CHECK IT OUT BOOK CLUB KITS

You can borrow a “book club in a bag” from the library for your next book discussion meeting. Each Book Club Kit includes a tote bag with 10 copies of a book plus discussion questions and background information, such as author biographies, book reviews, and more. These kits are checked out for six weeks at a time. Kits may not be renewed. To place a hold, visit jmrl.org/bookclubkits, choose a title, and click on “request a hold.” If you need assistance with a book club kit, please call the Central Library’s reference desk at 434.979.7151 x4. TEEN POETRY CONTEST October 1-31

Do you love to write poetry? Enter the Teen Poetry Contest to celebrate Teen Read Week. Prizes go to three winners, who have the opportunity to be entered into another teen poetry contest sponsored by the “Voice of Youth Advocates” (VOYA) library journal. Ages 12-18. Contest forms and guidelines available at all JMRL locations starting in mid-September. One entry per person. Winners will be notified by late November.

THE GIVING TREE

November 7 - December 5 Share your love of reading with a child. Select a child’s name at a participating library and buy a picture book to return unwrapped to the library by December 5. We will wrap them and give them to Head Start and local preschools to give to children in time for winter break. Available at the Central, Crozet, Gordon Avenue, Nelson, Northside, and Scottsville branches.

TRICK OR TREAT AT THE LIBRARY

Monday, October 31, all day Children are invited to stop by any JMRL branch on Halloween day for a special treat. Each child will receive a coupon for a free children’s book from the upcoming Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale. Ages 0-12.

An escape room is a physical adventure game in which players are locked in a room and have to use elements of the room to solve a series of puzzles and escape within a set time limit. Tuesday, September 27 at 6:30pm A child must sign up with an adult to build one house together. Using mosses, sticks, acorns, and other natural materials, create a little dwelling for the fairy living in your house or garden. Registration required and begins September 13.

December 12-15 at 4-6pm Do you have exams before Winter Break, or need to start studying for ones when you return? Perhaps you need to get started on school projects, or need to relieve some stress. Come to the Northside Teen room for study snacks and relaxing activities while you study.

Thursday, December 15 between 3:30-5:30pm Families are invited to make a non-edible gingerbread house. Great art can be messy, so come dressed to create at the library. We’ll pull out all the glitter and glue for loads of fun. For children up to age 12.

Monday, December 19 at 6:30-8pm Celebrate the start of winter break with friends, snacks and a movie. Fandom-inspired treats will be provided. Movie will be PG-13. Grades 6-12.
