Green construction jobs are becoming the norm in the contracting and construction industries, so to remain competitive construction professionals must expand their skill set in the green and eco-friendly building fields. More companies are opting to construct green buildings, with seventy percent of executives and developers making their firms part of sustainability programs for tax breaks and the benefit of reduced operating costs. Financial benefits like these are among the many reasons why green buildings are being built so frequently and why there is a demand for workers and contractors with sustainable construction skills and a familiarity with eco-friendly construction. But what do contractors, journeymen, and construction specialist need to know about working on green buildings?
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Michael_M_DeSafey/1832732
GREEN BUILDING OPERATIONAL CATEGORIES The diverse nature of green construction means that contractors, builders, and designers working in the industry must have an understanding of the following sub categories in green building: • Surveying and planning • Energy efficiency • water conservation • Indoor air quality • Onsite construction practices
CREDENTIALS & CERTIFICATIONS AND WHO SETS THE STANDARDS The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is a respected advocate for green construction and a nonprofit organization which created and maintains the standards used to rate buildings sustainability. The USGBC’s standards are a part of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design’s (LEED) building rating system and by utilizing these standards the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) judges buildings against a LEED’s scorecard. Buildings looking for

certification earn points in categories like energy efficiency and design and those categories listed above. If a building’s score is sufficient it is eligible to receive Silver, Gold, or Platinum LEED certification, and this certification is so respected that certain jurisdictions in the U.S. have made it a part of their building standards and codes. Nationally the U.S. General Services Administration mandates that any and all major federal renovations and new construction projects meet the LEED Gold standards, while private developers pursue LEED certifications in order to broadcast their ecofriendly credentials. Though LEED is the standard in the United States, alternatives do exist, like the Green Building Initiative, which offers a comparable green construction certification. Still, some green construction certifications are better than others, with a few being more expensive and complex, requiring contractors, designers, and builders to do some research on them before applying.
CERTIFICATIONS FOR PROFESSIONALS The GBCI provides both building certifications while also accrediting professionals and contractors working in the green construction field. Also, LEED Accredited Professionals are eligible to work on projects where official LEED certification is pursued. These contractors can also already be working as a project’s architect or designer. The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) created a certification specifically for construction supervisors, with the endorsement of the GBCI. Frontline construction managers can be certified under the LEED’s green building agenda on a project, by the project’s Sustainable Construction Manager.
OCCUPATIONS & TRAINING FOR GREEN CONSTRUCTION There are several national and local organization offering training for green construction trades in the US including the following: The NCCER (National Center for Construction Education and Research): • A not-for-profit created to outline a standardized training module for green construction officially recognized as the industry standard by both the Green Building Certification Institute and U.S. Green Building Council. • Workers with existing proficiency in a trade looking to augment their resume with green building techniques skills should contact their local NCCER sponsor or employment and trade centers for training opportunities. The Associated Builders and Contractors • The ABC has been heavily involved in developing green construction training programs for those looking to enter the industry with a respected certification. Right now a background and training in green practices are essential for a specific occupation. But it is the engineers and the architects who require a substantial amount of training, education, and certification for skills specific to green construction. These specialists must turn to groups like the ABC, NCCER, LEED for guidance on their particular specialty. However, in many cases construction laborers might work differently on a green construction site, without the need for extensive specialized training. Specialty trade workers with proficiencies in installing things like energy and water efficient structures and appliances or those using new green techniques require additional training. Michael DeSafey is a leading executive recruiter for professionals in the construction, engineering and environmental industries. tries to hide it from the manager giving the meeting! I have heard the managers talking about it, and the comment is always that she might get fi red if this keeps up. I don’t want to tattle to management, and I don’t particularly want to share my information with her. She is such a clown and cutup that it looks as if she just doesn’t’ care. Obviously I want to keep the confi dence that the HR managers share with me. What should I do? Q: I live near Katy, but I would like to move closer to the Galleria or even to the Champions area on 1960. I have been looking for a job in those parts of towns, but every time that I explain that I want to move to their area, they sound suspicious and never call me back. What should I say that won’t shoot me in the foot? -Houston, Texas Reader A: You can blame all of the other people who have told us the same thing, and then they start complaining about the commute the minute that they start working for us. Many people just tell us they will be moving so that we’ll consider them, but they have no intention of moving. If you are really planning to move, put the info in a cover letter. Just say that you will be moving to the 1960 area soon and want to work nearby. Q: One of the girls at the office looks like she’s pg, but we haven’t been brave enough to ask her. How should we ask? -Pearland, Texas Reader A: Seriously? She’ll tell you if she wants you to know. Surely you have better things to do. How about working? Q: One of my coworkers goes to sleep in every single meeting. that she is invisible, because she always
she17, believes AUGUST 2018 34I think
-Houston, Texas Reader A: I think the best answer is to do nothing. If she doesn’t realize that her job is in jeopardy, she isn’t thinking. If she does realize it and keeps clowning around, it shows that she doesn’t care about the job at all. You can’t save her from herself. Q: I have seen the ad for WorkFaith Connection in JobSparx, and I would like to participate in one of the workshops. I really hate to be in big crowds of people and wanted to know if these are big classes. Thanks. -Galleria Reader A: I just talked with Ken Kapp at WorkFaith, and he says the workshops are kept small to allow more instructor/student interaction. Each class is about 8 to 15 people and is aimed to give you the best information possible. Remember that they have three locations to serve you, and you should be able to fi nd the perfect workshop for you! Good luck. -If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days. Careers in
Elka Torpey | July 2018
Elka Torpey, “Careers in disaster relief,” Career Outlook, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, July 2018.
Sara Hicks-West understands disasters. As a disaster director for the American Red Cross, she plans for and responds to hurricanes and other catastrophes. “It’s a very stressful environment,” says Hicks-West of working in the wake of a natural disaster. But the job has its rewards, too. “To go into a shelter and know that there are individuals who are safe because of all the work you’ve put in, there’s great satisfaction in that,” she says.

After meeting people’s immediate needs and restoring basic services, disaster relief workers help with economic recovery—including helping people get funding for repairs. Recovery workers help to address housing, health, and social services needs and assist in rebuilding communities.
People who work in disaster relief have a variety of jobs, but they all have a common mission: ensuring that when disaster strikes, help follows. Keep reading to find out more about careers in disaster relief.
Mitigation. To prevent or reduce damage from future disasters, relief workers do a variety of tasks in the affected community. These tasks include assessing possible weaknesses, taking steps to strengthen infrastructure, and educating the public about ways to lessen risks.
PHASES OF RELIEF WORK
EMPLOYMENT
Some workers, like Hicks-West, have full-time positions with a primary focus on disasters. Others have relief-related training or specialized skills but work full time in another job and are on call to help when disasters occur. And many other people volunteer or work in temporary jobs that last only until recovery efforts are complete. Disaster relief work is commonly divided into four phases: preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation. Preparedness. During the preparedness phase, disaster relief workers develop and refine emergency response plans. They also conduct training exercises to get ready for a variety of possible scenarios.
Response. When disaster strikes, and in the days and weeks that follow, relief workers coordinate logistics for carrying out response plans. Emergency management agencies at the state and local level usually have a primary role in providing disaster relief in their communities. These agencies may be assisted by the federal government, nonprofit organizations, and, in some cases, private companies. Among the federal agencies involved in coordinating disaster relief services are the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. According to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, those agencies employed 34,070 and 17,730 workers, respectively, in 2017. BLS counts employment in nonprofit and private groups that provide relief under the “emergency and other relief services” industry. Employment in this industry more than doubled between 1990 and 2017, with continued growth projected through 2026. Workers in community food and housing, and emergency and other relief services include those in management, community and social service, and delivery occupations, among others. ment growth in relief services occupations is projected to be faster than the average for all occupations from 2016 to 2026.
PROS AND CONS
In many ways, disaster relief work is unique. Workers may be on call for days or even weeks. And they must be prepared to travel on short notice—and expect long workdays of indefinite stay when they arrive. Working conditions at a disaster site may be difficult because of both physical challenges, such as a lack of running water, and emotional ones, such as processing the sight of death or largescale destruction. Knowing that people’s lives and well-being may be at risk, along with the uncertainty of the disaster’s aftermath, adds to the stress of the work. “You do the best you can, but it might not always be enough,” says John Osborn of the National Disaster Medical System, a federally coordinated healthcare team.
be in difficult, even desperate, situations. “There’s a direct connection,” says Laura Wolf, chief of the critical infrastructure protection branch at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “between helping people and making sure that lives are saved.” Preparing for a career The education, experience, and training typically required to enter occupations related to disaster relief differs, as table 1 shows. But some skills and preparation are common among these workers. For example, workers usually must have problem-solving skills and be able to adapt to changing scenarios—one relief event at a time. “Every disaster is unique,” says Wolf. “There are standard operating procedures, but the disaster is always going to challenge those. You have to think on your feet and be mentally resilient.” Good communication and relationship-building skills are valuable, too, because disaster relief workers often coordinate with teams or individuals from both within and outside their own organization. Disaster relief workers may choose to complete formal programs in emergency or disaster management, especially at the bachelor’s- and master’s-degree levels. Other credentials, such as the Certified Emergency Manager and the Certified Business Continuity Professional designations, may be required or preferred for some jobs. Still other training options may be available either in person or online, such as free courses offered by FEMA. Many people learn different facets of relief work on the job, through experience in related positions, or by volunteering. For example, serving in the military, protective service, or certain healthcare occupations, such as EMTs and paramedics, provides a good foundation for dealing with emergencies.
However, a career in disaster relief can also be rewarding. People say they are drawn to relief work because they enjoy the challenges of responding to emergencies and the ambiguity that goes with it. They also like that no 2 days are alike, which keeps the work interesting. Some workers find it inspiring to see varied groups and people coming together during a crisis to achieve a common goal. “It’s really rewarding to figure out that puzzle, to think on your feet and work with a team of people who are all aligned for that same purpose,” says Osborn. Perhaps the most gratifying thing about relief efforts, workers say, is having an opportunity to improve the lives of people who may VOL. 23 ISSUE 1154
Experiential learning is valuable preparation for any career, but it’s especially important in disaster relief. “You learn by doing, so you need to try as early and as often as you can to go to disasters,” says John Fredenberg, who works at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Division of Strategic National Stockpile. “In our field, lives literally hang in the balance.” For more information Learn more about the occupations in this article—and hundreds of others—including what workers do, what their job outlook is, what their entry-level education and training requirements are, and more in the Occupational Outlook Handbook. Bring Your Diet to Work— and Leave It There By J. A. Young
Many diets fail simply because they are unsustainable and unrealistic in their long-term demands. And most dieticians warn that losing weight and keeping it off takes time. One sustainable method of dieting is going part-time and only dieting seriously while at work. Of course, the measures taken at work will be supported by not going off the culinary deep-end while away from work, but dieters can certainly find a level of success with a part-time method of dieting. Sticking to a diet is hard work, but work can actually bring structure to the diet and help take one’s mind off of food. Begin by considering the beverages you drink at work. A can of soda is roughly about two hundred calories. By drinking water, which is calorie-free and essential to the body for good health, you can effectively minimize calorie-intake by drink alone. How many saved calories per week this spells for dieters depends on how many cans of soda they drink per week. And be sure to choose water over diet sodas since many studies have shown that diet sodas are ineffectual when it comes to dieting despite their low caloric count. Water is better for the body; it flushes away toxins and impurities and will get your body feeling better which is essential to making it look better too. The work day schedule is actually very conducive to dieting. Eat only at the allotted lunch time and avoid any snacking—unless it’s raw vegetables or something completely healthy and calorie-free— until after work. This might be tough for a week and you might be tempted to crash out with a bag of chips on the couch when you get home from the job, but you can train your body to hold out on the snacks and overtime this will actually shrink your appetite as the body adjusts to less food intake. Apples, grapes, and carrot sticks are definitely healthy snacks, but if the body can adjust to no snacks it is less likely to grab a piece of office coffee cake when you run out of fresh fruit or leave your apple at home on the kitchen counter. Maintaining the diet at lunchtime is the trickiest part of the day and so it’s important to get it right so the diet is not thrown off track. A salad can be loaded with more calories than some fast-food items if the dressing is overdone. Do your research and consider low-calorie options that are easy to make and take to work. Planning the meal and bringing it from home is a better idea than eating out at restaurants where you are less likely to be sure how many calories go into the meal and may also be tempted to make choices that aren’t low enough in calories to support your dieting goals. A small bowl of cereal with low-fat milk, non fat yogurt, a cup of tomato soup, half a sandwich on whole grain bread—these are just a few options for your working diet. The key is to stick to your plan while at work so that you can still eat the kinds of meals you love afterward. Dieting only at work may not get the weight off as quickly as if it was done fulltime, but it will make a strong impact in the long run and it is easier to manage than giving up all the foods you love. Dieting at work is a realistic approach to the diet dilemma that can translate into significant and lasting weight loss coupled with a healthier lifestyle. To capitalize on your work-time diet, remember to take the stairs as opposed to the elevator and walk around whenever possible.

COMMUNICATE AND WORK TOGETHER
IMPRESS THEM!
Dear Dave,
I just graduated from college recently. Is it a waste of time to apply for a job if you have a degree in the proper field, but no real work experience?
My wife and I are not on the same page when it comes to money and our two teenage daughters. I think they should be learning the value of work and money, but she doesn’t want them to work. She regularly hands them spending money and buys them expensive gifts. I want our girls to have some nice things, but this is starting to cause problems in our relationship. Do you have any advice? Stan Dear Stan, Kids should learn to work and make money at an early age. We’ve given nice gifts to our kids, but the difference is they also worked and made money for themselves. The gifts we gave them were for special occasions. Showering our kids with money and expensive toys all the time was not our way of life. In this situation, your wife is allowing them to be nothing but consumers. I know she loves them, but they’re not learning how to work, and they’re not learning how to save or give. This is setting them up for a lifetime of unrealistic expectations. If something doesn’t happen to change things, you’re going to end up with two spoiled little girls, who think they should be given everything their entire lives. Still, I think the biggest problem is you and your wife are experiencing a communication and marital breakdown. If the kids weren’t in the picture, I’ve got a feeling the same problems would exist. The difference is they would manifest themselves in other ways. Obviously, your wife needs to stop being so impulsive where the kids are concerned. Try sitting down with her, and gently explaining your feelings. Let your wife know you love her and how generous she is, but you’re worried this is having a negative impact on your children. Maybe you could try to establish some guidelines as to when really nice gifts are appropriate, too. There’s a middle ground you can reach, but it’s going to take some time and effort. Most of all, it means the two of you are going to have to communicate and work together for the good of your kids. —Dave

AUGUST 17, 2018
Dear Dave,
Daniel Dear Daniel, Absolutely not! The only sure-fire way to ensure you’ll miss out on a job is by not applying for the position. Send a copy of your resumé to every job opportunity for which you have a reasonable chance of being hired. Then, when you get an interview, go in there with your head held high. Be articulate, enthusiastic, and carry yourself with purpose. Use your style, intelligence, education, and confidence to sell yourself and your ability to jump in, learn quickly, and get the job done. I’ve met lots of people who say they have 20 years of experience. But in a lot of cases it’s more like one year of experience 20 times. That kind of “experience” is useless. I’ve also met many sharp, educated people without experience, but you can tell they’re the kind who will put their minds to work, think outside the box, and figure out a way to get the job done with excellence. As an employer, if I’ve got a choice between the two, that’s the one I want on my team! —Dave
