Fall is a busy and beautiful time of year. Along with the excitement of returning to school, getting back to work after summer vacation, or finally accomplishing the chores put off during summer months, we get to enjoy the cooler weather and Central Virginia’s brilliant autumn colors. And fall is an excellent time to visit the public library.

September is National Library Card Signup Month, a great time to make sure everyone in the family has a library card. For students, it is their key to a half-million books at JMRL and valuable online databases available for research and homework help 24 hours a day. And it’s all free for residents of the JMRL area. Many studies have shown that students who use the public library perform better in school and on the standard tests. For students and non-students, the library is a wonderful place to visit any time. As this issue of “Beyond the Books” shows, the library offers a variety of programs for all ages. Before or after attending programs, the library is a terrific place to relax, study, hold a meeting, or even have a cup of coffee at Northside Library’s cafe area (opening in September). The new Crozet and Northside libraries are two of the nicest public libraries in Virginia and are worth a visit. The Friends of the Library Book Sale is also worth a visit. Great books at bargain prices will be on sale at Gordon Avenue Library, November 7-15. The annual book sales have been held for 50 years and the proceeds directly benefit the library. Most of the library’s programs are funded by the Friends with revenue from the sales.

JMRL FALL NEWS September is Library Card Signup Month September is a time when JMRL joins with the American Library Association and public libraries nationwide to make sure that our students have the most import school supply of all – a free library card. Resources at the library are available to anyone who has a library card, no matter how young. Students can turn to the library for materials, programs and services that support academic achievement. In addition to borrowing books, audiobooks, music and DVDs, library card holders also have free online access to databases containing thousands of newspaper and magazine articles, as well as other trusted and reliable information sources for homework help. These databases can be accessed at jmrl.org/databases. Before they start school – and after – children with library cards may also attend library programs such as storytime classes that encourage growth of motor, cognitive and pre-literacy skills. Getting a library card is simple. Visit your local JMRL branch and fill out a short registration form. Bring an ID with your address. Sign your child up for a library card today and see how it brings them into a world of opportunity.
