PRE-PLANNING EXPLAINED

QUIT JOB FOR SCHOOL?

Dear Dave, My grandmother passed away a week ago. She was 98, and I know both she and my grandfather had pre-paid for their funerals in 2004. However, there were outstanding costs of $1,500 with the funeral services we had to pay out of pocket, because she had outlived the insurance policy attached to the pre-payment plan. I know you say it’s always better to pre-plan, not pre-pay, for a funeral. Can you refresh my understanding of this?

My wife and I have $72,000 in debt from student loans and a car loan.

We’re trying to pay off our debt using the debt snowball system, and we each make about $45,000 a year. She’s a teacher, and she’s planning on going back to school for her master’s degree, but she’s thinking about quitting her job to do this. She’ll be able to make more money with the additional education, and she would only be unemployed for two years.

The degree program will cost us $2,000 out of pocket per semester for two years. Does this sound like a good idea?

Dear Chris,

Let’s use a round figure, and say the cost of a funeral is $10,000. What would $10,000 grow to 25 years from now if it were invested in a good mutual fund?

Now, juxtapose that number with the increase in the cost of a funeral over that time. The average inflation rate of consumer-purchased items is around four percent. So, the cost of funerals, on average, has risen about four percent a year. By comparison, you could’ve invested that money, and it would’ve grown at 10 or 12 percent in a good mutual fund.

There’s no reason for your wife to quit her job to make this happen. Lots of people — especially teachers — hold down their jobs and go back to school to further their education. I’m not sure trying to make it on one income when you’re that deep in debt is a good idea.

Now understand, I’m not knocking folks who are in the funeral business. But lots of businesses that provide these services realize more margin in selling pre-paid policies than they do in caskets. In other words, they don’t make as much money selling the casket as they do selling a pre-paid policy on the casket.

Do you understand my reasoning? If we knew the exact date she pre-paid, and how much she pre-paid, that figure invested in a good mutual fund would be a whole lot more than the cost of a reasonable funeral. It’s the same principle behind the reason I advise folks to not pre-pay college, or just about anything else, that’s likely far into the future. The money you could’ve made on the investment is a lot more than the value of pre-paying. Pre-planning, on the other hand, is a great idea for many things — including funerals.

Dear Dave,

Whatever you do, don’t borrow more money to make this happen. Cash flow it, or don’t do it. We’re talking about $8,000 total, and you’ve got $72,000 in debt hanging over your heads already. My advice would be to wait until you’ve got the other debt knocked out, then save up and pay cash for school. You could slow down your debt snowball, and use some of that to pay for school, but I’d hate to see you lose the momentum you have when it comes to getting out of debt.

The choice is yours, but don’t tack on anymore student loan debt. I know her income will go up with a master’s degree, so from that standpoint it’s a good thing to do. But if you do a good thing a dumb way, it ends up being dumb!

it involves outbound calling instead of inbound, and I’m scared of cold calling. I am more of an inside customer service sales person. I have always taken inbound calls from clients but I think I could learn. I have thought a lot about this position, and I think I will have to pass. Thanks for your advice!

A: When companies look for outbound professional sales people, they are looking for bold, confi dent individuals. You would be miserable if you were afraid to make those initial calls. Many people are more comfortable if they just answer a call rather than calling. The best way to decide is to think about going to a party where you know only one person. Does that give you a chill? Then this is not the right job for you. Pass. If instead, you talk to people in line at the grocery and chit chat with people in the elevator, you would more than likely like a pure sales job.

Which Is Worse: A Bad Job or No Job?

You might think there’s nothing worse than being unemployed. Not only do you feel like you’re not contributing and using your talents, you’re also not making any money, which is stressful and even frightening as the bills pile up around you. Your self-esteem might start to drop when you can’t find work, and you get anxious as that gap in your resume widens. How are you going to explain that when you finally get an interview? At some point during unemployment, you think, “I’ll take any job right now. Even a bad one.”

Bad jobs in the construction, engineering, or environmental industries can share some of the following characteristics: •

An unsafe working environment.

•

A manager or supervisor who is indecisive, manipulative, unavailable, or bad at communicating. This article notes that people who make bad bosses in the construction industry play favorites and don’t offer employees a path toward professional development and career advancement.

•

Low pay.

•

Monotonous, unchallenging tasks.

•

A heavy workload.

•

Lack of clear expectations for the job.

•

Lack of job security or not enough hours of work.

While everyone has a different level of tolerance for workplace politics and job demands, these characteristics, alone or in combination, can leave an employee stressed, disheartened, anxious, and frustrated. At the end of a long day of being micromanaged, overworked, or underappreciated, employees in bad jobs go home tired, unhappy, and unfulfilled. This mental drain can start to impact their personal lives, as well.

While unemployment carries its fair share of stress, we point out a distinct opportunity that a bad job rarely offers: “Unemployment is stressful, but it still leaves room for possibilities. When you’re unemployed, you focus all of your efforts on finding a fulfilling position. Yet, when you’re working a dead-end job, you’re so depleted at the end of the day it’s difficult to begin thinking about the future... “

Not so fast.

In 2011, CNN reported on in a study, which indicated a surprising trend: “’Moving from unemployment to a poor-quality job offered no mental health benefit, and in fact was more detrimental to mental health than remaining unemployed,’ says the lead author of the study, Peter Butterworth, Ph.D.”

With unemployment, you have time and energy to devote to perfecting your skills and finding a good job, a job where you feel challenged, where your work is appreciated, and where you can move forward in your career.

If you’re already in a bad job, the fear of unemployment can turn that bad job into a trap.

You might be hesitant to leave it, preferring “the devil you know” to the uncertainty of being without a job.

ABC News recognized this trap and offered a few tips for making the best of that bad situation: •

Try to improve your relationship with your boss.

•

Ask for new assignments.

•

Don’t engage in office or construction site gossip.

And, the most important tip of all: “Do one thing every day to find a new job.” Prevent your bad job from becoming a soul-sucking trap by being proactive about finding a better one.

If you are currently unemployed, take a deep breath and remember the good thing about it: you’ve got time. Use that time wisely to hone your skills, perfect your resume, meet new people, and find your ideal job. The paycheck might seem to make a bad job worth it, especially if it’s been a while since you had a steady income, but you have to consider the toll it takes on your health and well-being.

Whether you find yourself unemployed or in the middle of a bad job, work to better the situation. Having a game plan is empowering, and when you follow the steps, you’ll find your way toward that better job.

the One Trick that will Land You the Job How can you stand out against the crowd of other job applicants? What can you do to make an impression on the person that you just interviewed? Why not do something that over half of your competitors never do? Send a thank you note to the person you spoke to earlier today.

Sending a thank you note shows that you are serious about your job search and that you really want to land that job you applied for. Furthermore, data from CareerBuilder shows that 22% of hiring managers won’t consider a candidate who doesn’t send a thank you note because they believe it shows a lack of follow-through and commitment to the job.

Thank you notes also give you the opportunity to mention anything that you may have left out of the interview. You can elaborate on important details that you think you should’ve mentioned earlier. You can also use it to reiterate your important skills that are essential to the job.

Of course, you want to customize your thank you letter as much as possible Crafting a generic one that says “Thanks for the interview.

I look forward to hearing back,” reads like a message you just copied and pasted and send to every other interview. You should let the interviewer know how important the job is to you and why your skills are the ones that will make you the best candidate.

You should already be preparing your thank you note during your interview. When the time comes to ask questions to the interviewer, you should ask questions that will provide you answers that you can then incorporate into your follow-up letter. For example, some good questions you could ask are “What are the three biggest strengths you think someone would need to succeed in this position?” or “What is the biggest issue facing your department and how would I be in a position to help?” Make sure to take notes when you get answers so that you can refer back to them when writing your thank you FEBRUARY 9, 2018 50letter.

Here’s an example template you can use for an email:

Lastly, I’ve been told that my [skill 3] skills are impeccable due to the times where I’ve done [task].

You also mentioned that your department is currently having a lot of trouble with [problem]. If I were accepted for this position, my proficiency in [relevant skills] would help tremendously.

Feel free to tailor the above template as much as you want to suit your needs. However, you probably don’t want to go more than four paragraphs. As nice as it would be to stuff your numerous accomplishments into your resume, no hiring manager is going to want to read an essay. On the other hand, making it too short will tell the hiring manager that you simply have nothing to offer or say.

Make sure to send the thank you note within 24 hours of the interview while you are still fresh in the interviewer’s memory. Don’t send it right away. Wait at least four or five hours before sending it. If you have work on the same day, make sure to send it after you get off of work. If you send it during work hours, that will tell the interviewer exactly how you spend the time in which you should be working.

Email letters are the most common and convenient, but hand-written notes will really show that you’re going the extra mile. Make sure that your handwriting is neat and legible as a sloppy looking letter will probably not help you get the position that you want.

Handwritten letters should be addressed and sent the same day as the interview as they will likely take a few days to arrive in the mail.

The art of writing the perfect thank you note takes time and practice, but the effort is always well worth it in the end. Sending a thank you note can make or break the whole interview process, and getting it right can land you the job that you want. Make it a habit to always send thank you notes after an interview. You will find that your chances of success will increase monumentally.

Metal Fume

Fever

Metal fume fever is a flu-like illness that is caused by inhaling zinc oxide fumes or dust caused by welding, brazing, or cutting galvanized metal. High-temperature zinc coating processes and brass-pouring processes also present risks. A metal worker who notices that his general feeling of poor health improves when he is away from his job for a few days may be suffering from metal fume fever.

Other metals, including manganese and copper, can also cause metal fume fever. Iron, aluminum, and most simple steels will not cause this condition. Since galvanized metal is widely used by the industry, there’s a good chance that most welders will experience metal fume fever at some point in their work life.

Recognizing Symptoms of Metal Fume Fever

Metal fume fever is often misdiagnosed as the flu, with similar symptoms including gastrointestinal upset, weakness, low-grade fever, chills, thirst, headache, joint pains, muscle aches, dry throat, coughing, and fatigue. With severe overexposure, the patient may notice a sweet, metallic taste in his mouth. The symptoms usually appear in a matter of a few hours after the initial exposure, and will disappear on their own without treatment in a couple of days.

Employees who are regularly exposed to metal fumes may become briefly tolerant of them, only to find that when they are away from the workplace a few days (such as over the weekend or during vacation) they may experience symptoms of metal fume fever upon returning to work. For this reason, metal fume fever is also known as Monday fever.

Treatment for Metal Fume Fever

Treatment for metal fume fever includes removing the patient from the toxic environment, bed rest, and OTC pain relievers for symptom relief. Symptoms may begin to dissipate rapidly once the patient is removed from the metal fumes. The patient may feel well enough to return to work the next day, but it may take three or four days to feel fully recovered.

Tips for Preventing Metal Fume Fever

Employees who are at potential risk of metal fume fever can take proactive steps to protect their health by keeping their head out of clouds of smoke and fumes, and using appropriate safety gear and adequate ventilation.

Employers need to protect their employees’ health by alerting them to the potential illness of metal fume fever, and by observing OSHA regulations regarding respirator use and adequate ventilation in work spaces. When an employee is exposed to hot metal gasses and potential oxygen deficiency within a confined space, a coworker should be stationed outside the unit to keep an eye on the worker within and come to his aid if needed. In larger areas, movable ventilation hoods or ducts should be placed as close to the welder’s work area as possible. Observers and bystanders must also be protected from the fumes.

While metal fume fever may resolve itself with no lasting effects, long-term exposure to metal gasses and dust can lead to irreversible damage to the central nervous system, respiratory system, and vital organs. Welders and others who regularly work with hot metals should have a yearly physical exam by a doctor who knows the VOL. 23 ISSUE 1127 patient’s work history.
