With so many shifts in the economy, local and national, you are probably one of thousands in the Houston area that are looking for jobs or want to advance your career. There are many avenues you can take to find what you are looking for, but a job fair or hiring event offers you the opportunity to meet face to face with recruiters, rather than through a sterile resume or online application. Having this direct personal interaction can mean starting a job sooner, and gives you a chance to apply with multiple companies in one fell swoop. There is a difference between a job fair and a hiring event. Either gives you the personal interaction with hiring managers, but the number of opportunities available will vary. An event with the title “Job Fair” implies that it is hosted by a neutral coordinator and has multiple companies participating. A Job fair is a great way to get your resume into the hands of many hiring companies, rather than an exclusive hiring event. Individual companies will also host hiring events, and these will be exclusive to the company hosting them. These businesses will have multiple positions to fill, so you will be able to target different opportunities with one hiring specialist.
Photos: P. Flores
In either case, being well prepared will be a great benefit to you and add to your confidence. When you first learn about a job fair or hiring event that you want to attend, take a few minutes to learn as much as you can about the companies that will be attending. Most job fair hosts will have a website with a list of employers that will be there, and looking through the website of any company that is advertising an event will help you know how to approach the hiring manager on site. Some information you will want to research includes: Where is the company located? How would that Vol. 20impact Issue 1000 your commute?
20
August 7 - August 14, 2015
What does the company do? Do they currently have positions listed online that you qualify for? What requirements they have for their positions? Are there specific education, experience, certification and licensing needs? Having this knowledge will help you to ask the right questions of your interviewer. In addition to research, you will also need to prepare yourself. Start with a brief overview of your qualifications, and what you will be able to bring to the company that you are interviewing with. This makes for the best introduction. Also have open-ended questions ready for the recruiters, focusing on the company and their purpose. Avoid questions that focus too much on yourself. You are there to become a benefit and great addition to the company you want to work for, not the reverse.
How to
WORK a Job Fair By C. Wardle
You will also need to print multiple resumes to bring. If you know which positions you want to apply for at the job fair, you can customize your resumes and cover letter to highlight your skills that are appropriate to the job description. Be sure to also bring generic resumes with you, as some companies are last-minute additions to the job fair list and you will not have the chance to do much research on them before attending. When you enter a job fair, your appearance is the first impression that an employer has of you. Dress professionally, even for a job that will not require professional clothing. Check your clothing before the day of the hiring event and look for any stains, tears, frayed edges or hems that are

SKILLED & TRADES tained in your resume. On the day of the job fair, leave your family at home. Bringing children to a hiring event is a big distraction not only to you, but to the people who are trying to interview you. If you know about the job fair well ahead of time, make arrangements for childcare so you can focus on the event. Use your time wisely and be polite. Talk to the other jobseekers as you stand in line to meet with an interviewer, and use this opportunity to network and make associations with other people in your job field. Make sure to take any brochures, flyers and information that a company offers. You can use your time in line to read and learn more about the companies you are meeting with. Get a business card, and write notes on the back regarding the position, the company, and the person you met with. You can use this information later when you send a thank you note to the interviewer.

Try to stay calm and collected, use appropriate language and give a firm handshake as you meet the recruiters. After the job fair, you will have a lot of information to look over. Take a few moments and write thank you letters to the people you interviewed with. This will let them know you are still interested in the poisiton, and you can also highlight your abilities that meet the employer’s needs. Send another copy of your resume and cover letter to the employer. The companies at hiring events receive hundreds of resumes, and sending another copy will help them find your information easily if they want to arrange another interview. Keep the company information you received at the job fair organized. You will be able to find everything you need easily as new information comes available, or if you are preparing for another interview. At JobSparx, we attend and advertise hundreds of job fairs and hiring events every year. Be sure to check our calendar online to see what events are coming up in the Houston area. Our main goal is to bring Houston employers and Houstonians together in a great employer partnership.

Vol. 20 Issue 1000 August 7 - August 14, 2015
The resume is one of the most critical documents job seekers need in their toolkit, but how do you create a resume when you have no work experience? After all, the purpose of the resume is to showcase your past experience to employers and convince them that you would be a good fit for their organizations. If you are a recent high school or college graduate with little work experience, building a basic resume can be a real challenge. One solution to this common resume dilemma is to focus on your years of training and education instead of your lack of experience. You have spent many long years, and probably a lot of money as well, working toward your degree and getting good grades. You should be proud of that accomplishment, and it should play a starring role on your resume.
Focus on Academic Accomplishments You can use that first resume to showcase your accomplishments during your academic career, from the times you made the Dean’s List to the time you spend helping
out in the computer lab or mentoring other students. Even if those roles did not pay you a salary, they can demonstrate your work ethic and your commitment to getting the job done. Even if your formal career experience is somewhat lacking, chances are you have done a lot of work in your life. Your resume is the perfect place to highlight that experience, even if it consists of volunteer positions, freelance gigs and temporary assignments. All of those roles demonstrate that you have a solid work ethic - something a would-be employer will be happy to see.
The Importance of Formatting Even if you highlight all your academic accomplishments and include all your volunteer and freelance gigs, your first resume will probably be pretty sparse. That is why it is so important to choose the right format. Proper resume formatting is important no matter how much Continued on p. 56

experience you have, but it is even more critical when you have little or no work experience. You can start by using a standard resume format, like the ones found in Microsoft Word and similar word processing programs. You can personalize the resume format a bit, but avoid using fancy fonts and other distracting flourishes. Centering the resume on the paper can make it look more professional while minimizing the sparseness of the document. Use plain white paper and crisp black print to make the resume stand out. Use the highest quality paper you can afford, but avoid heavy card stock and other non-standard choices.
5/26/15 11:47 AM
Proofread Carefully The last step should be to print out a hard copy of your resume and read it carefully for spelling errors, poor word choices and other common mistakes. Do not rely on online reading; actually printing the document and reading it is a great way to spot errors you may otherwise have missed. It is a good idea to have a friend or family member read the resume as well. Another set of eyes may spot problems you have not noticed. You want the document to be absolutely perfect before you send it out, especially when the work experience section is a bit light.

ASK DIANA Q: I am going to my first job fair this week, and I feel a little nervous. One of my friends is going with me, and she told me to wear comfortable clothes and get all of the cards that I can while I’m there. She says it won’t take very much time because we are just going to do a “run through.” I was explaining our plans to my sister, and she said that I need to wear a suit and take lots of resumes. Which one of them is right?
Q: I desperately need a job. I worked for a law firm for more than 15 years, and it shut down 6 months ago. I am really not familiar with interviewing for a job because I didn’t even have a resume when I got my last job. I don’t think anyone had resumes back then! I just heard about it from a friend, she recommended me, and I got the job!! I am a little panicked about the whole process.
about a month ago, but I needed money right away and started working for a different company. I forgot to call the first company to cancel, but I remembered later in the day and left a voicemail apology. Now my current company wants to transfer me to another state when I finish training, and I don’t want to do that. When I called the first company back for an interview time, the sales manager said that they were not interested. I need a job. What can I do to convince them?
-The Woodlands, Texas Reader -Houston, Texas Reader
-Clear Lake, Texas Reader
A: Your sister is right. I don’t know what your definition of “comfortable” is, but you are going to a job fair to get a job. Right? First impressions still count, and you won’t get interviews or callbacks if you don’t care enough to dress correctly. Going to a job fair is going to be an investment in time, too. If you just “run through,” you won’t be able to look at each job and decide if it is a good match for your skills and experience. You may decide that it would be better to ditch your friend and go to the job fair on your own.
A: You are allowing your lack of experience to dominate your thoughts and make you nervous. Right now your job is getting a job. You need to look at interviewing as if it is a job. Spend the time, do the research, contact the companies, and you’ll get interviews. It’s going to take practice and work to feel more comfortable. Avoiding the job search while waiting for someone else to find you a job just isn’t a practical plan. Make sure that your resume reflects your experience and highlights your skills. Resumes have been part of the hiring process forever. You just happened to land a job without one back in the day.
A: Nothing. Even if you had called, you would not be considered again. You had both opportunities, and you made a choice. It would be crazy to train you while realizing that you would jump at the next quick buck opportunity that came along. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.
PS: I’m perfectly comfortable in a business suit when I go to a job fair! Q: I was scheduled to interview with a company

your future. Don’t express your anger at your boss or the company. They may be in the wrong, but you have a lot more to lose than they do. Be especially cautious to not say anything on social media. (If you did, delete it). Deal with your anger by complaining to a trusted friend. You can also find a great deal of support online and in chat groups. Work on maintaining a positive mental attitude. Exercise! Start every day with a brisk one hour walk. Buy a couple of positive motivational tapes to listen to while you walk or exercise. These tips will help improve your disposition.
ANALYZE YOUR CAREER OPTIONS.
Do some serious self-assessment and marketplace review. What you want, and the reality of what’s available might not be the same. Consider what has happened to your industry. If the industry is in a major decline, jobs will be harder to find. Maybe it is time to consider a new career. Make a list of all the job skills you possess. Review your interests. You can come through a layoff experience looking at a brighter future if you follow these guidelines
Losing your job is extremely challenging which is what Ken discovered when this 53 year old project manager got laid off. He had not looked for a job in over 10 years. He became a career counseling client and told me he felt lost. He had no network to speak of and belonged to no professional or civic organizations. He tried a few colleagues and his old boss but no one had any job openings. and then take those courses to update your skills. Computer courses, communication, leadership classes are always helpful. Obtaining a specialized certificate in a field such as credit, payroll, healthcare, human resources or project management can lead to a new job. Volunteer work that keeps you active in your field is very appealing to employers too.
DON’T WASTE YOUR CONTACTS.
Do not approach people until you are ready. A common mistake is to frantically call EVERYONE you’ve ever met and say “I’m looking for a job - do you know of one?” Huge error! You must be able to articulate the specific job title you want to work for. 63% of people hired in the last year found their job through contacts AND 80% of all job openings go unadvertised. Start a list noting former bosses, coworkers, colleagues, friends, neighbors, family - anyone you can think of.Develop a list of 4-5 specific questions you can ask that will help lead to hiring managers, such as: Do you know anyone working in XYZ Company? OR Do you know anyone in the (name specific) department at XYZ Company? Always ask for referrals of someone else you should talk too to expand your networking list.
TARGET YOUR RESUME. Is your re-
sume updated with accomplishments and recent results you’ve achieved on the job? This is essential to get an interview. Target your resume to fit a specific job. Be concise using relevant information that outlines experience related to the job title you are applying for. General, long resumes are a BIG mistake. Showing your past actions and the results you achieved in your past positions is what employers want to see. Define and quantity if you saved time or money, added to the bottomline, or made productivity improvements.
KNOW WHAT TO SAY. Be able to offer
a concise intro about your skills and experience. Use a technique I call the 60 Second Sell. Link your top 5 selling points together in a few sentences on how you can effectively perform that job. Use this as a verbal business card to open and close your interview. To improve before a face-to-face meeting, write out answers to potential interview questions and role-play them with a friend.

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”
