An increasingly popular trend, graduates stepping out of universities and looking ahead for their ﬁrst interviews are closing their social networking pages. Reason: Big brother is watching. Job hunters are increasingly conscious of anything they put into the online sphere-even e-mail, which, of course, can be forwarded to anyone. These are not entirely paranoia. There is anecdotal evidence and some HR reports talk about corporate recruiters are Googling potential employees, having interns log onto social networking sites to check out an applicant’s proﬁle, and using the online world as another way to check references. This trend, combined with the growing population of sites like Orkut, Facebook and MySpace, has many young people uneasy and unsure about how to navigate a new world. B-school administrators and professors are beginning to advise students on maintaining a professional presence on social networking sites, in

In a survey by AfterCollege. com a little more than 70% of the 60 students say they continue to post the same things they always did, even though potential employers might be taking a look. 7 MILESTONES TO CAREER GROWTH & EXCELLENCE By: Mikah Dhom Achieving excellence in our work is an integral part of feeling genuinely satisfied in life. We want our careers or businesses to blossom, making us financially secure and content with our achievements. Here are seven steppingstones that lead to career growth and excellence. When used as part of a total action-plan, these stepping-stones can contribute tremendously to the fulfillment that you desire.

1. Make a Commitment to Excellence A passionate commitment to excellence is a primary step to growth in any endeavor. It is not enough to say we want to be excellent; we must make a commitment. Whether you are an entrepreneur, business owner, employer, or employee, commit yourself to becoming excellent in your chosen ﬁeld. When you commit yourself to excellence, you will grow personally as well as professionally.

2. Empower Yourself and Others by Continuing to Learn A commitment to excellence requires continuous learning. 3. Multiply Your Eﬀorts through Networking

Think of three leaders who you admire. What traits and leadership skills do you admire the most in these leaders? This question will reveal your deepest leadership values. Leading with empathy is leading from your deepest values. These values allow you to focus on the strengths of those you lead; they allow you to lead others in ways you would want them to lead you.

Tell many people about the specific ways that you can help to meet their needs. For example, instead of saying, “I sell real estate,” you might say, “I help low income families find quality, affordable housing in areas where they’ve always wanted to live.” Tell people what makes your service or product special. However, keep your interactions light-hearted and spontaneous. Ask questions that show your interest in the other individual. Make your personality as well as your service memorable. Compile a list of people with whom you want to work or do business. Attend seminars or workshops and network at every opportunity. If someone does not need your service, he or she might know someone who does. Keep a supply of business cards with you at all times. 7. Serve with Love, Faith, and Gratitude We receive in this life only that which we ﬁrst give. That includes our thoughts and attitudes. Fill your thoughts with the spirit of love for those you serve. Communicate your deepest gratitude to customers and clients for their trust in you. Show gratitude in special ways that provide more value than expected. Trust clients and customers to make decisions that are right for them. Q: In 2008 I was convicted of a drug felony, it was a possession charge and as felonies go, it was pretty minor. Since then I have completed my Bachelors in psychology, and I plan on going on to graduate school in January. I have tried applying at multiple places, but no one is interested due to the felony I have. Do you know of any companies that hire felons--preferably something that pertains to my field, but anything will do at this point. -Houston, Texas Reader A: You need to be proud of the fact that you have completed your degree, and I think you’ll see different attitudes once you finish the Masters. I am asked this question so often, and I don’t have a list of companies that hire felons and haven’t been able to find one online. There are several organizations that work with felons, for those projects has been cut.

It’s really too bad, because that help can make a big difference for ex-offenders – and that benefits everyone!! There is so much competition for every job and many people have squeaky clean backgrounds. The best advice that I can give you is to realize that everyone has an area where they may not shine as bright – and your felony is that area for you. Obviously your persistence and dedication to your education is your shining achievement. You have to make sure that your resume emphasizes that so you can overcome your competition. You’ll be the first to go if they have cutbacks because they’ll save the people who are more loyal. Statistics show that people who accept a counteroffer usually leave voluntarily in six months or are let go within one year. That’s no fun. P A Y F O R MAKING GROWN-UP GRADES? CHOICES Dear Dave, What’s your opinion on rewarding kids with money for getting good grades in school? Joe Dear Joe, Honestly, I don’t have a strong opinion about it one way or the other. We didn’t pay our kids for good grades, but I can’t really think of a strong argument not to pay them for success in school. You could say you shouldn’t pay them because it’s something they’re expected to do anyway, and that’s somewhat valid. But you could also make the same point where chores around the house are concerned, too. We paid our kids to do some chores, but really the point is not about the economic value. It’s the fact that you want your kids to associate work with money. I still meet people my age and older who haven’t made that connection. Work creates money, and that’s an important thing to teach your kids. Once they’ve created some money by working, then you want to use those moments to teach them to save, spend and give wisely. You can do this around the subject of grades if you want. There’s probably a valid case to be made that getting an “A” takes a lot more work than getting a “C.” You’re certainly not obligated to pay them for work or grades, but if you don’t do some of this – and teach them the proper ways to handle the money they earn — you’ll miss out on a lot a fantastic teachable moments. —Dave

Unfortunately, that’s not what I teach when it comes to getting out of debt and gaining control of your finances. The reason people are successful following my plan is because I teach common sense combined with an unbridled, scorched-earth kind of intensity. Let’s take a closer look at this. You have unpaid taxes, not to mention credit card debt hanging over your heads, and he’s talking about going on a trip and saving up for toys? I’m sorry, but that’s completely irresponsible. Remember when we were kids, and Mommy and Daddy wouldn’t let us go outside and play until we had cleaned up our mess? That’s the kind of thing I teach. There’s a process here. There’s an idea and a concept behind what I teach, and when you plug into it, you’re going to start moving in a positive direction. In short, behaviors have to change, Laura. The more dramatically they change, the better results you get and the faster you fix things.
