CHRONICLES - ALESSANDRO LONGATO My name is Alessandro Longato and I was born on July 16, 1974 in Borgosesia-Italy. Photography has always fascinated me. It is my way of capturing a detail, an instant, an emotion. I remember spending as I was a child whole afternoons looking at old photographs taken by my father ‌black and white or color, in the most varied formats. Images which told the story of my family and mine own. I really believe that my burning love for photography was born at that time. I dare say that in my decades-long photographic reporting I sort of wrote an illustrated journal of my life. On my travels, I have passionately tried to memorize exciting moments, landscapes and visages. ALESSANDRO LONGATO

CHRONICLES - GERT VAN DEN BOSCH I am Gert van den Bosch, born in 1964. Married, dad of four children. In 2009 I picked up the camera again. I started out in photography 1981 when I bought my first SRL camera. I even owned my own dark room, but I was not good at all in taking pictures. I only had a small knowlegde about handling a camera. In that time it was an expensive hobby. When the children came I was not taking pictures anymore. As I said, up until 2009 when I got a camera in my hands again from a friend. I knew how the camera worked and bought one 6 weeks after it. At first I was intrested in landscapes, but soon I discovered that I do like landscapes, but I like something in it. Like a cow for example. I started to visit farms. I get in touch with farmers and smallholders by social media. Livestock photography is what I like very much, in fact all that has to do with farming, also the farrier, the sheep shearer, the Vet, and the even Abattoir is interesting. I want to know how farming works from the beginning to the end. I have met many farmers. At some point, a farmer asked me to picture him and his boar walking in the woods. That was the start from the series : The farmer and his(or/and her) pride. Why that caption? After meeting dozens of Farmers not only in my country, but also in UK, Germany, Italy, Belgium, it was very clear that the animals are not only a way to earn a living, but it also their pride and joy. In a lot of occasions it happens that a farmer has a favourite animal. I try to show the affection and also the commitment to the trade. It is not a nine to five job.

CHRONICLES - GERT VAN DEN BOSCH How does it work? After I have met the farmer and their family, and I know the location, we are working out a scene. A kind of storyboard. First thing we do is a walk around for the best spot, or we work out something by e mail. I suggest a few things and look how the farmer responds. Sometimes they have their own idea and we work that out. Second is making an inventarisation from what we need and what is present on the farm. In most occasions we will find what we need on the attic. What do I have, what type of lamps do we need? What are all persons present in the picture doing? It has to like that they are not posing, but do this like every day. It has to look serious, but with some humour added. Very important where do we put the animals? At first we build the scene, and when it is almost ready; some farmers want to change clothes, others don't. We put the animals in place (when needed) and mostly the one who is assisting me looks if everything is ok. No overlaps in persons, are the faces clearly visible and so on. It has to be a quick operation, because animals loose their attention in no time. They even start to demolish the furniture. I have about 100 metres of extension cable for lighting the lamps, once I borrowed a power generator, because we were in the middle of nowhere.
Most people in one picture was ten so far. On a goat dairy farm More people is more difficult. They all have to do something. Like drinking coffee, reading, playing cards, and so on. More people also means, more chance one has the eyes closed, or mouth open...more attention is needed to make a decent picture. I don't use photoshop for adding things. It is all in one shot. In post processing I only add contrast, and more clarity if needed. The camera I use is a Sony A7RII and it depends a bit how much space I have around, but I try to use my 55 mm F1.8 lens or sometimes my 35mm F1.4.

Only in two thousand and nine I start shooting regurally. Up till then, my work at the Portuguese Labour Administration and my Human Resources and Sociollogy teaching classes, at University wouldn’t give me the liberty to walk around the Portuguese streets. Enthusiastic about, namely, Henri Carter-Bresson, Sebastião Salgado and my college and friend Rui Palha’s photos, I bought my first camera, a Sony @230 and i started walking around Lisbon’s streets, trying to give sense to my photos. At the same time, I tried to fulfil another one of my dreams – writing. In two thousand fourteen, I published a book of tales: “E dos Fracos Rezam as Histórias” (“Tales About the Weak”), in two thousand eighteen, a romance “À Procura do Homem Perfeito” (“Looking For The Perfect Man”) and in two thousand and twenty, in memory of Patxi Andion, who died in two thousand nineteen, the book “Gorka Rúbio, o Louco Que Queria Agarrar a Morte” (“Gorka Rúbio, The Mad Man Who Wanted to Catch Death”). Quickly I understand that my education in Sociology and my life experiences were giving direction to my photographic options. Reality was a social construction and I could set it up. In time, I choose a humanistic photography, all my photos have people and value structures in people’s lives.

Almost all of my photos people are framed by physical architectural structures, symbolically searching to mark the relevance of different structures, physical, social, cultural, etc., in people living in society. I didn’t have any education in photographic techniques; the street and the great photos, from great photographers, have been my teachers. I have had two exhibitions, which I called “Interactions”: one at Colorfoto, in Lisbon and another at Associação Cultural Calafrio (Cultural Association Chill) in Guarda. I developed the project “Alone”, trying to understand the impact of cell phone use, and created several presentation videos for my photos. I also published a photo book called “Routes”. Only recently, for several reasons, I start to publish my photos in photo groups. My assessment is quite good: on one hand, I noticed the awesome diversity of the photographic approaches, on the other hand the relation between different contexts and photographic production. Finally, there is also the joy of recognition, often by great authors, great references for humanist and street photography. As you can see, by the set of photos I present, my objectives often centre on darkness, in the attempt to give it shape, to give it sense. Darkness is, nowadays, my mystery, the world I want to lighten up. Norberto Rodrigues
