A minimum 3-year industrial manufacturing experience required. Inspect, diagnose, maintain or repair machinery, such as motors, pumps, conveyor belts, fans, variable speed drives, induction heating, etc. Understand machine relay control logic and PLCs. Read and understand electrical schematics. Requires strong electrical and troubleshooting skills to be successful. Must be willing to work 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts.

Requires formal training and previous experience. Must be skilled in the operation of engine lathes, milling machines and drill press. Must possess the ability to read mechanical drawings and machine parts per specifications. Must be willing to work 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts and 8-12 hour shifts with mandatory overtime.

All positions require the ability to lift 30lbs consistently, able to work in hot and cold environments, flexibility to work 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift, pushing/pulling over 30lbs of force, standing and physical labor. Previous industrial experience preferred. All candidates must satisfactorily complete a background and drug screen.

I have a question in response to your August 16-23, 2013 (Vol. 17 Issue 899) column - in which you advised against elaborating on reasons for being involuntarily discharged and would really like your help. I am finding more and more companies are requiring applications to be submitted on-line. Some of these on-line applications ask directly whether the applicant has been fired. I don’t know whether asking this is even legal, but that is the topic for another column. I am concerned with how to best answer this type of question. The question is usually mandatory with the choice of selecting either a yes or no radio button. Some applications will provide a comment area for elaboration; others do not. Any advice? Does selecting “yes” automatically disqualify the applicant from consideration. And, then there is always the last question that asks the applicant to aﬃrm all the information

provided is accurate and truthful - which is my preference. Please feel free to respond directly to may e-mail and post my question in your column; however, please don’t post any of my personal identifiable information. - Another Houston, Texas reader It’s true that companies are relying more on applications completed online, and it often gives you a disadvantage as an applicant. The letter in the August 16 issue of JobSparx was from a person who wanted to tell everyone every tiny detail of the reason that she was released. I simply advised her against that because no one cares about all of the political and bureaucratic bickering and scheming at your last company. You already know the answer to your question because you want to be accurate and truthful: you have to check that “yes” box. In some companies, in some situations, it will automatically disqualify your application. It may be because the software is designed to eliminate “yes” answers, it may be that the

person who read the application arbitrarily decided to ignore it, and it may be because they are lazy. I would think that saying that you were released from your job would take a lot of thought on the recruiter’s part. Was it from one of our competitors? Many times a recruiter can be familiar with specific companies and realize that the retention at that company is bad.

If there is space to elaborate, be honest and to the point. Don’t use the phrase, “will discuss in interview.” That almost guarantees that you won’t get an interview. Don’t point fingers or blame anyone at the last company. It seems to me that the online application can be a real trap both for applicant and recruiter. Nothing is less revealing than standardized answers to standardized questions. Betting that you really know a candidate and what she/he can do for your business with such skimpy details is just silly. In fact, it’s irresponsible. Of course some companies feel that they have been forced into handling applicants this way because of all of the time spent reviewing unqualified resumes.

Dear Lorenzo, It’s normal for a debt this old to have been sold a few times. My guess is the company that’s calling you is legit, and they probably bought the debt for pennies on the dollar. Whatever you do, don’t set up a payment arrangement. They’re asking for over $1,000 because they’ve added stuff like late charges and interest. Let’s go back to the original amount of $400 and see if they’ll accept a one-time, cash payment to settle things. Make sure you get it in writing if they accept and don’t give them a dime until after you get the written agreement. Then, once you have the agreement, send them $400. Do not, under any circumstances, give them electronic access to your checking account.

The No. 1 cause of bankruptcy in America today is medical bills, and credit card debt is a close second. That doesn’t mean medical bills only of the uninsured. It also includes money from co-payments, deductibles and the fact that people didn’t have any savings. One accident or unexpected event can leave you with thousands of dollars in medical bills, and that’s even with a good health insurance policy.
