Editorial

editor from the

It’s -5c as I type the editoral for this edition - but no (proper) snow yet, sadly! Christmas and New Year now seem such a long time ago. We are now into the cold winter months and dark evenings - on the upside there is a reason for me to light our log burner and sit in front of it, mesmerised by the flames. So what can you do to pass the time? Well don’t forget the Brantham Box Office has a film showing most months (and is always looking for helpers), BATS have Little Shop of Horrors starting its run shortly and there is a pamper evening to not only enjoy but help raise money for St Helena

Hospice. Add to that the numerous coffee mornings, talks and groups - such as the Over 60’s, WI, Scout & Guides and Good Neighbour Scheme. There is always something running to fill your days. I’m frequently asked why something doesn’t appear in the Bugle - well that’s simple, it wasn’t sent to me! So how to get your event in the Bugle? That’s easy, all of the contact details are on page 50 or you can visit the website at www. branthambugle.co.uk If you are able to send your posters etc in a PDF format (and to really

woo me, send it in a range of sizes) it makes it very quick and simple for me to include. If you are sending text, please proof read it first. 480-500 words fit nicely on a page, if you want a picture next to your piece then wording will need to be cut down accordingly. If you can send by email again it’s quicker and easier for me, however I’m aware that doesn’t suit everyone and handwritten items are most welcome. And lastly, please please send it in by the copy deadline - if it’s not in by then, it won’t be included.

Parish Council News

PARISH COUNCIL NEWS FEBRUARY/MARCH 2017

Happy New Year everyone! I hope you all had a great Christmas. I enjoyed a bit of a break over Christmas and am now looking forward to getting back into the challenges that 2017 will no doubt bring! So to get us started here is a bit of what is going on in your village at the moment:

except to receive formal notification from Babergh District Council that Outline Planning permission has been approved. However as soon as we know anything we will let you know so please keep checking our website and FB page for more information.

Precept 2017-18

As you may know Brantham Parish Council has been exploring the possibility of installing a much-needed pedestrian crossing on the A137. The Parish Council have been informed that the only suitable location for this crossing would be on the stretch of road outside the Catholic Church.

The Finance Committee has agreed the budget for 2017-18 and this year the Parish Council will be requesting a precept of ÂŁ44,485.00 from Babergh District Council. If you would like to find out more about how the Parish Council spends this money then please come along to any Finance Committee meeting on the 4th Wednesday of every month, 7.45pm at Brantham Village Hall.

Brantham Industrial Site

Since the last issue of the Brantham Bugle, the Parish Council has not yet received an update on the planning application 8

Please mention the

Pedestrian Crossing

The Parish Council has had some early-stage discussions with Suffolk County Council which has included a feasibility study completed by the County Council. The report outlined a number of options for the area and the Council are now discussing these options

with the Highways department. Over the next few months the Council intends to look at other areas which have undertaken similar projects for guidance and good practice ideas, and we are working with the County Council to explore the funding arrangements and costs for such a project. I will update you on further progress in the next edition of the Bugle, however if you would like to find out more about how this project is progressing then please do come along to our Parish Council meetings where this will be discussed.

Brantham Box Office Film Nights

The Brantham Film nights are continuing to run on the third Wednesday of every month and many of you have been along to enjoy the cinema experience on your doorstep! Doors open at 7pm, and the film starts at 7.30pm. Tickets cost ÂŁ4 in advance

from Bakes and Blossoms Café, or £4.50 on the door (£2 for under 16s). There will be no film showing in February to take account of the BATS play at the Village Hall, so our next showing of “Bridget Jones’s Baby”, will be on Wednesday 15 March 2017. Renée Zellweger and Colin Firth are joined by Patrick Dempsey for the next chapter of the world’s favourite singleton in Bridget Jones’s Baby. After breaking up with Mark Darcy (Firth), Bridget Jones’s (Zellweger) “happily ever after” hasn’t quite happened. For more information like our facebook page: www. facebook.com/BranthamBoxOffice. If you are interested in helping to organise the film nights we would love to have you on board. You can contact me by phone on 07702 490212 or email clerk@branthamparishcouncil.co.uk, or catch me at one of the film nights to discuss how you can help.

... a search for historical information We’re going to be busy at Flatford this winter creating a new visitor experience in the National Trust’s Bridge Cottage. We would like to talk to people whose families have historic links to Flatford’s agricultural or industrial history. We’d be interested to hear stories or see items which relate to people working on the land, working in the mill, working on the river, or which relate to the histories of Valley Farm, Willy Lott’s House, the Mill or Bridge Cottage. The focus of our re-presentation of Bridge Cottage will be the 1880s, but any family stories which take us up to the National Trust’s acquisition of Flatford in 1943 would be of interest. We would welcome every piece of information you have, even if you think it may be trivial. It may just fit in with other information that we have received and make up a bigger picture. Please forward any information to Sarah Milne at sarah.milne@nationaltrust.org.uk .

Constable Country Medical Practice Managing Demand over the Winter Period Demand on the NHS as a whole is at its highest during the winter months. This puts pressure on all our staff and so it is even more important at this time of the year that we deal with patient problems as efficiently as possible. Please help us by following the guidelines below: • Tell the receptionist the nature of your problem. They can ensure you see the right clinician (GP, Nurse Practitioner, Practice Nurse) and you may not need to come into the practice if it can be dealt with over the telephone. If you need to see a GP, they will be aware of your problem before you see them which helps them prepare for your consultation. Of course, if your problem is personal and you would rather not disclose it, then that is fine. • If you need a home visit, please let us know as soon as possible. The doctor will phone you before leaving the practice to

ensure they need to see you and they can help with the problem. Home visits can take up to an hour in total so if you can attend to practice please do so. • Order repeat medication well in advance and nominate a pharmacy. Many prescriptions can be sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choice. However, it can take up to 3 days for the practice to process you prescription as the doctor will need check that it is safe to issue it. • The clinicians at the practice are not equipped to deal with every problem. If you have a serious acute problem you should attend A&E or dial 999 for emergency assistance as contacting the surgery may delay treatment being provided to you. Serious problems include broken bones, severe allergic reactions, breathing difficulties, severe chest pain, severe burns, seizures, very ill children, severe bleeding, poisoning, foreign body in your eye/ear. This list is not

exhaustive and the practice may advise you to attend A&E if it is in your best interest to do so.

Training Days Just a reminder that in 2017 the practice will be closed from 1pm on the following dates for staff training: 9th February (Thurs) 8th March (Wed) 19th April (Wed) On these afternoons the doors will be closed so please ensure any prescriptions are picked up well beforehand. If you phone the practice the recorded message will ask you to ring 111 for medical assistance if your problem cannot wait until the next day.

Good Neighbour Scheme

Brantham Good Neighbour Scheme Here we are into the New Year 2017 already and we have been busy as usual. In November we hired two Mini Buses and went to Perrywoods nursery at Tiptree. The Christmas decorations were beautiful just what we all needed to raise the spirits of the residents for this long winter season. It was handy having two mini buses as some of the ladies wanted to do some shopping at Tesco’s in Tiptree instead of continuing to look through the wares of Perrywoods nursery. On the way home we all stopped at the “Food Hall” in Marks Tey, all told it was a good day out. In December we had our delicious Christmas lunch at Craft Nurseries, as per usual it was a great success having some 57 of both residents and volunteers in attendance and they all enjoyed a lovely traditional Christmas Dinner with all the trimmings.

18th January with the Local Council regarding the problem, as many people are struggling to get out and about for such things as attending GP surgeries and shopping for necessary provisions etc. we will let you know the outcome in the next publication. Our next Coffee Morning will be on the Thursday the 23rd February & Thursday 30th March 10am to 12 noon, look forward to seeing our regulars along with any new comers, you are all welcome

During the months of November and December we completed successfully 196 transport requests to which our Kay the Transport Controller would like to say a big thank you to our team of dedicated volunteers. They are marvelous people who give their time freely to keep the residents of the village mobile. It has been brought to our attention that there is a problem with public transport therefore Brantham Good Neighbour’s scheme along with other Good Neighbour schemes in Suffolk have been invited to a meeting on the The Brantham

This winter at Flatford Wildlife Garden by Shirley Sampson Sun shining? Crisp chill in the air? If you feel like a bit of fresh air, or somewhere to give the kids a run for an hour or two, why not visit Flatford Wildlife Garden? We’re open for the Big Garden Birdwatch weekend, namely the 28, and 29th January, between 10:30 and 3:30 each day, with fun family activities – we’ll be making bird feeders to take home, taking a closer look at the birds visiting the garden, and doing a fun nature trail around the wintery garden. In February we will running two Snowdrop Weekends on 11/12th and 18/19th. The garden is full of drifts of lovely snowdrops to enjoy at this time of year… We’ll also have potted snowdrops for sale, and seasonal advice on wildlife gardening for you to take home. After a bracing stroll in the garden or along the river, repair to the National Trust tea room for a wellearned cuppa and to warm up! Park at the National Trust 20

Please mention the

car park at Flatford (£4 per day) The garden at Flatford is designed to inspire people to help wildlife in their own gardens. Many people don’t realize that they could very easily be helping conserve local wildlife by thinking differently about their gardens. For creatures like honeybees, bumblebees, butterflies, and many birds, gardens can allow them to travel across the landscape with access to food and shelter, which is vital to their survival. Gardens are no less important for creatures without wings many gardens offer ideal habitat for hedgehogs, provided that the gardens are all connected. Surprisingly, hedgehogs need to travel up to 2 miles per night in order to find sufficient food, and therefore they not only need to be able to get INTO your garden, but also into your neighbours’ gardens from there…… Once they’re in, apart from being charming in

when replying to advertisers

their own right, they will munch on your slugs and snails! Here are some ideas to transform your winter garden into a mini-nature reserve: 1. Safe & warm in winter…. Don’t cut back the summer’s growth come autumn, but be patient and leave the summer’s bounty until spring. The dead plant material and autumn leaves will create an insulating blanket over the soil’s surface, creating a warm, dry haven for many small creatures hibernating away the winter months. You may then be lucky enough to have songthrushes and other hungry insect eaters rummaging in the leaf litter, searching for insect food in the depths of the winter. You can then have a satisfying tidy-up in early spring, once the worst of the winter is over.

2. So mulch more… Mulch your borders – choose something with an organic origin – homemade compost, well-rotted woodchips or bark chippings. This mulch not only nourishes the soil and plants, but also provides a source of food for soil invertebrates. Healthy populations of earthworms and other invertebrates have real benefits for the soil, and

hence the plants, but will also provide food for a long list of carnivorous garden friends, such as hedgehogs, all the amphibians, song thrushes, blackbirds, robins, and many more. 3. Winter hibernation sites Train a dense evergreen up your walls or fences, it will provide a safe haven for birds to nest, or butterflies to hibernate in winter. The 5 common garden butterflies,

East Bergholt High School Association

namely the comma, the small tortoiseshell, brimstone, peacock, and increasingly the red admiral, all overwinter by hibernating as adult butterflies, and need somewhere dry and insulated to shelter. In many cases, a thick evergreen climber such as ivy up against a fence or wall, provides an ideal hibernating place. More information at www.rspb.org.uk/flatford

Brantham Over 60’s In December, members enjoyed a festive month beginning on the 6th with a Quiz and afternoon tea, with plenty of mince pies and Christmas cake. On the 13th, David Padwick entertained with seasonal songs and ballads. The 20th, the Christmas lunch at the Leisure Centre, cooked beautifully by Sue and enjoyed by all. This year, members will be having a monthly lunch at the Leisure Centre. Alternately a meal from the club and fish and chips brought in. We hope that this new venture will be a success, and everyone will enjoy it. Meetings are on Tuesday afternoons 2.30-4.30, at the Brantham Leisure Centre.

John Gamlin

Mental Health - Where Next? Today I develop a subject introduced early last year about stress, for I now have data to support those previous general statements. The much wider issue is mental health, for I read that one in ten children in London suffer significant mental illness, one in seven adults in Suffolk have some kind of mental disorder and since 2010 death rates for the elderly in Britain have begun to increase, reversing the steady fall since the 1970s. The immediate reasons are many; for our children it is deprivation in the home and examinations, bullying and ‘sexting’ in school. In middle years it is more likely to be money worries, job insecurity and marital difficulties. Many of the aged and retired suffer loneliness, hopelessness and lack of general wellbeing. It has also been found that if mental problems are tacked in the early years, they are less likely to appear in later life. As so often in situations like this, the treatment

24

Please mention the

we offer is palliative rather than attacking the root cause. Palliative care may enable a sufferer to recover or be armoured against a recurrence of the malady, but if the cause is not tacked new patients will emerge to take their place. In general terms the cause is the lifestyle we lead in these modern times. In other words we live in a period of increasing mental and physical positions of powerlessness, uncertainty, rapid change and fear for the future. Of course, we all suffer anxiety of some kind or another in the course of our life, but these new pressures originate from technological and economic determinism and the requirement to conform, that is the belief that technology must advance, economies must grow and mankind must adapt to forces seemingly beyond our control. Human evolution has been marked by significant advances in technology beginning with homo habilis (handy man) at the Stone Age which continued for about 2.5

when replying to advertisers

million years. The Bronze Age followed lasting about 2000 years and then the Iron Age for 700 years. Every technological age since has lasted for a shorter time than the one before, leading to the present day where change is more or less continuous. Moreover all the energy ‘ages’ which enabled the Industrial Revolution to take place and grow (namely coal, oil and electricity) are still with us. I believe the speed is such that human adaption is unable to cope, resulting in stress and reduction in mental health. Governments cannot keep up either, for much legislation to ameliorate the situation is so often too little and too late to be effective. So where next? It cannot be backwards, but at least we should seek to slow the pace by taking control of technological advance and accept that economic growth cannot go on for ever. Otherwise the situation I have outlined is likely to get worse. Will it happen? Yes, but only when we are left with no other alternative.

Reflecting back on 2016, we have achieved a great deal including the continued development of our outdoor area from the installation of our new green house to the expansion of our science area. 2016 also saw us awarded as the first Beach School in the region. Meanwhile, our children continue to shine and excel in their wide range of endeavours and our Year 2 and Year 6 results along with Phonics achieved well above National figures. We also welcomed Lily Loveday to Team Brooklands and in a short period of time,

she has become a valued member of the team and shared her talent as a teacher. 2016 also saw the promotion of Megan Glazin to Assistant Headteacher and Becky Thompson to the role of Special Educational Needs Coordinator. We launched our new website and also introduced ClassDojo to share with you what is happening in school. This year our children have chosen their charity to be the Make A Wish Foundation which grants magical wishes to enrich the lives of children fighting life-threatening conditions. Their wishes can range from small to large; from making a film to going on an amazing holiday. Each wish is as personal and unique as the child it belongs to and focusses on creating incredible memories

beyond and aside from their illness. The effects a wish can have on a seriously ill child are huge; from creating incredible memories, building confidence and bringing happiness, to providing respite from the daily struggles that come with a life-threatening condition. Our School Council will be announcing ways you can support fundraising for this charity in the weeks ahead. All that remains is for me to wish you the very best of good wishes for the New Year. St Michael’s Church Friends in SA adopted a new born baby that had been abandoned on a rubbish heap. She had severe health problems as a result of the bitterly cold Highveld winter air she was exposed to, but taken into a loving family she flourished. The Christian Church celebrates Ash Wednesday on the 1st March, it is the beginning of Lent, a time of reflection and penitence. During the service, there is the opportunity to receive the sign of the cross on your forehead, marked out in ash made from the palm crosses of the previous year. As we reflect on our shortcom-

ings, we are also reminded that out of the ashes new life, phoenix- like, can come. The ashes are a sign both of death and life. Within every

experience, no matter how painful, there is hope. Let us all be a people of hope!

Holy Family Catholic Church

Holy Family Catholic Church IPSWICH ROAD, BRANTHAM Where do such principles as human dignity and freedom, the common good, solidarity and subsidiarity- from a Christian standpointcome from? These fundamental ideas are expressed in the teaching of the Church and are found in her Encyclicals (Letters to the Church) and other documents including the Catechism of the Catholic Church. The Scriptures, the long history or tradition of the Church and human intelligence and reason are all factors that contribute to her teachings. More specifically there is Catholic Social Teaching based on a series of Encyclicals issued by Popes starting with Rerum Novarum (Of New

PRIEST IN CHARGE: FR CHRISTOPHER SMITH, 180 HAWTHORN DRIVE IPSWICH IP2 0QQ TEL: 01473 684963 Things) in 1891 through to Laudato Si (the Care of our Common Home) in 2015; these elaborate a set of moral principles or guidelines for action which are proposed by the Church as part of her dialogue with people and the problems of human society. It is worth bearing in mind that if we value variety and diversity in nature then we ought also to value religious freedom and the avoidance of extremes in the conduct of human

affairs. Unfortunately there is growing alarm and dismay at the persecution and oppression of minorities (including Christians) in many countries. On Tuesdays at 10 30am during Lent we will be running a study group at Holy Family, Brantham on Catholic Social Teaching to which all are welcome.Fr Adrian Gates Tel: 01473 726701 is the Catholic Chaplain at Ipswich Hospital and needs to be informed if a Catholic is in or due to go into hospital

HOPE AND DREAMS FOR 2017 How was 2016 for you? As a nation and as a world I think we are more divided than we were in 2015. The fault lines along which we are divided are numerous. What hopes and dreams have you for 2017? Many will be looking for a better year. 500 years ago in 1516 Sir Thomas More dreamt of a Utopia and wrote a book about a such a place. A society marked by peace, justice and harmony. Half way through the last century George Orwell wrote a prophetic book describing Society 35 years on in 1984. It was the opposite of a Utopia, a totalitarian state with “Big

Brother” watching over every action and frighteningly every thought! There were thought police! One vision is idyllic but unrealistic, the other frightening and appalling. Does our vision for 2017 fill us with hope or fear? And what about a vision beyond 2017, do we believe in an afterlife?

recover from difficult situations. People share with me and in churches, the joys and sorrows of life. Jesus reminds us often, that if we have eyes to see, we can see signs of the kingdom are all around us. He also says many are blinkered and cannot see, and do not know God.

May your eyes be opened Most of us would like to see God at work in 2017. to think the world can be a better place and many would like to believe in an afterlife, but with division, the knocks of life, the dreams Rev Andrew Sankey we have seem idealistic and unattainable, our confidence can be shattered and hopes fade. But my hope is still alive. I’ve seen lives change for the better, I seen people The Brantham

Membership

Our main purpose is to encourage lifelong learning for those who are no longer in full time employment and emphasis is always placed on making learning active and fun as well as helping in developing friendships. We have a wide range of groups including language study, country walking, computer studies and gardens, churches and historic buildings visits. In the main, membership is drawn from communities in the lower Stour Valley and adjacent areas including Brantham, Capel St Mary, Dedham, East Bergholt, Holbrook, Lawford, Manningtree, Raydon, & Stratford St Mary. We are affiliated to the ThirdAge Trust, have over 260 members and 21 groups. For further information please visit www.stourvalleyu3a.org. uk where membership secretary Gillian Gibbs may be contacted.

Recent Meetings

On Wednesday 11th January Dr Geoffrey Kay, former lecturer at Norwich School of Art & Anglia Ruskin University, spoke on ‘Drugs, Sex & Death” – the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In mid-19th century a group of young artists began to sign their work with the initials PRB; for a short time gallery visitors baffled. He informed us what that united these artists and how and why they were determined to alter the course of British art for the next 50 years.

Future Meetings

On Wednesday 8th February Prof John Midwinter FRAE, FRS., formerly at BT & UCL will speak on “The Truth About Climate Change”. His lecture will explore evidence that we are changing the climate of our planet, probably irreversibly, and this will be linked to a discussion of what this probably portends and why we should be very concerned.

Meeting Venue

We meet at The Constable Hall, Gandish Road, East Bergholt CO7 6TP at 2.15pm. Annual membership costs £12 a year and this entitles members to attend the meetings that take place on the second Wednesday of each month, except August and December.

Remember

It’s never too late to learn! Join the 361,477 members across 969 U3As throughout the UK today!

How is it Victory when..... I have to leave this all behind Books on the shelves so avidly collected Pictures on the walls which spoke to me The little things that I had received From my family and friends My life is in this room My dreams were made here They call it victory How is it victory when like so many I have to leave my home On a bus to who knows where To a future which has no face How is it victory when so many Mothers and their children have died Grandmothers and grandfathers too When fathers and sons For quite unknown reasons Have simply disappeared, taken How is it victory when Livelihoods have been erased Schools and hospitals destroyed When smouldering from the attacks The city lies in ruins Where humanity has ceased Empathy and love forgotten
