Just as you check out other people’s Facebook profiles to get a feel for who they really are, you can rest assured that other people are doing the same... including people who might be trying to decide whether or not to hire you or promote you. Your true identity is on display. That said, you will really want to give some thought to what your Facebook profile is really saying about you. Try looking at it through the eyes of a potential employer. Would that toosexy profile picture or all of those drunken status updates be material you’d want your next boss to see? If not, then it might be time to reconsider your Facebook content. Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’re safe because you keep a private profile either. More and more employers are making it a point to require temporary access to the Facebook accounts of potential new hires before making a final decision. If yours isn’t up to snuﬀ, then it’s a very real possibility that it could cost you the position.

If I’m interviewing for a minimum wage job, do I have to get all dressed up? I had an interview last Friday and wore jeans, a t-shirt and baseball cap. My brother says that the reason I didn’t get the job is that I dressed bad. It was just a low-paying job. -Alief, Texas Reader I’m guessing that you didn’t want the job, right? Your brother could be right because wearing interview clothes for an interview is a good idea. I’m sure that you made it plain that you didn’t respect the job. When you dress appropriately it shows respect for the interviewer, it makes you look good, and it gives you self-confidence. If you don’t want the job because it is minimum wage, don’t apply. You were trying to show your brother and the interviewer that you were too good for the job, but you showed them both that you just couldn’t cut it. That’s what we call passive aggressive behavior.

I am getting desperate to get a job. I graduated in May with a degree in Chemical Engineering, and I’ve had several interviews but no oﬀers. My parents are getting disgusted with me because they think it’s my fault. What happened is that I made a really bad decision after my graduation party and drove their car to another party. I had a fender bender and got a DWI. It doesn’t even appear on my record yet, but my lawyer told me that I should tell the recruiters about it when I interview. It was a stupid mistake, but I’m not a drunk. I’ve always been very punctual at work and have great attendance. But you already know this. Unfortunately it also carries a stigma that causes Human Resource professionals to worry. They will worry about job performance, punctuality and attendance. don’t think you’ve had enough interviews, and I think you anticipating bias. Since you are not seeking a Sales Engineer position and wouldn’t be driving a company car there are no legitimate reasons to let the DWI stand in the way of hiring you. Just keep interviewing and keep explaining that you worked to help pay for school. Give them your job references and tell them that you are always on time, and you don’t miss work. Encourage them to call your references to back your story. Tell them that you know you have a lot to prove, and you will be the most dedicated and determined employee they can find. And then show them that you are! I share a car with my roommate, and that has worked great for two years as we get started in our careers. Now she is at a company where they can call her to work on very short notice, and the car situation is becoming a problem. There are no bus lines to her job, but I want her to be able to work at the job she loves. I can’t keep leaving my job to go home and pick her up without impacting my work. Should we try to buy another car?

You have probably saved a lot of money by sharing the car for the last two years, but her job isdefinitely going to take some more planning. Would it be possible for her to drive you to work in the morning? She would then have the car if she gets a last minute call. If you are stationary at your job and don’t need the car throughout the day, this might be the answer. You could even car pool with a work buddy to get home in the evening. Wait to buy another car.

Do you have any suggestions for keeping track of things, or should we just rely on online access to the account? Ed Dear Ed,

I would set up a second checking account, one to which you both have access, that’s only for travel. Giving you both access allows you to track what you do and her to see what’s going on and act as your backup when it comes time to balance the register. Here’s an example. A few years ago we were remodeling our home. My wife and I opened a separate checking account and put all of our remodeling money in there. It was easier to keep the money separate, but we both had access and were involved in the account. Understand, this wasn’t a “his” and “hers” arrangement. It was merely for the purposes of keeping our everyday activities separate from the remodeling budget. When you get married the preacher proclaims you as one. That means throughout life and everything involved, including your ﬁnances! —Dave

Don’t use a land contract

problem is you don’t have the deed. The property is not in your name. You could easily run into a situation where you’ve paid the balance down for 10 years, then the guy you’re paying gets into a car wreck or another kind of ﬁnancial trouble and someone slaps a $500,000 lien against the property that’s supposed to be yours. Don’t pay for property that isn’t in your name, Keith. Land contracts, or contracts for deed, are dangerous for the buyer and just plain stupid! —Dave

Co-signer passed away Dear Dave, My father co-signed for my niece’s student loans, and recently he passed away. My mom didn’t sign for the loans, but would she be held responsible now? Denise Dear Denise, I’m really sorry to hear about your dad. But no, your mom is not on the hook for the loans. Your dad’s estate could be held responsible though. When you die, what you own stands good for what you owe. So anything he owned—perhaps his and your mother’s home—would have to stand good for it. This means that while your mom isn’t liable, the student loan would have to be cleared as if it were a normal debt in order for your mom to keep, free and clear, any of the stuff your dad owned.

There’s another possibility also. Federally insured student loans do not count against your estate when you die. If you pass away or become permanently disabled, the loan is forgiven. I believe that’s true for co-signers as well, but make sure you check into the situation carefully. We’re talking about the federal government, and they don’t usually operate in the realm of common sense!
