October 21, 2015 -- In an effort to help veterans find lasting jobs, the City of Houston Office of Veterans Affairs will host its inaugural Military Veterans Career Fair on November 6, 2015. This event will take place from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Moody Park Community Center located at 3725 Fulton St. Houston, Texas, 77090. This first Military Veterans Career Fair will feature jobs currently available within various City of Houston departments. There are openings for 911/311 call takers, administrative workers, equipment operators, financial analysts, engineers, mechanics, nurses, project managers, project technicians and safety supervisors. “Our military service men and women have given a great deal to our country,” said Mayor Parker. “Unfortunately, when they return home, they often have a difficult time finding the gainful employment they need to support their families. The City has many jobs that are a perfect fit for the experience and skills gained in the military. New Business Park, New Companies Highlight Katy Area EDC GA Meeting KATY (October 23) - It’s not often that an economic development organization has the opportunity to welcome three new companies to a new business park. On Tuesday October 20, that’s exactly what happened at the Katy Area EDC General Assembly meeting held at the Katy ISD Education Service Complex. Roughly 100 members and guests attended the meeting which included a presentation by keynote presenter Capital Real Estate Commercial (CREC) and the introduction of three new businesses recruited to the Katy area, Advantec, Master Valve USA and Novomet. CREC, a Katy Area EDC member, previewed Grand Parkway Industrial (GPI) Park, a 70 acre deed restricted industrial park which is located off Grand Parkway and Clay Road. The park currently has several tenants, but is actively leasing land two acres and up for build-to-suit projects. CREC noted its partnership with the Katy Area EDC has been “integral in site selection assistance and the marketing of the new park.” CREC also discussed an additional project, Grand Parkway Plaza, which is located just south of 529 on Grand Parkway. The mixed-use development will feature retail, office and warehouse space. Vol. 20 Issue 1012 KeyOctober players in the initial success of GPI 30 - November 6, 2015 are Advantec, Master Valve USA and No-

vomet, all of which are locating operations to GPI. Norwegian based Advantec provides control systems and related products, and services to international oil and gas markets. The company operates in numerous markets worldwide and will be relocating all of its Houston based employees into 20,000 sq. ft. at GPI in January 2016. Master Valve USA, which has already located in its new 20,000 sq. ft. building at GPI, is a growing manufacturer of on/off shutdown valve products and is active in various facets of the energy industry. The company is headquartered in China. Both companies expressed plans to continue to grow in the Katy area and bring new jobs to the community. Novomet will also occupy 20,000 sq. ft. at GPI. A Russian based company, Novomet is an R&D, manufacturing and service company specializing in electrical submersible pump technologies for the oil industry. Katy Area EDC President/CEO Lance LaCour noted the Katy Area EDC provided technical and proposal assistance to CREC during the recruitment phase of Advantec, Master Valve USA and Novomet. The organization continues to provide assistance to the companies to assist in the transition to the Katy area. LaCour stated, “Although we are experi-
encing the oil slump, energy projects continue to be part of the economic development landscape in the form of consolidations, new start-ups and other opportunities. Companies like Advantec, Master Valve USA and Novomet add to the growing list of high-tech companies choosing to locate in the Katy area.” New members introduced at the meeting included Strategic Partner TeleFlex Networks and Associate members Curry & Company Consultants, The Hive Katy and Times Square Entertainment. 5 Bold Ways to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for the Job Hunt Let’s face it: in the modern era, simply having an online presence is no longer sufficient in catching the eye of prospective employers. In many fields, employers now will have hundreds of applications for a single position, many of which will be nearly identical. This means you likely have only a few brief moments to catch the eye of a prospective employer, particularly on websites such as LinkedIn. But with a little bit of creativity and bold, creative thinking, you can rise to the top of the heap in your online job hunt.
1. LEARN TO SELL YOURSELF Think of your LinkedIn profile as an advertisement for yourself. This is not the place for you to be humble or unnoticeable! Your LinkedIn profile should have, at the bare minimum, a profile picture and description of your previous positions. But in order to optimize your LinkedIn presence, your profile picture needs to reflect your best self. It should ideally be a close-up, high-quality and friendly-looking headshot of you in professional garb. In a pinch, a cropped, flattering photo of yourself in your best will do - but consider taking a headshot specifically for professional purposes in order to maximise your presence. You may also try techniques such as making it black and white or slightly elevating the photo’s contrast for added noticeability. Many LinkedIn users also ignore the highly valuable ‘Introduction’ area of their profile, often because they are not sure of what to say. Your introduction, however, is vital. It should consist of 2-4 sentences in the third person describing your field, your accomplishments, and your goals. Think of this as your 30-second pitch on yourself. It should be brief, snappy and informative, and leave the reader curious for more. This should apply to all LinkedIn users, whether at CEO or entry level.
2. HAVE A FULLY FLESHED-OUT PROFILE If a prospective employer or colleague has actively sought out your LinkedIn profile, they are clearly trying to get an idea of what sort of experience and skills you might have. Nothing will circumvent their interest more quickly than an incomplete or bare profile. Regardless of whether you have no experience or decades of it, every aspect of your LinkedIn profile should be as complete as possible - as long as it is relevant to your intended field. Include your known languages (even if only basic), your technological capabilities, and your volunteer work - anything that might make you a more attractive candidate, big or small. Descriptions of your accomplishments should also be as complete and professionally-worded as on your resume. That means nothing in the first person, no verbose or flowery phrasing, and just a few concise, results-based sentences on your duties and accomplishments. In short: a brief glance at your profile should reveal a wealth of intriguing information to a time-strapped recruiter or employer.
3. FOCUS ON RECOMMENDATIONS, NOT ENDORSEMENTS While much and its users have recently focused heavily on skill Vol. 20of IssueLinkedIn 1012 endorsements, ideal6,profile October 30your - November 2015 should be complete with both endorsements and recommendations from your colleagues. The recommendations feature

is a lesser-known, but more effective method of highlighting your abilities. Once you have connected with your former bosses and colleagues, you can easily request a recommendation from them on LinkedIn through their ‘Manage your Recommendations’ page. This will allow them to write a short description of your contribution and skills, which will then display beneath your endorsements and allow prospective employers easy access to first hand accounts of your skills.
4. BE PROACTIVE ABOUT CONNECTIONS Many LinkedIn users have few or no connections beyond those who have actively sought out and requested them. Don’t be shy! LinkedIn should be the one place where you can shamelessly connect yourself with every professional (and personal!) contact you have encountered. While it may seem trivial, it only takes a few moments to look up a current or former employer and connect with all of your colleagues, or to look up all those with whom you work on a day-to-day basis. While you’re at it, don’t forget to connect with your entire network. Include your friends, family, fellow volunteers, classmates, and more (as long as you have actually worked with one another in some capacity). No matter how small, each connection opens you up to an endless number of secondary and tertiary connections that may get your foot in the door farther down the road.
5. DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE A RISK As the world of online networking and job searching are relatively new, much of the etiquette surrounding online networking can seem unclear. Many LinkedIn users thus prefer to err on the side of safety, only connecting with wellknown colleagues and friends. But in a job market where getting noticed is half the battle, don’t be afraid to take a few selective and well-considered risks in your job hunt. If you have one specific company or organization in mind as a prospective employer, you may consider trying one slightly audacious technique: while in the job application process, try searching the organization to which you are applying on LinkedIn and seeing if you have any second or third-degree connections among employees already working there. If so, then send them a LinkedIn message (or Google their name and organisation to find their email address) including who you are and what your professional goals are, and politely request if you may ask them a few questions about their field and position. If they seem receptive and you are able to initiate conversation, you can then connect. Ideally, you may be able to create a small network of contacts within your field and prospective employer. While you should absolutely not directly solicit them for help with your application or for a job unless they offer, you may create a valuable connection that could eventually aid in your search. With a little bit of creativity, effort and bold action, you can turn your LinkedIn profile into a valuable tool in your job hunt. In a world where standing out from the crowd can prove near impossible, having a unique and aggressive online approach to your job hunt will set you out from the pack and may just win you the job.

NETWORKING
DEAD? Most people today devoted 99% of their time to being in front of the computer assuming that this is the most effective way to land a job. Typically if you already have a job you don’t have much free time, so you search for job openings online, post your resumes and send off applications waiting for the magical calls to come from employers. If you ask these same job hunters are they actively spending time networking, most say, “I told people I’m looking and I have put up a LinkedIn profile” up and they consider that networking. In reality, to them networking is a dead activity. Most people hate to take advantage of others or ask for favors so they make excuses to themselves and never proactively network. By doing so, they often miss out on some of the best job opportunities available. They forget one key fact. By properly networking, your connection is actually helping the employer too. It’s a dual win for BOTH sides when you get hired and thus fill the employer’s need. Ed, an aerospace engineer, had no network to speak of and belonged to no professional or civic organizations. When the layoff hit Boeing after many years of employment there, he had a difficult time. He told me, “I guess I really was remiss about developing a network. It didn’t seem important. I wish I’d done it, because now I don’t know how to start.” Hey Carl, how’s the new job?
He tried a few colleagues, neighbors and friends which went nowhere. I suggested he contact his college’s alumni office to see if they had an alumni network in place that might help him. They did. I told him to search for companies he wanted to work for. Then to find alum connections at those companies. That’s how he began to network. A few alums offered to pass on his resume, which led him to getting a terrific new job with Raytheon. Rachel, on the other hand, was a “Networking Queen.” An executive director for a large association, she generously helped everyone who knocked on her door. She also made professional friends as well as contacts. Twice she’s been approached by colleagues asking her to apply for a position, when she wasn’t even looking for a new job. Both times, she landed the job. Rachel’s ongoing networking kept her visible – she was someone people thought of when they needed to hire a person in her capacity. This is the ideal way networking can work when you are as fully visible as she was. Proactive networking helps advance your career in numerous ways.

Make an extra effort when you attend conferences or workshops to develop some new professional friends. Go to lunch or coffee and nurture these relationships. Through email or a quick phone call you can develop a friendship that benefits both of you. Helping others will in turn help you. Your name will get known and you will become more visible throughout your field. You may need to limit the time you spend, but answering some questions and giving advice will make you popular and known. When it becomes time to job hunt, you will have a nice big group of people to call on for help. You can ask them to introduce you to hiring managers and to their HR folks or to forward on your resumes on to decision makers.

Getting to know other people who may hold the same job title as you allows you to share information, ideas and problem-solve together.
