Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days. I am a Houston native who recently returned after living up North for many years. I have over 20 years of Administrative Assistant experience, but upon returning here, I have struggled to find even Receptionist work since I am not (Spanish) bilingual. I see ads everywhere which state “bilingual only” for many positions I am more than qualified to perform.

I also have a daughter who started school since we’ve moved back, and I’ve noticed that there are no classes for her to learn Spanish in public school, but there are students who are learning English there. There are no free Spanish language classes for adults either, but there are literally thousands of free English language classes for those who don’t yet speak it fluently. So why should anyone need to be Spanish/bilingual to obtain employment? How is any of this fair or balanced? Why doesn’t anyone talk about it? It just seems taboo and not “P.C.” this far South. It seems to me that we are no longer “just giving a leg up to immigrants who want to make a better life for their families here in America” - we are giving up our job market, our schools and our children’s futures. When I do say something, I get the response of “if you had a better education, you’d have a better job and wouldn’t need to be bilingual,” or “the times are changing - ride the wave or drown.” Neither of which is an explanation (by the way, I’ve also been told that life isn’t fair to begin with - also not an explanation).

I’ve even been called a racist on Facebook. I’m not - just wondering why, if English classes are free and plentiful, and Spanish classes are costly and a lot harder to find....why is it okay to require your employees to be bilingual? And why is everyone so glib about it, like I’m an idiot for even asking? The system seems so heavily weighted in favor of those for whom Spanish is their first language. I am German and speak German. My parents and Grandparents spoke it at home and it was my first language. But I wouldn’t expect anyone to speak it to me in a business in Texas. I understand that there are a lot of folks here for whom Spanish is their first language. I also understand supply and demand. However, why are we allowing ourselves and our children to be painted into a corner here in Houston? I doubt you’ll print this, but your opinion would be greatly appreciated. ~Balancing, in Humble Wow, your letter is a really tough one to answer. There are fewer and fewer Administrative Assistant positions because technology has replaced that position with voice mail and computers at every desk, and I think there will be even fewer as the years go by. It probably seems that there are jobs only for bilingual candidates, but that really isn’t true. Requiring both languages isn’t done to “accommodate immigrants” but rather to accommodate the company’s clients who may be located in a neighboring country. Unfortunately, companies can only consider their business needs when hiring, and English/Spanish fluency is important in many

industries. For instance, if you apply at one of the many German companies here in Houston or with the German Consulate, you’ll definitely have an advantage over people who do not speak German. It’s a simple business decision. When I researched the Humble Independent School District, I found Spanish classes for English speakers. Perhaps your daughter can contact a counselor at the school and find the classes that are oﬀered. Most of the people I know took Spanish in high school. Those classes are a normal part of the curriculum and are free. In addition many social organizations oﬀer free Spanish classes for adults. Check into it at your library or other organizations that help with employment issues. I would love to convince you that it isn’t unfair and biased for companies to follow business needs, but I suspect that you are so frustrated by your job hunt that you are not seeing the opportunities out there for you. I also suspect that you cannot be swayed from a firmly held belief that you are being “painted into a corner.” You would be a happier person and more likely to find a job if you just concentrated on what you need rather than what you believe is an unfair system. You are buying into a victim mentality that simply doesn’t help you achieve success. I hope that you can put aside your bitterness and consider the impression that you give future employers.
