The answer, according to our National Study of Millionaires, is the 401(k). In fact, eight out of 10 millionaires said investing in their employer-sponsored retirement plan—which included 401(k)s—was their main tool for reaching millionaire status. That’s right: The same tool that thousands of millionaires used to build their wealth is likely available to you at your workplace! Are you making the most of it? In honor of National 401(k) Day, which was September 6, let’s take a closer look at what makes the 401(k) the perfect place to begin saving for retirement and building wealth: If your employer matches your contributions (and most do), you get an instant 100% return on part of the money you invest in your 401(k). That’s free money, people. Take it! Tax-deferred growth means your money grows faster. Pretax contributions lower your taxable income, allowing you to invest more. You can invest up to $19,000 per individual per year. If you’re 50 or older, the contribution limit increases to $25,000 per year to help you catch up. If you leave your company or the company goes under, your 401(k) is safe and you can roll it over directly into another retirement account. That’s a pretty good deal, right? But listen to me, before you start investing in your 401(k), you need to be debt-free (everything except the house) and have an emergency fund with enough savings to cover three to six months of expenses. Why? Because you’ll be able to invest more when you don’t have any debt payments, and you won’t have to turn to a credit card or your 401(k) to repair a broken air conditioner or car engine. We just helped move our son into a cheap, off-campus apartment a few blocks from where he is attending college. We signed the agreement, and are paying the rent, because he makes very good grades. Do you think renter’s insurance is a smart buy? It’s less than $12 a month, but the minimum coverage I can get is $15,000, and he probably has less than $1,000 worth of belongings there.

My two brothers-in-law and I have been thinking about going into business together as a side project in the real estate world. One of them is an architect and licensed general contractor, one has a successful painting business, and I’m a chief financial officer with a CPA background. Plus, I had a lot of construction experience as a young man. I know you’re not a big fan of business partnerships, but how do you feel about a family business like this? Dan Dear Dan, Going into business with family isn’t my big concern here. I’ve said many times that partnerships are the only ships that won’t sail, and I’m a firm believer in that philosophy. I would encourage you guys to set up a situation where one of you is the owner, then figure out a plan where the other guys get paid off the bottom line—as if they were owners. Trust me, anything with three heads is going to end up being a monster at some point. Here’s the thing about family businesses. When everyone understands their role and has the best interest of the company in mind, family businesses can be a lot more fun and more successful than non-family businesses. Statistics show the average family business lasts 60 years, while the average publicly-traded company lasts about 15 years. So, there’s nothing inherently wrong with the family part of the equation. Kevin Dear Kevin, I’d get renter’s insurance. My guess is it also comes with five or six figures in personal liability coverage, as well. That’s in case he’s out on the patio with his buddies, someone slips and falls, and they decide to sue because daddy’s on the lease. In a case like this, because there’s so little to start with, it’s not theft or fire taking the contents of the apartment that you’re worried about. It’s the liability portion of the coverage that makes it worth every penny of what you’d be paying. That alone makes it worth $10 to $12 a month just to make sure a slip-and-fall doesn’t mess with your life —Dave

Applying for jobs is tough. When trying to stand out in a field of candidates you don't just want to be noticed, you want to be the best. You know how great an employee you are - and you want the hiring managers to see it, too. But how do you accomplish that? Our experts at JobSparx went through our tips catalogue and compiled this list of 25 ways to get noticed and hired, from attracting attention before the interview to navigating thank-you notes.

GeTiGOtCe 1. The quickest path to a great job is through a recommendation. If you know someone who already works for your potential employer, ask them to refer you! Some companies will even pay your friend a referral bonus for connecting you. 2. Recruiters are out there looking - so be visible. Make sure your LinkedIn and other social media are up-to-date and professional. There is also an option in your account settings to set yourself as "available" to recruiters. Who knows, maybe your dream job will find you! 3. Create a portfolio. Gather examples of your best work and put it somewhere recruiters can find it. Show off your greatest ideas and projects and be ready to brag when someone asks how you accomplished these feats. Recruiters can't see your value if you aren't flaunting it. 4. Ask your connections to publicly praise you. It seems awkward, but asking a former colleague to endorse your skills or write a recommendation letter can be the difference between getting a call or not. Don't be afraid to ask for specific skills highlighted in their letter, and if you can, return the favor immediately so they can reap the rewards as well. 5. Give them a taste of your skills. A surefire way to show your worth to a potential employer is to help them improve their product or service. If you have an idea for how to improve the way they are currently doing things they want to hear it, and if they agree that it helped you just made yourself a valuable asset before even being hired.

CrAtNgAOvREtErAn rSuE 6. Be specific. Hiring managers look through so many resumes and cover letters they can sniff out fluffed qualifications and see through your grandiose titles. Give them real data to evaluate you with. List the time you saved your former company 20% on production cost for a project, or the time your design increased traffic to the site by 8%. Concrete facts will impress the reader much more than vague bragging about "improving synergy" ever could. 7. Put some personality in there. After reading their 200th cover letter the hiring manager will be feeling pretty bored. Remember that they are not only looking for someone to complete a set of tasks, but a potential coworker they will probably interact with on a regular basis. Give them something to latch onto and think "This is someone I can see chatting with at a company lunch!"

8. Do your research - and show it. When crafting a compelling cover letter ALWAYS spend some time on the company website to get a good idea of what they do. Read up on articles written about the company as well, both good and bad. Is the company focusing on a specific area right now? What areas are they struggling in? Reference in your cover letter how you could help mitigate their flaws, or boost their new initiative. 9. Go the extra mile. Adding something they weren't even asking for to your application is one way to stand out from the crowd. Maybe they got 150 resumes but you were the only one to turn in a portfolio or cover letter. That will immediately attract attention. 10. Target your application to the right person. Instead of mindlessly clicking apply on national job boards like Indeed that use algorithms to scrape jobs off company sites, search for openings on local job sites like JobSparx that keep listings up to date and only post jobs from verified employers. 11 Apply on Mondays. Research shows that hiring managers are more likely to respond to applicants who apply early in the week, and those applicants make it further in the process than those who applied later in the week.

MaIn aFiStImReSiN 12. The person at the front desk matters. They might not get the final say in hiring you or not, but they will surely tattle on you if you are rude. Too frequently candidates forget that gossip and opinions spread quickly in an office, and often hiring managers specifically ask front desk attendants to watch for troublesome behavior. 13. The handshake IS important. Your experience and qualifications are obviously the first things considered by a hiring manager, but if you and another candidate are evenly matched, it might be subtle differences that make the difference. Be sure to practice your handshake and smile before the meeting. 14. Best dressed doesn't always mean a boring grey suit. Show a little personality with your outfit. Be professional, but include a pop of color or pleasing pattern to help visually distinguish yourself. This is especially important in customer facing roles or creative positions. 15. Remember their name. It can be stressful meeting someone who will decide your fate, and that can make remembering details difficult. Put effort into listening when the hiring manager or recruiter introduces themselves, and then repeat it back to them a few times during the conversation to help it lodge in your mind. This will help you seem engaged and interested, and will come in handy when you need to send a thank-you email afterward. 16. Watch your body language. These people have been through a million interviews and they can tell when someone isn't paying attention or isn't open to new ideas. Sit with your arms and legs uncrossed, sit up straight, and make eye contact with whomever is talking. If you are being interviewed by multiple people, make sure to respond to the person who asked the question, not to their counterpart as that can be rude. When asking your own questions at the end, make sure to get individual feedback from each of them so they can tell you value their input and want a variety of responses.

If the website has a blog or the company Facebook and Twitter are active, go ahead and read through as much of those as you can. If they always host a Halloween party with a costume contest, you can mention a specific costume you liked from their social media post and speculate on what you would choose to wear if they hired you. Comments like those help hiring managers picture you as a member of the team and indicate that you would fit in well with the company culture. 18. Take your Portfolio with you. Even if they have already seen your work it is a great opportunity to brag about your accomplishments, and it gives them the chance to ask questions and get further information about your skills and experience. 19. Remind them of your resume statistics. Those hard numbers you included on your resume? Mention them again in person to help them really sink in. If you are likely to forget the details when nervous don't hesitate to whip out a copy of your resume to bring with you for reference. 20. Be ready with questions about the job. This job search is about finding the perfect job, so while it is important to impress the hiring managers, it is also important to make sure you will enjoy the job. Ask about training, management styles, what your potential coworkers are like, what the hours are, and more! If you saw a troubling review on Glassdoor before the interview now is the time to get clarification. 21. When being asked a question, don't be afraid to ask for clarification before answering. You can give a much better answer if you know specifically what they are looking for. Plus, asking follow up questions will show them that you are thoughtful and can think through a problem before jumping at a solution. 22. If you have an inside connection - USE IT. If a friend told you about the opening or you met a friendly recruiter who told you to apply, don't forget to namedrop them during the interview. Often in the case of current employee recommendations they will then go ask about you, so make sure they will hear only good things!

Th fLlWP 23. In 2019, an email is usually preferred to a mailed thank you letter, but for some positions a physical card can have the right touch. If you want to ensure your thank-you doesn't take too long in the mail, go ahead and have the card ready in your car or bag. After the interview you can head out to your car, fill out the card, and return to give it to the front desk immediately. 24. Use the thank-you note to remind them of your good points. When crafting the follow up make a list of times the interviewer responded positively to your answers or praised your experience. Use a quick reference to one of those times in your note to help solidify yourself as a good memory. End the note by reiterating you interest in the position and your hope to hear from them soon. 25. Be patient. Sometimes the hiring process can take time and while you may be antsy to get to work, there are often distractions or reorganizations that need to be made behind the scenes to prepare for a new hire.
