FROM THE DIRECTOR Books. Jefferson-Madison Regional Library circulates a lot of them. In 2014, local residents borrowed more library books, over 1.6 million, than ever before. A growing number of those books, nearly 60,000, were in electronic form for use with Kindles, Nooks, iPods and other hand-held devices. Books remain the library's primary resource in fulfilling its educational role to support lifelong learning.

Early literacy Film or TV Food Games (board/video) Health and exercise Music Party or celebration

But the library is more than books. Since 2000, attendance at library classes and programs nearly tripled. More and more, local parents and caregivers are bringing pre-school children to the library for early literacy classes, students come to the library for book discussions, writing seminars, and other events, while adults visit the library for film programs, book clubs, and lectures on hundreds of topics. The library offers a rich assortment of programs for lifelong learners of all ages. This new publication, "Beyond the Books," provides a schedule of all the library's classes and programs for all ages in all JMRL branches. This first issue provides the schedule for winter/spring 2015. I think you will be impressed as you read through the listings to see the variety and quality of activities available at JMRL libraries.

SPRING JMRL NEWS Coming Soon: The New Northside Library

Celebrating 50 Years of the

Friends of the Library

A new library on West Rio Road is scheduled to open during the third week in March 2015. Renovation of the former Phillips Supply Building began in March 2014. The new library will provide twice the space of the current Northside Library and will serve as the headquarters for the Bookmobile. In addition to more space for books, computers, children's programs, and quiet reading, the new library will include a small cafe area and large public meeting rooms. Since this building will replace the current rented facility, the new library will save money while providing space for improved services. Stay tuned for a grand opening celebration of the new Northside Library in April 2015. Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale The JMRL Friends’ spring book sale will take place March 21-29, from 10am to 7pm each day. A pre-sale for members only will be held on Friday, March 20, 5-7pm. Half-price days are on Saturday, March 28 and Sunday, March 29. An Educator’s Day will be held on Monday, March 30 from 10am to 6pm. JMRL Presents the 2015 Big Read: “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri The Jefferson-Madison Regional Library invites all book lovers of Central Virginia to participate in The Big Read during March 2015. Everyone is encouraged to read and discuss “The Namesake” by Jhumpa Lahiri during this time. Throughout the month of March, JMRL will be hosting many programs and discussions about this book and the culture of India. Check the JMRL Big Read website (jmrl.org/bigread) for all programs and locations. Book Description: What's in a name? For Gogol Ganguli, American-born of Bengali parentage bearing a Russian writer's surname, this question is neither easily answered nor easily dismissed. Straddling two generations, two cultures, and with two first names, Gogol moves through life with a sense he never quite fits in. His quiet angst and personal questioning almost derail him, careening–like the train that links him to his father and his destiny—from relationship to relationship. Jhumpa Lahiri's understated exploration of identity and cultural assimilation in The Namesake illuminates for us all the question "Who am I?," while bringing alive the colors, flavors, and textures of immigrant Indian life in America.
