40th ANNIVERSARY

«Four decades of quality service» The President of the Govern Balear praises the touristic efforts of the Club de Mar Last August 1st, Club de Mar - Mallorca celebrated its 40th anniversary with a night event with the attendance of 800 guests. Amongst them were members of the Club, authorities and personalities of the Majorcan society, headed by the president of the Govern de les Illes Balears, Mr. José Ramón Bauzà, the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Mrs. María Salom; the delegate of the Spanish Government for the Balearic Islands, Teresa Palmer; the Mayor of Palma de Mallorca, Mr. Mateu Isern, and the council of Tourism, Mr. Carlos Delgado. The party commemorating the four decades of the Club was undoubtedly one of the social highlights of the summer 2012 on Mallorca, proving once again the referential status of the entity . «This anniversary is a tribute to our club members, our life long customers, and specially, to the town of Palma, a city to be proud of, being one of the doors to the Mediterranean Sea», stated the Chairman of the Club de Mar Mallorca, Mr. Borja de la Rosa. The project of the Club de Mar was initiated by Javier de la Rosa Mayol, a visionary and entrepreneur, whose objective was to attract the high profile tourism to the island, that at the beginning of the 70's used to have their base at the Côte d'Azur. The Club opened on the 1st of June 1972, soon becoming one of the most important ones of Spain. «We have always sought -added the current Chairman and son of the founderto represent quality tourism, represent the best way of making Spain from the sea and be a reference in the nautical sector, being an iconic club known to all.». Proof of this is that this year it has been awarded the «Q» seal of the «Instituto de Calidad Turística de España» (ICTE). The President of the Balearic Islands, José Ramón Bauzá, thanked for the job done by the team of the Club de Mar for «having accomplished four decades of quality service to your customers, our tourists and our island». On the other hand, the Mayor of Palma, Mateu Isern, emphasized that the Club

de Mar «is essential in the history ofour quality tourism, which only satisfies with exclusivity and the highest levels». The staging of this anniversary, whose main event was presented by writer and journalist Fernando Schwartz and Ana García Siñeriz, also journalist, was simple and modern. The pontoons of the Club recreated the atmosphere of a typical Majorcan creek. The cuisine of chef Benet Vicens, Nicolas quality cocktails and the Big Band of the piano player Biel Durán, which performed on a floating platform on the water, gave the final touch to an unforgettable night.

Owners of classic and vintage yachts include our regatta in their calendar of unmissable appointments The XVIII edition of the "Trofeo Illes Balears Clàssics" definitively confirmed our regatta as the latest referent for classic and vintage boats in Mallorca. The work done over recent years by the technical team of Club de Mar - Mallorca, with Commodore Manuel Nadal de Uhler at the front, has been rewarded with the trust and fidelity of the owners of the greatest historical yachts. 36 yachts competed from August 10th to 12th during the regatta and offered the citizens of Palma an impressive nautical spectacle. Manuel Nadal was very satisfied with the feedback of the fleet and assured that the prestige of the Illes Balears Clàssics increases year by year. The key to this success? «A strict technical organization at sea, the characteristic hospitality of the Club de Mar - Mallorca towards participants, the acknowledgement of the event by the Comité Internacional del Mediterráneo (CIM), and its inclusion, together with the Copa del Rey de Mahón and the Trofeo Puig Vela Clásica of the Club Náutico de Barcelona, in the Mare Nostrum Circuit».

Around the world with Bubi Sansó Club de Mar supports the project of the Majorcan sailor in the world's most extreme regatta The offshore sailor Javier 'Bubi' Sansó will take part in single- handed, non-stop round-the-world race (Vendée Globe) on board the SY 'Acciona 100% Powered', that will sail under flag of Club de Mar Mallorca, her operation base port. Sansó hoisted the banner of Club de Mar-Mallorca last May 12th, in a ceremony that was attended by a group of pupils from our sailing school and several members of the Fundació Joves Navegants. 'Acciona 100% Powered' , the only IMOCA class yacht (18 meters long) that does not use fossil fuels to charge her batteries ,

was released in the Bay of Palma for her participation at the Warm Up Europe Race by a fleet of 50 vessels of the Asociación de Navegantes del Mediterráneo (ADN), that held their nautical meeting the same day in collaboration with the Club de Mar. The Vendée Globe is the world's toughest race. It consists of circumnavigating the globe single-handed with no scales or external aid. The 2012 edition (it is organized every 4 years) will leave from Les Sables d'Olone (France) on November 10th, where it will finish three months later. A total of 19 boats have confirmed their participation, including ‘Acciona’. Javier Sansó, with nearly 20 years experience in offshore racing, already went around the world in 2008 during the onestop Barcelona World Race, accompanied on that occasion by Pachi Rivero. In 2000 he participated in the Vendée Globe, but could not finish after colliding with a drifting ice in the South Indian Sea. He has crossed the Atlantico Ocean over 20 times and is one of the most prestigious solo sailors of the IMOCA circuit. The manager of the Club de Mar Mallorca, José Luis Arrom, and the Commodore, Manuel Nadal de Uhler, agreed that it is a «great honour» to collaborate with one of the most important sailing projects of the Spanish history.

Nilfisk got the victory in the J80 class at the VI Trofeo Primavera, held on April 14th. The Olympic medalist's boat won two partial victories in a difficult day during which gusts of over 30 knots and waves of four meters were recorded in the Bay of Palma. The Race Committee decided not to hold the third leg in view of the heavy storm that was forming in the race course and caused damage to some sailing yachts. The second place was for HM Hoteles, of Javier Chacártegui, and third place for Corb Marí, of Pablo Benjumeda.

The showpiece of speedboating Club de Mar Mallorca hosted the start and finish of the Vuelta a Mallorca - VIII Raid Motonáutica, the showrace in Spain for RIBs, held on 7th and 8th July. The race took place in speed and connection stages. There was also a preliminary stage from Club de Mar - Mallorca to Port Adriano, from where the participants headed towards Marina Tramontana-Port Sóller , then RCN Port Pollença, to finish the first day in Alcudiamar. On 8th July the stage was raced between Alcudiamar and Cala Ratjada, from where they sailed to the Club Nàutic Sa Ràpita. The last stage, a speed one, finished in Palma.

SOCIAL COMMITMENT

20 years of support Joves Navegants On the occasion of their twentieth anniversary, the Fundació Joves Navegants de Balears held on Saturday 26th of May the first Gymkanavela Joves Navegants. The race, organized in collaboration with Club de

Mar-Mallorca, was addressed to cruise ships, that had to count on board with at least two crew members, aged 14 to 18, selected by the Fundació Joves Navegants. This foundation was founded in 1992 to develop

educational sailing programs for young people at risk of social exclusion. Since then it counts with the support of Club de Mar. In the picture, sailing yacht ‘Galaxie' of the foundation.

SAILING SCHOOL

Zabell bets on sailing in school The twice Olympic champion handed out the school certificates to the pupils of the Sailing School Zabell with pupils of Club de Mar

Theresa Zabell, vicepresident of the Spanish Olympic Commitée (COE) and twice Olympic champion (Barcelona 92 and Atlanta 96), participated last August 17th in the delivery of diplomas of the Sailing School Club de Mar in her condition of President of Ecomar. The objective of this foundation is to make the pupils of Spanish sailing schools aware of the importance of protecting marine ecosystems. The yachtswoman was pleased with

the results of the Spanish sailing team in London 2012, that obtained two gold medals, but she remarked that to maintain this level it would be convenient to introduce sailing as a school subject. Theresa Zabell considers that sail training is generally «good», proof of that is that in summer "yachts club are full». «The only thing I miss -she added- is that in winter, sailing should be part of the scholar sport program. Bearing in mind

that we count with more than 7.800 kilometers of coastline, I also thought that sailing should be present in school, as is happens in France and many other countries. This would be a qualitative leap and would ensure for the future good results in this sport». The Chairman of Club de Mar Mallorca, Borja de la Rosa, who participated in the awarding of diplomas, encouraged the pupils to «follow the advice» of Theresa Zabell for the entity may have in the future «the pride» of having a representative at the Olympic Games. Club de Mar participates with the program Grímpola Ecomar, which said Zabell, gives «a quality bonus» to the sail courses that nautical clubs organize in summer. «We want the children, in addition to learning to sail, leaving these courses with superior knowledge, knowing that taking care of the sea is everyone's task».

INTRODUCTION INTO SAILING

The feast of local sailing 61 boats took part in Don Marcial's regatta SY 'Vell Marí V', of Juan Cabrer, won the traditional Regatta of the "Fuerzas Armadas" in the Cruiser Divison, organized this year by corresponding turn by Club de Mar - Mallorca. This race, that started as a modest brotherhood day, has become, thanks to the collaboration of the yacht clubs in the Bay of Palma and to many sailors and sailing fans, in a regatta with high participation level. 61 boats took part in the 2012 edition, celebrated last June 11th. All divisions held a coastal cruise in the Bay of Palma which ended in the West Dyke. The fleet was composed of very different units, amongst them TP52 'Aifos' of the Armada Española, small monotypes from the division J80 or Platu 25 and several lateen sailboats. 'Aifos' was the fastest cruise boat to complete the course in just over an hour and a half, however, after the time correction, victory was for 'Vell Marí V', of Juan Cabrer, followed by 'Nadir V', of Pedro Vaquer. 'Lazy Daisy', of Germán Gil won in the category Promotion. Second place went to 'Trick 17', of Joan Lozano. 'Annika', of Miquel Rigo, won in the Lateen Sail Division overcoming 'Tinita', of Pere Reus, who finished second, and 'Sant Jaume', of Moisés Pablo Ramón, who got the third place.

The prize giving ceremony was held in the Club de Mar and provided an excellent opportunity to pay tribute to the president of the Comisión Naval de Regatas and Sail Delegate of the Navy, Rear Admiral Marcial Sánchez Barcaiztegui, who first promoted this race and who passed away soon after, on July 2nd, at the age of 93.

Exporting sailing culture to the Mainland A group of 23 students and two teachers of Public School Ramón y Cajal from Cuenca had last 5th of June their first experience in sailing at the Club de Mar - Mallorca. The story of these pupils is quite peculiar. Their teachers were informed by the press that nautical clubs in the Balearic Islands offer free activities and requested permission to Club de Mar-Mallorca to qualify for the introduction course taking advantage of their visit to Mallorca on their school trip. Initially, the introduction courses were only addressed to Balearic Schools, as never before a demand had been placed by an institute from the mainland. Club de Mar-Mallorca felt that no borders should exist when disseminating seafaring culture, and that it should welcome the pupils from Cuen-

REPORT / Iconic boats

The Legend of Tabarly Two sailboats of the 'Pen Duick' docked last month of August at the Club de Mar Club de Mar - Mallorca received last month of August the visit of two sailboats of the Pen Duick saga. These offshore racing boats were built between the 60's and 70's of last century by legendary French sailor Eric Tabarly. The boats stayed in Palma during two days. The schooner 'Pen Duick III', a unity with aluminium hull of 17,45 meters length with which Tabarly won the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race in 1967, and the 'Pen Duick VI', a ketch of 22 meters, also made of aluminium, the last sailing yacht of this mythical saga.

El Pen Duick VI en el Club de Mar

Frenchman Eric Tabarly was an innovative sailor thanks to his aviations training and passion for offshore racing. The name of all his boats was inherited of the classic yacht purchased by his father,

Guy Tabarly, in 1938, a wooden sailing boat of 15 meters. 'Pen Duick III' won almost every race in which she took part in the following two years after her launch in 1989, and was used by Jean-François Coste to participate in the first edition of the VendÊe Globe. Meanwhile, 'Pen Duick VI' was built in 1973 to participate at the Whitbread (now called Volvo Ocean Race), a race where Tabarly broke her mast and could not get the victory. However, the French raceman won with her the Transat in 1976, one of the most famous races of all times. Both vessels, that belonged to different owners, are in perfect condition. Currently they make part of the Foundation 'Pen Duick', created to keep the legate of Tabarly alife and active. Eric Tabarly, born in Nantes in 1931, disappeared on June 13, 1998, after falling into the water at 40 nm southwest from Milford Haven, not far from the coast of Wales, when sailing with some friends on board the 'Pen Duick I'. No one can survive more than a few hours in water at 11 degrees.
