Summer is now edging closer, for the childern SATS have been and gone and GCSE’s and A Levels are in full swing. Hopefully gardens are starting to bloom and fruit and veg are growing nicely. Thoughts also veer towards summer holidays and hopefully some rest and relaxation. Brantham and the surrounding villages are always busy with events and Brantham has its annual garage sale coming up in June have you registered yet? A few shout outs for volunteers needed locally - Brantham Good Neighbours Scheme would love to welcome
you on board. It could be something as simple as taking someone to a doctors surgery for a blood test, usually something that door to door only takes 30 mins. East Bergholt Heart Watch are also needing people to train for their team. Who knows, one day it could be you that needs to call on either of these organisations, do you have any time available to help right now? If you find yourself with some free time then maybe go along to one of the Brantham Box Office events, try the Over 60’s or WI. Or perhaps learn something new with the U3A or Probus
Another beautiful cover photo for this edition. The picture was taken at the picnic area at Cattawade. When I received it I knew instantly it would be going on the front cover - how could I resist? If you’re a keen photographer and have some photos of around the village you would be willing to either have appear on our cover or on the facebook page. Send them into editor@ branthambugle.co.uk

Parish Cup is awarded to a member of the community or organisation that, in the opinion of the Parish Council has made a significant contribution towards improving the conditions of life of the community residing in Brantham and the surrounding neighbourhood. At their Annual Parish Council meeting on 04 May the Parish Council unanimously decided that this year the Parish Cup should be awarded to the Brantham Garage Sale team, led by Yvonne Amoss and Ronnie Dawson. The Brantham Garage sale has been an annual event in the village for over 10 years and has raised over £25,000 for charity. This is an amazing achievement and a sign of the commitment and hard work of all those involved. I know that lots of you enjoy Garage sale day and the sense

BUGLE NEWS & LETTERS Dear Editor, I would just like to say a huge thank you to the three locals currently giving up their time to cut and keep tidy the footpaths. It’s been lovely to be able to walk during the wet season and not come back with legs soaked through from long grass. I have also noticed some push chairs making use of the paths across the fields. I have been asked several times recently if I know who is doing this and would like to name Cathy Osben, Keith Carrington and Adrian Cherry. Also thanks to Adrian for the lovely show of daffodils especially up the church path. They make a good team and I know that Keith has plans to rival the daffodils in the future! Lesley Cherry

Looking at the Family A recent TV programme on Yehudi Menuhin, the violinist, portrayed a side not seen before - the story of his boyhood and early life. His experience was much the same as that of Wolfgang Mozart many years earlier - both brilliantly talented musicians given very special treatment by parents in order to develop their art. It worked; Menuhin started the violin at four and preformed as a soloist at seven whilst Mozart excelled at the piano and began composing at five. However, both paid the price of their distorted youth; Menuhin found it difficult to relate to others and Mozart seemed not have really grown up. I know the problem; the death of my father when I was ten caused me to leave school early rather than attend sixth form and take A levels. More seriously it led to the development of an inferiority complex in relation to my peers and a lack of self-worth, both of which lived with me for many years.
Everyone knows the importance of family life and childhood experiences in shaping lives for the better - or worse. It is here we are born into and accept the social status of our parents, learn (or not) how to relate to others and become aware of our strength and weaknesses. Parents and teachers become role models whose values we seek to emulate or in later life reject. Every teacher knows that class discipline will be far better if the children have received good parenting; there will always been some difficult cases, but sadly the number of ill-disciplined children continues to rise, pushing teachers to seek early retirement and children leaving school ill prepared for adult life. Old Testament writers believed that God would visit the iniquity of parents upon the children to the third and fourth generation, but whatever God may or may not do, it is clear that children of inadequate parents probably make poor parents themselves and whose children in their turn do the same………..
It is generally assumed that parenting comes naturally and that by the process of social evolution it has become part of our genetic tool kit. Within the limits of their ability, most parents make every effort in bringing up their children, but where that natural nous is lacking, the results can be disastrous. Teachers are trained, but parents are not; ‘problem families’ are picked up by the social services, but by then it may be too late to reverse the damage. What we cannot change are those influences beyond the garden gate such as rapid technological and social change, the rise or fall of economic fortune and job opportunities. From family breakdown on the one hand to the loss of future certainties on the other, it is not surprising that more children suffer intellectual and psychological damage during their formative years. Can we solve it? Yes, but it needs a lot more money and effort if the pattern is to be reversed.

Good Neighbour Scheme
Brantham Good Neighbour Scheme We have had a great couple of months once again and completed 129 requests for transport and other various jobs. Our volunteers have helped with various tasks from household repairs, taking residents to clinical appointments, which appears to be our greatest demand, through to sorting out personal computers. On the 30th of April we organised a sponsored walk for all capabilities ranging from 1 mile pub to pub, to three miles for those more capable and guess what, to date we have collected some £800 which will be used to pay for overheads such as insurances, venue rentals and taking residents out on trips, thanks to the people who did the walks. So if you are still unsure about what the good neighbours do; we are a group of volunteers who give our time freely to help the local people in Brantham with the little things that most of us take for granted. We can provide support and companionship to help people lead a more independent life for all ages. These are just some of the services we offer:Transport for residents to the Doctors, Dentist, Clinics or Hospital appointments. Organise trips out for the day. A Natter and a Chatter over the phone. Collect shopping for those who can’t easily get out or take you
shopping and collect prescriptions or pensions. Information about help or benefits are available or sign post you in the right direction and help fill out forms. One-off house or garden tidy, including some more specialist tasks if we can assist such as mending the fence or the garden gate. Help with pets if residents are incapacitated or in hospital. With offering all the above services we are looking for more volunteers particularly those who can use their cars to provide transport on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, If you can’t drive but love to talk or can lend a hand in any other way, please ring us on 0754 135 9036. We hope to run another open evening in September for anyone who may want to meet us or join us look out for the invites over the next few months. In the meantime have a great summer to all our residents of Brantham.

On April 19th members had “Another Try at being Spry”, which entailed an attempt by the members at flower arranging. There were some beautiful, almost professional arrangements, and some not quite so beautiful, but most members had a go, and enjoyed it. On the 26th, Mr. David Brown gave a talk on “Costa Rica” which was a change from the original talk due to technical reasons. It couldn’t have been lovelier. Mr Brown illustrated his talk with slides of the most wonderful 20

Report to Parishes
Alton Ward End of Year Report: May/June 2016 Alastair McCraw & Harriet Steer This has been an interesting year for us both, learning to fill our roles as fast as possible. This report covers some of the more important matters dealt with at Babergh in the 2015/16 Council year but not those already covered.
FINANCIAL & ORGANISATIONAL
BDC’s Joint Strategic Plan has been updated. It is somewhat jargon laden and a little incomprehensible. We will report further on this through the year. This has now been approved at the Annual Meeting of BDC held on the 26th April and it should be available on the Council website. The same Annual Meeting appointed Peter Burgoyne as the new Chairman of the Council and Peter Beer as Vice Chairman. Six members have been appointed as Members with Special Responsibilities to assist each of the 6 Portfolio holders. Housing Delivery, Business Growth, Community Capacity Building, Enabled Organisation, Assets & Investments, & 22
Please mention the
Environment. A new post of Deputy Chief Executive will be created as part of the ongoing Focused Management Review. This will also see considerable changes in Babergh/Mid Suffolk’s senior management structure. Since then, it’s been announced that the current Chief Executive, Charlie Adan, will be leaving in July to take up a post as Chief Executive of Kingston upon Thames Borough Council.
HOUSING
BDC/MSDC have started to build the first new Council houses in the area for over 20 years. The first has just been handed over. None of these are local to us, as yet. A revised Tenancy Agreement has been approved and adopted for Council properties. This is more in line with other tenancy agreements and provides for
when replying to advertisers
an initial 5 year period for new tenancies. A Help to Buy scheme allows tenants to apply for £20,000 grants to get on the property ladder and free up much needed council housing. Babergh have adopted CIL (Community Infrastructure Levy) as its standard means of supplying infrastructure for developments and communities. This gives developers a clearer idea of costs and Town and Parish councils a 15% share with fewer restrictions on its spending. This will largely replace previous Section 106 agreements.
BRANTHAM REGENERATION AREA will have been
to Planning Committee by now. Whatever the decision made there are some points to bear in mind. That was for mostly Outline Planning Permission. There is still the full detail to come before much can be done. This

GROWTH & BUSINESS
As a local approach to our Tourism Strategy, a free tourist magazine for the Shotley Peninsula should now be available. Cllr Derek Davis (Berners Ward) has edited. There is a cycling article by one of us. Funding is by advertorial and BDC. We have been granted a Food Enterprise Zone. local businesses. Capital Grants are available to support village halls, Community centres & shops and other local events. In 2015/16 £104,000 was allocated across Babergh. Please contact us or BDC to enquire. BDC/MSDC are looking for ways to improve the experience of businesses with the Councils. The Open for Business pilot scheme provides Business Account Managers to act as a single point of contact for businesses for all their regulatory and service needs. This aims to provide a more proactive, pro-business and responsive experience for all existing and potential businesses. Both of us will be taking an active

Brooklands Primary School our Summer anticipation. All we need now is some warm sunshine and I will be digging out my summer heels!
The excitement around our Summer term is almost palpable as a few warmer days reminds us of what is awaiting our children over the coming weeks. Our amazing Brooklands Friends and Family (BFF) have been working hard in their fund raising efforts and thanks to them, the children can look forward to playtimes on the field enjoying a game of football with their new football goals. Meanwhile in our allotments, the children will be preparing their beds for planting and to help their green fingered efforts we are delighted to also boast a new greenhouse and water butts funded by our BFF. We also have brightly coloured benches adding some eye-popping colour to the playground too, and we will be keen to see how our extended science habitat is received by the local wildlife. All of this combined with swimming and performances on our fabulous outdoor stage and you will understand and hopefully share in
Our Ducklings have enjoyed their first Beach School visit this term. Exploring rock pools, making sand sculptures and splashing in the river. Our website has some photographs that capture the excitement of their visits. Living as close to the coast as we do we are thrilled to be able to take learning beyond the school grounds and draw from such an inspirational learning environment. Following the coin trail around the school hall our School Council raised a magnificent £410 for their chosen charity. Coming up, we will also be taking part in the Cystic Fibrosis Trust’s ‘Wear Yellow Day’ on 1st July. Getting involved couldn’t be simpler and more fun, all our children need to do is wear something that is yellow. So whether it is their favourite yellow tie or a sneaky Big Bird costume they just happen to have tucked at the back of a wardrobe. This half-term staff have taken part in 2 staff training sessions led by the Suffolk Dyslexia Outreach
Centre which focused on what dyslexia is and the range of dyslexia strategies for the classroom. It was great to see so many parents at our information session at the end of April and we hope that the children enjoyed looking through their new book bags. In total, Brooklands has 30 new faces starting school this September. Jack Somers visited the school in April to talk about his success in Karate and representing Great Britain in the sport. We are very fortunate at Brooklands to be able to share and learn from such inspirational and motivated people. Jack showed us how trying new things can lead to a huge amount of reward and enjoyment. For our Year 6 children the transition from primary to high school is an exciting time, full of challenges and new experiences. This term will see them complete their SATs, perform in their last Brooklands production, shirt signing on their last day, as well as spending some time in their new school before they start in September.

St Michael’s Church THE PROJECT IS FINALLY COMPLETED AT ST MICHAEL’S BRANTHAM A toilet and a kitchen and no steps. What a workforce! 2 kango hammers and some ‘old men’ and the old floor was broken up – then our willing team had to shift a foot and a half of soil. After years of negotiations with the various authorities and Once the archaeologists were sure that there was nothing of interest (no kings buried or anything likely to assist Ipswich Town) work was allowed to proceed and we were able to celebrate the opening of our new facilities with a wonderful concert by the Stowmarket Salvation Army Songsters on the 7th May 2016. £60,000 raised was raised over the years.

Happy Birthday Your Majesty
to our nation and much more.
“The Queen is by any measure a remarkable woman. She’s a 90-year-old senior citizen but still works over 40 hours a week. She is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, attends church weekly, even on holiday, and prays daily but never tells anyone to go to church.”
“She has had a gruelling travel and work schedule for over 60 years, but there are no reliable recorded incidents of the Queen losing her temper, using bad language, or refusing to carry out a duty expected of her.’ “
So begins a 64 page book on the Queen titled “The servant Queen and the King she serves”. It’s a book that has given me new insights into this amazing woman and her remarkable consistency of character and extraordinary contribution
What is the Queen’s secret? The book gives many quotes from her Christmas messages and other speeches but in 2002 she said: ‘I know just how much I rely on my faith to guide me through the good times and the bad. Each day is a new beginning. I know that
the only way to live my life is to try to do what is right, to take the long view, to give of my best in all that the day brings, and to put my trust in God… I draw strength from the message of hope in the Christian gospel.’ If you would like a copy, drop me a line, or an email or a telephone call and I’ll drop a copy in next time I am in your area or come to Capel Methodist on June 12th when we will celebrate the Queens’ birthday with a special service at 6.30pm.

Poetry Corner
The Dawn Chorus Despite the inclement weather we have had The hail, the sleet, the arctic spell And of a sudden an incidental Mediterranean bout One phenomenon has been constant Regularly early each morning as the light gathers The sound of the birds has been reaching a crescendo Songs of all kinds of birds merging together In amongst them one can decipher Calls of blue tits, great tits, green finches, blackbirds and The loud and clear distinctive song of the song thrush All it would appear delighting in the new day Amongst the chirps and chatters and twitters One hears the loud and mighty rising ‘teee’ and falling ‘cher’ Teee cher, teee cher, teee cher of the Great Tit Then amongst the chorus enters the sonorous and Boisterous and repeating high-pitched whistles of the Song Thrush And from somewhere on the top of a tree The slow richly melodic song of the garden Blackbird Joins the throng of vocalisations and from the right Enters the characteristic, one could make these out anywhere The energetic disjointed sequence of notes of the Chaffinch The identifying double note (an easy give away) Chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff, chiff-chaff enters the chorus And in the distance the Woodpigeon makes its mark Starting with a flat ‘cooh’ and a rising ‘coo’ Cooh-coo, cooh-coo, cooh coo, cooh The contemplative and melodic song of the robin is easily heard And from very nearby, a fast warble and trill of the wren As if not to be forgotten makes its presence felt All of them it would seem expressing the joy of the new day Warming the heart Reminding us of the beautiful life we share our world with.

EAST BERGHOLT UNITED FOOTBALL CLUB Established in 1895
Tony Moss after a number of years at the helm has decided to step down as Chairman. He has led the club to a position of some strength at a time when many clubs are struggling, indeed a number have folded, so we are sorry that he is taking a break. Nonetheless this offers the opportunity for new people to join in the running of the club and continuing the progress that has achieved whilst Tony has been in the Chair. You can follow the progress of our teams on the SIL website, http://touchlinesil.co.uk/ Steve Butcher (Secretary) (stevebutcher55@btinternet.com) 52
