTY FOOD & TASTY CHEF Together with his mother Sevilay, Erdal “Eddy” Asci runs the Green Apple Lounge, a restaurant in Holmes Place at the Berlin Gendarmenmarkt. His recipe for success is an international, fresh and creative cuisine, which even fulfills special requests. A restaurant that shows how creative, healthy and varied organic and other food can be is situated at the Gendarmenmarkt Holmes Place in Berlin. Erdal “Eddy” Asci, his mother Sevilay and chef Michael Drenske are serving weekly menus of delicious healthy meals at competitive prices. Every day, everything is cooked fresh without using anything deep-frozen. On top of that, they even take requests from their guests, because Eddy & Co. value a friendly atmosphere “with tasty food and a

tasty chef.” They are already famous for their healthy variations on typical fastfood dishes, such as organic or chicken burgers, complete with ever-new creative sauce ideas. Be it cream cheese, grapes and chili one day or cream cheese with mustard the next - it never gets boring. The main goal for 2012 is even more organic foods. WINTER 2012 | HOLmES PLacE | 21

Prague marathon

Can it really be fun to play golf in the snow? That is what the Swiss hosts are claiming for this event. Funnily enough, Rudyard Kipling, the author of The Jungle Book, is credited with having invented the sport.

The Marathon of Prague in the Czech Republic is one of the most beautiful in the world, leading right through the medieval city. With only about 10 meters of difference in height, it is relatively flat and thus also well-suited for beginners.

Nutrition

Eat Well Improve your mood by eating nuts, stay active thanks to dried fruit and be aware of what you eat at your desk: 10 valuable nutrition tips by Holmes Place expert Gemma Bischoff.

1

Got snow energy? During the winter months, it is essential that you have a good energy source to keep you going. Snowboarding or skiing all day requires not only a good breakfast (see point 4), but also great snacks. A suitable choice would be a handful of mixed nuts and dried fruit – the sugars in the fruits give you instant energy, while the fats from the nuts give you a longterm energy source to keep you going until the last lift closes.

2

The sunshine vitamin Do you arrive at work in the dark and leave in the dark? If so, you could be at risk of vitamin D deficiency this winter. To support a healthy immune system, ensure that you get plenty of vitamin

26 | HOLmES PLacE | WINTER 2012

D-rich foods (salmon, mackerel, sardines, egg yolks). If you take a vitamin D supplement during the winter, make sure it is vitamin D3, as this is the type we get from sunlight exposure (vitamin D2 occurs naturally in most diets).

3

Desk lunches boost snacking A new study has shown that, if you are distracted while eating, you are more likely to over-eat. Participants who were distracted (by work/TV) while eating were less likely to remember what they ate and also ate significantly more cookies (52 g versus 27 g).

4

Oats, the winter warmer As the weather gets colder, we have a tendency to eat more hot meals. It has been known for

some time that oats help lower blood cholesterol and recent research shows that regular oat consumption also affects other blood markers that promote heart health. Tip: Try heating oats with milk, cinnamon and a few raisins for a great winter breakfast.

5

Spice up your life Not only can spices create a great-tasting meal, but they also have hidden health properties. cinnamon has been shown to support the regulation of blood sugar levels (especially in diabetics) and curcumin (the active ingredient in tumeric) has anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer properties.

Nutrition

6

can “an apple a day“ really keep the doctor away? The most recent research into apples shows that their benefits go beyond fiber content. Apple pectin and polyphenols improve lipid metabolism and lower inflammatory markers. Fruit pectin also increases satiety, which can support weight loss. The research relates to both fresh and dried apples.

7

Support your digestion For those of you who take probiotics, there is something you need to know. It is great to support good bacteria with additional “live“ cultures (best consumed through fermented drinks, rather than tablets/powders); however, it is also essential that you have prebiotics to help support the

growth of your good bacteria. Prebiotics come from foods such as asparagus, garlic, leeks, onions, artichokes, bananas and honey.

8

Soothe your sore throat The winter months see a rise in illness; in particular, colds and coughs. Many people reach for cough medicines, which tend to be very high in refined sugar. If you want to try a natural remedy to soothe a sore throat, then mix 1 teaspoon of honey in a cup with juice from half a lemon and warm water. The honey contains natural anti-bacterial properties that can aid recovery and the lemon contains vitamin C (make sure the water isn‘t too hot, as this destroys the vitamin C).

9

Dangers of alcohol Just a reminder to take care with those hidden calories in alcoholic drinks. To compare calories from alcohol to other food groups: You get 4 Kcal/g from carbohydrates and protein foods, 9 Kcal/g from fats, and almost the same from alcohol with a massive 7 Kcal/g. Think before you drink!

10

Happiness and nuts Nuts are rich in B vitamins, proteins and selenium (a mineral that has been shown to have positive mood-influencing properties). Brazil nuts are the richest source of selenium. Although nuts are high in fat (therefore, high in calories), this fat is unsaturated and has heartprotective properties.

Nutrition Column

By Gemma Bischoff Nutrition Manager, Holmes Place Europe

Hot Food for cold Weather When the weather changes, we have to be prepared, especially when taking part in winter sports. Those of you who like skiing and snowboarding know the importance of staying warm with the right clothes, but do you think about what you are eating and drinking?

Anyone who exercises in cold weather needs to take a few precautions to stay warm and safe, and perform at an optimal level. correct nutrition helps regulate your body temperature and provides enough energy for your muscles to work properly. In cold weather, your metabolism increases slightly to warm you up and humidify the cold, dry air you breathe. You tend to burn a few

28 | HOLmES PLacE | WINTER 2012

more calories to stay warm. With each exhalation, you lose significant amounts of water, so hydration is vital when out on the slopes (something many people don’t consider). The ideal foods to choose when you have spent significant time in cold temperatures are complex carbohydrates and proteins (consumed two hours before exercise): Warm soups, chili, low-fat

cheese and bread, pasta with tomato sauce, baked potatoes, cereals, peanut butter, and lean meats are all good choices. It’s also important to take regular snacks to replace carbohydrate stores that are being used for exercise and warming. If you don’t replace this energy, you are likely to feel more fatigued and you will feel the cold much faster.

Nutrition Column

cold Weather nutrition Tips Drink plenty of water (for adults, around 2.5-3 L).

Photo: sarsmis - Fotolia.com

Eat a variety of high-carbohydrate foods. Plan to eat a small snack every 60 minutes (100-200 calories), e.g., a handful of mixed dried fruit and nuts or a small energy bar. Choose hot food and drinks whenever possible. Decrease caffeine consumption (to prevent dehydration). Don’t drink alcohol (alcohol dilates the blood vessels and increases heat loss).

These tips are important for those people doing regular outdoor sports. For those of you who like to stay nice and warm inside, it is still important to take care with your meal choices. When we think about winter, it is common to associate this time with eating heavier meals that are often more calorie-dense than in summer meals, and many people are less active in the winter months, leading to weight gain.

The weather outside might be frightful but your diet doesn’t have to be! It is still important to make sensible choices about your nutrition and exercise during the colder months to save you having to do a complete overhaul in the spring!

The success of our company always mirrors the success of our employees, who are full of passion. Through “The apprentice” program, we have been following 14 of our particularly talented and ambitious co-workers from all over Europe on a journey through an exciting and inspirational year!

“The apprentice” is a career program for our best employees that just recently found its impressive conclusion in the senior management “kick-off conference 2011” in Berlin. Of the chosen 14 candidates, the best nine managed to master all the challenges of this demanding program. With “The Apprentice,” we have been able to make a major contribution to the company’s success and not only met all the goals but even surpassed them. The program included several three-day meetings, each head-

ed by a mentor nominated by the European management team. Mentors were tasked with introducing their individual topics and hosting a practice training based on those topics. They answered questions for two competing teams as an expert and also had to judge all candidates’ professional knowledge and social competence. Every month, a different candidate got the chance to prove leadership competence and guide their team toward the best possible result in competition with the other group.

The highlight of each meeting was the teams’ presentations in front of a top-class jury. candidates had to face the “board,” which featured our cEO, Doron Dickman; chairman, David Turner; and director of Human Resources, René Behr, with the results of their monthly tasks. in a highly competitive and highenergy atmosphere, each candidate received constructive criticism for their performances, their appearance and behavior as team members or team leaders.

Wellness

Feel Well People are not machines. For those who want to feel good all around, emotional well-being matters almost as much as physical fitness and nutrition. Here are 10 tips for feeling well in winter.

1

Worshipping the sun: Finally, there is an end in sight to the long, dark nights of winter. A few sunbeams even manage to break through the cloudy, grey skies as lone harbingers of spring. The sun really does still exist! It’s about time to replace winter fat with winter sports to feel good about your body again during the summer season. It’s best to start off slowly and purposefully by taking long walks. If you manage to catch a sunbeam, stop and take some time to appreciate it.

2

Every bathroom can be turned into a spa! Most favorite perfumes are available as shower gels or bath oils as well. It is crucial to have enough time for yourself, so send the kids off to

32 | HOLmES PLacE | WINTER 2012

their friends and the husband or wife off to a boys‘ or girls‘ night out. Make sure to have some good music ready in the player and then just relax in the water (but don’t fall asleep!).

3

In prenatal classes, pregnant women learn the advantages of breathing techniques that can be used not only when giving birth, but also to relieve emotioemotio nal or physical stress. Breathing techniques can refresh almost instantly by providing more oxygen and can help cure running pain, nervousness and hiccups. Simply try to take in a very deep breath, intensely and as slowly as possible. Then release it extra slowly and delberately as well - with or without an accompanying sound.

4

An ideal way to cope with overtime hours and stress is to pick a very cold day and stay home. Get cozy and warm on the sofa, try out different kinds of tea, and read a long-neglected good book.

5

Women get cold more easily than men; that much is scientifically proven. They have fewer muscles; other reasons include metabolism and hormones. There are some ways, however, that you can prevent that freezing feeling, at least a bit – and not just by remembering to wear your gloves: a) Eat hot! chili and jalapenos contain the stimulating active agent capsaicin, which aids bloodflow and, thus, helps to keep you feeling warm.

Wellness

Text: Claudia Wiegand | Photo: MartiniDry – Fotolia

b) Sauna visits or the good old alternating hot and cold baths, as once suggested by German priest and therapist Sebastian Kneipp, stimulate body heat. c) avoid smoking and alcohol. In the long run, they will leave you feeling even colder.

8

When out in the cold, keep your hands and feet moving at all times. Try light finger and toe gymnastics like making a fist or rolling your toes.

Wonderful warmth: The hotwater bottle from your childhood days can actually be used not only to help cure a bellyache, but also to relax. Alternatively, electric blankets or cherry-pit pillows work just as well. Warmth helps to relax muscles and enlarge blood vessels and, thus, improve circulation. It also has a positive effect on the metabolism, helps against cramps and even strengthens your immune system. A win-win warmth!

7

9

6

Particularly in winter, feet often get forgotten and are not exposed to enough air. Walk around barefoot at home whenever possible and enjoy relaxing footbaths with scented bath oils.

Laughter. Those who feel well will smile. Those who are happy will laugh. It really can be that simple. Laughter is even credited with prolonging life. it helps to relieve stress and relax muscles by releasing endorphins that can

even positively affect the immune system. Laughter may not be the best medicine, but it sure is a good one.

10

Winter sports athletes have long been aware of the need to physically prepare for the snowboard or ski season. They also know that it is important to warm up every day before actually getting started. However, to effectively avoid accidents, they may want to take a wellness break on the third day of their vacation. Statistically, that is when most skiing accidents occur.

robe, clasps the flask that clearly seems to mirror her curves and sprinkles some perfume on her naked back. Lo and behold, the small bottle’s lacy black flower pattern suddenly sprouts on her back like a tattoo. “Sometimes it‘s all you need to wear” is the corresponding slogan. A few years ago, this is how Aguilera sold her first perfume. The singer actually is a latecomer in the scent business, following colleagues like Jennifer Lopez or Priscilla Presley. While those lines were successful, Britney Spears‘ “Curious“ turned out to be a retail stinker – not really much of a surprise, given her recent history. Model Kate Moss, by comparison, may seem more competent as a scent expert. The only question is whether her nose still works properly. Either way, Moss created neither her own perfume nor her own fashion label. Instead, stars get approached by companies with finished products. Ever since Gabriela Sabatini traded sweaty tennis court smells for her own perfume in 1989, hardly any star

Be it Céline Dion (who leads with 15 scents, currently “Signature“), soccer star David Beckham (who will be releasing his new sports scent in March), pop punker Avril Lavigne (“Black Star“) or Beyoncé’s “Pulse“ – where there is a CD, a TV show or a movie, you can always find an accompanying scent. Even if there is just an image, there is also a perfume, as in Paris Hilton’s case. After all, that is exactly what selling a perfume boils down to, since highfashion brands like Dol-

ce & Gabbana continue advertising with famous Hollywood faces such as Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson. The more attractive the star, the bigger the temptation to want to smell like him or her. Indeed, Patrick Süskind’s novel The Perfume was not the first to find out that temptation can go through the nose as well. Just like in Aguilera’s commercial, the idea is that you really can put on an imaginary second skin. A scent based on the successful German TV dating show “Bauer sucht Frau” (“Farmer Seeks Woman”),

however, turned out to be a joke. A pity, since the Farmer Josef special, with a touch of dung heap and a pinch of numbskull, could have been a hit. Meanwhile, it is Justin Bieber who is really cashing in on a new perfume recently released in the US. It is called “Someday,” the bottle is decorated with little hearts and it is clearly aimed at female fans who can dream of one day seducing Bieber with it… But beware: Bieber’s girlfriend Selena Gomez is working on her very own scent – which might include a fan repellent… WINTER 2012 | HOLmES PLacE | 37
