I have a simple question -- how do I spin the fact that I was fired for unsatisfactory performance -- with a very complex background to it. Two weeks ago, I was fired from my job of six years for “unsatisfactory performance.” For the first four years I worked there, everything was great. I was promoted twice, assigned to train new employees, and given excellent performance reviews. About two years ago, things started to change. Our biggest client significantly reduced the amount of work they gave us and many of our most experienced people left or were laid oﬀ. When the work went back to its normal levels, the company owner either couldn’t or wouldn’t find new people; as a result, we were working 60-100 hours a week, without overtime pay, for months. Our work quality/ timeliness suﬀered and the client complained. The owner then put harsh policies in place which I felt would cause more problems. I spoke to him privately about my concerns, but he was firm in his decisions. The new policies I was

concerned about remained in place for about a month before they were quietly discontinued. I don’t know if it was related, but the next quarter, I was placed on probation and told that if I made a single mistake, I would be fired. The probation was supposed to end after three months, despite it being policy to only place people on probation for one month. I completed the probation successfully. In the middle of April, over three months after my probation ended, I received a notice that the client had found an error in one of the 100 or so analyses which I had written in the past six months. The analysis had been reviewed by two senior oﬃcials in our company, and they both missed the error. That same day, I was informed that I was being fired. The speed with which they fired me makes me believe that they were only waiting for an excuse. Since this is an at-will state, I didn’t feel that I could contest anything. How do I explain any of this to a potential new employer? Do I explain any of it? I don’t want to sound paranoid, and I know it’s a huge mistake to complain about previous jobs in

an interview, but I just don’t think that it was fair, and neither do the people who were supervising me, two of whom volunteered to be references after they heard I was fired. Do I explain the bare bones and ask them to contact the references for confirmation? Do I bring up my last set of excellent evaluations? How do I keep this from killing my chances of landing another job? I should probably add that the main client recently formally announced that their profits had significantly dropped for the last year. Whenever that happened in the past, the amount of work they passed to us dropped (sometimes by 50%) to make up the gaps in their budget.
