Criminal Background Checks By: Jitender Sharma As an employer, it is understandable that you want to know as much as possible about a prospective employee. A combination of employment application, personal references and background investigations can give you a sense of peace when entrusting an individual with responsibilities within your company. It is also important that employers not rely solely upon the employment application alone. It is estimated that up to 30% of all applications contain some type of falsifications or fabrications. Many methods exist to inquire about the background of a candidate. One of the most utilized types of background checks is the criminal background investigation. All businesses handle some type of sensitive information of some degree. Retail businesses want to be sure prospective employees are clean from theft charges to reduce the instance of employee theft. Businesses or non-profits dealing with children and/or seniors are legally obligated to know the backgrounds of their employees. We have all heard the horror stories of an abusive childcare worker with a criminal background in which the employer was unaware. It is vital for the safety and security of both the business and those served that employers perform a thorough investigation of each employee. Employers should be careful to limit the information that they need based on the responsibilities of the specific job function. For example, when hiring an employee that will handle cash transactions, employers will need to know if the candidate has had any prior convictions regarding theft. It is also mandatory that the types of background investigations to be performed are clearly outlined in any pre-employment literature. With the increasing concern about privacy, it is in the employer’s best interest to be upfront and honest about any inquiry of this nature. The implementation of criminal background checks can greatly reduce the financial loss of a company by weeding out those who have criminal convictions. Another instance where criminal background checks can be useful is when an employee will be dealing with the public sector. In order to limit the likelihood of negligence lawsuits, employers should consider criminal background checks as a standard preemployment screening tool.
WANTED? 10
FEBRUARY 15, 2019
When calling upon a private investigation firm, an employer might not be sure of what information they really need. However, some of the most common concerns are about criminal conviction. In regards to criminal background checks, the Fair Credit Reporting Act prohibits employers from rejecting employment to those who have been charged but not convicted of a crime. When interviewing a private investigation firm, it is important to find out what information they gather and from what sources. Employers can be held liable of violating Federal law if they reject employment based on this type of information.

50: Six Resume Mistakes To Avoid by Robin Ryan Author of "60 Seconds & You're Hired!"
The million dollar question is this: can your resume get through automated and HR screeners so that you will get the all-important phone call to set up an interview. And is that call for a great job? At the right level and for a good salary? When you are over 50, you need to start worrying about these things. In a study using 40,000 fake resumes, the results showed compelling evidence that there is definitely age discrimination in hiring. You definitely don’t want your resume to scream I’m OLD! You don’t want it to say I’m dated and the employer to assume so are your skills and abilities. In my work with career counseling clients, I have written thousands of resumes in my 30-year career. I’ve seen so many mistakes that boomers need to avoid. For example, when I started my session with Tom, a 61-year-old manager who had a long career in the manufacturing industry, I saw some typical errors boomers make. His resume wasn’t producing interviews which prompted his call. As I looked over Tom’s resume, he was making SIX mistakes I’d like you to avoid so here is my analysis along with some comments from a Sr. HR Manager to help you create a better marketing tool that will help you get employers attention. 20 FEBRUARY 15, 2019
Mistake #1 Too Long Baby Boomers think that they need to tell their whole story when all employers really care about are the last 5-8 years. I recommend you leave off work descriptions you did prior to 2000 if you must bring attention to it only note the job title, company, and employment dates. Experience that is 20 years ago is so dated employers find little value in it. They hire you for the ability you have now, not when you started out. So edit the old experience out. HR recruiters continue to state that TWO pages are all they’ll read so never exceed that length.
Mistake #2 Too General Employers are worried that your best days may be behind you so the resume needs to be focused on how you still are a key contributor. Boomers tend to write very long, dull job descriptions. Employers are only interested in seeing the results you have achieved on the job. You should outline the accomplishments and outcomes you have recently delivered to your current organizations. Show how you created new things, have been innovative and solved key problems. Make mention of your bottomline contributions and quantify whenever possible.
Mistake # 3 Left the College Graduation Year Off or Fudged It Some job hunters removed the graduation date thinking employers can figure out their age. Omitting your year of college graduation was a concern for Lizzie Rahm, HR Senior Manager and Recruiter, Clark Nuber PS (https://clarknuber.com/) noting employers might wonder if you had ever finished your degree if they saw no graduation date. Another worry is that a third of all job applicants lie about their education according to a Career Builder study, and when I mention this to Ms. Rahm she quickly stated that her organization does a background check on every single person they make a job offer to. So if you are lying about the year you earned a degree to appear younger, it’ll come out. And if you claimed to have a degree you don’t that will be in the background VOL. 24 ISSUE 1179 continued on page 42

The sport of rodeo can be fascinating, both inside and outside the arena. Rodeos provide entertainment for both children and adults, but the sport also provides employment to a number of people across the country and around the world. From the contestants themselves to the individuals who care for the animals, many find employment opportunities in the sport of rodeo.
Rodeo Announcer
Rodeo announcers provide color commentary during each event in the rodeo, much the same way baseball and football announcers do. Rodeo announcers introduce contestants as they enter the arena and provide some basic information about the individuals, such as their age, current standings in the event, past accomplishments and sometimes a bit of personal information, as well. In order to be successful, a rodeo announcer needs to have an excellent speaking voice, enthusiasm for the sport of rodeo and a good working knowledge of the rules governing each event. Many parts of the country have rodeo circuits, and the same announcer travels throughout a two, three or even four state area announcing at rodeos both during the weekends and throughout the week. Those rodeo announcers make a fulltime living. There are also announcing jobs at smaller rodeos, but those are not full-time positions.
Stock Contractor
The sport of rodeo could not exist without the stock contractors who supply calves, bulls and broncos for the cowboys and cowgirls to compete on. Rodeo contractors need to have a thorough knowledge of the animals they work with, including the ability to spot illnesses and injuries quickly. The livelihood of the rodeo stock contractor depends on the health and wellbeing of the horses and cattle under his care. Rodeo contractors also spend a lot of time driving from event to event, so a quality truck and trailer are essential investments for the business. Rodeo stock contractors also need safe and secure places to keep their stock
during the off season, so they need to own or rent a properly with sufficient space and facilities for the care of livestock. Some big stock contractors are able to make supplying rodeos their only careers. Others supplement their income with more traditional ranching activities, including selling young stock and training horses. Some stock contractors also host practice sessions for rodeo contestants, especially during the slower winter season. This gives the contractor a chance to try out some of the younger bucking bulls and calves, while giving rodeo contestants a chance to hone their skills and keep them sharp between competitions
Rodeo Competitor
The cowboys and cowgirls who compete week in and week out do so not only for the money but for the sheer love of the sport as well. Some competitors, especially those at the top levels of rodeo, do make an excellent living, but many others rely on day jobs to see them through and make a part-time living from the sport they love.
Tack Suppliers
Like other sports, the sport of rodeo uses some highly specialized equipment, and the people and companies who supply that equipment are an integral part of the rodeo scene. Barrel racers need to have saddles that are lightweight but very durable. Bronc and bull riders need specially designed saddles and ropes to hold them tight on those bucking animals. Ropers need to have solid lassos and tie straps. Supplying those special pieces of equipment is a difficult job, and the individuals who supply those items need to have an in-depth knowledge of rodeo riders and their needs in order to be successful. If you love to ride and enjoy being around horses, cattle and people, you might want to pursue a career in the rodeo industry. Rodeo is more than a popular entertainment. It is also a big business, and that means some exciting and potentially lucrative opportunities for you.

report too. The result of lying to this employer is they will terminate your job offer. “There are so many background check companies out there now,” cautions Rahm “that many employers are doing thorough background checks on new hires, so job hunters definitely need to use integrity in creating their resume.”
No Experience Necessary!
Mistake # 4 Missing KEYWORDS Many baby boomers apply online but they fail to understand how applicant tracking software works. Some companies may have sophisticated software installed and others may have a more basic tracking system that they use. And every employer is dependent on the human being who thinks up and types in the keywords on the job surrounding that search. So your best bet is to include the most important work tasks for your job into the resume and be sure that related words for the field are in the resume too so that you will pop up.
Are you passionate about helping others? Don’t miss this opportunity to find career success and fulfillment while you help people reach their highest level of independence!
Direct Support Professionals
Mistake #5 No Technology Skills Older workers often don’t have a slew of computer skills or maybe you do. How would the employer know if you fail to include them on your resume? This can be a place to shine if you have extra skills beyond the basics. Being an expert user in Excel or Project is worth noting. Mention fabulous creative skills using PowerPoint, or blogging skills using WordPress. Maybe you can utilize Adobe’s creative suite. Don’t forget to mention experience working with databases. We assume you are able to use WORD and Outlook. None of these? Then get to the library or a community college and start taking classes.
Not only will you see positive results of your work every day, but you will have an opportunity for professional development and advancement to positions of greater responsibility.

GENERAL
Mistake #6 Bad Formatting Most baby boomers simply cram too much into their resume using an outdated style. Writing in only paragraphs is a very dated resume style that definitely screams you are very old-fashioned. Most of your work experience should be written in bullets as these are concise and can convey your message in the briefest way possible. Employers need to be able to clearly read the resume. Keep the font size to a 12. Don’t use tables in creating the resume content as some software cannot scan them leaving that section of your resume blank. Don’t make a long list of skills competencies as that is also a more dated style. Demonstrate your abilities inside your experience in the skills you used and the results you have achieved. Lastly, but a point that always must be said, PROOF CAREFULLY!!!! Making these changes are the key steps to helping you stay marketable in today’s workplace. ZERO PERCENT INTEREST?
EXPLAINING THE ENVELOPES
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
I know you’re against financing purchases. However, is it okay to finance things like furniture at zero percent interest?
I’ve listened to you for a little while, but I was wondering about the envelope system you recommend. How does it work?
Detrick
Danielle
Dear Detrick,
Dear Danielle,
We just finished an extensive study of more than 10,000 millionaires. Not a single one of these folks said they became rich by borrowing money to buy things at zero percent interest. Since none of those millionaires gave credit for their wealth to zero percent interest financing, and since we know banks charge interest on loans, how is it you think these people are loaning money at “zero percent interest?”
Don’t let the word “system” intimidate you. It’s just grandma’s oldfashioned, common sense way of budgeting money.
Is it possible the pricing of the item has the interest rate built into it? I think the chances of that are pretty high. If not that, companies offering this kind of financing have very accurate and highly researched data that tells them the vast majority of people who take out zero-percent loans don’t pay off the loans in the specified period of time. Do you know what happens if you don’t live up to the terms of those contracts? It becomes a regular loan, and they back charge you for the interest.
Back in the day, many people were paid in cash at their jobs. Then, they would take the money home and divide it up into different envelopes. The envelopes held cash for different categories in their budgets—food, clothes, rent, and other bills and such. When a particular envelope was empty they stopped buying that item, because the money budgeted for that category was gone. If you wanted a dress, but the clothing envelope was empty, you didn’t buy a dress that month. It’s just a simple cash system that, combined with doing a written monthly budget, will help keep you from overspending! —Dave
So, on average you’re paying for it all. I don’t know why you’d want to play with snakes, Detrick. Snakes bite, and some of them can kill you. Avoid debt like the plague. It destroys your most powerful wealthbuilding tool—your income. —Dave
