ZACH COUSINS Director of Operations/Part Owner of Caphin Coffee
How long have you been working as the Director of Operations for Caphin Coffee? I have been working with Caphin since May of 2013, but have held the title of Operations Director since December of that year.
What does your job look like on a day-to-day basis?
The feeling of pride that I get, when I see my product on the shelves of every Central Market in Texas, or when I see Instagram posts from people who fell in love with our coffee, 1003 28 - September 4, 2015 50 Vol.August20 Issue is priceless.
On a day to day basis, I can be doing just about anything. As director of operations, I am responsible for organizing and managing the day to day activities of the company, which means not only is it my job to set schedules and issue production and purchase orders, but it is also my responsibility to fill in for employees who can’t make it to work, or handle any special circumstances the company may encounter. For example, last week I started off by driving to Dallas and back on Monday to handle a special request from a customer, on Tuesday I was in the kitchen cooking coffee and training our night crew until 1am, on Wednesday I spent the day rewiring our filling machine which had shorted out, on Thursday I did sales calls and paperwork, and Friday I drove to Austin and back to make deliveries. Basically my job is to handle whatever it is the company needs at that specific time, as well as make sure all of Caphin’s long term, big picture projects are on target for completion.
What is your favorite part of your job? My favorite part of my job is the spontaneity and diversity of my tasks. The more our
company grows, and the further we push our concept, the more I will be pushed outside of my comfort zone into new frontiers, and subsequently, the more I will learn. My job is challenging, demanding, and at times extremely frustrating, but it has never been mundane. As long as I continue to learn and push the boundaries on what I can do personally and professionally, I will continue to love my job.
Tell us your story of how you came to be in this position. In 2013 I was enrolled at the University of Houston in the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship program. One of the most amazing parts of WCE is their outstanding mentorship program. Knowing that my passion lay in the food and beverage industry, the directors of the Wolff Center matched me with my mentor, Huan Le, who was in the planning stages of starting a bottled Vietnamese iced coffee company, Caphin. Huan asked me if I wanted to come aboard Caphin as a summer sales intern. I began at the beginning of that summer, and long story short, by New Years of that year, I had been awarded equity in the company and worked my way up to Director of Operations. I viewed the job, company, product, and people involved as the perfect opportunity for me to finally utilize my work ethic and determination in a challenging, fast paced environment where I could create my own future and job security, without limit.
What advice do you have for people who are going into your career field? The food and beverage industry is not easy.
The person in my career that has had the biggest impact on me, has been Caphin’s President and my personal mentor, Thomas Kuo. Thomas took me from a sales intern with little professional experience and has personally molded me to where I am today. When I first began, Thomas and I spoke on the phone at least 10-15 times per day. Some of it was coaching, some of it was scolding, some of it was just goofing around telling terrible jokes. Now, after two years of Thomas personally developing me, we operate like ideal business partners and can anticipate how each other will respond to a given situation. Thomas has not only turned me into a more competent business professional, but has become a lifelong associate that I cannot imagine doing business without. Margins are thin, logistics are difficult, hours are long, and egos are hard to manage. However, it is also incredibly rewarding. The feeling of pride that I get, when I see my product on the shelves of every Central Market in Texas, or when I see Instagram posts from people who fell in love with our coffee, is priceless. When we first started, everyone told us that our concept just wouldn’t work. Now, less than 3 years later, we have proven our concept, and those same people are telling us how lucky we were. If you are going to make it in the food and beverage industry, you must have patience, perseverance, and above all else, passion. If you do not absolutely love and believe in your concept without a single doubt in your mind, you will never make it. You must be 150% convinced in your product and brand, even if that means you are 50% delusional.
Was there a person in your career that really made a difference?
of age, I was an unemployed, high school dropout, living on the floor of an art gallery, doing freelance construction work and surviving off of mostly potatoes and taco bell. In five short years, I transcended from the lowest point in my life, to graduating with honors from a top ranked entrepreneurship program, and to being a partial owner of a company in the industry that I love. The hardest part was taking that first step, consciously making the decision to change my life, and promising myself I wouldn’t stop or give up, no matter how challenged and uncomfortable I feel. What is the most important thing you learned in school? There are two very important things that I learned at the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship. The first was taught to me by director Ken Jones, and that is “Cash is King”. No matter what the potential of your product is, the strength of your brand is, and how great your books look, if you don’t have ample cash for expansion, you can literally grow your company to death. The other is more personal, which I learned from WCE’s director Dave Cook. Dave taught me to stop looking at myself as the “underdog”. As soon as I began to view myself as someone clearly capable of greatness, the world began to as well.
What is your greatest achievement outside of work?

AUSTIN - Texas added jobs for the fourth consecutive month with the addition of 31,400 seasonally adjusted nonagricultural jobs in July. The state has added jobs in 57 of the last 58 months. “Texas employers added 31,400 jobs in July, resulting in an increase of 260,500 positions over the year,” said Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) Chairman Andres Alcantar. “The steady growth in jobs demonstrates the strength and diversity of the Texas economy.” Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate remained at 4.2 percent in July, the lowest monthly unemployment rate since July 2007. The state has posted a 4.2 percent unemployment rate in four of the first seven months of 2015. Texas’ unemployment rate continues to trend well below the national rate of 5.3 percent and is down from 5.0 percent a year ago. “A declining unemployment rate is great news for our state,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Ronny Congleton. “Texas workers are among the most talented and skilled in the world and we continue to seek and implement strategies to connect our skilled workers to good-paying jobs in all regions of our state.” Employers in the Trade, Transportation and Utilities industry expanded their payrolls by 13,300 jobs in July, contributing to a 3.0 percent annual growth rate for this industry. The Leisure and Hospitality industry added
jobs for the 49th consecutive month, with 5,300 positions added, and the Construction industry picked up 2,200 jobs in July. “Over the month, private employers added more than 20,000 jobs, strengthening the Texas labor market,” said TWC Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “TWC and the network of Workforce Solutions business service specialists partner with employers in Texas to help ensure that their workforce remains competitive in the global marketplace. I urge employers who have specific skills needs to utilize TWC training funds by working with their local community colleges to apply for a Skills Development Fund grant.” The lowest rate of unemployment for a Texas Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) belonged to the Midland MSA in July with a not seasonally adjusted rate of 3.3 percent, followed by the Amarillo MSA with a 3.4 percent rate and the AustinRound Rock MSA with a rate of 3.5 percent. ASK DIANA Q: I have been working in a small, two physician doctor’s office for the last 3 years. I have worked my way from receptionist to office manager in that short time and I am always given praise by my boss(es) for my can-do attitude and adaptability. Aside from the daily oversight of day-to-day office tasks, I have been working exceptionally hard on a project that involves an outside vendor. Last week, the CEO of that vendor (a $550 million dollar/ year IT company) paid us an onsite visit. My boss said that within 10 minutes of meeting me, he had already asked if I would work for his company and asked 2 more times before leaving our office that day. Of course my boss failed to tell me any of this until today. Even though I don’t know what position he was thinking of hiring me for, I am very VERY interested in pursuing a job with his company. I have the CEO’s email address and have been debating e-mailing him but don’t know what to say. Do you think it would be a bad idea to ask for a job through e-mail? And if not, how do I ask without sounding desperate?

Signs that a job post could be a scam: • It has a generic, over-used or vague job title. For example, “Admin Assistant” and “Customer Service Rep” are frequently used in fraudulent posts. • It fails to list a specific location for the job. • It lists a salary or hourly wage that seems “too good to be true” or very specific (e.g. $13.64 - $34.23 per hour). • The job is posted with a title that does not match the description.
• The posting contains strange sentences or misspellings. • The description has a lot of exclamation points and promises high income in one week. • The description boldly states “No Experience Necessary” but has a promise of high pay. • A response to your e-mail inquiry comes from an individual in a foreign country, looking to hire people in the United States. • The same auto response is generated to all of your e-mails.
Other precautions: • Never disclose your personal financial information to anyone via e-mail. • Beware of job offers that contain “trust exercises.” Legitimate employment processes do not require you to receive money and then spend it through purchasing items, donating to a cause, etc. • Beware of employment processes that use pressure tactics via text messaging. • Beware of employment processes that do not include a Human Resources contact.
