I can’t believe that as I’m writing the Oct/ Nov edition it’s still steaming hot. When it reaches 30c outside, sitting in front of a hot computer screen is not fun!
I’m almost wishing the cooler weather was here - but I’m not going to wish it away. It’s already getting darker much earlier and the leaves are starting to fall off the trees. Thank you to all that have sent in photos for the front cover. I was inundated with pictures of the poppies on the main road. Out of all of them I choose the one on the cover because of the cow parsley in the fore-
ground, I thought it a lovely contrast. If you’re a keen photographer and have some photos of around the village you would be willing to either have appear on our cover or on the facebook page, send them into editor@ branthambugle.co.uk Brantham hosted another very successful garage sale earlier in the year and raised the most ever! Have a look in the centre pages at the photos of the day, as well as the money raised being presented to the various charities.
Horrors and Brantham Box Office continues to run every month. The Over 60’s and the Women’s Institute continue with their autumn and winter programmes. If you are looking to make new friends, what better way could their be? Don’t forget that the next edition covers Dec/Jan - so get your content in early for Christmas events.

Parish Council News
PARISH COUNCIL NEWS OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2016
It’s been a pretty fabulous summer here in Brantham, and I for one have certainly been making the most of it and enjoying all of the lovely places to walk that Brantham has to offer! I have noticed the leaves starting to fall from the trees however; it’s a sure sign that autumn and all its lovely colours are only just round the corner. It has been a quiet couple of months for the Parish Council, but here are some things I thought you might want to read about:
Development at the Industrial Site
As you may already know at the Babergh District Council planning meeting on 18 May 2016 BDC Councillors voted by 9 votes to 5 to approve the Outline Planning application that had been submitted by St Francis Group. The Parish Council has not yet received an update on the planning application, however as soon as we know anything we will let 8

Network Rail Crossing Reduction Strategy
You may remember my last update in the Bugle about the proposal from Network Rail to review 31 level crossings (a mixture of private and public level crossings) in Suffolk on the Great Eastern Main Line and on the line between Ipswich and Cambridge to improve safety and thereliability of train services; and reduce operating and maintenance costs. Two crossings in Brantham are affected; Brantham High Bridge and the Sea Wall crossing by the Factory site. The next round of public consultations is currently underway and you can find out more on the project website: www. networkrail.co.uk/anglialevelcrossings which includes a questionnaire for responses.

BUGLE NEWS & LETTERS JUG MISSING FROM BRANTHAM CHURCHYARD For more than 30 years a jug has hung on a hook near the tap in the St Michael’s churchyard for use by people tending graves and this has been a great help to them. Sadly someone appears to have walked off with it. If you have taken it home by mistake, or know where it is, we would be very pleased to see it hanging on its hook again with no questions asked! Rev Steph Update: Thank you to the unknown kind person who has donated another jug. We would still like the old one returned!
Does Brantham need a Defibrillator central to the village? This is a portable device which can be used to help restart the heart when someone has a cardiac arrest. We thought it would be a good idea to help fund one and have it placed at the Co-op in Acacia Court.Unfortunately our request has been turned down by their head office. At the moment there is one placed at the Leisure Centre and a second one at the Royal Oak in East End. The Co-op used to be very supportive of this scheme but not any more. . . so where could it be located if you think it would be a good idea. Please let us have your views as we have some items left from our FINAL garage sale which would be sold to kick start the fund. Please phone Ronnie 01206 395557 or Yvonne 01206 392266

Constable Country Medical Practice Pressures on the NHS are reported on daily in the media; overspend, hospital closures, A&E waiting times etc. Your GP practice is a critical component of the NHS and increasing demand and pressure on funding affects us as well. We have finite resources so therefore need to work as efficiently as possible. As we head into autumn we know that demand will increase. We continually work to improve the efficiency the practice and you can help us by bearing in mind following guidelines: 1. If you require repeat medication, let us know well in advance and allow 3 working days before collection. 2. Nominate a pharmacy so that from November your prescriptions can be sent quickly and electronically to a pharmacy of your choice. 3. Use your pharmacist. They can offer excellent advice and provide over-the-counter medication which your GP cannot prescribe. If your pharmacist believes you need to see a GP they will tell you. 4. Use NHS Choices. The website contains
extensive help on a wide range of medical conditions and offers advice on what you can do to help yourself and when you need to seek help from a GP. 5. Tell our receptionist the nature of you problem. They may be able to resolve it without you having to come to the practice (e.g. medication issues) and they can advise on the most appropriate clinician to see (GP, Nurse Practitioner, Nurse, Pharmacist etc.). Remember that we will never turn a patient away who needs to speak to a doctor. If our on-the-day appointments are fully booked, one of our doctors will phone you back to discuss your problem and see you in person if necessary. 6. Phone later in the day if you need test results. If a result is abnormal and or action is required then you will be contacted by the practice. We don’t contact patients when no further action is required. 7. Please bear with us! Some days are very busy, especially Mondays and Fridays. If
you can’t get through on the phone then try later. You will always be able to speak to a doctor if necessary. Annual Flu Clinics Our annual flu clinics will be: East Bergholt Medical Centre, Tuesday 11th October, 2.00pm to 7.00pm Capel St Mary Surgery: Thursday 20th October, 2.00pm to 7.00pm All eligible patients will receive a letter by the end of September inviting them to attend on one of the above days. Patients may attend either clinic and no appointment is needed. Training Days Just a reminder that the practice will be closed from 1pm on the following dates for staff training: 12 Oct, 17th Nob, 14th Dec 2016

Good Neighbour Scheme
Brantham Good Neighbour Scheme What the Good Neighbours can do for you:If you need help with transport, our team of Volunteers will drive residents of Brantham (at their requests ) to their appointments for hospitals, Dentists, Opticians, Chiropodist, hairdressers, clubs etc. In addition to this we do essential trips for food shopping, however we must emphasise that we cannot do a regular weekly shop as this can cause problems with meeting the more urgent needs of Brantham residents. We also have a Coffee Morning on the last Thursday of each month with a variety of home made cakes served with tea or coffee, it’s always an enjoyable gathering of friends and neighbours and any newcomers are always welcome so come along and meet your neighbours. The scheme hired a bus last month and took twenty five neighbours out for supper at the “Shipwreck” that’s a restaurant not a boat, on the Shotley Marina. It was a fabulous evening with good food, good company and even the weather was good. Everyone mentioned it was great to go out on a summer’s evening watching everyone enjoying a supper and then walking outside on the marina taking in the views across the har-
bour to Ipswich and Parkeston. Last month the volunteers completed 128 requests for transport and odd jobs to help our Brantham residents, and hopefully we will continue this service for many years to come. We do however need to keep our band of volunteers as a healthy number so as to maintain this service and therefore we are appealing for new people to help - please call for more details. It is a worthwhile scheme and those who volunteer do feel satisfied they have contributed to a great community and we are the best good neighbour scheme in Suffolk, so we want to keep up our number one status. Have a good Autumn season.

East Bergholt Horticultural Society Founded 1895
Back at the beginning of September we had a very successful Annual Show with over 400 entries. It was a busy day with exhibitors arriving from 7.30 in the morning to stage their exhibits and judges arriving at 10 to begin judging. The Show opened to the public at 1pm and we had a steady stream of visitors all afternoon having a look round and enjoying a cup of tea and a piece of cake with Prize Giving just after 4 o’clock. Thank you to all our members who exhibited and to everyone who came along to support us and buying those all important raffle tickets! Congratulations to all our Cup Winners. Our last speaker evening of the year is on 14th Oct, 7.30pm at the Constable Hall. The talk will be by Sarah Cook, holder of the National Collection of Irises; bred by Sir Cedric Morris and exhibited at the Chelsea Flower Show. Tickets are available from the Fountain House Tea
Room in East Bergholt. The AGM of the Society will be held on Friday 11th November in the Benneworth Lounge at the Constable Hall at 7.30pm.
Gardening Tips
We are really thinking Autumn/Winter now – clocks going back at the end of the month! However, sometimes October can be a good month for getting ahead and putting our gardens “to bed”! And, of course, it’s time to think bulbs – inside and out. Protect those outside from squirrels, until foliage appears, with small mesh chicken wire, a good deterrent! Now is an ideal time to plant trees, shrubs and hedges. Plant up Winter pots, tubs and baskets – Pansies and Violas always make a cheerful display, interspersed with bulbs, perhaps Tete a Tete daffodils or other shorter varieties in the pots and tubs. Before the Winter gales check all stakes of trees, shrubs and rambling Roses. Also check
fence posts are secure. Raise mower cutters and rake lawns where necessary to remove “thatch”. Use a low nitrogen feed to toughen up grass ready for Winter. Generally, it’s not been a good year for Tomatoes – blight being a major problem. Those which haven’t ripened will make delicious chutney. Harvest all vegs. Broad Beans can be sown. Roughly dig vacant ground and let the Winter frosts do the rest! Cut back fruited canes on Raspberries leaving new green shoots for next year’s crop. Remove straw around Strawberries to increase ventilation and cut back old foliage encouraging new growth. With all its challenges, I hope you have enjoyed your gardens. Perhaps you are planning some changes for next year or just “resting on your laurels”!!

Brantham Parkinsons Sufferer Raises Over £1,300 for Parkinsons UK
Ed, Trevor and Phil pause for a rest Brantham resident Trevor Nobbs was diagnosed with Parkinson’s over 5 years ago. Despite Parkinson’s being first discovered almost 200 years ago there is no cure and so Trevor decided to try and raise some money for research. Parkinson’s UK – the support and research charity – is trying to find a cure and to improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson’s.

Some researchers believe cycling can reduce the symptoms of Parkinson’s, Trevor is putting this to the test and has just completed his third long distance cycle ride from Brantham to Cromer and back via the Broads, a distance of just under 200 miles. With the support of good friend Phil Wainwright and Trevor’s son Ed they have also completed the overnight ride The Dunwich Dynamo 120 miles and the Tour de Suffolk 210 miles.

Over 60’s
Brantham Over 60’s On 26th July, we were visited by Jane Woodley. A retired nurse, she told us of her life nursing around the world. After her training, she saved hard so that she could travel, first visiting the United States, where she carried on her nursing, until she could save enough to travel on. In this way, she travelled all over the world, including Australia and New Zealand, to mention only two. Meeting only once in August, on the 16th, a Ploughman’ s Lunch was followed by a fund raising afternoon, with a Bring and Buy stall, Cakes, and competitions at 20p a go. Pauline Hammond was thanked for doing most of the shopping and preparation for the lunch, helped by her Mum and other members, it was hugely appreciated and enjoyed by all. Meetings are on Tuesday afternoons 2.304.30, at the Brantham Leisure Centre.

OUR FUTURE IN EUROPE There is no doubt that we British are also very much Europeans. Due to the series of invasions by the Celts, Romans, Danes, Saxons and Normans followed by peaceful infiltrations from the Flemish, Huguenots and Irish, we are tied to Europe by ethnicity, language, culture and history. With these long and deep connections to the ‘mainland’ there is no escape from engagement with its future concerns. However you voted in the Brexit referendum, both sides agree that that we indeed part of the European story. The essential issue between us and the EU is about how we match our natural desire for independence and freedom to govern ourselves within the greater unity we all share. The story of that fateful vote on 23rd June has been well argued in the newspapers and other media, so all but the few who choose not to take part will be familiar with the detail. So whether we like it or not, the task 26

before us is where we go from here. Teresa May says “Brexit means Brexit”, but in the absence of any specific statement we are none the wiser what form this might take. Those who voted to stay will be hoping for a simple solution covering issues such as a re-organisation of the EU’s structure, the maintenance of trade relations and an agreement on immigration. The leavers want a clean sweep of EU regulations from the UK and a completely new set of trade agreements with each EU country. My guess is that what might appear at the end will fall someway between these two alternatives, but at this stage it would be pointless to predict where. Of course, whilst the discussions are taking place larger world-wide security, economic and social concerns may rise persuading the two parties that these issues should take precedence. In addition membership of the EU is by no means the cause of all our difficulties such as in our health, education, transport and

financial sectors. Scotland may leave the UK and new border controls set up between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Fortythree years of membership cannot be quickly undone and serious discussion on new trade relations will have to await the outcome of Brexit talks. My fear is that pressing domestic concerns will take second place to these talks with consequent deterioration of everyday life in this country. It is suggested that all we by-standers can do is sit back and watch. Not so; it is up to us to keep pressing the government on all non-Brexit domestic issues which concern us. Whatever happens we must continue to contact our MPs and local councillors on anything which interferers with our daily lives. If Brexit is really about taking back control this must also apply at the local level (such as in housing!) so we have greater say on the shape of this part of Suffolk, both now and when Brexit is all over.

A new term has begun and our children have been settling in to their new classes following their summer break. Similar to previous years, each of our classes choose their class name and this year they have chosen sea creatures as a theme. These have been rich and varied with the
children choosing: sea turtles, seals, dolphins, sea otters, starfish, narwhals and puffer fish. To accompany their class names each of their classrooms also has features and decorations linked to their sea creature. As a result, each class has a range of books about their chosen sea creature as well as soft toys. Over the last few weeks I have been getting to know our new children to the school. They have recently named themselves sea turtles. Tiddles, their soft toy sea turtle, will be having lots of
adventures over the year as our children take him home with them and capture his adventures in photographs and stories. It is with great delight that I can share our Key Stage 2 results. This is a reflection of the continued hard work by all those involved with the school. A huge congratulations to all those who worked so hard to achieve some amazing SATs results. As you will see from the table below these results show just how well our children are achieving.

Brantham Scout & Guide Group A WET weekend in suffolk
Brantham Scouts and Guides took part in the annual Suffolk County Scout and Guide Wet Weekend in July on the river Deben at Ramsholt. This event provides activities for in excess of 160 young people with approximately 40 Leaders and Instructors overseeing the whole weekend. The Scouts and Guides from Brantham were joined on their sub-camp by Cattawade Explorers and Samford Valley Scouts. The activities included open canoes, kayaks, dinghies, yachts and raft building. As in previous years the young people enjoyed all the activities as can be seen from the photographs in this article. The weather was kinder this year after the thunderstorms at the 2015 event.

We take this opportunity to thank all the parents who helped set up the camps on the Friday evening and striking camp on Sunday afternoon and transporting equipment in both directions, without their help this could not have taken place. The Scout Troop ended the Summer term with a camp in the Who's who grounds of the hut and every Scout who attended was given RAINBOWS the opportunity to complete the remainder of their badge work & GUIDES carried out during the Spring term.

St Michael’s Church Three times a year I am duty chaplain at the cathedral in Bury St Edmunds. This gives me the chance to dress up in my Canon’s cassock with its red buttons and cincture (red cummerband) in which I feel, and probably look, like Humpty Dumpty. The duty chaplain is there to listen, chat to people and pray with them if they wish for this ministry. If I am there on a Wednesday, I officiate at the weekly lunchtime communion as well. It is always a pleasure and a privilege to be there. There is currently a Lego model of the cathedral being built as a fundraiser, they expect it will take 3 years and require 300,000 bricks. The figure of the Dean is already standing in the chancel holding a chalice that remarkably resembles a football trophy. Once completed the tower will stand four feet high. During the day there was a constant stream of young families coming to play Lego. Having Coco with me is always an easy conversation starter. One woman approached saying, “Please may I have a 34

Rambling Rector stroke?” and when I patted her shoulder she laughed (fortunately!) During the afternoon a courteous black Labrador came in with his owner on a lead and began the tour of the cathedral just as the acting Director of Music began organ practice for Evensong. An unearthly wailing filled the air. As the choir were not yet present we had to look elsewhere for the source. After ten minutes of this, the noise ceased and I suppose the owner had beat a rapid retreat through another exit, or maybe the two purposeful vergers had something to do with it. Coco mercifully did not join in, though she quivered from head to foot. It would

make my life impossible if she decided to become the Rector’s Singing Dog. There was one man who said, “This is a beautiful building, but I am sorry I am not religious.” We replied he would be very welcome to come again. Lots of people feel the same, they can appreciate the surroundings but not the meaning. Some of course feel like the Labrador and want to howl at anything church. Whichever category you fall into, you are very welcome to come again. God can be found unexpectedly.

I heard an expression on the radio yesterday that “Busy is the New Happy!.” Googling the phrase, I found an article written 2 years ago (by Aashima Singh) with that title arguing for the truth of the phrase. I could see her point, it makes us feel important and necessary and it even makes relaxation time more rewarding. Rob Bell said “Busy is a drug that a lot of people are addicted to.” For me busy is five churches, activities, messy church, bible studies, coffee mornings, youth, prayer meetings, parish nursing, outreach, community involvement, Sunday worship, visiting, funerals, baptisms, weddings, several colleagues, hundreds
of volunteers and well over 1000 people with whom we are in direct contact. I love my job but I need to be aware of busy-ness crowding out the important. In August I slowed down to 3mph on a canal boat, there was more time to reflect, the amazing beauty of the countryside, cheek by jowl with industry, reflecting on where life is going, time for family, time with God. I know I am not a good example of getting my priorities on the use of my time right. A church leader once said the busier I am, the more time I need in prayer, I know that for me it is sometimes the other way around, prayer times
can be cut the busier I am. Everyone’s priorities will be different; the work / life balance will be different. I believe one thing we all need is to stop frenetic activity, to be still and know that God is with us. A few moments each day will bring peace into our lives and give direction, fulfilment and happiness in our busy-ness.

MEETING EACH MONTH ON THE SECOND WEDNESDAY AT 7.30PM AT THE VILLAGE HALL - ALL ARE WELCOME Well summer is just about over but we have enjoyed some beautiful weather for our garden parties. Jean’s Strawberry Tea was enjoyed by all and also Marion’s Garden Party at Capel St Mary, both blessed with beautiful sunshine. At our July meeting Pat won “The Best Lemon Drizzle cake” which was enjoyed by all, with a cup of tea and voted the tastiest. Our talk was on Flower Arranging which was made to look so easy. Three beautiful arrangements that were all different
were donated to the raffle, which were very much appreciated by the winners. After such an interesting demonstration, some members were inspired to try their hand at flower arranging . The August meeting was a talk on Household Waste, again an interesting talk which prompted a lot of questions. Some details - there are only seven world-wide recycling centres for batteries, clear glass can be recycled indefinitely and coloured glass is used in road building.
Should you wish to join us please ring Diana Blanchard on 07881 713672 for further details. Transport can be provided On-line - www.sefwi. org.uk - then click on WIs - Brantham We listened to many more details as to what happens to our waste. Future events Oct Wood Carving. Poetry Corner
The Bee Orchid Although not so large Your perennial presence is stored Intimately in the mind A rosette of lanceolate fresh green leaves With parallel veins a give-away in spring But in the summer is when You show your majestic self A loose inflorescence with Four or five eye-catching flowers A close look reveals your intricacies Your mechanisms of attracting pollinators With oozing pheromones for good measure Moulded by nature’s hand What first draws the eye is Your large deep red-brown recurved oval lip With pronounced hairy side lobes And distinctive yellow markings One hanging like a necklace Aiming to entice a passing bee Your pink sepals provide a scenic backdrop While the column with its pollinia ready stand To stick to the head of the itinerant visitor The sticky surfaces of the stigma Leading to the ovary below are hardly visible And to prevent self-fertilisation In-between the pollinia and the stigma Is a barrier – the rostellum Your structural ingenuity knows no bounds 48
