Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY

Getting Back On The Wagon

when it comes to the future, Misty. Think ahead, plan ahead, and jump back on the wagon!

Dear Dave,

—Dave

I started working your plan earlier this year. I even budgeted for Christmas and got my shopping done early, but in the process I overspent and blew my whole monthly budget. Now I’m having a hard time getting motivated again. Do you have any suggestions?

Confirmation of payoff?

Misty Dear Misty, Lots of folks make mistakes like this, even though they went into things with the best intentions. The Bible says that no discipline seems pleasant at the time, but it yields a har vest of righteousness.

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

The best way I know to encourage you to get back on the wagon is to ask one simple question: Where do you want to be in five or 10 years? Is your current path going to reward you with a financially secure life? Is it going to give you the ability to retire with dignity and to have fun living and giving in your golden years, or is it going to leave you broke, scared and desperate? There’s one simple answer if the path you’re on isn’t going to get you what you want and where you want to be in life: Change the path! Most people don’t even take the time to identify where they want to go in life or how to get there. They just shuffle along, blame others and circumstances for their situations, and think someone will take care of them. That’s called being a child. Children do what feels good at the moment, but adults devise a plan and stick to it. Lazy is always easier, and more fun, in the short term. But it’s a huge mistake

20 Issue 1018 26 Vol. December 11 - December 18, 2015

Dear Dave, Do you view personal debt and business debt the same way? I have about $210,000 in farm loans that are mostly tied up in land I rent to farmers. It’s the only debt I have, and the rental prices supply me an income of about $200,000 a year.

Anne Dear Anne, Your debt required you to personally sign for it, right? So, it’s all personal debt. The law is going to treat you exactly the same if you don’t pay a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan as the law treats you with an unsecured personal line of credit. You’re still going to get your butt sued, and they’re still going to come take your stuff or garnish your wages. It’s debt! The only way it’s personal debt versus business debt is in your mind. If I’m in your shoes, I’m going to live on as little as I can and pay this off like I was tr ying to pay off a house. If I made $200,000 a year on investments, and ever ything was paid for except one of my investments, how quickly would I pay that one investment off? Two years. In your situation, surely you can live on $100,000 a year!

—Dave

A DEGREE TO BEAT THE

Economic Blues In today’s uncertain economy, job skills

& education are more important than ever. Although it might seem like an uphill battle, there are viable options for people who are looking to better themselves & their families. How can you get ahead when the economy is looking so anemic?

Consider earning an Associate’s Degree. It takes half the time and half the expense of a four-year degree & the rate of return on the investment are well worth the effort

What is an Associate’s Degree? Completion of a two-year course of business study at a community, junior or business college level will earn an A s s o c i a t e ’s D e g r e e . A n A s s o c i a t e ’s Degree is considered a “transfer” degree, meaning it can count toward the first two years of study for a Bachelor’s degree, which can take another one to four more years of courses to complete, or can be an end product itself. This type of degree is regarded as an “entry-level” degree that prepares students for business from the ground up. A student can then elect to take their degree right to the work world, or continue on to earn their Bachelor’s. As an “entry level” degree, an Associate’s Degree opens up opportunities & will get your foot in the door of many different career choices.

y a d i l o H r u Fo g n i t n u H b Jo s p i Ti T s s e c c Su

by Robin Ryan

I just got an email from Kathy who was unhappy with

her current job & wanted help to move on. She wrote to ask, “Robin I went to my association meeting yesterday & several people there warned me that hiring has a big slowdown from Thanksgiving through New Year’s. Is that true? Should I just wait until January to start job hunting?” Great question. Typically you will see significant differences after Turkey Day. The first reality check is don’t expect to start a new job in December. Although it can happen, companies prefer to interview you, put the offer out and make the hire date in January because they don’t want to pay for the holidays on new employees. Many companies do put the brakes on hiring until January. There still are a lot of activities you can do. Through December, I am writing a series of weekly articles to help you get through the holidays to maximize your job search success. Holiday time is the perfect opportunity to network. Meeting new people & making improved connections helps your job search immensely, so you must put yourself out there. Attitude is Imperative: It must be super positive & you must act like you are the best potential employee anyone can hire. After all YOU ARE! Be on your game with everyone you meet. You never know where the next job lead will come from. Attend Events: Think parties, holiday functions, something at a friend’s house. Take advantage of association, community, organization events, & company parties. Go with only 20 Issue 1018 38 Vol. December 11 - December 18, 2015

one intention in mind – meeting just a few new people. You don’t need to say you are job hunting. In fact it’s best to just talk about fun things. Spend some time with them and learn about where they work. Get there full name & write it down if t h e y don’t have a business card. Definitely connect with them on LinkedIn right after you meet with a personalized note. In early January send a suggestion of getting together & offer a date or two. Seek Out Commonality: Discovering an outside interest is the magic to making an instant friend. At social events try mentioning a pro sports team or bringing up a local community event. A great question to ask is “what do you do outside of work?” Look for a connection – such as a hobby, hometown, college link, children the same age. You might start with a comment about something you enjoy, like hiking, boating, cooking, music or working out, anything that can lead to more opportunity to create an interest between the two of you. Keep in mind a mutual interest is what develops relationships. Many job promotions & new positions have been secured walking around playing a game of golf. Good Conversation E tiquette: Take the initiative to introduce yourself to someone else. If you are shy, ask the host or another friend to make an introduction & include something about each of you that you have in common to get the conversation going. Learn a person’s first name, shake hands & make eye contact during the conversation. Have a sentence or two prepared that describes you in a concise but friendly way. Most of all, listen attentively to others, & be genuinely interested and repeat the person’s name during the conversation. Suggest you connect soon in the future & share contact info. © Copyright Robin Ryan, 2015, All Rights Reserved

5 WAYS TO CUT YOUR

by Rachel Cruze

Holiday Spending It’s the Christmas season—my favorite time of year! And even though Christmas is the season of giving, it can also be a time when it’s really tempting to overspend. To keep from falling into that trap, you need to have a plan. So here are few ways to keep your spending in check this Christmas.

1.

MAKE A BUDGET. The budget is your plan. You must decide how much you’re going to spend over the holidays and even how much you want to spend on each person. Without the budget, it’s so easy to spend $10 here and $20 there. Then, before you know it, you’ve spent $100 without even buying something for your spouse! If you need a little push making your first budget, check out EveryDollar.com—the best online budgeting tool available!

2.

USE CASH. When you swipe a card, you spend more because you feel it less. Think about using an envelope system for your holiday spending. Put the amount of cash you need for gifts in the envelope. When the money’s gone, your gift buying is done!

3. GO EASY ON THE SALES. I get it. I love a good sale

just as much as anyone, but I don’t want you buying something at a discount just because you got a good deal on it. Use those sales to your advantage, but don’t let Christmas sales turn into a reason to justify overspending and going into debt.

4. REMEMBER TO GIVE. Go beyond the usual giving opportunities, and get out of your comfort zone a little. Take some time this year to reach out to those in need and provide them with hope. Whether you do that with money or time is up to you. Giving is one of the most important things you can do with money.

5.

RELAX! REMEMBER, IT’S ALL JUST STUFF! If you don’t get the television or the purse, it’s okay. Life will go on! Don’t get so caught up in the holiday madness that you forget about why you’re shopping and giving gifts in the first place. I want you to have an amazing holiday season. You’ll be more equipped to do that when you’re not overspending and going into debt. So follow these tips and make this holiday season merrier than ever! Rachel Cruze is a seasoned communicator and presenter, helping Americans learn the proper ways to handle money and stay out of debt. She co-authored the #1 New York Times best-selling book Smart Money Smart Kids with her dad, Dave Ramsey. INTERVIEW WITH A ...

KEITH GOLDNER

WHAT DO YOU DO? I create mathematical models to evaluate players and teams from lots of different sports so I can project performance.. The job starts with collecting data. I build programs that automatically find and extract publicly available data from official and fan sites. Sometimes I use a paid data service that records, organizes, and cleans the livegame data for me. This makes it easier to compare the data. If I put bad data into the model, I’d get bad predictions. Next, I use a lot of statistical models to analyze the data and simulate how different changes in the game might affect a team’s chances of success. Then I optimize the model to get better results. For example, I might tell the model to build an optimal roster around a specific player. Last, I build online tools to empower average users and businesses to play around with the data. They might, for example, rank players’ performance or project the outcome of different team matchups.

HOW DID YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR JOB? My background is in statistics and probability. A lot of analysts have a graduate degree in statistics. In college, I majored in math and took some stats courses. But the course that has helped me most was on probability theory. I alsoVol.learned do computer programming, which is not 20 Issue to 1018

52 December 11 - December 18, 2015

essential, but I highly recommend it. I didn’t know any when I started out, but it has been extremely helpful in making sense of the data.

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED? I’ve always liked sports and math but never thought about combining them. In a book, I found a footnote about a guy who showed mathematically that, in football, passing was better than running the ball. But all the professional teams were going against that advice. I found and emailed the guy from the footnote, asking for advice. Fortunately, he had just started working for a pro team, and he gave me some projects to work on while I was still in college. Most of it was menial, but that got my foot in the door.

TALK ABOUT HOW YOU TOOK INITIATIVE TO HELP MOVE YOUR CAREER FORWARD. I knew that if I could create an opportunity for myself, I could prove my value. Whenever I attended a conference, I’d make a list of people I wanted to meet and offered to help with any extra work. That way, when a new job opened up, they’d think of me. I contacted people to see if they

needed help, even if the work was unpaid. The money didn’t matter, I was just excited to be part of the team. Then someone passed my name to a pro team that was starting a new analytics department, and I started there while still in school.

SO NETWORKING PLAYED A PART? Networking is important. This is a competitive industry, and most people are willing to work for cheap. And sports teams tend to hire internally, asking their employees if they know someone first.

WHAT OTHER SKILLS HAVE HELPED YOU? The ability to communicate information effectively is the most important skill when dealing with anyone outside this field. You have to explain complex mathematical concepts and why they’re important, sometimes face to face and other times through blog posts or articles.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT THE WORK? I’m a huge sports fan and love watching sports for a living. I get to work in something I love, and my work can help a team win. Sometimes, I’ll act as a consultant to a team, helping to come up with best plays, analyze player performance, and assess the dollar value of a player. With that information, the team can make decisions and may improve its chances of winning. I also like problem solving. You’re building tools that help teams perform better and win more often. Solving those problems is a cool feeling, and I find it exciting to be a part of a team’s decisionmaking process.

ANY SURPRISES ALONG THE WAY? When working with big data, the hard part is not necessarily learning the right technical skills but knowing which questions to ask. There’s so much data that it’s essential you know what you’re looking for. You also face resistance from the sports community. Many sports teams, especially in football, still don’t understand the benefits of analytics. Some people think that because you didn’t play professionally, you don’tunderstand the game. page It canContinued make youon feel like54 you’ve done all this work & no one cares.

GENERAL

WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE? This field is still selfmade, selftaught. There are many books and blogs dedicated to the statistical analysis of every sport. And you can use independent study or unpaid opportunities to gain experience and show that you’re interested. Make an effort to contact the teams and people you’d like to work with. You don’t have to wait for a team to call. The best way to find work is to put yourself out there.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

You’re A What?

PROJECT coordinator N

ikki Letendre enjoys organizing details so projects stay on track. “From a young age, I’ve enjoyed puzzles,” says Nikki Letendre. “I’m all about making sense of the chaos.” As the project coordinator for an architecture firm in Hoboken, New Jersey, Nikki is still managing chaos. She keeps track of documents and other details to complete design projects, fitting them together much as she would the pieces of a puzzle. “I do whatever it takes to organize projects and people so everyone can work more efficiently,” says Nikki. “It’s like arranging the puzzle pieces into something that makes sense in the end.” Project coordinators work in diverse industries, including construction, fishing, and telecommunications. Working under the direction of a project manager, project coordinators do administrative tasks—such as compiling paperwork and setting up meetings—to take a project from start to finish. Some, like Nikki, expand their role to help not just with individual projects but also to provide broader support for the entire business.

What They Do Project coordinators’ duties vary, depending on the needs of their employer. Their main focus is to organize the numerous parts of a project and make sure it runs smoothly. “When we have a contract in place, and there’s a clear sense of the scope of the work, then I start getting involved and organizing the people, the project, and the budget,” says Nikki.

Organizing Every project has lots of details to Vol. 20 Issue 1018arrange. Project coordinators usually

62 December 11 - December 18, 2015

work directly with other team members and the client—a representative from the organization that hires the firm for its services—to plan meetings and organize logistics. They set up schedules and timelines to monitor progress and help make sure the project meets its goals. Project coordinators track dates, budgets, and other information using spreadsheets. They also sort reports, contracts, invoices, and financial files for quick access. For example, Nikki’s job requires her to compile architectural documents and drawings for formal submission and filing. “Submissions involve thousands of pages of documents and full-size drawings,” she says. “There’s nothing more satisfying to me than consolidating all of those documents and drawings and turning them into an organized and successful submission.”

Communicating Nikki and other project coordinators need to communicate with others, including the project team and client. They must be able to convey a project’s particulars, which range from daily minutiae to long-term goals, in order to keep it on schedule. And when problems arise, they may need to troubleshoot and clearly articulate proposed solutions to all parties. Project coordinators also help with presentations and reports to allow other team members to concentrate on their area of expertise. “I try to take anything off the architects’ plates that I can, especially when it comes to documents, so they have the time and freedom to do the knowledge-based part of their job,” says Nikki.

Other Duties Other responsibilities for project coordinators may include budgeting, monitoring expenses, and projecting cash flow.

These workers also ensure that projects meet quality standards. And they do administrative tasks such as billing, bookkeeping, and ordering office supplies.

How To Become One Project coordinators often share common qualities and skills that help them to succeed in their work. Education, certification, and work experience also may be required or preferred by prospective employers.

Qualities & Skills Strong organizational and communication skills are important requirements for project coordinators. In addition, they must be self-motivated, conscientious, and adaptable because their employer trusts them to handle many details of the business. Basic math or accounting skills are helpful for doing financial tasks. Office and clerical skills, including proficiency in word-processing and spreadsheet software, are essential for completing administrative duties. And employers may require other expertise specific to the business. For example, in the firm where Nikki works, architects value her suggestions on aesthetic elements because she has a background in visual arts and design.

Education & Certification Project coordinators typically need at least a high school diploma to enter the occupation. However, employers in some industries may require job candidates to have a bachelor’s degree or technical certification in a particular discipline, such as in software design for applicants seeking project coordinator jobs in information technology. Other certification specifically for project coordinators is available through professional associations. Although this certification is optional, it may help candidates stand out from other applicants.

Experience Many employers prefer to hire prospective project coordinators who have several years of experience in the industry in which they wish to work. The experience need not be in project coordination to be relevant. Some project coordinators might start out doing clerical tasks and gain experience as they take on additional responsibilities. Nikki originally worked in an administrative position, for

example, but she began handling bigger assignments—and eventually became a project coordinator. “My position evolved from opportunity,” she says. “My employer gave me the opportunity to expand my job duties to fit my skill set and to redefine what my role is in the firm.”

What To Expect Project coordinators usually work in offices, but occasional travel to visit clients or jobsites may be required. And, like most jobs, there are good and bad aspects to this work. Employment and wages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not collect data on project coordinators. Instead, BLS counts these workers among business operations specialists, all other. In May 2014, there were about 934,400 of these wage and salary workers employed, according to BLS. They had a median annual wage of $67,280, higher than the $35,540 median wage for all workers.

Likes & Dislikes Project coordinators find it satisfying to concentrate on the individual parts of a project and build toward the whole. And they like the variety of tasks and projects that they work on. For example, Nikki enjoys dealing directly with clients and working behind the scenes, and she likes that no two architecture projects are the same. But the emphasis on meeting milestones and deadlines is demanding. “Everybody needed something yesterday,” says Nikki, “which can be especially stressful with new clients.” That stress usually diminishes when clients get to know her, she says, and learn that she follows through. “I may not have the answer,” she says, “but I’ll find out and get back to them.” The trust Nikki builds with clients is, in large part, a reflection of the trust placed in her by the architects she works with. And that makes her job even more rewarding. “They encourage me, and that makes me want to do a good job because they’re so passionate about what they do,” she says. “I love that I’m part of what makes a project successful.” Kathleen Green is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS.
