BUGLE NEWS & LETTERS TO SET THE RECORD STRAIGHT… In order to preserve the goodwill of all villagers and visitors who have supported the Brantham Garage Sale, under both its old and current organisers we feel it is important to clarify points raised in a letter written in the last Bugle . Unfortunately due to prior commitments, we were unable to take part in this year’s sale. That left us with a huge amount of donated goods which we needed to sell for the charities . So we decided to hold our own two day sale over the Spring Bank Holiday . Despite the awful weather we still made a fantastic £500.00. Over the year we did car boots and table sales , kind friends sold on eBay and local selling sites so we could do-
nate £250 to St Elizabeth Hospice (The Carla Dawson Tribute Fund), £250 to Diabetes UK and £1000 to Brantham Scout and Guide Group . Anyone writing to any publications, especially to one serving the local community, should carefully check their facts as misunderstandings spread discontent that cannot easily be put right. Our intentions have always been to simply raise money for local charities and not to upset anyone . Many thanks to all our supporters.

Mobile Refill Van
You may have seen that following consultation with the Parish Council Great-Bentley-based business “An Ethical Life” have started to bring their mobile refill van to Brantham. The company is keen to work with people to help them reduce their plastic waste and thus help the environment. The idea is that customers bring their plastic containers, glass jars, empty bottles and produce to the van which are then refilled with items of their choice. The contents are weighed and the customer is given a price. Products stocked include wholefoods, environmentally friendly household liquids, shampoos, conditioners and bodywash. They also provide an increasing range of plastic free alternative products such as loofah washing up sponges, bamboo toothbrushes and reusable wipes. The van will be in Brantham, near the Village Hall on 7 Aug, 4 Sept, 2 Oct, 30 Oct and 27 10

Brantham Industrial Site
SFG representative Gareth Thornton attended the last Parish Council meeting and updated those present on the work currently taking place on the industrial site. He confirmed that the Factory Lane works are likely to complete at the end of September at which point Factory Lane will re-open. Work on the new pump station has now commenced and once this is completed the old pump station will be decommissioned. The roadworks along the A137 have now re-commenced and are progressing as planned; it is likely that these will complete at the end of August. A night closure of the tunnel at Manningtree is anticipated in Oct/Nov. If you have any questions or comments about this please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Brantham Village Hall was commissioned in 1914 by Charles Pierce Merriam JP, whose father Levi Parsons Merrriam was American and a founder of the Homerton Manufacturing Company in London in1877, to make products from Xylonite being produced by the neighbouring British Xylonite Company. Two years later the companies merged and shortly before Levi P. Merriam’s death in 1889 the business moved to Brantham, creating New Village for its workers. The architect’s drawings from London based Searle and Searle are displayed on the wall. At the back of the hall are two plaques commemorating the Merriam family. One dedicates the hall to the memory of Levi Parsons Merriam from his children
and contains the epitaph: ‘One who never turned his back but marched breast forward, never doubted clouds would break.’ The hall has hosted hundreds of community activities and events over the years but back in the late 1930s it welcomed one of the biggest sporting celebrities of its day. Residents in New Village still remember the tale of Jim Pike who was the News of the World Darts Champion 1938/39 and came to Brantham to play an exhibition match against local players. Not only that, but he supplied free beer for the evening too. Player after player couldn’t match Jim, it is said, but last on the oche was Maurie Pinner – who claimed that unlike Jim himself, he hadn’t had very much of the free-flowing
beer. Maurie was the only Brantham resident to beat the champion that night. These days, overseen by the Brantham Village Hall Management Committee of local residents, the hall has seen a number of improvements, including new toilet facilities for people with disabilities but it needs to hold fundraising activities to pay for its upkeep and further improvements. While you might not find darts champions there very often, you will find the post office on a Wednesday afternoon, monthly film nights, parish council meetings, the WI, baby and toddler group and many more activities. It’s available to hire for social occasions too with a children’s birthday party costing just £25.

How Vegetarian are you?
When you look at the evidence the case seems overwhelming. Eating less meat is good for your health, good for the animals and good for the environment. As ever there is a downside as meat industry jobs are lost, but if we eat more vegetables (as we must) new jobs will be created. Fortunately not meat of every kind is under fire; it is red beef and processed meats which encourages cancer, heart disease and obesity. Poultry and fish are OK from the health point of view, but the growing amount of plastic in the oceans might make us wonder about the latter. When demand increases we can breed extra farm animals, but the world – wide fish population is beyond our control. We can do something about ‘farmed’ salmon in Scottish lochs, but herring and other species are in short supply due to overfishing. Why do we eat meat at all? Many monkey species from which we came are vegetarians, but ournearest relative,
the chimpanzee, is an omnivore. Like them our front teeth are good for tearing flesh and our molars for chewing vegetable, but it is also likely that when early man left the forest and walking the plains, he needed to eat both to survive. Come the agricultural revolution we abandoned hunting for settling down to domesticate animals as well as plants in order to meet our need for food. Many vegetarians and vegans choose not to eat meat because of the way we treat animals destined for the plate. Apart from the killing process itself, they believe that injecting animals with chemicals and crowding them into small cages is inhumane and should be abandoned. Health is important, but the effects that meat has on the wider environment is equally worrying. Figures show that of the total mass of the animal kingdom on the planet, about 36% is human, 60% domesticated animals and a mere 4% wild. Farm animals emit dangerous methane and ammonia
Please mention the
gases and millions of acres of land are used to grow animal feed or grazing rather produce food or left to become wild flower meadows. Nevertheless it is a fact of life that nearly all animals from insects to vertebrates need to eat other living organisms, both animal and/or vegetable, to survive. Recent research has found that trees ‘communicate’ and ‘nurture’ their young; does that also imply that trees and other plants feel pain when we cut their branches or pull them from the ground? Some say yes, but others no because plants lack brains and a nervous system. Take your pick; we know for certain that the volume of meat eating grows as our numbers increase and poorer people become richer. We also know that the mass of meat eaten today is six times the level of the 1960s. What to do? Employ a carrot and stick approach with taxation and incentives? Whatever the case, something has to be done.

Good Neighbour Scheme
Brantham Good Neighbour Scheme Since the last edition of the Bugle we have completed 114 requests for transport including hospitals, doctors, shopping etc. Now that Ipswich and Colchester Hospitals are joined together we now have appointments more regularly in both directions. On the 28th of June we took 22 Residents to “The Ship” at Tiptree for an evening meal and a few drinks!! It was a lovely evening, the weather was perfect for a night out. We were well looked after by the staff at the pub and the food was excellent. We would recommend it as we all had a good time. Our shopping trip on the 12th July was another success as we visited Ipswich Marina and stopped outside Isaacs Bar where we sat outside and enjoyed the view with a coffee before calling at Tesco to do some shop-
ping. We then called in at the Chestnut Carvery and enjoyed a nice lunch, it was really good food and very good company. After being well fed and watered we called in at Aldi just across from the pub and had a browse, before more shopping and then returning home. Our thanks to John the Manningtree community bus driver as he is always good company and makes it a very enjoyable trip. With all the above activities we are fortunate to be able to part fund most of the transport costs because of our success at coffee mornings which you are all invited. They are being held for the next few months, dates as follows: Thursday 29th August 10.00 till midday Thursday 26th Sept 10.00 till midday Thursday 31st Oct 10.00 till midday If you have never been why not come along you would be most welcome, have a good Summer catch up in the Autumn.

At our June meeting we went on a Deben cruise. The weather wasn’t very kind to us but we all enjoyed the afternoon. The skipper had lots to tell us about the river and its surroundings. All very interesting. Afterwards we enjoyed tea and scones. A lovely afternoon. Our walking group walked around Alton Water. On their way they met some alpacas which was nice. After their walk, they had tea
and cake which I am sure they deserved. In July they are going to Harwich then across the ferry to Felixstowe.
At our craft morning, we did glass painting and stone painting, lots of imagination was used.In our July meeting we are learning how to crochet which I am sure will be lots of fun. In July we attended the Blossom appeal at Capel St Mary there we

Report to Parishes, Alton Ward AUGUST 2019 Babergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw BRANTHAM REGENERATION AREA
For the last six years, various ‘prophets of doom’ have told me that ‘they’ll be building those houses next year’. I don’t blame them. There are times when the planning system, so heavily weighted against our communities, seems to trundle on regardless. In reality though, there are a lot of hoops to be jumped through and this area has been one of the most complex planning applications that Babergh has ever handled. Brantham has played a significant part in obtaining planning conditions to offset the impacts. That takes time and a lot of preparatory work has been required by law. Now the design and layout of the housing has been agreed, with its own conditions attached. This is the third layout I’ve seen, modified by your comments since the November 2018 exhibition. There will be one main road running down the bank from Brooklands to Factory Lane, behind Palfrey Bungalow. East -West roads will run off that with sightlines
towards Decoy Pond and the Country Park (Decoy Park?) open space. I don’t think it will be an estate of little boxes either, as many have feared. There are a number of design features that have been brought in, as well as a sympathetic colour palate based on suggestions by the AONB. If you want a really good idea of some of these points, I recommend the 40-minute presentation given at the Planning Meeting on the 19th June. Search for Babergh on YouTube. It was broadcast live and will be kept there. The presentation starts at 1.09.45 and I think you’ll find it interesting. None of us exactly welcomed this housing development, but we shouldn’t cut off our noses to spite our faces. The eventual residents will become part of Brantham, as did those living in Poppy Field, Temple Pattle, the Pippins, Brooklands, Palfrey Heights, Brantham Hill and even, at one time, New Village. So yes, they’ll be building some houses ‘next year’.
WORKS PROGRAMME
What can we expect in the meantime? Well I’ve never seen a pretty building site, so don’t expect it to be so, but the contractors have a responsibility to minimise impacts on us. The PC, myself and Babergh will be working to ensure that. It’s also in Taylor Wimpeys interest to work with us, to keep things running as smoothly as possible. I’ve stressed that point with them repeatedly and will remain in contact throughout. Better to discuss than just argue! The cycle path work will continue toward Manningtree Station till September-ish. There’ll be an overnight closure of the underpass only to work on that section. The Factory Lane surface will continue this year, followed by some work on the access points to the housing area. I believe that the northern access to Brooklands is to be redesigned shortly, so that will delay an expected traffic-light control there. The approach to ‘Amy’s Roundabout’ on the A137 is also being reconsidered. Breheney will probably The Brantham

start work on the Country Park/Open Space next year. Anglian Water have a pumping station to construct near what somebody recently called ‘Cattawade Lakes’, on the south side of Factory Lane. As to house building, it seems there’s a likely figure of between 40-60 houses per year, assuming no complications. To build out looks like a four or five year project. The impact will accumulate, but hopefully at a manageable pace. Landscaping and completion could take longer, but it is required and should be insisted upon. I am told that some phasing of work on the original Regeneration Area has been agreed now. Some houses, then some industrial development. We all argued for this throughout. THAT was the purpose of the whole thing. That point has been reinforced in my discussions with leadership at Babergh. With Independent positions within the Cabinet, including the Planning Portfolio, I expect the Brantham Regeneration Area to be a test of the Councils will to make this part of policy actually work.
Council are forming a group to go through it line by line, but it’s a 10-week consultation starting on the 22nd July (for the summer) and it REALLY needs more space to cover. You can always join, or lurk, on the Facebook Group for updates, often daily. Alternatively wave me down on the Blue Claud Butler (apologies to the other Blue Claud Butler owner in Brantham) or just collar me some time. Many do! Have a nice summer, and try not to worry. Call me if you do.
NEXT EDITION, I’ll write about the Joint Local Plan Consultation. What it is, why it matters, and what we can say. The Parish 24

Brantham Over 60’s Club On May 21st, Colin Hopper demonstrated his paper sculpture and showed how to do it. A bit complicated for the fumble fisted but good entertainment. On the 28th - A scrabble tournament with other games or for non games players, a natter. All this after a fish and chip lunch. On June 11th - A quiz (Thank you Pauline) followed by a cream tea, with scones, jam and cream. We have Sandra to thank for doing all the work! 18th - A roast lunch provided by Sue at the club, was as usual very enjoyable. Other dishes were available, including Scampi, Jacket Potatoes, ham salad etc. This was followed by “True or False” where members told a story and others had to guess if it were true or false. Much fun but not much participation. On the 25th - “Floral Delights” Our regular visitor, Pat South did her usual lovely flower arrangements, with lots of chatter.
She later donated these to the raffle. Three lucky members went home with a lovely prize. In August we hold just one meeting, which is our annual fund raiser. So on the 13th, A Ploughman’s Lunch will be followed by an Auction. Members are asked to bring anything sellable that they no longer want.
The Over Sixties club, is the oldest club in the village, and despite its name, anyone over the age of 50, male or female will be very welcome to join us. Or if a certain subject of a talk interests you, you can come as a visitor, and if you like us, maybe join later. We are a friendly group, we have a new committee and need new members. We meet every Tuesday afternoon (bar the first in the month) 2.30-4.30 pm at Brantham Leisure Centre.. For further details contact Shirley Halliday on 01206 395611.

St Michael’s Church As I write, the news is breaking that our ambassador in the USA has resigned. This move followed the leaking of confidential documents in which he expressed his candid opinion of the American president and his administration. Diplomats are by virtue of their work expected to keep their governments up to date and it is no fault of his that a) the president doesn’t like what he heard or b) that the documents were leaked. What concerns me is that another country can stipulate who is or who is not our ambassador but even more worrying is the apparent inability we have to keep confidentiality. When celebrities hit the headlines, there are no end of “close friends” willing to be anonymously quoted in the press. Bletchley Park secrets, I feel, would not have been safe in the current climate. In Morning Prayer this morning the reading was from Romans: “Hate what is evil, cling to what is good.”

Please be aware that we do not have a carpark yet which means that Church Lane becomes very congested during services. Do allow extra time to find a safe parking spot and walk calmly into church! Our neighbours would much prefer you not to park on their verges, or block access to their homes, please. The lane between the church and the lower churchyard is the only form of access to the house down the lane, so please be respectful of this. Thank you very much.
TEDDY BEAR PARACHUTE CHALLENGE Thank you to everyone that supported the morning. More than 85 Teddies/ Monkeys/ Dogs/ Donkeys registered. Competition was fierce. Carol’s Bear floated for just over 43 seconds closely followed by Hannah and Eeyore. Some Bears enjoyed the experience so much they haven’t landed yet and had to be disqualified! We raised about £1400.

Holy Family Catholic Church
Holy Family Catholic Church Ipswich Road, Brantham
What are Christians (others too) to think and do when everything seems to be going wrong ? Perhaps the first thing is to limit the daily news intake and then to pray. Prayer as a daily exercise helps as many will acknowledge. It can be expressed in many ways and we can find out more from the internet. Using a daily Office format such as Universalis or the small booklet with the title Magnificat may also assist us. Attending church on a regular basis is perhaps more problematical. Today there seems to be an emphasis on ‘community’ (on us) which can be irritating at times. One good reason to attend church is to express our gratitude the main church service is called the Eucharist, collo-

The three deacons will undertake pastoral work in their parishes. On Sat. 6 July the other five were ordained as priests; the highest number ordained at one time in nearly 20 years and a real help for the diocese.
Also at the Cathedral in June about 200 people attended the Annual Marriage and Family Life Mass. Couples attending were marking anniversaries ranging from one year through to 65 years. The Catholic Chaplain for Ipswich Hospital is Fr Mathias Odigbo and he can be contacted if a Catholic is in or due to go into hospital and requires his services. Tel: 07951 066607. Dear friends As many of us prepare for our holidays we may have some pangs of conscience as the damage we do to the world is increasingly in our news, whether that be global warming or single use plastic. The overwhelming scientific consensus is that we are doing lasting damage to our home, Earth. Sadly, some find support for the exploitation of the planet’s resources in Genesis 1.28: ‘God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’’ (NRSV). 30

Subduing and domination of nature were themes which appealed to people who were at the mercy of flood and earthquake, wild animals, venomous snakes and insects, and a host of other terrors known and unknown. Many of these have now been subdued and our dominion has put them at far greater risk than their risk to us. Various initiatives remind us of our responsibility to be caring stewards of the environment, whether it be in eliminating the use of single use plastics. news for God’s earth. As we enjoy our holidays may we also enjoy the goodness of the earth where God has placed us and seek ways to redress the damage we have done. I am grateful for a couple of people who have shared with me ways in which Brantham Methodist Church can better serve it’s community but would be pleased for any more on any of the contact details above. Our plans are progressing and we are currently looking for ways in which the large concrete base can be removed and grass re-instated. EAST BERGHOLT HEARTWATCH – COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS (CFRs) Many East Bergholt villagers will have noticed the arrival of the Defibrillator in the Telephone Kiosk near the front of the Red Lion Pub. It is now operational and all villagers are encouraged to “take a look”. This year, more than ever, the general public are being asked to learn when and how to use defibrillators, both in and out of the work environment. The East Bergholt Heartwatch is 18 years old and was one of the first CFR teams set up in the South Suffolk region. Several of the team members have been in service all this time and we now have seven CFR team members providing, very nearly, 24 hr/7 days a week cover. Our area covers East Bergholt, East End, Holton St Mary, Brantham and Bentley and we need CFR’s from any/all of these villages. Roughly, we serve a total population of 5500 of which 2500 are over 50 years of age. If we are to maintain and improve our Heartwatch service to the Community, we urgently need more CFR team members. To become a CFR is not difficult. • You would be trained over a period of three weekends (we would pay out of pocket expenses). • You would be “partnered” with more experienced CFR’s until you feel confident to “go solo”. • You will be an integral part of a huge team which includes every paramedic, the East Anglian Operations desk medical team and equally importantly:• You will be supported by others in the local team who co-ordinate the monthly schedules, arrange training, service defibrillators and provide day to day help. • You can decide how you wish to allocate your time throughout the month and it can be from a couple of hours to however long you wish. If this sounds interesting and worthwhile, call Carol Moss on 01206 298483 or e-mail carol-moss@uwclub.net

Brantham Scout & Guides The units have been busy getting up to all sorts of interesting activities. The Rainbows joined up with 2nd Capel St Mary Brownies at the Capel allotments for a unicorn themed evening. They had great fun pond dipping, completing a trail around the allotment, making unicorn grass heads, unicorn bug hotels and filling unicorn sand bottles. The Cubs had an amazing 3 days in London and packed in a huge range of activities & visits including museums, the London Eye & Cutty Sark to name but a few. The two nights away were spent on board the Lord Armory in Docklands. The 2nd Brantham Brownies are this year celebrating their 30th year and held a party to celebrate. Jess Spence, Assistant Leader said of the event… “The 30th Birthday party was an amazing success, with a great turnout; Brownies & Leaders old and new attended
along with other guests such as the Executive Board, basically anyone who had ever had anything to do with the group was welcome. The event consisted of entertainment provided by the girls showing off to their parents and all the guests out in the garden. Inside was an exhibition and pictures of the many years of the group provided by old members and from the archives. Food and drink was provided as well as a big birthday cake to celebrate the event. It was fantastic to see lots of people who have been part of the group in one way or another over the last 30 years…..” A Badge has been created to commemorate the event and is on sale at £2.00 to anyone who would like one. The Late Summer Treatment continues to protect the lawn even during long dry spells. It releases only when there is sufficient moisture available.
LATE SUMMER
A coated fertiliser designed for the summer is applied to keep growth strong and to help reduce the effects of dry conditions. A selective herbicide is also applied to reduce weed population. These combined helps maintain a great, healthy looking lawn throughout the summer months.
EARLY SUMMER
Our Autumn/Winter Treatment is applied to strengthen the plant over the winter months by protecting and hardening the plant structure against cold and disease. The feed enhances the overall colour of the lawn, giving it that green look. The treatment also controls the growth of the moss by slowing down it’s activity.
AUTUMN/WINTER
Our Spring feed provides essential nutrients to improve your lawn’s condition after the winter months. A selective herbicide is also applied to reduce weed population.
