Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Hold On For Now Dear Dave, My husband was laid off a month ago from a job making $80,000 a year. We have no debt except our house payment. We o w e a b o u t $ 8 2 , 0 0 0 o n i t , b u t i t ’s valued at approximately $300,000. We’ve also got an emergency fund of $30,000, and I work part-time making about $2,000 a month while he collects unemployment and looks for another job. Do you think we should sell our home? We’ve also got a b o a t t h a t ’s w o r t h a b o u t $ 1 8 , 0 0 0 w e could sell.
Refund Or Better Planning? Dear Dave, Do you recommend having people keep their W2 numbers as close to their tax return numbers as possible, even if they might have to pay at the end of the year or have more taken out? Ever y year I get a big tax return. But after listening to you I began to think that if I did a better job of planning I would have more money throughout the year. -Charlie
-Sheila Dear Charlie, Dear Sheila, The first thing I want you to do is take a step back and breathe. Yes, you guys just hit a big bump in the road. But the good news is you’re in pretty good shape financially to handle things for a while.
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. Vol. 21 Issue 1024 January 29 - February 5, 2016
At this point, I’d strongly recommend selling the boat over selling the house. Boats are a lot easier to replace than nice homes, and the process isn’t nearly as traumatic on the family. You can also dip into your emergency fund a little bit, but for the next little while you need to make sure you’re living on a really tight, bare bones budget. I’d love to see you not have to touch the emergency fund, because he’s gone out and found at least a part-time position while he’s searching for something in his field. I know that’s tough to do once you’ve gotten used to making $80,000, but there are jobs out there that will help you guys get through this.
I like your thinking, and you’re absolutely right. That’s exactly what I recommend people do when it comes to their income taxes. Of course, you don’t want to have to pay out a big chunk of cash. But a little number crunching and planning ahead of time can help you avoid those kinds of situations. You really don’t want a big refund, and here’s why. If you get a fat tax refund every year, all it means is you’ve loaned money to the government interest-free for the entire year. Then, at the end of the year the y ga ve it back to you. Some people seem to think Santa Claus has shown up when this happens, and that’s completely w r o n g . Yo u ’ v e h a d t o o m u c h t a k e n o u t of your check every payday during the previous year, and then you got it back.
Tr y to adjust your W2 so that you are hitting within $100 or so at the end of the year. Then you’ll have more of y o u r o w n money in your own pocket throughout As long as he’s being diligent in seeking t h e e n t i r e y e a r ! a new job, and you’re budgeting and watching what you spend together, I think — D a v e for now you should keep the house. God bless you both! — Dave

of noise, other types of tiles can absorb as much as 95%. So-called ‘soft walls’ also absorb echoes. Space planning is another important part of effective workspaces, particularly if the FM is able to demarcate areas such as meeting rooms.
SECURITY
We are enrolling men and women in our job search program, at NO COST to you. At The WorkFaith Connection you will learn how to get hired regardless of your work history or background.
A FM may be cognisant of all the aforementioned priorities, but if he or she overlooks building security, then all their efforts will be for nothing. Most FMs know they can’t afford to ignore security, even if the area in which the building is situated is regarded as safe from crime. One element of security is man-guarding -- ensuring there are security personnel to monitor access into and out of the building. Fortunately, FMs today have plenty of technological assistance in the form of CCTV cameras and sophisticated access control barrier systems. CCTV cameras can operate independently of local power systems and produce far sharper images than they could in the past. There are additional benefits to CCTV, such as the ability to link back to automated fire-alarms, and as evidencerecorders when a company is forced to disprove

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

ASK DIANA Am I biased? I think I almost lost m y job last week because of something I said, and I still don’t understand it. One of the young girls at our office can’t seem to remember how to get her paperwork done even though I’ve told her a dozen times. I commented to my supervisor that she was too young to understand how we do things. I wasn’t prepared f or the blast m y boss ga ve me! She said tha t I am biased against younger employees, and I need to get m y a c t t o g e t h e r. S h e a l m o s t threatened me that I have to get in line. I wasn’t being rude, a n d I w a s n ’ t a c t i n g s u p e r i o r. I’ve been at this company for 15 years, and new people take a while to do a good job. I’m 61 years old, and I sure don’t want to lose m y job. I know tha t it’s hard f or an older worker to get hired because of ageism. How can I correct m y beha vior (tha t I didn’t know needed correcting?) -Houston, Texas Reader A : I t ’s e a s y t o c o r r e c t : D o n ’ t smear anyone for their age whether they are young or o l d e r. Yo u u n d e r s t a n d w h e n i t ’s aimed at older workers, but you fail to realize that criticizing someone for being young isn’t nice. No one likes to be judged for something beyond her/his control. The woman (not girl) in question should be evaluated on her own merits without insulting her about her age. I’ll bet you’ve been saying things like this for awhile, or your supervisor wouldn’t have been so upset. No one likes someone who insults others. I’m re-writing my resume… M y r e s u m e i s r e a l l y old because I haven’t needed it for awhile. I’m thinking about looking for another job a n d n e e d t o g e t i t i n o r d e r. Is there any new information about resume writing that I should know? - H o u s t o n , Te x a s R e a d e r A : I love this question! Some things are still the same, but there are a lot of changes. Good luck. Who pays for lunch?I ha ve a coworker who asks me to go to lunch with her, but she always goes to the restroom when the bill arrives. I end up paying. I want her to know that I’m not stupid. -Clear Lake, Texas Reader A : Well, that’s pretty shameless! Ask the waitress for separate checks and tell your “friend” that you have paid the last three times! If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, just email Ask Diana.
