Hispania was the charm of the Regatta “lles Balears – Trofeo Clàssics Ramón Peña”, one of the benchmarks of the classic circuit.

Hispania: premiere at the Sea Club The boat of King Alfonso the XIII made its debut during the regatta “Illes Balears Clàssics” The yacht “Hispania”, which was owned by King Alfonso XIII, competed for the first time in the regatta “Illes Baleares Clàssics – Trofeo Ramón Peña”, held in Mallorca at the Club de Mar - Mallorca between August 12th and 14th, 2011. “Hispania”, built in 1909 in Pasajes on a design by William Fife was, with its 102 year history, one of the oldest ships in the fleet, consisting of 37 sailboats in classes “Época Cangreja”, “Marconi”, Dragon, Classic, RI Classic and “Spirit of Tradition”. “Pesa” (1911) from Jean Yves Roubinet, and “Peter” (1939) from Claudio Mealli were the winners of the competition. The Hispania had to settle for third place overall in “Época Cangreja”. “Pesa” defended the title, already awarded last year in “Época Cangreja” class, while “Peter” was awarded the victory in “Época Marconi”. The awards ceremony was held on August 14th with the presence of the President of the Balearic Islands Government, Jose Ramon Bauzà, and the President of the Council of Mallorca, Maria Salom. Bauzà visited the “Hispania” together with his owner, Jose Francisco Rábade, the president of the Balearic Islands Port Authority, Jose Maria Urrutia, and the president of Club de Mar - Mallorca, Borja de la Rosa. Edition 2011 has been, so far, the best edition of the race since, five years ago, the Club de Mar – Mallorca decided to bet on classic boats. Its inclusion in the International Championship circuit of the Mediterranean (CIM) has been a great boost for the trophy this year. Besides the institutional collaboration of the Government of the Balearic Islands, the competition has been sponsored by the company “Hijos de Ramón Peña”.

With this initiative, we encourage the participation of our members in the social life of the Club, and invite you to send us your suggestions for future editions. Continued maintenance of our facilities is very important for us, so this year we have undertaken several refurbishments. Most notably, of course, is the renovation of the swimming pool and terrace of the Club, adapting them to the aesthetic trends of the moment. Moreover, due to the great success that every year gets our Sailing School and the suggestions made by our members, since its crea-

Club de Mar– Mallorca has hosted different charity activities

For Club de Mar - Mallorca it is a pleasure and an honor to contribute in social work. For that reason we offer again our support this year to the Foundation “Joves Navegants”. This nonprofit organization provides young people with a form of social reintegration through the world of yachting. The collaboration of the Club consists of providing a mooring for the foundation to develop their acti-

vities with the sailboat “Galaxie”, once donated by one of our members. Another event that we consider very important is the charity dinner by Kamalini, organized last August by the Foundation DASYC (Development of social and cultural activities) in the Club de Mar – Mallorca. About 250 people attended this charity event, whose profits will go to building a training center for women in

Alipur (India). The event was attended by the President of the Club de Mar, Borja de la Rosa; the director, Jose Luis Arrom; María and Macarena Camuñas, Mercedes Viladell, Diego Caro, and Montse Lezaun, DASYC Foundation president, among other. After dinner, served by the catering company “La Alacena de Mallorca”, a solidarity raffle of various gifts was held thanks to the collaboration of a dozen companies and particulars. Last but not least, we have to remark the collaboration of Club de Mar – Mallorca with the foundation “Amiticia”. This organisation is made up of a network of care dependency services, whose mission is to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities and their families. We did our bit by putting the kids pool at disposal of the children of “Amiticia” twice a week, allowing them some hours of fun.

The pool has been refurbished.

tion in 2008, this year we decided to promote this sailing sport amongst our youngsters with the implementation of the course “Introduction to Racing”, addressed to children who have already attended the Advanced Sailing Course at the Club de Mar – Mallorca. These classes are offered every Saturday from

We felt the need to create a special space for holding the theory lessons, as each year has been increased the number of students who have chosen to enjoy their leisure time with water sports. So, since this summer our Sailing and Canoe pupils are profiting from their new classroom.

New Canoe team Club de Mar–Mallorca has launched this season a new Canoe Team with nine paddlers. They will compete this season in the Balearic Sea Kayaking Championship and some national races. The Club de Mar–Mallorca Canoe Team is reaping great deal of success even though it still counts only with a small group of athletes. The idea of the team, composed primarily of veterans, is to gradually incorporate young talents

"Iurisnauta" preparing to round a mark in the “Copa de España” class J80.

Iurisnauta, winner of the Spanish Cup The Club de Mar–Mallorca’s boat completes a great son The sailing boat “Iurisnauta”, owned by Carlos Espinosa and under flag of Club de Mar – Mallorca, achieved the victory in the Cup of Spain class J80. A total of 28 monotypes of the J80 class participated in the competition, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma, which took place between April 8th and 10th. In the J80 class race, with over 100 units in our country, were present boats from Cataluña, Cantabria, Canary Island and Mallorca. “Iurisnauta” dominated the competition from start to finish thanks to its great regularity.

The crew with the trophy won in London.

Even though it only got one partial victory, in the other seven races disputed the “Iurisnauta” sailed leading the group. The team was composed by Juan Luis Serra at the helm, George Madden, Pablo Benjumeda and Toño Piris. The competition was very equal, so that any mistake was paid very expensive since it involved the loss of many positions. This situation was exploited by the team of Club de Mar - Mallorca, which despite not scoring any more triumph, finished all races amongst the first and held the top spot overall. The “Turismo do Algarve” took second place and went to Carlos Martinez from Murcia and his “Mapfre”. Following this victory, the crew of Iurisnauta was invited to participate in the Trophy held in the month of October at “Queen Elizabeth II Recervoir” organized by the iconic Royal Thames Yacht Club, the oldest club in the UK (1775) located in London. The J80 Class Spanish team was formed by Juan Luis Serra (helm), Paul Benjumeda (tactical), Carlos Espinosa (pitman) and Bernardí Matas (bow). The competition consisted of a match race by teams. Again, the Club de Mar – Mallorca team won the competition and completed a brilliant season taking also the victory in the “Trofeo Princesa Sofía – Mapfre” and the Balearic Championship in class J80.

Club de Mar Mallorca News BENS D’AVALL

Top cuisine for the Club Béns d'Avall has all qualities we expect to find in a place where we go in search of good food and well-being. We like to cook with products of our region. Fresh top quality ingredients, to achieve a tasty and unique result. Our proposal is clear: use very few imported ingredients to offer high standard cuisine, with pure and identifiable flavors and aromas. A must for a cook is telling his surroundings. The product will be in an excellent condition due to their geographical proximity, unlike the industrial supply that unfortunately pervades our stores. No sigh for Iranian caviar, nor for the great imported foie gras, nor for the mediocre products of great international tradition, so fashionable today. We rely on our home products, which are truly wonderful. Giving preference to products from here we do not only get authentic cuisine, we also collaborate in securing the future of all the people who make it possible: farmers, fishermen, fishmongers, breeders, etc.
