I remember a time years ago, after we’d gone broke, that we managed to scrimp and save and finally had a little bit of wealth. We bought a nice car and my son piped up from the back seat, all smug and satisfied, “We’re doing pretty good, huh?” I’ll admit it was kind of funny, but it was also a teachable moment. I looked at him and said, “I’m doing pretty good, but you’re broke!” That was a pretty consistent message around the Ramsey household as the kids were growing up. If you’re not working and making your own way, you’ve got nothing. The second thing is we taught them, from a very young age, was to work. That can start with simple things like kids cleaning up their rooms or doing the dishes after dinner. It should carry over to the teenage years as well. Every able-bodied child should be working and earning money, whether it’s their own entrepreneurial idea, at a store in the mall or babysitting. The third thing we did was based in our faith. As evangelical Christians, we taught our kids that we don’t really own anything. It all belongs to God, and one of our jobs is to wisely manage the things He entrusts to us. The first rule is to take care of your own household—the important stuff. After that, it’s okay to have some nice things, but it’s not all about pleasure. It’s also about giving and extraordinary levels of generosity.

My dad opened a credit card account in his name a few years ago to help with my college bills, and he made me an authorized user. Now he’s delinquent on the card and I’m receiving collection calls and notices. Do I owe the credit card company money? Steve Dear Steve, No, an authorized user is not liable. The account is in your dad’s name, and you didn’t sign anything. He’s the one legally responsible for the money owed. I want you to be careful, though. Lots of credit card companies will badger people and use all kinds of pressure and guilt trips to try to collect money from people who don’t owe them anything. They just want their money, and they really don’t care who writes the check. Get them to remove you as an authorized user today. Send them a letter demanding this via certiﬁed mail, return receipt requested, so you’ll have proof. Also, make sure they understand that you’ll sue them for about $10 million if they don’t comply immediately. You shouldn’t be reported to the credit bureaus for any of this, but companies can report just about anything—even inaccurate information—to the bureaus. You have rights as a consumer, and you are not legally liable for credit card debt when you’re just an authorized user. But make sure you check your credit report regularly in the future. Some of these companies make a habit of repeatedly downloading misinformation to the bureaus in an effort to bother and bully people into paying debts they don’t owe! —Dave

I have interviewed today for a shipping expeditor position. The interviewer told me it is not a hard job but is very fast paced, and I could be answering up to 160 E-Mails a day. Could you tell me what a shipping expeditor duties are and do you think I have the ability do this job? I have never done anything like this before. They will train me but I am still not sure. -Willis, Texas Reader Expedited shipping is faster (speedier) than regular shipping. Companies who do this have to always be on their toes and provide quick and accurate feedback. You will be answering emails both from shippers and from shipping companies. The question is not “Can you do it?” The question is “Will you do it?”

While it’s true that you’ve never done this before, I’ve told you that your previous experience may not be the best answer for you at this time. My advice is to go for it. I think you’ll find it refreshing to be in a new environment. I have been working at two jobs for about three months, and I am tired all the time. I work at a national retailer, and I recently took a really good job at an optometrist’s office. I wanted to be sure that I would get enough hours, but lately I have been working 60 hour weeks. Obviously the money is good, but I’m just not getting enough rest. You need to make some decisions as soon as you can so that you can be at your best. The retailer will be very busy from now until the end of the year, but traditionally your hours will be cut after the first

If you plan to move into management with the retailer, then work fewer hours at the optometrist. If you can see a career with the optometrist, choose to work fewer hours at the retailer. As a candidate for a job, we need to focus on how we can overcome obstacles in a positive way. #2: Put Teams First Whether we like it or not, teamwork is very big in companies today. The fact is that work is complex, requiring skilled individuals to work together. An interviewer might ask the fol-

lowing: “Can you describe a situation where you were part of a team? How did it go?” These are open-ended questions, and you need to put a frame around it. The best approach is to use an example, such as the following: “I recently worked on an important project for our company. The work effort required resources from different departments, and as the project lead, I needed buy-in from key people in different departments. Before moving forward, I called a meeting with key stakeholders, and we created a plan to satisfy the project objectives. We did this in a collaborative approach. By taking this approach, everyone was clear regarding expectations, and we met our goals.” By using examples, we make the situation real. Hiring folks want to hear about how you have done something important. The discussion is meaningful when you specify how you made something happen despite obstacles. Make sure that you keep the conversation positive, and avoid blaming anyone. You are hired to get things done, and not to complain. Successful job candidates need to keep a calm and confident approach. We should avoid canned responses. By having a professional and relaxed approach, we can focus on the message we wish to share.
