I have worked at a pharmacy for 5 years, and I need to find a diﬀerent job. I want to get out of retail. This used to be a really great place to work, and the whole staff pulled together to get things done. We were like a big family. Since we have changed managers, it is terrible. I am the shift supervisor, and that means that I end up working shifts for all of the people who don’t bother to come to work when they are scheduled. I’ve pulled 2 double shifts in the last week. No one seems to have a work ethic, and my manager just makes excuses. I’m also worried about all of the robberies that we’ve had. Drug addicts are always trying to get the drugs and money. It’s becoming way too dangerous on this side of town. I would even take a pay cut just to feel less stress and safer. You don’t really have a question, and I totally agree with you. If you look at this without any emotion, you would say that you need to stay at your job where you have seniority and are making good money. But that isn’t the way you can look at anything that places this much stress and unhappiness on you. Your health and well-being are worth more than money, and they are sure worth more than this job. Don’t let your nerves about searching for a new job get in the way of getting out of that place!! I have worked at this major retailer for 3 years, and I am about fed up. They are piling so much work on each of us that there is no way to get everything done in one shift. They also have been telling us that we have to stay later and later every night. Just to make it even more unbearable, my manager doesn’t even know my name! She has been here three months and has not bothered to take the time to figure out who I am. I’m just sick of this. I’ve always loved my job, but this isn’t the way it used to be. They aren’t hiring enough people, and the ones who have been here for a

long time are leaving every day. Do you think it would help to explain all of this to my manager? -Houston, Texas Reader I don’t think it would help change things, but it might help you feel better. That retailer has had a whole lot of change in the last couple of years, and they are probably trying to save money by failing to hire enough people to get the job done. That isn’t smart, and it will end up costing them more money in the long run, but your manager is just a little cog in a big wheel. However, she should know your name for goodness sakes. You actually have an easy name to remember. The next time you interact with her, you should just say to her, “I’ll bet it’s hard to keep everyone’s names straight when you are new here.” She should say, “Oh, yes, it is.” Then you say, “Well, my name is Sandy, and the easy way to remember it is that there was a famous hurricane named the same.” Of course, we know that your name isn’t Sandy, but you get the picture, right? Oh, and you should be looking for a promotion or a diﬀerent job. I just interviewed for a job and was

hired. Now my problem is that I don’t have good clothes for this kind of job. I have not been working for awhile, and I mostly have jeans and flip flops. Can I ask the manager if it will be alright to wear my normal clothes until I get a couple of paychecks? -Tomball, Texas Reader Absolutely not. You can borrow clothes, buy them at Salvation Army or Goodwill, or you can try to accessorize the clothes you have. I think it’s something you should consider if you have a net worth of $500,000 or greater. But ﬁrst you should be clear on what net worth really means. Net worth is what you own minus what you owe. So the fact that you make a million dollars a year is not the determining factor in whether or not you’re a millionaire. The only people who use that definition are the financially uninformed and politicians who twist things around and throw out catch phrases designed to further their own agendas.

Debt snowball and rental property Dear Dave, Should rental property debt be included in the debt snowball? Matthew Dear Matthew, No, it should not. The debt snowball is Baby Step 2 in my plan, where you stop saving and pay off all debt except for your home—and I would include rental properties in there—from smallest to largest. Prior to this, you should start with Baby Step 1, which is saving up a starter emergency fund of $1,000.

As a reminder, Baby Step 3 is going back and fully funding your emergency fund with three to six months of expenses. Notice that I said expenses, not income.
