Five Ways to Give Yourself a Raise in 2019
By Rachel Cruze
Everyone starts out a new year with the best intentions. We’re going to lose weight, or eat better, or work out more. I don’t know about you, but I’m as guilty as anyone when it comes to shelling out a bunch of money for a workout class and then quitting by Valentine’s Day. One of the biggest areas where people miss an opportunity to be intentional is in their personal finances. Seventy-eight percent of Americans aren’t getting ahead because they live paycheck to paycheck. Money problems remain a top reason that married couples fight. And one in five of you reading this aren’t putting any money into savings. Instead, Americans are maxing out credit cards, making hefty car payments, and are up to their eyeballs in debt. It’s the same story year after year. So why not make 2019 the year you start winning with money? Here are five ways to give yourself a raise this year:
2.
Cut back on your monthly subscriptions. Take a look at your online subscriptions. Is there anything you need to cancel? Maybe an online fitness class you only use once every three months? That cash could be an extra something in your pocket! Or can you go down a level to save money? For example, Hulu has three price points—in the cheaper version, you’ll just see a few more ads. Make the “unsubscribe” button your new BFF. Set aside 30 minutes to sift through your email inbox. Open up all those promotional emails tempting you with sales and special offers, scroll to the bottom and click “unsubscribe.” Once you stop getting the emails, you won’t be tempted to spend so much money on things you weren’t even looking for to begin with.
3.
Create monthly financial resolutions. This may sound overwhelming, but quick wins are important. Write down 12 financial goals you’d like to achieve by the end of 2019, and assign one to each month. Maybe you want to pay off a credit card by May, or save $500 by September. You’ll be more likely to reach your goals if you keep them simple, make them tangible, and believe you can do it.
4.
Transition your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. The traditional IRA works on the “save money now, pay later” system. In this system, you don’t pay taxes on the money you contribute now, but you will have to pay taxes when you take the money out. A better choice is the Roth IRA. With this retirement savings account, you pay taxes up front. That way, you’re not taxed when you withdraw in retirement. Translation: a Roth IRA lets you grow your money tax-free, saving you thousands in the long run.
5.
Create sinking funds. Life happens. Come up with a list of things you might need extra cash for—things like holidays, birthdays, weddings, new tires, home repairs, and more. Save for those things using sinking funds.
For example, let’s say you want to save $400 to travel to your friend’s June wedding. Divide $400 by the number of months you have left to save: $400 divided by six months is $67. You’ll need to save $67 per month in order to dance the night away at that wedding. If you’re looking for an easy-to-use, free budgeting app, I recommend EveryDollar. This app will help you make a plan for your money. And they have a fund feature built right into the app! If you’re serious about making a fresh start with your money, these tips will get you set up financially for 2019. This time next year, you could be in an entirely different situation. So, make 2019 the year you start winning with money! Source:

KEY SKILLS A
IO AT N
Needed TOM In Our U Age of
By Shirley Taylor
Horizon Scanning One of these key skills is what Graeme calls horizon scanning, or "what if" thinking. This is the ability to look at the future, to see what's coming and to develop scenarios. A lot of people have the attitude of wanting to protect the systems that already exist. However, leaders today envisage a different future from one that appears inevitable given current systems.
Part 1: Key Insights From The Future Leaders Summit After being a speaker and corporate trainer for three decades, I recently ventured into the virtual world to host my first online event - the Future Leaders Summit. With 31 amazing guest speakers, the Summit attracted thousands of attendees from almost 100 different countries. And wow! I certainly learned a lot! And now I would love to share some of my key insights with you.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Shirley_Taylor/293003
What an honor it was to interview some of the top global leadership experts and bestselling authors as they shared cutting-edge information about the future of work, the changes and challenges we are all facing, and essential skills needed for the future. With such a diverse range of speakers and topics, my aim was to inspire existing leaders, new leaders, potential leaders, entrepreneurs and solopreneurs, in fact anyone who wants to grow professionally and personally. In part 1, I'm sharing some key insights from my interview with Graeme Codrington, a renowned futurist, researcher and professional speaker. When I spoke to Graeme, it was easy to sense his great passion for understanding the intersection of people and technology.
Where will the 2020s take us? In my discussion with Graeme, he shared fascinating information from his company's research about where the 2020s may take us. He told me the key shift in mindset for us as humans is to look at the tasks that we want machines to do. Here's the good news: About 30 or 40% of what people do cannot be done by machines. And even better news:
There are several key skills that computers are not going to develop any time soon. 22 JANUARY 11, 2019
Creativity and Intuition Another key skill is the ability to come up with fresh ideas, and Graeme said this is still something that we don't fully understand. There's a science behind this, but it still relies a lot on gut feel, or intuition. In practical terms, this involves knowing when it's appropriate to work "outside the rule book". Human skills are needed in knowing when rules and procedures aren't working, and then find a creative, intuitive solution.
Personal Intelligence I like the term Personal Intelligence that Graeme uses. It's an interesting twist on the standard term that we all know, Emotional Intelligence. The focus here is really about knowing yourself. This includes being conscious of your strengths and comfortable with your weaknesses. It's about being very aware of what you're good at and what you're not good at, and acknowledging that's why you have a team around you to compensate. The best organizations in the 2020s will have leaders and people who are very in tune and comfortable with who they are. I wasn't surprised that Graeme hit on the importance of knowing ourselves as leaders and recognizing that we have a team around us, because this is something that many of my Summit guests talked about too. So do look out for part 2 when I'll be sharing some of the key insights from my interview with Mark Sanborn, who is passionate about sharing that we don't need a title to be a leader. I hope you enjoyed learning some of the key insights from my interview with Graeme Codrington. I would love you to share your thoughts about some of the key skills you feel will be essential for us to future-proof our careers in our automation age. Here's to your success! VOL. 24 ISSUE 1174

How to Manage a
WAREHOUSE This article is courtesy of Wiki-How, and has been compiled over time with the aid of Wiki-How editors and those in the Warehousing industry, both managers and employees alike. If you are working in a warehouse and have something to add to this article, visit https://www.wikihow.com/ Manage-a-Warehouse and continue the conversation.
that they have received adequate training. Many injuries arise from improper material handling, so your safety program should place a heavy focus on the proper ways to pick up, reach for, and carry heavy objects. You should also include a section on loading-dock safety, including limiting the height of stacked pallets and keeping the dock area free of obstructions.
When managing a warehouse, your duties and responsibilities may range from supervising and evaluating employees to things like shipping, purchasing, receiving, inventory control, storage, and distributing merchandise.[1] Running an efficient, safe, and productive warehouse is a multi-faceted job, but there are some guidelines you can follow to ensure you do a great job while protecting your employees and your merchandise.
You may wish to develop a safety program specifically tailored to your company. Work with human resources to develop training materials.
Prioritizing Warehouse Safety 1. Keep the warehouse clean, neat, and organized.[2] Aisles and walkways should be free of spills and debris. Do not allow boxes or merchandise to be left in walkways where people might trip. Mark all pedestrian walkways, vehicle lanes, and inclines with highly visible floor markings. • • •
Make sure to keep cables or suspended equipment from hanging over pedestrian walkways or vehicle lanes. Take advantage of wall space to add storage lockers or hooks. Manage cords on the floor with tape, or cover them with cord covers.
2. Make sure all areas are properly lit. Bright lights will promote alertness and workplace safety by keeping your employees awake and aware of their surroundings. Make sure light bulbs are replaced immediately when they go out and that there are no dark areas in the warehouse. 3. Train employees on general warehouse safety practices. All warehouse employees should attend training on warehouse standards JANUARY 11, 2019 and confirm in writing 46safety
ators are properly trained to use only designated lanes when moving such equipment around the warehouse. 6. Do regular safety checks. Make sure everything is up-to-date. Plan regular vehicle, machinery, equipment and loading-dock examinations and maintenance in order to keep them in proper working order. •
Report, replace or repair any damaged or missing safety features. Lights, reverse sensors, and warning signals should be tested on vehicles. Test repaired equipment to make sure it is safe before returning it to the warehouse floor. Immediately attend to any reported safety hazards.
Consider online training, which may allow you to archive training materials (videos and print-outs) so they can be viewed many times.
•
4. Make sure employees that use mechanical equipment are properly trained. An employee operating warehouse equipment -- forklifts, mechanical loaders, electric stackers, lifters, shrink wrappers, etc. must be fully trained in their use and certified if necessary.
Managing Warehouse Employees
•
•
Make sure these employees are trained to identify hazards, respond to them quickly, follow safety protocols, and take special care in the loading-dock area. If certification is required to operate vehicles or equipment (such as a forklift), you must verify that employees have received this training.
5. Enforce safety regulations. Such rules are designed to avoid employee injuries that could deprive you of skilled labor. Enforce safety regulations by placing reminder signs where appropriate and punishing employees seen regularly disregarding safety rules. Do not make exceptions for anyone violating the rules. Educate your employees on appropriate protective gear such as hard hats, steeltoed boots, safety goggles, and heavy gloves. Make sure forklift or other machinery oper-
1. Communicate clearly with your employees. To run a successful warehouse operation, you'll need to listen and respond to your workers. Consider implementing an open-door policy for any employees with questions or concerns. You can also allow workers to make anonymous comments or suggestions via a comments box. This will allow you to deal with employee complaints before they become serious problems. 2. Interview qualified candidates. Look for potential employees who conduct themselves professionally and are skilled enough for the position. Once you have several applicants for the position, make a hiring decision based on their applications and interviews. Involve the appropriate supervisor in the decision. He or she may have good insight in picking the right applicant. 3. Train new employees. Once a new employee has been hired, you may need to help them get started. This may involve supervising their training or performing parts of their training yourself. You may want to show them around the warehouse andVOL. introduce them to other supervisors 24 ISSUE 1174
with whom they may be working. Make yourself available in case new hires have questions while they are settling in.
Make sure your warehouse is easily navigable by clearly labeling aisles and product groups.
Retraining may also be required, as processes within the warehouse's organization may change. Make sure to schedule time for retraining each employee if this is the case.
For example, let's say your warehouse stocks computer components. You have everything from memory and processors to accessories like keyboards and webcams. However, the items you move most are replacement power cords. In this case, you should keep your stock of power cords closer to the loading area and easily within reach at waist or shoulder height so that they can be moved quickly and easily. This area should be labeled clearly as "power cords" or something similar.
You can also cross-train employees (train them in more than one role) so that if one employee is ill or fired, others can temporarily take their place. 4. Give feedback and performance reviews. Meet with all employees regularly and review their performance. This is an opportunity for growth an encouragement. Talk to the employee about his strengths and reward excellent performance and behavior. Discuss ways in which the employee can improve, address any weaknesses or bad behavior, and make a plan for improvement. You may also ask supervisors for input regarding employee performance. Make sure you follow up with any corrective actions. 5. Fire employees when necessary. Letting employees go is never easy, but a good manager recognizes when doing so is necessary. The important thing is that the manager fire the employee in a professional manner and do the firing him or herself. Consider firing an employee if they consistently ignore safety procedures, show up late for work regularly, skip work, show up intoxicated to work, fail to complete tasks in a timely manner, or otherwise disrupt warehouse operations on a regular basis.
2. Make picking more eďŹƒcient. Picking, or gathering products into shipments, can take up a large amount of your workers' time. However, you can make changes to your picking process to speed it up. For example, if you regularly ship large orders to a few key customers, consider organizing pick lists so that similar items are grouped together. For smaller orders to a large number of clients, you can set it up so that the pick lists are grouped, and the actual products are divided at a later stage. Imagine that your computer-components warehouse regularly ships small numbers of your power cords to a large number of electronics stores. Try organizing your picking lists so that the total number of power cords is taken from the power cord aisle at one time and then separated before shipping. This will avoid having your pickers go back and forth all day. Some managers choose to implement a system of color-coding on picking lists that can either organize items by warehouse area or by customer priority, where certain
colors indicate high-volume clients. 3. Establish an inventory-management system. Ideally, any movement of an item should be recorded with all relevant information, including time, product status, and product code. An effective management system can be implemented through the use of RFID tags or barcodes linked to an inventory-management-software program. Make sure that all of your employees are thoroughly trained in the use of this system. In some cases this system will have to comply with overall company policy. Make sure to learn this policy so that you can correctly implement it in warehouse operations. 4. Do a visual inspection of storage areas regularly. Walk around and make sure storage areas are neatly maintained and contain the appropriate products. Use only designated areas for merchandise storage. Make certain employees have clearly marked these areas and are storing only the specified items according to the markings. Check pallets for damage, and make sure staff know how to load pallets properly for stability. Record inspection dates and any damage you find. Start the repair process or discard items as needed. 5. Meet regularly with key sta. Organize monthly or weekly meetings with important upper-level staff members. These include managers and supervisors of warehouse inventory, storage, and purchasing. Continued on page 48
6. Keep up with employment laws. Workplace and compensation regulations change frequently, so it is important to monitor changes and implement them as soon as possible. Make sure to look out for changes in state or federal laws that could have anything to do with your warehouse or employees. You may be able to follow these changes more closely by subscribing to a relevant trade magazine.
Overseeing All Warehouse Operations 1. Establish a consistent and eďŹƒcient organization system. Your primary goal as a warehouse manager is to ensure that the right products go where they need to go when they need to go there. To save employees time in searching for products, create a logical organizational system that can be easily interpreted and used. For starters, you should place the most-moved products in an easily accessible area such as the center of the warehouse. Additionally, group products that are often shipped together near each other. Reviewing Delivery and Pick Up Operations
Coordinating loading and unloading means trying to schedule the arrival and departure of trucks in such a way that they will not have to wait while other trucks are being loaded or unloaded. Make sure that your docks are constantly being used and that there are never more trucks present than available spaces. You should also focus on limiting arrivals such that your unloading team has adequate time to unpack and sort the arriving items before more arrive. If they arrive faster than that, it creates a "bottleneck" that leads to costly inefficiencies, not to mention employee stress and frustration. 2. Arrange employee schedules so there are enough handlers available to load and unload trucks. This may require planning for additional employees to be present for large shipments. 3. Organize your receiving process. Assign enough merchandise checkers and receivers to each shift to compare invoices with merchandise received and to check the condition of the merchandise on arrival. Make sure your staff knows what to do with a damaged shipment. Ensure that received products are quickly shelved to avoid discrepancies between received shipments and what is actually on the shelves. Give your receiving team enough space to work. This ensures that recently received products are not mixed up with existing product. 4. Control shipment quality. Implement controls to check the quality of products before they leave the warehouse. Organize a system such that defective or incorrectly packed items are checked and removed from the shipment before it leaves the warehouse. This can help prevent costly returns. Put an experienced employee whom you trust in charge of quality control. Their experience can save your warehouse a good amount of money. 5. Track your shipments. Your customers will want to know exactly where their products are and when they will be arriving. This will also help you deal quickly with missing packages. Be sure to implement shipment tracking with whatever shipping service you use, and regularly check their tracking accuracy.11, 2019 48forJANUARY

Your Job Pays a Salary
But How Much is it Costing You? For one thing, a job often determines the location where you live. If rent in the city of your work is $2000 a month, that takes a serious hit to your take home pay. A job in another city might pay less, but the local cost-of-living might also be less. When factoring in how much you pay just to live somewhere, you may actually end up with more take home pay with a lower-paying job. Your job also requires that you get there. For some, this means taking a train or a bus. For others, this means driving a car. Some people would drive a car regardless of their job, but if you can live well without a car and only get one to get to work, know that the car is taking an average of $10,000 a year from your take home pay to own, maintain, insure and take to the pump. A job that gives you take home pay of $40,000 is comparable to a job that pays $30,000 but allows you to commute in an alternate manner.
Your salary might seem like a large number, even after income taxes, but your real take-home pay might be smaller than you think. While the main reason we take jobs is to have a steady income, a job might actually be costing you more money than is worth.
Jobs also give you added expenses. When you work full time, you have less time to take care of your basic needs. Most of the things you pay for, whether in the form of transportation, restaurants, convenience food and city gyms, meet needs you could provide for in a cheaper manner if you weren't on a time constraint. If you weren't on a tight schedule, you could experience the benefits of all of these things at a similar or higher quality.
For instance, you eat better if you cook healthy food from scratch, garden for your own produce and walk out to the woods every once in a while to go hiking. Someone with a full time schedule doesn't have the time and therefore has to replace meeting these basic needs with spending money for quick solutions. A person living on the poverty line who only works 20 hours a week is much better off than a person who works full time and commutes every day. That is because a person with a shorter work schedule has more time to devote to cooking healthy meals from scratch, exercising, and biking or walking instead of paying for transportation. Stressful jobs also take a toll on one's health. Even low stress jobs that require long periods of sitting lead to a multitude of health problems. Whether your job insures you or not, you will pay the price, not only with your health and comfort, but also with medical bills, co-pays and reduced lifespan and years viable to work. We always talk about salary or take-home pay, but we rarely talk about how much you have to spend just to keep a job. A seemingly large salary can often distract you from the secondary costs associated with having a job.

DON’T PLAY THE GAME
PAID IN FULL?
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
How do you feel about timeshares, and the free trips and dinners they offer as part of their sales pitches? Is it possible to win with these things?
MI’ve been late on a credit card bill several times, and it was turned over to a collection agency. They have offered a couple of different payment options. If I agree to one of these, does that mean the original creditor gets paid, too?
Dan Dear Dan, In my opinion, timeshares are a complete waste of time and money. Lots of folks go into this kind of thing believing they’ll play the game and win. They think they’ll get a vacation weekend and other free stuff, then just say “no” when the time comes. The problem is, most people aren’t as tough a sell as they think. Besides, do you really want to waste a weekend of your life letting some pushy salesperson twist your arm? That’s not my idea of fun. As a whole, timeshares have an incredibly high dissatisfaction rate. It’s almost impossible to find anyone who’s happy they bought into one, and there are good reasons for this. Why would you pay thousands of your hard-earned dollars for a tiny place you may or may not get a chance to visit once a year? Add to this the fact that you have no equity in the place, and you’re stuck paying ongoing maintenance fees.
Carter Dear Carter, A collection agency either owns the debt outright, or they’re directly representing the credit card company in these kinds of situations. It’s not unusual for things to be handled this way when someone has defaulted on a loan. Unless you have the cash to make good on the debt outright, I’d go ahead and accept whichever deal makes the most sense for you and your current financial situation. You’ve already got a mark against you on your credit report for having this turned over to collections, so an indication of settlement on a credit card you defaulted on is really no big deal. But here’s my best piece of advice—stop using credit cards! —Dave
My advice? Don’t take a chance playing the game, Dan. There are much better uses for your time and money! —Dave
