FROM THE DIRECTOR Summer! What a wonderful time of year to settle-in with a book under the shade of a tree, at the beach or pool, or in an air conditioned room. With its halfmillion books, JMRL is a great place to find reading material on almost any subject. Fiction, non-fiction, audiobooks, downloadable books, the library has something for everyone. The library offers summer programs to promote reading among all age groups. But, most importantly, the library uses its programs to encourage children to read during summer vacation. Reading is an essential skill for success in the 21st Century. Yet, according to a “Kids Count” report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, 80 percent of lower-income fourth graders and 66 percent of all children are not reading at grade level. Studies have shown that participation in library summer reading progrms has a positive impact on reading levels. At JMRL, the Friends of the Library strongly support summer reading by funding all the programs described in “Beyond the Books.” We hope you will attend some of the library’s many programs this summer. We also hope you will consider visiting several branches of JMRL. All the libraries have air conditioning and the new libraries in Albemarle County (Crozet and Northside) are definitely worth a visit.
Workshop or tutorial
We’re looking forward to seeing you at the library this summer. Happy reading!

JMRL Summer Reading Challenge
New Northside Library Now Open
June 1 - August 31 For children, teens, and adults
Renovation of the Phillips Supply Building, which began in March 2014, was completed in February 2015. The new Northside Library opened at 705 West Rio Road with an official ribbon-cutting on March 16 and a grand opening celebration was held on April 18. Highlights of the new building include a maker space with a 3-D printer, a drive-up service window, dozens of Internet computers, and multiple public meeting rooms. It is also the new home to the JMRL Bookmobile.
Are you ready for the challenge? Check out JMRL’s new summer reading program. Complete FOUR challenges each month, return your challenge sheet to any branch of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library for a monthly prize, and a chance to win the grand prize drawing at the end of the summer. More information and challenge sheets are available at all branches and at jmrl.org/summer.
The library is open 51 hours a week and offers a collection of about 100,000 items. Within the first two weeks of the Northside Library being at its new location, 14,333 items were checked out. 7,428 of those items were checked out from the self-checkout station, and 563 were checked out from the new drive-up window. 179 new library cards were issued in those first two weeks, and 1016 computer sign-ups were logged. Check out page 38 to see which books are currently trending at JMRL.
