Vol. 20 Issue 1009 October 9 - October 16, 2015

AUSTIN – The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC), in partnership with 28 local workforce development boards and the Texas Veterans Commission, will host statewide veterans hiring fairs on Thursday, Nov. 12. TWC’s fourth annual Hiring Red, White & You! Statewide Hiring Fair is a joint initiative supported by the Office of the Governor, the Texas Medical Center and the Texas Veterans Commission to connect veterans and their spouses in Texas with employers who are seeking veterans’ exceptional skills.

hiring event represents the importance of Texas employers working together to help our veterans who have served our nation as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”

“Fewer things are more important than honoring our veterans,” said Governor Abbott. “One of the best ways we can do this is by working with prospective employers to provide employment opportunities for our heroes. I applaud the Texas Workforce Commission for their commitment to our veterans and I look forward to continuing my work with them to provide economic opportunity for all of Texas’ former military members.”

“Many highly-qualified service members are returning to civilian life every day,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “I encourage all veterans looking for employment to seek out the Hiring Red, White & You! hiring fair taking place in their area. This is a great way to network with employers who have job openings to be filled.”

The multi-city event is designed to assist veterans, service members and their spouses as they seek their next career opportunity. Employers participate at no cost and are encouraged to contact their local Workforce Solutions office for more information. Over the past three years, Hiring Red, White & You! has connected more than 31,000 veterans with more than 4,700 employers. “Our veterans are highly-trained individuals who have the technical and professional skills employers need to boost their company’s performance,” said TWC Chairman Andres Alcantar. “The Hiring Red, White & You! statewide hiring fairs provide a great opportunity for Texas employers to recruit these highly skilled veterans.” The Texas Veterans Commission is preparing veterans for these hiring fairs by assisting them with applications and résumés, interviewing techniques, as well as one-on-one counseling services. “Through the training our military receive, veterans have acquired important skills that employers are seeking,” said Texas Veterans Commission Executive Director Thomas Palladino. “This

The national unemployment rate in 2014 for all veterans is 5.3 percent1. In contrast, for those veterans who served in the military since September 2001, the unemployment rate is higher at 7.2 percent2. There are 1.6 million3 total veterans throughout Texas, which is the 2nd highest state population of veterans in the country.

Employers who hire veterans may be eligible for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which allows employers to receive up to $9,600 on federal business income or payroll tax benefits when they hire from certain qualified groups of veterans. “Veterans are talented and dedicated workers, and businesses that employ them will benefit from their skills.” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “Military service brings great value to the workplace. Veterans bring experience, skills and leadership abilities that strengthen the Texas workforce and help employers succeed.” Information on how employers and job seekers can participate in Hiring Red, White & You! Hiring Fairs may be found at www.texasworkforce. org/hrwy. Please note that some job fair locations may have changed since last year. You’re a what? ...phlebotemist by Matthew Mariani

Y

ou’re in Washington, DC, & you become ill. You go to a doctor, who orders some tests. Then you seek the services of a phlebotomist, a medical technician who draws blood for analysis. Waiting in the ambulatory care center at Howard University Hospital, you worry about just how big a needle the phlebotomy technician will stick in your arm. You begin to fidget in your chair. Gregory Harris enters the waiting area & calls your name. He smiles when you acknowledge him & leads you to a small curtained area. “Have a seat,” he says. You sit down. Your hands feel clammy. You look around but don’t see any needles. Stacked on a small table are several vials used for collecting blood. The small glass vials have brightly colored stoppers. “Why all the different colors?” you ask, drumming

50

your fingers on the armrest of your chair. “They’ve got different additives that mix with the blood sample, depending on the type of test you need,” he says. “What’s your favorite color?” You don’t answer because you’re not listening. You watch him put on a pair of rubber gloves. You’re thinking the needle will hurt. “So, how long have you been doing this job?” you ask, trying to sound casual. “Thirteen years,” he says with a smile. “I supervise 7 other phlebotomy technicians—I’m the elder statesman around here. I’ve been drawing blood since I was 17.” “Huh,” you say. “Nowadays, you’ve got to be 18,” he says as he wraps a rubber tourniquet around the upper part of your arm, tying it snug. “I learned mostly on the job.” “Is that how most phlebotomy technicians learn?” “Yeah. Most folks get some classroom training and some supervised practice on the job,” he says, examining your extended arm. “Four different associations certify phlebotomy technicians, & they’re

all a little different as far as how much training & experience they require. I’m certified through the National Phlebotomy Association & the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.” He taps two of his fingers on the soft, inside part of your elbow. “You don’t have to go to college to do this?” you ask. “No. Most phlebotomy techs have a high school education,” he says & begins gathering several small objects. “I graduated from high school at 16 because I skipped the 9th grade,” he adds, “but I’ve got a bachelor’s degree in medical technology from Howard University. I started going to college part time after I was already working as a tech.” While talking, Harris has collected a few items: some vials, an adhesive bandage, a bit of cotton, an individually wrapped alcohol swab, & a plastic sleeve with a capped needle protruding from one end. “I guess you have to understand all about veins & stuff,” you say. “Yeah. Mainly you have to know about the circulatory system &

some basic anatomy,” he says. He tears open the foil-lined packet containing the swab & rubs it on a small portion of your arm. The alcohol feels cool as it evaporates. Then you hear two voices, & you look toward the floor-to-ceiling curtain to your left. It’s another phlebotomy technician & patient talking on the other side.

“So, is this going to hurt?” Harris laughs. “You tell me,” he says. You look down, and your jaw drops. The needle is already in your arm. He has inserted a vial into the plastic sleeve, and the vial is filling with dark red blood. “I thought you were still feeling around for a vein!” “Hey, I’ve been doing this for a while,” he says. “Wow. So, you like your job, huh?” “Sure. I like dealing with all the patients,” he says. “I also train the other techs and coordinate our continuing education, which you need to stay certified. I arrange

presentations for the staff.” “What about?” “New techniques and research,” he says. “And safety is a big issue.” “What do you mean, ‘safety’?” Holding the plastic sleeve of the needle with one hand, he gently removes the now full vial of blood and sets it down. He picks up a new vial and eases it into the sleeve. Blood begins flowing into the second vial. “We have to pay attention and be careful,” he says. “Accidentally sticking ourselves with a needle we’ve used on a patient can transmit blood-born viruses like hepatitis or HIV, which causes AIDS.” “Oh, right. I see.” He reaches for the rubber tourniquet with his free hand and removes it. The second vial finishes filling. He removes the vial, sets it down, and picks up a small piece of sterile cotton. He places it over the needle entry site, slips the needle out of your arm, and immediately presses down on the cotton. “Press down on this—it prevents bleeding,” he says. “See how I dispose of the needle in this medical waste container without recapping it?Standard safety practice.” You nod, and he reaches for the adhesive bandage to secure the

cotton. “So, you want to be a phlebotomy technician?” he asks. “How does it pay?” “Good question,” he says. “Average pay was $9 an hour in 1998— that’s what I saw in a survey done through the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. Actually, phlebotomists are the lowest paid of all medical technicians, because we need less training.” “Are there a lot of jobs, at least?” “You know, I was asking someone from the Bureau of Labor Statistics about that the other day,” he says. “He said there were about 2.4 million health technologists and technicians in the whole country in 1998, but only a tiny percentage of those were phle-botomy technicians.” You get up from your chair. Harris checks the vials containing your two blood samples to make sure they are correctly labeled. He removes his gloves and disposes them. “You’re all set,” he says. “I’ll take these to the lab, and you should have test results tomorrow.” “Well, thanks a lot, Mr. Harris,” you say. “I didn’t think getting blood drawn could be so painless. I appreciate it.” He grins. “All in a day’s work,” he says.

Easy Conversation Starters

for Networking Events By: Marc DeBoer

Have you ever heard of KISS? It stands for “keep it simple, stupid.” My great-grandmother

3. Bring a Networking Wingman

I understand networking can be nerve-wracking and “no fun” at times, but it’s because we’re overthinking it.

While networking with a friend is a great way to meet more people, you need to make sure that your friend doesn’t overpower you. Don’t let them steal the spotlight, because no one will remember you and you’ll defeat the original purpose of going to this networking event in the first place. Have your friend there to make the initial introduction and get the conversation flowing. Once you’re in a good spot, your wingman should back out and let you do your thing.

consistently reminded me of this saying when I was young. She always told me I overthought everything — and networking is no different.

Here are a few tips you can try out at the next networking event you’re going to that will make things much easier:

1. Keep Your Intro Simple

Simply introduce yourself, ask the other person’s name and ask what brings them to that particular event. Sometimes, we think we have to have some sort of catchy opening line to speak to people. More times than not, the best introduction is the simplest of them all. Once you’ve asked them their name and found out why they’re there, try out tip #2. Tip: Don’t forget the name of the person you just met. Dale Carnegie said the sweetest sound to anyone is hearing their own name. Be sure to remember this and, as you’re leaving, thank the person by their first name.

2. Find Something in Common

At the very least, you already have one thing common: whatever the purpose is of the networking event you’re at. Find out what attracted them to this particular event and explain to them your reasoning. Once you’re beyond that, don’t be afraid to ask the person about their professional and personal hobbies and find something that correlates with yours. If, by some chance, you can’t find anything interesting or anything that correlates, then you can say, “I apologize, but I’m not familiar with X. Can you tell me more about it?” Show interest in their interests. Sometimes the best form of networking is flattery. (Just don’t take it over the top.)

54

Vol. 20 Issue 1009 October 9 - October 16, 2015

Doing anything with someone else always makes it easier. Bring a friend with you to make introductions easier. You can even have them use the Barney Stinson method of introduction, “Hi, have you met Ted?”

4. Arrive Early

By being with the first few people there, you’ll be able to have easy “small talks.” As more people arrive, you can continue to introduce yourself, but you can always fall back to the first people you met. Another advantage of arriving early is that people won’t have already formed conversation groups. This is a great way to meet multiple people quickly and easily and not have all the attention on you. In addition, if you’re really nervous, arriving early also gives you the chance to scope out the facilities — i.e. find where the bathroom is, find the room where the presentation will be, etc.

5. Find a Group of 3

A group of three people means that two other people have allowed someone to come into their conversation. Don’t barge in on the group, but get close to the group and see if someone will invite you into the conversation. This gives you the ability to quickly meet three people, but also take a back seat in the conversation. Don’t be a mute, but simply offer conversation when you can.

Bonus Tip

Do some research, find the attendee list and

email people prior to the event. You can say something along the lines of, “I just wanted to introduce myself prior to next week’s event. I’m very excited to hear [person] speak about [the topic]. See you then!” Doing this will give you the advantage of having someone expecting you to introduce yourself. This will help the conversation flow much easier for you. Next time you’re at a networking event for any reason, try out these conversation starters. The secret is to simply have confidence — confidence in yourself, your skills and your experience. Now, go out there and meet some new people! About Marc DeBoer Marc DeBoer is the founder of A Better Interview LLC, online at www.abetterinterview.com. ASK DIANA Q: I am not an extrovert, but I can get along with most people. My extrovert friends can instantly respond to questions, but I usually have to stop and think before I answer. I don’t want to seem hesitant, but I just can’t do a rapid fire response. When I’m interviewing, I always get stuck when they ask if I have any questions. I just say that I don’t because they have done such a good job of explaining. On the way home, I keep thinking of what should have asked. What can I do to make it easier?

- Houston, Texas Reader A: You start telling her to do it on her own. She sounds extremely nervous and worried about doing her job. The problem is that you are trying to do your job, too, and you can’t be responsible for training someone when you are brand new! Instead of just giving her information, ask her first what she thinks. Let her explain to you what she believes she should do, and you’ll help her gain confidence in herself. If she simply isn’t catching on to her duties, it may be that she isn’t a good match for the job. If that’s true, she’ll be miserable trying to do something she doesn’t enjoy.

Q: My husband was contacted by another company and offered a job. He stayed with his current company because we will be relying on the insurance when our baby is born. He is starting to really hate the job. He gets to the office by about 6 am, but he often doesn’t get out of there until after 6 pm! His boss texts and calls him on the weekend – even during a party! Of course, he’s exempt and doesn’t get overtime. He has also been helping with another store while they are short-handed, and he hasn’t gotten any extra compensation for that. His boss is a terrible manager, and talking with him wouldn’t do anything. Do you think he should talk with the regional manager or just look for another job?

-Spring, Texas Reader A: Once you have the baby, your husband needs to call the original recruiter and tell him that he is now ready to make that move. It wouldn’t do much good to talk with the regional manager, because that’s not where the problem is. If he doesn’t like his manager, he needs to get out. When you realize that he is working 12 hours a day with people he doesn’t like and respect, it’s a no-brainer. Getting in touch with the recruiter will open

a number of doors even if the other position is already filled. Congrats on the baby! Q: I work in retail sales and love the job. I’m very good at handling customers to make them happy. I just treat them the way that I want to be treated. I would like to move up into management, but we already have a new manager who is almost as young as I am! How can I improve my chances with the company?

-Houston, Texas Reader A: You are using the Golden Rule for customer service, and I’ll bet the customers love you. Since you like the company, your manager can be the perfect mentor for you. She can tell you about her career and how she managed to get promoted. If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana. I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not ever y question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 day s.

Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Forcing Little brother to grow up

pray for him, and ask God to bring people into his life who will have a positive impact.

Dear Dave,

You never know what might happen, and asking Him for help is never a bad idea. Who knows? He might even start dating some strong, mature young woman who’ll jerk a knot in his tail and straighten him up!

I’m having issues with my youngest brother, and I need some advice. He’s 25, divorced and has two kids. He only wants to play dad when it’s convenient for him, and he’s very irresponsible with money as well. Our parents passed away a few years ago, so this leaves me to be the big brother and dad at the same time. I worry about him, but I’m not sure how to help him grow up. Any advice? Jeremy

One of the bad things about these situations is watching people you love do stupid things to themselves and the people around them. And I don’t know that there’s really a lot you can do without becoming the enemy to some degree. You can always try to hold him to a higher standard and refuse to tolerate immature, irresponsible behavior when you’re around him. You might even look for opportunities to use yourself as an example. Point out areas in your life where you made mistakes in the past and how you fixed the problems. But to go out and directly intervene in his life, trying to force him to be a man, would be a tough thing to pull off. When I help people on my show, I have the benefit of them calling in and actually looking to me for help. These people actually care about what I think. I don’t just walk up to folks and say, “You know, what you’re doing there is really stupid. Let me fix you.” I think that’s kind of the situation you’re in right now. I would also begin to

Late Fees Dear Dave, Our family has an account at a movie rental store. I rented a movie the other day, and forgot to take it back on time. The late fees add up to $20. I’m in college and have a part-time job, so my parents think I should pay the late fees. They started the account, so shouldn’t they have to pay the fees? Angie

Dear Angie, Technically, I’m sure your parents are responsible for the account. But think about this. You’re the one who rented the movie and forgot to take it back on time. If you have a job and access to money, I think you should be the one to make things right. Chalk this one up as a learning experience, Angie. If you’re grown up enough to be in college and have a job, then you’re grown up enough to start cleaning up your own messes. That’s the way life works. It doesn’t mean that your parents don’t love you. In fact, it means that they love you enough to teach you a valuable lesson in responsibility! —Dave

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

HR DIRECTORS REVEAL THE BIGGEST RESUME MISTAKE PEOPLE MAKE By Robin Ryan, Bestselling Author of Over 40 & You’re Hired

I was a speaker at the Society of Human Resource Management’s annual conference a few weeks ago & got into a interesting discussion with a large group of HR directors. I asked, “What is the biggest resume writing error that job hunters make?” And I expected the typical answers – lying, typos, spelling errors – but no this group of hiring pros came back with something that would surprise most people. They almost all said, the person applying for the job they are not qualified to do.

figure out something was wrong,” one manager offered. Roberta, another director quickly piped in saying “I think the online system has made it so much worse. People can copy a resume online into an electronic system & just hit send. They can hit that a dozen or twenty times & apply for everything and anything. At large companies like ours, we get over TWO MILLION resumes a year. Our IT people check monthly & they found dozens of people had applied for every single job we had available at the company. I have them removed from the system & we blocked them from applying in our system in the future.”

Kathryn, a Midwest HR manager began the discussion. She said, “Job hunters apply for a job they clearly aren’t qualified for & why? So many people – young & old alike – professionals & WHAT TO DO managers too, seem to think that the HR department’s job is to READ every • Apply for good fit jobs only: resume that comes in & should figure out where that individual would fit Do some research & uncover the jobs inside our company. Obviously they you actual are qualified for. Use the can’t do the accounting job we are better websites such as Indeed.com, advertising for. Someone needs to LinkedIn & any special niche sites that clue them in that it’s really their job contain career listings for the jobs to determine where they fit & then you seek. Read about the skills the tell them to only bother & apply for employers are asking for. This will the jobs that they are qualified for.” help you update your resume & address what currently “We get thousands of applications matters to employers. from people applying for the wrong jobs they can’t do” said Thomas another HR •Target Your Resume: Manager. “It’s ludicrous how this whole situation has gotten out of hand.” The The HR managers all other HR managers all kept agreeing. stated that they hire for a specific job so be “You would think with people doing sure you outline online applications & never getting exactly how you called in for any interviews they’d

can perform that position. Results sell! Use specific facts noting demonstrated skills, & past accomplishments achieved. The formula for success is using actions=results bullets that command attention. Be sure to include figures on how large, how many, what you did, & how it turned out. Stress actions that resulted in an increase in revenues, & any cost or time savings. • Write a customized cover letter: Employers I talk to say that a well written cover letter is very influential and can snag an interview by itself. It’s clearly a big mistake not to write a targeted letter. Be sure you address the specific needs of the employer. Opening your letter with a couple sentences that advertise your top skills & accomplishments is the secret ingredient to getting your letter read. Then highlight exactly how you can perform the job and show definitive actions & outcomes.
