Editorial

editor from the

Where is this year going? It’s October already and instead of complaining it’s too hot people are now complaining it’s too cold or too wet! We are back to the usual full Bugle, although it nearly wasn’t. I had an email disaster which meant nothing was coming through - thankfully it was fixed quickly. However if you have emailed me and I haven’t replied or you were expecting to see something in this Bugle, my apologies it would appear the internet has eaten it. This edition we say a goodbye to a couple who have delivered

the Bugle since it first began. So goodbye and thank you to Liz & Phil Dunnett for all your hard work over the years. I’m not sure if they’ll get to see this having moved, hopefully they still have ties within the village though. As mentioned above there is lots going on over the next few months. I’m sure lots of people in and outside of the village love attending the Firework Display at the Leisure Centre. However this event can’t go ahead without lots of people to help. If you think this is something you’re able to do - see the ad on P42 for more details.

Don’t forget that the next edition will cover the Christmas period - if you have a picture that that could feature on the front cover (the more festive the better) please do send it in. Also don’t forget to get in contact with any events you’re organsing around that time.

East Bergholt WW1 Flower Festival and Remembrance Sunday November 2018 Plans are well under way for the November Flower Festival and Armistice Centenary celebrations! The church is going to look spectacular with its own war memorial, cenotaph and avenue of remembrance. Please put the dates in your diary to visit the church – the Festival will run from Saturday 3rd until Saturday 10th November in St Mary’s Church – it will be well worth a visit. We are also delighted to announce that we have had a successful bid for one of the soldier silhouettes from the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust that are appearing around the country. We have been awarded one of the seated soldier silhouettes which will be kept by church for future Remembrance services after use in the Festival. A fundraising concert is also going to be held on Friday 9th November involving a number of different village groups. The programme is entitled ‘An Evening to Remember’ and will include communal singing of well-known tunes of the time, a poignant drama, reading of letters from home to the Front and other musical items and poetry. On Sunday after the Remembrance Service we will be hosting a Street Party lunch for anyone wanting to come along and join us. Tickets for these events are now available from Liz Digby, Caryl Smith or Fiona Trott: An Evening to Remember £10; Sunday lunch £5; or £12 for both. Please put these dates in your diary now so you don’t miss out! 10% of the proceeds will be given to Help for Heroes.

In remembering the Great War and the sacrifices made 100 years ago, we are also celebrating current servicemen and women. If there is anyone in the village currently serving in the Forces, or anyone connected with the village, please contact Fiona Trott on 01206 298205 or fiona.trott13@gmail.com Please mention the

Parish Council News

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2018

Well, that summer has flown by, and the cooler weather is well and truly here. After a good rest over the summer your Parish Council is now re-energised and re-invigorated ready for lots of new projects this autumn!

Post Office service in Brantham:

I am pleased to be able to tell you that although the meeting between the Post Office and the Co-op did not return a Post Office Counter to our local shop, the Parish Council have worked with the Post Office Ltd and secured a part-time post office provision for one afternoon a week to be run from the village hall. The Parish Council is currently working with the Post Office to get a telephone line and broadband installed in the hall and then we should be up and running! Please keep an eye on the Parish Council Facebook page for updates on this.

12

Please mention the

Speed Indicator Device:

I am sure that many of you will have noticed the new Speed Indicator Device that has appeared in Brantham. The new device not only reminds drivers of the speed that they are doing but also takes a note of vehicle speeds so that the Parish Council will have data and statistics to support any future discussions about speeding in Brantham. It is the intention of the Parish Council to move the sign to various locations around the village and to enable us to do that it would be useful to have a number of volunteers who would be able to help with this. If you would be willing to be part of this group then please get in touch with me on 07702 490212 or email me at clerk@branthamparishcouncil.co.uk.

Parish Council Contributions: Since the last edition of the Bugle the Parish

Council has not made any contributions to local groups.

Industrial Site Update:

Please see the Industrial site newsletter included in the Bugle for more information on this.

Brantham Over 60’s Club Confusion with the last issue’s report, but at least the important diary dates were included and the autumn programme commenced on 11th September with an excellent talk by Colin Hopper about the Old London Bridge (AD1209-1831) – its amazing construction with additions of houses, shops and special buildings (including at least one two entranced, multi-seated public latrine overhanging the bridge parapets) before and after surviving the Great Fire of 1666 were shown in a 2 ½ metre in length drawing by the speaker. Demolition followed the opening of the

“new” London Bridge in 1831. In 1896, at its highest point in business, this bridge appeared to be sinking, and removal and a replacement was considered necessary; but didn’t occur until 1967 when it was offered for sale, the following year being purchased for one million pounds and shipped to America having been taken apart, each piece meticulously numbered. Reconstructed in Lake Havasu City in Arizona it is now an attraction in a London Theme Park out there. The current London Bridge was opened on 17th March 1973.

Good Neighbour Scheme

Brantham Good Neighbour Scheme Well the Good Neighbours have had a cracking summer. In June we took twenty two people to the Harbour Lights in Walton. It was a lovely evening food and service good and everyone enjoyed themselves. As the evening had been so successful we did it again in August but this time we went to The Shipwreck, Shotley. The weather was great allowing a nice stroll after dinner looking across the river to Felixstowe. During July and August we’ve completed 155 requests for transport to Doctors, hospitals and shopping. Well done to all our volunteers in spite of holidays looking after grandchildren etc they still managed to help our residents within our community get to their appointments, they are a terrific bunch so thank you volunteers. The Monthly Coffee Morning is always well supported, residents come for the home made cakes a cup of tea or coffee and a good natter. The September Coffee Morning will be trying out a new venture which is an idea from Community Action Suffolk (CAS) our supporter and Good Neighbour Coordinator for the whole of Suffolk, the idea will be to share with us post cards from neighbours across the UK, this will also be reported by the East Anglia Times and Suffolk Radio the Mark Murphy Show, yes we could be famous by the next Bugle edition!!! So listen to the radio. So if you fancy a couple of hours with us you are more than welcome.

INSPIRING WOMEN

MEETING EACH MONTH ON THE SECOND WEDNESDAY AT 7.30PM AT THE VILLAGE HALL - ALL ARE WELCOME

What a great turn out for our August meeting. A rousing rendition of Jerusalem and the business of the evening was followed by a decision regarding the venue for our birthday party and even a mention of the dreaded word “Christmas” although on a warm August evening we were able to laugh that off. A welcome was extended to our Advisor, Claire Blake, and three visitors before our speaker, Ann Wilding, introduced us to iris card making. This involved following a pattern to fill in a cut-out on the front of a card with strips of ribbon. The cards to choose from covered everything from hot air balloons to seahorses and Ann had every colour and shade of ribbon imaginable. It was great to see everyone out of their seats talking together and the

hall was soon filled with chatter and laughter and a great time was had by all. Tea and refreshments rounded off a very enjoyable evening. Our meeting in September involved arrangements for a quiz night, the choosing of our menus for our birthday meal and final plans for an autumn social all to be held in October. A busy month awaits. We heard about the most recent meeting of our craft club when one of our members showed us how to make an earring. Everyone had a go with varying degrees of success but a lot of fun was had. We also heard from our walking group with arrangements for a walk in Shotley later in September. Our speaker this month was Barry Spivack who talked to us about Transcendental Meditation (TM). mental energy. It is practiced by tens of thousands of people in this country and millions worldwide. Just twenty minutes twice a day practicing T.M. can help in these busy times to recharge our batteries and bring a unique quality of rest to body and mind. Barry also told us that school children in America are being taught T.M. and it is proving a help with their concentration and mood. As you can see, we have a varied programme of events. Report to Parishes, Alton Ward October 2018 Barbergh District Counsillor Alastair McCraw BRANTHAM, THE GREEN AND THE BROWN Brantham Parish Council had a short briefing from the Boyer and Taylor Wimpey planning team about the ‘Greenfield’ land between Brooklands and Factory Lane before the September PC meeting. There’s been endless speculation over the years concerning the housing provision. Boyer were able to outline the current thinking and give us some indicators of some of the timescales. I emphasize, that this is all subject to some change and there is a further planning process to go through. The housing contract is with Taylor Wimpey, who are building at Admirals Quarter in Holbrook. Indicative plans are for 288 houses, two thirds of which would be 3 bed. Most of the rest are to be 2 & 4 bed, and there will be a handful of 5 bedrooms houses. The outline permission granted 2 years ago was for 320 units. The public open space around, and to the east of, Decoy Pond remains as previously committed to.

So, what will happen now? Well, a full planning application will be prepared and put into Babergh. That seems likely to take place around November. There will be a public exhibition in Brantham, also in November. Not obligatory, they’re still a very good idea. Everybody in the village and area will have an opportunity to see the proposals and ask questions. When the actual planning application has been checked through, there will also be a fairly long public consultation period as normal. Again, comments and responses will be sought from anybody wishing to make them, as well as a variety of statutory consultees. Anybody living immediately adjacent (literally next to the site) to the site should receive a letter, inviting comment. That seems likely at some point in December or even, the New Year. I’d expect a Planning Committee to follow in the Spring. Timing gets more and more difficult to predict from there.

The main point Please mention the

I would take from this is that nothing is going to happen particularly quickly, not at this scale. I started working on the Brantham Regeneration Area issues at the beginning of 2013. If I’m still here, I expect to be doing it in another 5 and a half years. Brantham Parish Council and I are going to continue to work throughout to protect the interests of the entire village in a professional and rational manner. I’m glad to say that all the other parties (SFG, Boyer and Taylor Wimpey) take the same view of approach. Maintaining contact is going to be essential and the information should be as available and transparent as possible. You can always ask me, both what I know and what I guess. CUSTOMER SERVICE ‘POP UP’ The ‘pop up’ Customer Service pilot at Shotley Village Hall (Mondays 1-4pm) continues into October and it appears to both popular and effective. THINGS FALL APART As I get older I am reminded of the philosopher Schopenhauer who characterised the phenomenal world as having a blind and insatiable metaphysical will – or to put it more simply, everything animal, vegetable or mineral has a will to exist. This is not all that far from a recent academic paper claiming that all things have some kind of consciousness and I guess that if so, also have a desire to exist. Why am I so reminded? Well, because as we age we discover that many things which hitherto did as we commanded now fall to the floor, get lost or seek to hide. In the days when men wore stiff collars there was common complaint that if one dropped a stud it would immediately escape under the dressing table. The implication was that the stud did it deliberately; the nasty little thing was playing a game, making the owner crawl on the floor to seek it out. We old ‘uns know that it is not just studs

30

which do this; given the opportunity everything will seek to annoy us, such as car keys, glasses and important pieces of paper. Perhaps the worst example of falling things is containers which spill their contents, in particular wine, buttons and tiny nut and bolts. You only have to grab something nearby or move your hand in the vicinity and they will spring into action leaving you with a time consuming clearing up job. Working hand in hand with their friend the force of gravity, away they go. Just as bad are those which hide; you carefully put them down and when you return they have moved somewhere else. Keys are the worst; they find refuge in a back pocket of those trousers you wore last week. Important papers have the habit of falling to the bottom of that pile on your desk even if you only read at them couple of hours ago. If you try to keep them

under control in the filing cabinet they quietly more to another file when you are not looking. So what to do? The solution to articles which seek to fall to the floor is just leave them there. They might get trodden on, but that is their fault. Things which get lost can be overcome by keeping ten sets of everything; so if you lose one set of keys you may not even notice, saving the anguish of searching. Lost documents are more difficult, so let’s do away with them altogether by storing your passport, driving licence, marriage certificate etcetera on line. If someone wants to see them, just show your laptop or iphone. Some will respond to this by saying “wait a minute, it’s all your fault; you just need to be more careful with your hands or where you put things.” What a bore; if you do this there is no one else to blame and we all like to blame someone else don’t we?

What is Intestacy?

Fiona Ashworth (centre) leads the TSP Wills and Estates team.

When a person dies without leaving a Will they are described as having died intestate, which means that their estate will be distributed according to the law, and not according to their wishes. Set down in statute, the Rules of Intestacy in England and Wales govern who can deal with the administration process, and who inherits your estate. In many cases this may not be who you would have chosen to act or inherit, had you written a Will. In October 2014 the Rules changed to include Civil Partners as beneficiaries, but the Intestacy Rules still do not include cohabitees. In today’s modern society there are a significant number of cohabitees who find themselves in a difficult position following the death of their partner. They may no longer be able to live in the house they lived in before the death occurred, or they may not have access to any money to pay the bills. Even if you are married, or in a civil partnership, you may not automatically receive all the estate, under the Intestacy rules. You do receive the chattels in the house, but you may not receive the house itself. You do receive a financial sum, but it may not be sufficient to maintain you or your children. You could find yourself in a situation whereby you have to apply to the Court for provision under The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, but you may not have sufficient funds to make the application. In order to ensure that your position is safe and secure, take advice from an experienced Wills and Estates solicitor who will deal with any issues you may have and help you put a Will in place. You can then get on with living your life, rather than worrying about what might happen when you or your partner die. The TSP Wills and Estates team can be contacted for more advice in this area on 01206 574431 or by email at info@tsplegal.com. 34

Constable Country Patient Participation Group NHS 70th anniversary Tea parties July

Patient Participation Groups across East Suffolk were asked to run NHS 70th anniversary tea parties in July. We ran two of these – one at Holton St. Mary and one at Capel St. Mary. We are grateful to the organisers of the monthly lunch in Holton and the Beacon Coffee Shop in Capel for hosting the events with us. We invited people to share their NHS memories and we had many positive comments - this was one: “The NHS has saved several lives in my family. It saved my mother’s and my life when I was born; my mum’s life when she had a heart attack; my nephew’s life when he had an aneurism, my son’s

life as he has anaphylactic reactions and also the tablets I take for my heart keeps me healthy. Amazing service.” We also raised just over £166 towards children’s toys in the waiting rooms, thanks to people’s generosity.

Access to your NHS records - action needed!

In May the new data protection act came into force. Previously you could give verbal permission to look at your GP notes if you attended, for example, the out of hours doctors’ service. While you still must give verbal permission you also need to have signed a form in advance. This would also allow access to your

records at A&E and if you had to see a GP when you were away. The forms are available at the surgery.

Phlebotomy Appointments

We’re aware that there has been a shortage of phlebotomy appointments recently, due to staff shortages. Measures are being put in place to increase the number of appointments at both surgeries. Patient Transport Scheme Don’t forget to speak to the receptionists if you need a lift to attend your appointment. Teams of volunteer drivers are available throughout the area covered by the practice. Kathy Pollard Chair Constable Country Patient Participation Group 01473 311384 constablecountryppg@ gmail.com

St Michael’s Church By the time you read this the news will have moved on to other things, but lying in bed listening to Serena Williams exploding in every direction during the Ladies Singles Final at the US Open, and subsequent interminable phone in radio shows, I have been musing on the subject of courtesy. A life long tennis fan, I am mystified now at the amount of prize money players receive, the number of people needed to keep you in the required form to be able to hit a ball over the net, rumours of corruption in terms of fixing of matches, and “tanking” when people have paid good money (lots of it) for tickets to watch you play. Hearing people complaining about Serena’s lack of courtesy to not only the umpire but her opponent (in the end a worthy winner) – interrupting other people who are expressing their opinions on the show, and talking very loudly to shout them down without realising that they too are being rude. Very odd. I stand in awe of what Serena 36

has achieved: a great tennis player who has overcome poverty, life threatening illness, racism and sexism. She doesn’t need to prove anything anymore, we know how great she is. She is however a flawed human being, as we all are. One who in the heat of several critical moments down the years has resorted to rude and regrettable behaviour. Would the umpire and the press have treated her differently if she were ranked 522 in the world, poor, or if she were a man? Maybe. Aggression and rudeness have crept not only into sport, but our politics and daily life. Where once it was possible to disagree politely, remain friends and move on, now we always have to win. Meaning we all lose.

Holy Family Catholic Church

Holy Family Catholic Church IPSWICH ROAD, BRANTHAM After the hot days of early to mid Summer, the holidays and the school exam results, we have moved into Autumn with its promise of ‘mists and mellow fruitfullness’; but we may also be wondering if extreme weather is threatening our normal pattern of four marked seasons. Churches are slowly responding to the concerns now being voiced about manmade climate change. In October St Francis of Assisi is commemorated. He passed from this life on the eve of the 3rd October 1226. His life and times still hold great interest for many today and he is special for those who have serious environmental concerns and want to combat climate change,

PRIEST IN CHARGE: FR CHRISTOPHER SMITH, 180 HAWTHORN DRIVE IPSWICH IP2 0QQ TEL: 01473 684963 including Pope Francis. The Pope’s 2015 document ‘Laudate Si’ (On Care for our Common Home) is authoritative, straightforward, is addressed to all and was well received. St Francis underwent a conversion and became a passionate follower of Christ only wanting to imitate his selflessness, goodness and sacrifice; it was hard but not joyless, far from it as many of the anecdotes about him testify! As well as the detailed analyis in his document, Pope

Francis calls for conversion, a change of heart, towards a new lifestyle and respect for the earth. Creation and nature per se cannot be the problem which points to ourselves as culprits but also as the agents to restore ecological balance to the earth. Fr Christopher Smith, parish priest for the last seven years, is being moved to take charge of St Etheldreda’s Parish, Newmarket. Many of us attended a farewell party in September to wish him well.

Dear friends Can I first say how good it is to be back working with you all at Brantham. It hardly seems 6 years since I left to pursue my ministry within the Lowestoft and East Suffolk Circuit of the Methodist Church, which was really hard work but work which I thoroughly enjoyed and hopefully grown from. That leads nicely into my thought for today, which asks the question “do we, or even can we, change?” Over time you will come to your own opinion as to whether you think I have changed, hopefully for the better. But I know that my relationship with God

has deepened, expanded and grown and therefore I have changed. I believe we all need to grow more into the people God wants us to be, through prayer, study of the Bible, worship together and have fellowship. Fellowship can take a variety of forms so can I take this opportunity to remind you that we hold a coffee morning between 10.30 and midday on the last Saturday of every month to which you are ALL invited. It is open to everyone so why not just pop in and enjoy a cuppa with us. I know it’s very early but do you have the 25th December in your diaries?

Well I guess that’s a silly question for most of us but this year, after a gap of many years, we are going to hold a Christmas Day Celebration Service at the Methodist Church at our normal time of 11.00 a.m. on the 25th. This service will be a celebration for people of all ages so it would be wonderful to see young people, mature people and all those in between there to help us celebrate. We invite you to come with your family. God bless you all From your minister & friend

As suggested by Members we introduced our inaugral August meeting, on Wednesday 8th, when Tania Harrington MA, artist, art lover and researcher talked on “Art Attack- A History of Vandalism In Art”. She looked at works of art that have been vandalised over the years and the reasons behind these criminal attacks, divided into Political Motivations, Mad Attacks and Artist Attacks. It was a serious, at times disturbing, but also humorous illustrated talk. On 12 September Taff Gillingham, Historian, presented a very British view on “Remembrance And The Great War”. Taff advises film makers emphasising the need for historical accuracy on the 1914/18 War.

EAST BERGHOLT UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB THE LAST MONTH The First Team fixtures got under way with a mid-week reverse at Felixstowe Harpers but the first Home game of the season ended with an emphatic 4-1 victory for the Green Boys. Friendlies continued for the other sides with League fixtures due to commence 8th September. LADIES and JUNIORS We are looking for new teams, boys or girls, of any age group to come and join us as we look for the club to grow. If you are interested please contact David George at davidgeorge5000@hotmail.com. We are always on the lookout for people who can help the club as a committee member, whether it be on the playing side or just in the background. If you would like to sponsor the club in some capacity we would also be delighted to hear from you. EBUFC is a community club with very strong village traditions. Poetry Corner

Always there with a Smile It was in his sixties that he enrolled To exercise his limbs and To improve his back In his characteristic white shorts White socks and white trainers Like a bee retrieving nectar Homing in on the treadmill On entry calling out And always with a big smile Hello Jan, Hello Jayne, Hello John A big ‘Hello’ for each one of us His eyes lighting up like a hungry lion As he engaged in conversation His mental larder always full And every so often Hearty laughter ringing in the room For twenty years and more Entertaining all with his thoughts We believe he has an enormous heart One day we heard he had a fall Taking him into hospital But now he is back home With his cheerful self again And the fighting spirit of an optimist ‘I have to be patient and persevere, it may be a while but I will get there’ Daily we miss this smiling Brian See you soon mate Back where you belong

The Late Summer Treatment continues to protect the lawn even during long dry spells. It releases only when there is sufficient moisture available.

LATE SUMMER

A coated fertiliser designed for the summer is applied to keep growth strong and to help reduce the effects of dry conditions. A selective herbicide is also applied to reduce weed population. These combined helps maintain a great, healthy looking lawn throughout the summer months.

EARLY SUMMER

Our Autumn/Winter Treatment is applied to strengthen the plant over the winter months by protecting and hardening the plant structure against cold and disease. The feed enhances the overall colour of the lawn, giving it that green look. The treatment also controls the growth of the moss by slowing down it’s activity.

AUTUMN/WINTER

Our Spring feed provides essential nutrients to improve your lawn’s condition after the winter months. A selective herbicide is also applied to reduce weed population.
