Read and understand electrical schematics. Requires strong electrical and troubleshooting skills to be successful. Must be willing to work 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts.

Requires formal training and previous experience. Must be skilled in the operation of engine lathes, milling machines and drill press. Must possess the ability to read mechanical drawings and machine parts per specifications. Must be willing to work 1st, 2nd and 3rd shifts and 8-12 hour shifts with mandatory overtime.

All positions require the ability to lift 30lbs consistently, able to work in hot and cold environments, flexibility to work 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift, pushing/pulling over 30lbs of force, standing and physical labor. (Note: the following letter was edited for length.) I am a member of AANP. I have been a fluent bilingual (Spanish/English) RN/BSN for 18 years, obtained my MSN along with Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP) License with Prescriptive Right from NYC in 2009. Recently I became a certified ANP from AANPCP. I relocated from NYC to Texas 3 years ago when I completed my MSN degree but I never practiced as an ANP. Due to the state of Texas requiring NP certification prior to obtaining an APRN (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse) license coupled with multiple life altering personal issues, my NP career did not get oﬀ to a start when I moved to Texas. Recently I became certified and when inquiring with the Texas BON about eligibility for my APRN license, I was told that I am not eligible to apply for a APRN license until I complete an extensive refresher/orientation

to the full scope of ANP that must include at least 400 clinical hours because I have been out of school and have not practiced as an ANP for longer than 24 months. I have to find a company/organization that is willing to provide me with an NP internship/preceptor to provide that extensive refresher/ orientation. My contact with multiple established medical facilities has been unsuccessful because all of them require that you are enrolled in a school that is aﬃliated with their organization. Although I do have plans in the future to further my education to pursue a DNP degree, it is not what I want to do now. I’m kind of discouraged somewhat because I am coming across this barrier and the Texas BON oﬀers no assistance/guidance for this. I’m starting to feel stuck in this task. My macro concern is the reality that, if all I need is to locate a clinical site to be eligible to apply for the APRN license in Texas, and I don’t locate one, then my NP career will continue to stagnate. I’m writing for any guidance/advice/words of wisdom that

would assist me to obtain my goal. I’m just a certified NP whose only strong desire is to fully start my ANP career. -Houston Reader Wow, your letter is almost pure gobbledygook. I have to tell you that it has taken me awhile to fight through all of the alphabet soup to understand what you are saying!! I am willing to struggle through all the acronyms, but I’m betting that you just confound most people. If that is your goal, you’re doing a great job. If, instead, you actually want to communicate with the reader, you need to write more clearly. The crux of the matter seems to be that no one will take interns who are not currently enrolled in an educational program. Here’s the scoop: You have to follow the rules and guidelines set by the facilities. It’s their corporation and their rules. I’m sure that they are legally and legitimately in compliance to protect their company. No outside agency such as The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) has the ability to force a company to go against its own best interests.

If you want to practice as an Adult Nurse Practitioner in Texas, you’ll have to go back to school. If you want to pursue your Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), now might be the right time. My macro concern is that you are not presenting yourself in a positive light when you use such complicated and convoluted language. My favorite high school teacher always defined acceptable communication by saying: “Speech is good speech when it doesn’t call attention to itself.”

Our daughter is 11 years old, and we save $50 a month for her. Right now, we’ve accumulated $4,200 for college, a car or just savings in general. Should we be investing this money, instead of putting it in a savings account? Jill Dear Jill,

If I’m in your shoes, I’d choose college as the focal point over the other things you’ve mentioned. My advice would be to move that money into a 529 Plan with mutual funds inside. That way, it will grow tax-free from this point forward. Then, if you continue to set $50 a month aside for her for seven more years—and the stock market averages 11 to 12 percent—you’d have about $16,000 sitting there when she turned 18. That wouldn’t fully pay for college, but it’d be a great start. Plus, she can apply for scholarships and grants and work and save to help make it happen. As far as a car is concerned, I’d set up a separate savings account and agree to match whatever she saves. That way, if she can put aside $3,000 to $4,000, with the match she’ll have a pretty nice car. But in my mind, college is the most important thing here. If you guys can afford these contributions, and she wants to go to college and will hold up her end of the deal, you can work together as a family and make the idea of a college education a reality! —Dave

S h o u l d W e Stop Paying Commission? Dear Dave, Should families who are struggling to pay off debt still give their kids commissions for doing chores? Steve Dear Steve, Yes, but it doesn’t have to be a lot of money. Kids seldom get paid an amount that is equal to what the chore is worth.

To be perfectly honest, the chores most kids do—especially the little ones—aren’t worth that much. I wouldn’t pay a kid ﬁve dollars a day, or even per week, to feed the dog. I mean, it takes less than 30 seconds to scoop the food into the bowl! When it comes to paying kids commissions for chores, the biggest thing we’re trying to do is ﬁnd teachable moments. We want the kids to learn that money is tied to work. Then, when they have some money, we want to teach them about the three uses for money—spending, saving and giving. Teaching them wise ways to do those three things while you’re teaching them to work is the key. And you can do that for a small amount of money. —Dave

Emer gency Funding Dear Dave, How long should it take someone to fully fund their emergency fund? Chris Dear Chris, On average, building an emergency fund takes six months to a year. It takes about 18 to 24 months for most people to pay off all of their debt, except for the house. That’s if they’re gazelle intense, and have no life other than getting control of their ﬁnances. Baby Step 1 is saving $1,000, and not paying extra on your debts until you have that money in the bank. Once you’ve got a $1,000 starter emergency fund, then your list all of your debts except the house from smallest to largest and attack them with a vengeance. All you do is work and pay off debt until you clean up the mess. Once that’s done, you move on to the next Baby Step, which is adding to your emergency fund until you have three to six months of expenses set aside. Most people can accomplish that in six months to a year. There are always various factors involved because everyone’s situation is different. But in most cases, if you approach my plan with the kind of intensity I talk about, you can become debt-free except for your house and have a fully-loaded emergency fund is place in just two or three years! —Dave
