Happy New Year! The new year and the new decade has arrived - I don’t know why but I always think a new year is going to be more exciting than it is! Did you make any new years resolutions? - mine’s to procrastinate less, however if the speed I’ve got this Bugle together is anything to go by, I’m not doing well! As always I’m looking out for snow, I know most aren’t keen but I love it - bring it on. The high winds that we seem to have had lately I’m not so keen on though. As usual there is lots
going on in the village to keep everyone busy. Brantham Athletic Football Club are looking for new sponsors - could you help? Brantham Good Neigbours Scheme continues to go from strength to strength - if you have a little spare time why not volunteer it to support others. You might though be in need of the services it offers, don’t be shy, come along to one of the events. You could meet the lovely Kathy or Kay or if you’re unlucky then me! Perhaps films are your thing? Then the Brantham Box Office could really do with
your help - watching films and supporting your community, what more could you want? In March the Village Hall Committee are running a quiz, so load up the memory banks and get down to that. And don’t forget to check out the sponsors in the centre page for the Village Santa Charity Collection what a fabulous job. Lastly I was inundated with people offering to deliver the Bugle, I do hope I’ve got back to you all - if not apologies.

Report to Parishes, Alton Ward December 2019 Babergh District Councillor Alastair McCraw END OF YEAR AND FORWARD PLANNING
A Happy New Year to all. So far, the 2019/20 year has seen some significant changes at Babergh. The combined CON/IND/ LD administration are operating well so far, if not perfectly yet. It’s only been 8 months so far, but political tensions are much reduced. There are good relationships emerging with the new GREEN & LAB members and they play an important part within Council. I expect that to continue. Independent members would always tend to support an inclusive, adult and pragmatic approach, but there must be compassion and understanding as well. That being said, we’re only human. Politics may rear its ugly head, but my principle is always to ‘make it work’. Then make it work better. That translates into a lot of policy, the means by which we can make our decisions. At one level, that might become the Free Swims programme for those 16 and under. At another it will involve 6
Please mention the
new contracts for Waste Collection, The Joint Local Plan, or an overarching Corporate Strategy. That last one is the hardest to explain and can easily be misunderstood. Scrutiny has just been looking at what these things mean to the Cabinet, Council, our PC’s and TC’s and most of all to the end user…. you. Corporate Strategy & Outputs is a pretty daunting term, separate from us mortals. It’s not that sinister. We must have an overall plan as your Council. Ours starts from a circle, with our very existence at the centre. It radiates outwards from there through our main areas of operation: Communities, Environment, Economic Growth, Planning, Housing, Assets and Investments and always the Finances that enable us to do all this. ‘Corporate Outputs’ (a truly ugly phrase), were recently examined by Scrutiny, and describe what we’d like to do in those areas. The next level, the one that comes closer to everyday life in Ba-

bergh, is the policies and actions we decide to take, the What, the Why and the How. Not always completely in our control, with other factors involved, we still require a direction. And yes, it can and will change sometimes. An astonishing number of those policies are already in place. It’s been notable that the administration has developed, or is developing, so many. I’ll pay tribute to the councillors and officers who do that work. You could ask why I’m telling you this stuff. I’m not a Cabinet member, though the Independent Group is obviously involved. I chair Overview and Scrutiny and we can see nearly everything. That overview is as a very privileged position, requiring a sense of responsibility to throw light on the Councils activities. More importantly I’ve always believed that politicians of any stripe should be able to explain and inform about the difficult bits. Apologies for the philosophy and idealism.
CITIZENS ADVICE
Babergh & Mid Suffolk Scrutiny set up a Cross Authority Task and Finish Group last year. Four Suffolk authorities became involved. Us, Ipswich & West Suffolk. We have just completed our report on The Value, Impact and Future Funding of Citizens Advice in Suffolk. It was an issue last year that we had concerns over. There’s been some press coverage and the report will be freely available by now. CA serve the county for a very small amount of money. In existence longer than the NHS or any of our councils, we concluded that they not only deserved financial support but that it was in your interest, all the authorities’ interest AND better value for money
than any of us could achieve. The final report and recommendations should be easily found with a search online, or contact me.
BRANTHAM
As I become increasingly involved in Babergh, I never ignore home. It’s been quiet on the planning front since November, but an application for housing at Church Field from Hopkins Homes can be expected shortly. They have been rather more proactive than we have seen before. Other unresolved applications are just that, unresolved. I remain in touch with all involved in The Factory areas as housing development is expected to actually start this year. Don’t forget that the day to day

Precept 2020-21
The Parish Council formally agreed its Precept request to Babergh District Council at their Parish Council meeting on 8th January 2019. This year the Parish Council will be requesting a precept of £49,346 from Babergh District Council. If you would like to find out more about how the Parish Council spends this money then please come along to any Finance Committee meeting on the 4th Wednesday of every month, 7.45pm at Brantham Village Hall.

equipment on offer at the Lower Playing Field play area in Brantham. The Council has had lengthy discussion about the possibilitiy of installing a skate ramp at this location but due to financial constraints and the physical space needed, it looks like this option will not be possible to be pursued. The Council would be interested in hearing your views about other possibilities for that space and equipment that you would like to see installed, so if you have any thoughts please feel free to come to a Parish Council meeting to discuss them or drop me an email: clerk@branthamparishcouncil.co.uk
Parish Council Contributions
Since the last edition of the Bugle the Parish Council has made a contribution of £150.00 to Brantham Over Sixties Club, £50 to Neighbourhood Watch to support their work in the local community and just over

£23 to Brantham Cub Scout group for their planting of the daffodil bulbs in the village – I look forward to seeing their colourful displays in the next few months!
Brantham Box Office film nights
The Brantham Film nights are taking a break in January and February 2020, and the Committee has concerns about the running of the nights due to a lack of volunteers, therefore a decision about the future of Brantham Box Office will be made in the next few weeks so keep yourself updated on our Facebook page for more information: www.facebook. com/BranthamBoxOffice. If you would like to become involved in the film nights and are able to help with the running of them then please get in touch with me on 07702 490212 or email me at clerk@branthamparishcouncil.co.uk.

We Need to Knock This One On The Head The idea I have in mind is carbon offsetting, the belief that we are being good when contributing to some worthy environmental cause whilst at the same time contributing to the generation CO2. The theory is that offsetting will negate the damage caused to the environment by a particular activity with the same amount ‘saved’ somewhere else. Big names in this are aviation and oil companies – even the Catholic Church is having a go. Their motives may be admirable, but the whole idea is a dangerous delusion: not only will offsetting fail to count the full cost, it will fall far short of what really needs to be done. Let’s look at aviation. I assume that air line companies take account of the volume of fuel consumed on a particular flight, but there is much else to be considered. There is the energy used to construct, maintain and service the aircraft, energy expended in the infrastructure of airports and
the fuel used by passengers and staff driving there. We must also include energy expended in producing aviation fuel, food and other extras on the aircraft, for advertising and all else that is necessary for planes to fly.
Energy is that ubiquitous medium which takes many forms and is the basis of everything in the universe; it was here at the Big Bang and will remain forever. Nothing can move, be made, heated or lit without its presence. Fossil fuel energy has been locked in the ground for millions of years and we began the great release a mere 200 years or so ago. Some 20 gigatonnes of CO2 is released every year; only half or that is absorbed by natural processes, the rest accumulating in the upper atmosphere increasing global warming. So what to do? Clearly flying, like so many other energy demanding activities, will have to decrease if we are to keep within the 1.5 degree limit set Please mention the
by the climate specialists. This means using a number of deterrents such as heavily taxing those who take to the air most frequently. The proposal to build a third runway at Heathrow or Gatwick must be abandoned and the fossil fuel industry reduced in size before eventually closing down. Public transport must take over from private cars and energy hungry industries like cement and steel production must turn to solar energy sources. On the world stage public opinion must apply pressure on people like Putin, Trump and Australia’s Scott Morrison to recognise the scientific truth on the environmental threat and wind down their fossil fuel industries in favour of new activities to absorb those made redundant. Finally we must realise that the continuing growth in human numbers must end using humane techniques like birth control. We failed to act seriously enough in the previous decade; the 20s must be different.

Dear Friends, I write this for the month of February, which is a month I tend not to like too much. Christmas is past, Easter is still to come, the weather tends to be cold & wet, the daylight hours short - there doesn’t seem a lot to be joyful about ….. & yet, there are many good things about February. Of course we do have Valentine’s Day on the 14th. Do you think that’s sentimental rubbish - or as I think, it’s a chance to celebrate God’s love all around us, with God’s whole creation reminding us of His love to us all. Christmas is not so far away so surely we haven’t yet forgotten the wonderful fact that God loves us so
much that He came to us, born in that humble stable in Bethlehem, so that He could give himself unconditionally & wholly for us.
month. The conclusion to Psalm 29 in verse 11 asks for God to bless His people with peace - & that is what I pray for you all at this time.
In my Bible Study recently I read Psalm 29, which talks of the voice of God in the storm. Maybe that’s a helpful image for us during this time. We’re certainly having a few spells of rough weather at the moment & undoubtedly will have more. Verse 2 speaks of the voice of the Lord making “the mountains of Lebanon skip like a calf” (NRSV). I think that’s a wonderful image, of mountains skipping in response to the power & love of God, which can strengthen us during this
Finally, don’t forget to come along to any of our coffee mornings between 10.30 and midday on the last Saturday of every month to which EVERYONE is invited, so why don’t YOU come and enjoy a cuppa with us. If you need transport then thanks to the Good Neighbour Scheme who have agreed to provide transport, if required ring 0754 135 9036.

St Michael’s Church By the time you read this the work will have been completed in the church. We found the platform in the chancel and Lady Chapel was being held together by the carpet, so the work was desperately needed! Apart from rotten wood and mouldy patches that would have fascinated a coleopterist and a mycologist, we found that well meaning people long ago had covered the floor in cement and bitumen not understanding that a damp church needs to breathe. The ceramic air vents that the Victorian builder had put in were works of art in themselves, but not able to function as they should. We even found an old shilling! No gold sovereigns though.

This year Brantham Methodists hosted the annual Service for Christian Unity on Sunday 26 January. The theme was “They showed unusual kindness” from a line in the Acts of the Apostles. The materials were prepared by the Christian Churches of Malta and Gozo who mark the Feast of the Shipwreck of St Paul on 10th February and give thanks for the arrival of the Christian faith in those islands. The service was well attended and greatly appreciated. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference is supporting the rededication of England as the Dowry of Mary, on behalf of every Catholic on 25 March 2020, the Feast of
the Annunciation. Each cathedral is to include a suitable service of rededication on that date as a commitment to renewed evangelisation. Hopefully we will be joined by many others at these services. The initiative is being promoted by the rector of the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk. England has been called the Dowry of Mary since around the 11th century. The title means that she acts in a special way as the nation’s protectress.
If ever prayers were needed for our country then now is the time. The temporary Catholic Chaplain for Ipswich Hospital is Fr Alan Hodgson Tel:021473 728115 assisted by Deacon Clive Brooks. All welcome to attend Holy Family services. Enquiries about the Catholic Faith are always welcome. Please contact the Priory (see above) or a local person who is Catholic.

Brantham Over 60’s Club November12th - Seafarers - Patricia Ezra (Stella Maris Port Chaplain) paid us her annual visit to report on her work with the seamen that come into our ports from all over the world. Helping them with their problems, both physical and spiritual. They spend months at sea and it is very cold. Our members knit them woolly hats, which are collected by Patricia each time she visits. They like them to be colourful, which is useful for using up odd balls of wool. Her talks are always interesting too because the stories of the things that happen are sometimes joyful and sometimes sad. 19th What’s My Line? Anyone that can remember the tv programme will recall that a panel would guess the occupation of someone miming it. Several members joined in and whiled away a happy hour before tea and cakes all round. 26th Lesley Cooper, originally came in place of her Doctor husband and described the life of a doctor’s wife. She has been back since showing members flower arrangements from a “Supermarket Bunch”. This time, she showed us how to make Christmas Decorations.
December 3rd History of Magic by Colin Hopper. An interesting and absorbing hour. 10th Festive Melodies This was a splendid afternoon. Fifteen members of Harwich Ukelele Band entertained us with music that we all knew and joined in with, also the usual Christmas songs and carols that we love to sing. Hopefully they will come back next year. 17th A pre Christmas Lunch at the Brantham Leisure Centre, enjoyed by members attending and the usual meeting afterwards, when we had a slightly more “luxury” Bingo than usual and a bumper raffle with Christmassy prizes. For those members that prefer a meal away from the club, 15 members went to the Brantham Bull on the 4th December for a very enjoyable Christmas Lunch. The Over 60s Club is the oldest in BRANTHAM, beginning in the 50’s, and despite its title, anyone over the age of 50, male or female is welcome to join us.We meet every Tuesday afternoon (bar the first in the month). 2.30-4.30pm at Brantham Leisure Centre.

Brantham Scout & Guides The units all had a busy run up to the Christmas break. The Scouts had a fantastic Nerf gun Christmas party where the HQ was decorated into different zones for the evening. There was party food available too and everyone had a great time and were keen to get involved! Other activities have included a session where the scouts prepared their own pheasants and then cooked the meat along with noodles for a meal; a fancy dress evening with donations to Children In Need; swimming, outdoor Scoutcraft, Chief Scout Award evening, Ready Steady Cook evening and urban exploration. The Beavers have been very busy with a wide range of activities including tobogganing, healthy eating, making posters and woodworking. They rounded off their term with a visit to Clip ‘n’ Climb followed by a meal. They have lots on their agenda for the coming months including their Experiment badge, visiting BBC Radio Suffolk with Matt Marvell; learning and practising the Green Cross code; visiting
Orwell Park Observatory for their Space badge; visiting Harwich on the train and ending the term with an Easter egg hunt around the village. The Beavers themselves also get to choose what they do on two of the evenings. The Brownies finished off their Christmas term with some crafting, a Bazaar and a Pantomime. They also completed their ‘Whole New World’ badge by playing popular games from India and trying Indian foods. The Brownies have a space theme running through this term. They we will be undertaking the Royal Astrological Society challenge for Girlguiding Anglia and the space badge. This will involve looking at the stars, making craters, comets and becoming astronauts and hopefully visiting a local observatory. Other activities will involve understanding how to help each other and a friend in an emergency with a first aid course - this may also come in handy when they make bird boxes! Craft, cooking and swimming also planned.
very busy learning about environmental issues and learning how to use a sewing machine. For the Christmas term the Rainbows theme was “Me and the world around me” and this involved lots of activities focussed on recycling, plastic pollution & renewable energy. The Rainbows also performed on stage in front of other Rainbows to understand more about themselves and their peers. For the term ahead they are completing their ‘Explore’ & ‘Feel Good’ skills builder badges along with a host of other activities. The term theme is animals and there will be evenings based on teddy bears, penguins, badgers, hedgehogs & dinosaurs! They will also be celebrating World Thinking Day which includes an event with other Rainbow units.

Volunteer Transport Scheme
Volunteer transport schemes exist to help patients when they need to attend the practice for an appointment. These schemes are aimed at patients who have poor mobility, are unable to use public transport and no friend or relative is available to help them. Our reception team can provide details of the schemes. An increasing number of our patients need such assistance but our transport schemes need more volunteer drivers. If you are interested then please provide your details to the practice to be passed on to the scheme coordinators who would be happy to discuss how the scheme operates.
New Appointment System
If you need to speak to
a doctor about a medical problem then you will be placed on a call back list and the receptionist will inform you if the doctor will call you either before 1pm or after 1pm. Sometimes, due to unforeseen circumstance and medical emergencies, the doctor may try to call you at a time other than specified, so it would be appreciated if patients can be as accommodating as possible. Once you have booked a call back appointment, please keep your phone with you or remain close to a phone until you have heard from the doctor. They will try the number provided twice, but if they are unable to get through then the patient may need to rebook a call back appointment.
Training Days
tice will be closed from 1pm on the following dates for staff training: Thursday 6th February Wednesday 4th March On these afternoons the Capel St Mary building will be open to enable access to the pharmacy but the Practice reception will be closed. East Bergholt reception will be open. Please note that there will be no clinicians at either building after 1pm as they will be attending training off-site. Our phone lines will be closed for the afternoon. If you need medical assistance please contact 111. If your need is urgent then please dial 999 or attend your local A&E.

Active Wellbeing Service
You can pick up a card in either surgery if you would like to know more about becoming more active. Janet Lawrence can offer one to one sessions on Thursdays at East Bergholt surgery – or can make arrangements to see people at the library in Capel St. Mary. You can
pick up a self-referral card in either surgery or speak to a doctor or nurse to ask for a referral.

A New Year and a New Decade I wonder what it will bring Hopefully it will let us forget the awful last New technologies to make us carbon-neutral Facilitating our need to shun fossil fuels Wind turbines, solar panels and tidal power Becoming a rich tapestry of our landscape Full of trees resembling ancient forests Absorbing CO2, brimming with wildlife Seas and waters crowded with fish Meadows rich with orchids and rattles Reedbeds hiding bitterns, full of starlings Majestic marsh harriers swooping overhead Smell and carbon-free, lung and nature-friendly Cars, buses, trucks and trains electric Motorways treelined avenues of clean air People driving with windows open The travelling dolphins of the sky Burning hydrogen producing only moisture Food shops lined with greenhouses Growing veggies and fruit to pick for our baskets Without fossil fuels no notorious plastics All packaging unpolluting and compostable No landfill, all reused, reformed or recycled Let this be our gift to the next generation Meanwhile I will walk and cycle when I can Choose well, dodge plastic, circumvent flying A Happy New Year and a Happy New Decade!

The Late Summer Treatment continues to protect the lawn even during long dry spells. It releases only when there is sufficient moisture available.
LATE SUMMER
A coated fertiliser designed for the summer is applied to keep growth strong and to help reduce the effects of dry conditions. A selective herbicide is also applied to reduce weed population. These combined helps maintain a great, healthy looking lawn throughout the summer months.
EARLY SUMMER
Our Autumn/Winter Treatment is applied to strengthen the plant over the winter months by protecting and hardening the plant structure against cold and disease. The feed enhances the overall colour of the lawn, giving it that green look. The treatment also controls the growth of the moss by slowing down it’s activity.
AUTUMN/WINTER
Our Spring feed provides essential nutrients to improve your lawn’s condition after the winter months. A selective herbicide is also applied to reduce weed population.
