CHILDREN’S ROOM RENOVATIONS AT GORDON AVENUE LIBRARY WILL BE COMPLETE AT THE END OF MAY Gordon Avenue Library has been closed for renovations since April 10 but will reopen in time for summer reading with a brand new children’s room concept. The room is adorned with a woodland forest theme complete with a waterfall and stream design that flows throughout the space. In addition to new lighting and fixtures in the children’s room, the library’s restrooms have been renovated and are now fully ADA compliant. Stop by to see the new design!

GET PEACEFUL: WHAT IS MINDFULNESS? Tuesday, June 12 at 6:30-7pm In this workshop, Robert Hodge, teacher at White Hall Meditation, will explore this question and lead some practice exercises including a short meditation.

Wednesdays at 10:30-11am JUNE 6 – JULY 25 A half hour of fun that promotes verbal, motor, and social skills using short books, puppets, fingerplays, music and flannel stories. Each class concludes with a short social playtime. For ages 1-2 with an accompanying caregiver. Siblings welcome.

PRINCESS BALLET

Friday, June 29 at 2-3pm Join us as we welcome two ballerinas from the Charlottesville Ballet to share their “Princess Ballerina” program. They will teach us dance moves and introduce fun activities to bring us the magic of ballet. Ages 4-6.

INEDIBLE JEWELRY

Tuesday, July 17 at 6:30-8:30pm Miniatures artist Jessica Partain will cover basic techniques in working with polymer clay to make food items and turn them into earrings or necklaces. At this session you’ll make s’mores and frozen pops.

Grades 7 to adult.

Required registration begins June 1.

Saturday, June 9 between 10am-2pm Start your summer with a new pair of flip flops. Drop by the library and decorate a pair of flip flops. We have gems, flowers and other materials to make your LEGO CREATIONS & INSPIRATIONS flip flops unique. Ages 5+.

Saturday, July 21 at 10am-2pm Come join us to build with LEGOs. Bring your LOCAL CHILDREN’S AUTHOR creativity and imagination. We will supply the rest.

STORYTIME Ages 5+.

Wednesday, June 13 at 10:30-11am Join us when local author, Kimberly Schmidt, reads her books that feature goats, chickens, horses, dogs and cats from her local Scottsville Farm. Weather permitting, she may introduce us to one of the real animals in her books! Ages 5+. Younger children welcome with an adult.

DRAW YOUR OWN MANGA

Tuesday, June 19 at 2-4pm Join artist Michelle Nevarr in this introductory hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to create your own manga. Grades 6-12.

DISCOVER THE JAMES RIVER

Wednesday, June 20 at 10-11am The Virginia Museum of Natural History will be here to teach us all about the animals and wildlife that make the James River home. This hands-on program will consist of many items for children to explore. Ages 6+. Younger siblings welcome with adult caregiver.

GETTING STARTED AT PVCC

Thursday, August 9 at 6-7pm PVCC’s outreach manager, Denise McClanahan, will be here to provide an introduction to PVCC’s degree and certificate programs. Placement test materials and other information will be available.

Tuesday, August 28 at 6-8pm Have you ever wanted to know why mushrooms are good for you? Have you ever wanted to know what to do with them? How to preserve them? How to use them to the maximum of their benefits? How to find and identify wild mushrooms? Join Bryan and Rachel Hice of WillowTree Farm as they share with you the multiple uses and wonderful benefits of mushrooms.
