Dealing with
JOB LOSS
Losing a job is stressful, plain and simple. Looking for a new one is no easy task either, especially if you worry about how to pay the bills. But take a deep breath. Here are some tips to help you get back on your feet professionally and financially.
Look to your employer for help. Your company may offer a range of services, from workshops to retooling your resume to classes on how to look for jobs. Contact your State Unemployment Insurance Office for information about applying for unemployment insurance benefits in your state.
Make a budget.
Add up your monthly expenses and create a survival budget to get a sense of how long your savings can keep you afloat. Look for expenses you may be able to eliminate.
Consider your health care options. The Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation
Act, better known as COBRA, allows people who lose their jobs to buy health insurance at a group rate for a limited time. COBRA can be expensive. If you're relatively healthy and don't have chronic conditions, a bare-bones major medical plan may save you money while still protecting you from catastrophic emergencies. Visit HealthCare.gov to learn more.
Contact your creditors.
They may be willing to discuss some type of minimum payment. They’re much more likely to be reasonable with you if you tell them your situation upfront, rather than waiting for them to contact you after you’ve missed a payment.
Order a free copy of your credit report. It has information about where you
live, how you pay your bills, and whether you have filed for bankruptcy. Credit reporting companies and other businesses that provide background information sell your file to potential employers that, in turn, use it to evaluate your applications for jobs. It’s a good idea to dispute inaccurate information in your report so it can be corrected before your next job interview comes along.
Form a network.
https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/0402-dealing-job-loss
Networking is about building relationships and is a key part of job hunting. All it means is talking to others — either formally or informally — about your job search and career goals.
10
Join a professional, business, civic, or some other kind of association or club. It can be a good way to learn about trends and unadvertised jobs. Members often know employers with open positions. Association and club listings can be found online or at your local library. Visit CareerOneStop. Sponsored by the U. S. Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration, this site offers tools to help people look for work, and a directory of resources to help you cope while unemployed.
Be wary of job scams. It’s tough enough
to find a job without scammers trying to take advantage. During your job search, you may see ads for job placement firms that promise results. Unfortunately, some firms misrepresent their services, promote nonexistent vacancies, or charge high fees in advance for services that don’t guarantee placement.

New Year and Your
NEW
CAREER By Eva Jenkins
W
ith the start of 2019, many of us are mulling over the past year and taking time for some self-reflection on our lives and careers. Mostly, we focus primarily on our current state, i.e. if we are employed and/or whether we like our current role in our respective jobs. We also reflect to see if we are at the level this year where we imaged ourselves to be last year at this time? How is our personal life, or do we even have one? How do we feel physically? These personal and sometimes painful reflections are very appropriate as we ring out the old and ring in the new. They all have to do with our well-being.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Eva_Jenkins/2503225
Career well-being is feeling good about the work you do. It means you can truthfully answer "Yes!" to the question, "Do you like what you do each day?" We know that when our career well-being is solid and stable, we are healthier, happier and more successful over all. Career well-being doesn't happen by magic, of course. To achieve it, you need to act. So, if you want to turn in a new direction in this New Year, and you can feel and see (and even taste!) that you want more freshness in your life, I urge you to kick your resolve into gear and make it happen. As we reflect, we discover how to tune into our thoughts, and be mindful of our "emotions." This allows us to free and develop the "inner resources" that have been there all along. An important fact here is this: anything that helps support you in your cause is a "resource". A resource can be a person such as a coach or mentor, or it can be a situation such as an alliance with someone who shares your resolve to make things better. Mindfulness and self-knowledge are resources, too. Are you chomping at the bit to make a change? That's natural, but I urge you to be patient. There is no need for speed. In fact, impatience can be a tremendous drain on your motivation. The antics of an impatient mind are obstacles to your goals. you DECEMBERkeeps 21, 2018 22Impatience
stuck in the quick-
sand of confusion, unable to move forward quickly, slowly... or at all. It's valuable to understand that impatience is triggered after we have envisioned our goal, at the moment it becomes crystal clear that achieving that goal is going to cost us more, often much more, than we thought. When this realization hits us, our mental gears start spinning out of control. We begin looking for ways to avoid the high costs in time, pain, distraction, credibility or opportunity. You can fight back. Be aware that self-knowledge is your superpower. When you understand how impatience works its dark magic, you can manage it better. You can take full advantage of your impatient energy and use it to speed things up or change course when the time is right. On the flip side, you can learn to harness and calm impatient energy when it makes more sense for you to stay the course. When we adopt a more patient approach to change, we give ourselves an important opportunity to investigate our inner feelings and learn from our external experiences. I encourage you to take time to reflect on your career and the reason it matters to you. Let yourself feel why the professional and personal challenges you face and overcome every day are worth all the effort. Get clarity on why you do what you do; understand your core motivation and how to apply that to your future career. That's where success lies. Sometimes the greatest obstacle to change is the fear of change itself. If you're stuck in a defensive stance, you won't be able to change anything. Would it surprise you to learn that people do not naturally resist change? What we resist is the "pain" of making a change. We become paralyzed by our fear of the unknown. The human brain is a wonderful thing. It is engineered to naturally seek out, be curious, explore, and do new things. It's how the brain thrives. But to do all these things, you have to feel safe. Only when you feel safe enough will you confi-
dently go out and explore. Ultimately, when we accept and embrace change, we begin to seek it out and find valuable lessons in it. Therefore, we must do whatever it takes to make allies of the fear of change and the fear of the unknown and accept them unconditionally. Acceptance of change comes more easily to us when the brain's "Default Mode Network" (DMN) is activated. This is the part of the brain that is typically engaged when we are daydreaming, thinking about the future or being nostalgic. A human brain in DMN experiences a state of excitement which in turn helps make us receptive to change and opens us up to new ideas. This state of excitement also creates a physiological reaction, not just a mental one. It releases all the negative, self-sabotaging energy that is electrocuting your brain and allows you to see possibilities you've never seen before. When your mind is clear and calm, you begin to focus on solutions instead of dwelling on problems. I know this isn't easy. It takes determination, energy and powerful intention to connect with your desires. The good news is that every single effort you put forth will strengthen your ability to trust yourself and stand up for what you want. The return on your investment of effort will amaze you. The bottom line is this: when it comes to change, resistance is futile. So instead of resisting, you should welcome change into your life. Above all else, learn to enjoy all the twists and turns. Learn to adapt to whatever challenges comes your way and know that your attitude will help you move forward and reach your goal. The curve balls and surprises are what make life such a titillating adventure. Go forth and conquer! I am a Professional Coach who works with individuals, small business owners and executives to help align their personal vision with the commitments of their business and personal lives. Clients work with me to have a breakthrough in their personal effectiveness as they transform themselves and take charge of their "outer success" of career and work and their "inner success" of relationships and personal growth. You’re a what ? EXPERIENTIAL
DESIGNER Interview by Domingo Angeles
What is experiential design? Experiential design is communicating through graphic design for the built environment, whether it’s the interior of a building or outside. It’s for the people in a space, to help them find their way; or it could be to delight the senses. It all points back to communicating information.
What do experiential designers do? What we provide ranges from important educational or informational graphics to something that celebrates or enhances a brand. A project begins with architects and interior designers laying out the framework of the space. Then, experiential designers, who understand the flow of the foot traffic, determine opportunities where they can tell a story in that space. For example, people sometimes need help finding their way through a space and getting oriented—called “wayfinding.” The architect might suggest a location inside a building where he or she thinks the major foot traffic will be and might help determine where the design element will be. Then, experiential designers will be responsible for what the design element, such as a directional sign, will look like: the scale of it and, if it incorporates text, the colors and the typeface. All of that is informed by our research as it relates to the client.
Describe the design process, from idea to installation. The experiential designer works with the architect to come up with design elements in the space. Once we establish the design elements, we determine how the elements will look and function. Then, it’s on to the development phase.

DECEMBER 21, 2018
Jill Ayers Brooklyn, New York
In development, experiential designers outline the plan and how the project will be built. Next, we estimate how much the project is going to cost, and the client decides whether to proceed based on pricing. From there, we see that the project gets built correctly by reviewing samples and shop drawings. And then we oversee the installation. Throughout this process, we’re collaborating with the client or architect—or with the landscape architect if the project is for a park. Experiential design is a highly collaborative field.
How do you get projects? Getting involved in a project can happen in many ways. For example, we could be approached by a client with a problem, such as a need to orient staff or visitors through a space. Sometimes, we’re approached by an architect to work as a consultant. The designer may come on board as a specialist and deal with a specific need: to help users find their way, for example.
What sorts of projects do you work on? My company generally focuses on interior spaces, which could include retail stores, corporate offices, or residential buildings. But experiential design can also be in places like a park or an airport.
Talk about some of the qualities experiential designers need. Creativity and a sense of discovery are essential. We may come up with solutions that are practical, but having an imagination, really pushing and playing with an idea, is important because there’s no limit to what we can envision. Also, you need communication skills because designers have to be able to articulate to someone on the team what we are doing and why we are doing it.
Interview by Domingo Angeles, "Experiential designer," Career Outlook, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2018.
VOL. 23 ISSUE 1172
“With your interest in architecture and materials and your love for typography and graphic design, this might be an interesting way for you to combine the two.”
What’s your educational background?
cations degree. You can take courses in learning how to put together a project and in learning how to take a company’s identity and bring that into a branded environment.
I have a bachelor of fine arts degree, with a double major in industrial design and graphic design. I completed both tracks so that I’d have a working knowledge of industrial design with a focus on product design and I’d have a formal graphics education, too. In my case, when I graduated twenty some years ago, I was not aware of a program that specially trained you for experiential design. So I went to school for graphic and industrial design.
How did graphic design and industrial design lead to this career? Toward the end of my college years, I was trying to figure out how to blend my interest in product design and ergonomics with communications and typography. For independent study, my professor suggested I do a signage and wayfinding study for the art school, where I was taking classes. He introduced me to environmental graphic design through a project. He said, “With your interest in architecture and materials and your love for typography and graphic design, this might be an interesting way for you to combine the two.” Out of college, I ended up getting a job in a company that is known for signage and wayfinding for cities, hospitals, and cultural institutions. And that’s how I got my start. It really piqued my interest in graphic design, architecture, and materials.
Do you have any advice for prospective experiential design students? Because there aren’t a lot of experiential design programs, look into a school that has a graphic design program that allows you to take an independent study course. Or maybe there’s a particular class that focuses on experiential design. Even if there aren’t formal degree programs in experiential design, there are schools where you can get a graphic design or communiVOL. 23 ISSUE 1172
What do you like least about your job? There are times when you have to go after the work. We are always looking for partners, which we have to put energy into, and then balance that task against delivering the product to clients we are currently working with. It’s a challenge. You can’t just sit back and twiddle your thumbs, because then the work runs out.
What do you like best? It’s a pretty great field. We get to work with a wide range of clients. Sometimes, the projects have a really quick turnaround; other times, they take a year or more to do. And we get to help people, whether it’s just making their day more pleasant, informing them, or making sense of a space. It’s also really exciting to be creative and have your work out there. Our work has to have the ability to survive. So you can have something up for 3 or 4 or 20 years. That’s neat, because it’s woven into the architectural content. There’s something satisfying about that. Domingo Angeles is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS. He can be reached at angeles.domingo@bls.gov .

YOUR NEW YEAR'S
GOAL
Courtesy of DaveRamsey.com
It’s time for a fresh start. A clean slate. Your biggest dreams! Maybe you want to buy a home, save more for retirement, or enjoy a debt-free vacation next year. Now’s the perfect time to make a plan for your money and your goals! Whatever your New Year’s goals are, we have you covered with these simple steps to turn your wants into welldones: 1. Set aside time to dream big for next year. Go to a coffee shop, a book store, your favorite park — anywhere you feel inspired to dream big! If you're married, make it a date! Or spend some time thinking apart and meet back at the end to share your goals with each other. 2. Write down what you want to accomplish. Finish this sentence: Next year, I will . . . Be sure to make your dream specific, measurable, all yours, time sensitive, and written. The more in-depth your goals, the better your chances of accomplishing them. 3. Get a head start. What are some steps you can take early on to meet your goals? When you have a game plan, you'll hit the ground running when January gets here. As an example, if you are planning to go on a debt-free vacation next year, start a vacation savings fund in your budget! Take a look now to see how much you can start allocating each month. Give your goals action steps and reach them faster!

- What Your Clothes Say About You in an Interview Setting -
Make the Right First Impression By Michael M DeSafey What your clothes say about you... Making the right first impression is the most important thing you can do in an interview. One of the first things a hiring manager will notice and judge you on is your level of professionalism, confidence and strict attention to detail which is most clearly demonstrated in your choice of clothing. This first impression sets the tone for the meeting as a whole and will guide the nature of the conversation and questions for the duration of the interview. The National Association of Colleges and Employers conducted a survey and indicated that over 49 percent of hiring decisions are influenced by what the candidate wears. Your knowledge, experience and professionalism should be foremost in an employer’s mind, but we are only human and visually oriented individuals; so preparing your professional attire ahead of time for the interview is of prime importance.

THAT’S A LOT! Dear Dave, I’m on Baby Step 1 of your plan, and I work at a community college that takes a mandatory 20 percent from our pay for retirement. I know you say retirement contributions should be put on hold until all debt except for your home is paid off, so do you have any thoughts on this kind of system? It feels like it’s hard to get traction with getting control of my money when so much is being taken out of every paycheck. Kristi Dear Kristi, That is a lot to take out. I’ve heard of a few places that have a mandatory 12 percent contribution, but 20 percent? That’s very unusual. And it’s unusually high. I’m not sure what to tell you. I mean, you took the job. It’s what you signed up for. But if it becomes enough of an issue with your finances, you may have to decide at some point if you still want to work there. My recommendation is to begin setting aside 15 percent of your income for retirement after you’ve paid off all debt except your home, and you have an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses in the bank.
CASH OUT STOCK FOR EMERGENCY FUND? Dear Dave, I’m thinking about signing up for a return of premium life insurance policy. It costs more per month than other policies, but it allows you to get all your money back after 30 years assuming you live that long. Is this too good to be true? Tommy Dear Tommy, It’s not too good to be true, but it is a rip off. Never buy a return of premium life insurance policy. You said it costs more than other policies, right? Well, if you were to take that extra money you’d be paying and put it into a good mutual fund, you’d get all the cost of your policy back after 30 years 100 percent of the time. Return of premium policies are just a gimmick. When it comes to life insurance, always go with a good, 15- to 20-year level term policy. And always stay away from that return of premium garbage!! —Dave
At least you’re not losing the money, so it’s not the end of the world. It’s your money that’s going in there for your use some day. I don’t know the exact structure of the retirement account, but it is going toward retirement savings of some kind—and that’s important! —Dave

work from 10-7pm, but that was not true. I went to pick up my check after working two days. I was told that I wouldn’t get a check because I didn’t work a full week. Then the 360.00 that I was told that I could make was a lie because once I made two sales, it’s commission. He presented a piece of paper that I never signed. Now I have to wait until the following week to get paid. Please help me. Q: I need to fi nd someone that will look for a job for me. I’ve been to several places that say they have jobs, but they just give me a list of people who are hiring. They won’t actually send my resume to the client but they will give me training. One wants you to spend 8 days in learning how to interview, and they want to train me, but they won’t send me to any set-ups that they have arranged. How am I supposed to get a job this way? -Alvin, Texas Reader A: I’m pretty sure that no one is obligated to take you to an interview and get you a job. I’m really confused that you think you can call an agency, and you will automatically be placed with their client. Where you got the idea that you didn’t need to do any work, but jobs would just hop in your lap is beyond me. Most of the free services that have been designed to help candidates fi nd work are organizations that want to train you to fi nd a job. They are not a magic wish machine that guarantees you a career. You have to exhibit the desire to get a job by following suggestions and hustling a little bit. There are several agencies for laborers that send you out on jobs for a day or longer, if you just hang around their offi ces long enough. Maybe that’s what you mean. Just look up “labor pool Houston” to fi nd names. Q: I worked for a company called, and I was told when I got hired on that I would make anywhere from $360-$600. I said okay I worked three days my fi rst day was dec.6th I made two sales for cable I VOL. due 23 ISSUE 1172issues. I was told that I would stopped working for them to family
-Houston, Texas Reader A: Okay, as I understand it, you were told you would make between $360 & $600 per week. The huge swing in projected pay indicates that your pay would consist mostly of commission rather than hourly. You were also told some other information that wasn’t true about the hours. They also indicated that you would be paid only the commission on your two sales. Did they say you would receive a guaranteed amount? If they didn’t, it’s possible that this is a commission-only job. I can’t fi nd any information about their pay online. Of course you should get a check if you worked two days. You need to go to the Texas Workforce Commission to fi nd out if you can make a claim for the money. https://twc.texas.gov In actuality, they have to pay you at the same time that they write checks for everyone else. Read this to understand how paying your last check and your commission works: https://twc.texas.gov/news/efte/fi nal_pay.html Let me know if I have answered your question or if I missed something. -If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.
