T
he great news this year is that so many people are getting phone calls from employers or recruiters. The bad news is that many individuals are calling me for help when they can’t seem to turn those inquiries into face-to-face interviews. Of course I do get clients making appointments before in-person interviews because they really want the job and need to do their best. These people are afraid because too many people are getting a “NO” from the employer they talk with about a job. You need to review your resume and your background to be ready for any objections or concerns an employer may have. I’ve done some troubleshooting for you. Here are some of the typical issues that come up and how you can solve them.
#1 Job hopping Does your resume show that you have been a job hopper and
moved around from job to job frequently? That will be a concern. Prepare an answer for that situation as it’ll be one of the very first things the employer is going to ask about. Be careful about how much negative information you offer. Explaining about an awful boss won’t vindicate you but will reflect badly on you in the eyes of the employer. Being offered promotions and being contacted by employers are good reasons to move on.
#2 Gaps in Employment The employer simple wants to know if you quit, were fired or laid
off and what you did during that time when you weren't working. Don’t worry unless it was several years. Then you may have taken a parenting gap or you were off looking for work. Do talk about the skills you worked on during this time. Maybe you volunteered and you can mention the computer skills or budgeting skills you acquired. Did you go back to school or take some refresher courses?
Mention those. Everyone should discuss how they used this time to read books, trade journals, and industry blogs to remain current in the field.
#3 Answering Questions Wrong Employers will not hire just anyone these days. You must convince
them you are the right person so answering questions effectively is key. In my book, 60 Seconds and You’re Hired I answer over 120 interview questions. Briefly, let’s review some of the ones you must be prepared for. Have a good answer for why you are leaving your job or why you were let go. Be honest but succinct. Expect to be asked about your greatest weakness and your top strength. Your weakness needs to be something that will not impede your doing the job. A good answer is often something you did poorly but have worked on improving and now do well. Situational or behavioral questions are often the hardest for most people to be ready for. These questions need you to follow this process: • • • • •
clearly explain where you were working state who was involved in the situation define what was the problem clarify what you did to resolve the problem note what were the results of your efforts
Write out your work examples as these are the correct way to answer behavioral questions. Roleplaying with a career counselor for professional feedback or working with a friend to practice answering questions before you talk to an employer will help you to improve.

Ways to make your job search a full-time job: • Stick to a daily schedule. Create a to-do list and cross them off as you go; this gives you a sense of accomplishment even during down-times. Check job boards daily and see if any new jobs were posted, in case your alert notification service missed anything. • Send printed resumes in the mail. Few people do this any more, which is why it is effective for you. • Target companies you want to work for and know where you can add value, then network or market yourself into an interview.

• Contact recruiters and temporary work agencies. Recruiters work for you and the good ones do not charge you to help you find employment. However, do not bug recruiters constantly. If they need someone with your skills, they will call you. They might not have an opening right away that fits your qualifications, but if they do, they will call you. • Only apply to the openings that fit within your realm. Recruiters do get the "jack of all trades" candidates who, in actuality, only fit the bill for one or two jobs at most. So be aware of your resume submissions. Do not market yourself as a "jack of all trades" or a "fast learner". Market yourself as an expert in a certain industry/field. Hiring managers are not going to figure out where you might fit, they want to know if you fit their immediate need. • Apply to higher positions than your current position. For your next job, why not go from a rankand-file worker to a manager? If you are an exempt or professional worker, set your sights high and become a leader. • Follow the job posting directions and make sure you do what they tell you to do, if you want to apply to their job. They implement rules for a reason. • Read industry magazines. Keep up with trends and developments in your field. • Network with industry experts and other people that can help you find a job and create your own advisory board to consult with when you need information or assistance. • Create an online presence. Sign up for industry blogs, social networking sites and career sites.
• In a worst-case scenario, be flexible to relocating. It is a part of job hunting these days.
Right Place, Right Time...Right Person Right place: Any place can be the right place, so make the most of where ever you are. An interview, career fair, career mixer, even the grocery store can be a networking opportunity that can turn into a new job or career. Right time: It is always the right time. Whether they are hiring or advertising a position or not, network with the company decision makers. Right person: Find the top 10 companies you want to work for and prioritize them. Research the company's senior management on LinkedIn and Google. Contact them via LinkedIn, their company email, or call the company and ask to speak to them directly. If you reach someone who can tell you about what the hiring manager is looking for, ask them: • What are they looking for in a candidate? • What are they definitely not looking for? • What turns them off about a candidate? • Are they having any issues in filling this position? Once you reach the hiring manager, give them your elevator speech. It is very difficult because you are writing (a resume, cover letter or email) or talking to someone you do not know. So it must be customized for the position they are filling!

Strategies to
Attract and Retain
Millennial and Gen Z Employees "The youth of today love luxury. They have bad manners, they disrespect their elders and they prefer chatter in place of exercise." Who do you think said this? This quote is attributed to Socrates in approximately 432 BC. Yes, we have been complaining about the younger generations almost since the beginning of time. However, it's different today. So, unless you are ready to adapt your business strategies to the younger generations who are in the workplace and soon to be entering the workplace, your company could be in big trouble. Let's start with a brief review of the generations and some characteristics of each:
Traditionalists (Silent Generation, Greatest Generation): Born before 1945, this group was raised to "pay their dues," and work their way up through an organization. They were hardworking, fiercely loyal, and trusted authority. They did not expect to be recognized for doing their job, after all, that's what they got paid to do.
Baby Boomers:
Born between 1946 and 1964, Boomers are the generation that the term "workaholic" was coined for. They lived to work and put in the "facetime" necessary to climb the corporate ladder. Their extreme dedication to their career, caused an imbalance in their personal lives, leading to a high divorce rate and an increase in single-parent households.
Generation X:
Born between 1965 and 1980, Gen Xers were the first generation of latchkey children who were raised to be independent. They saw the toll that spending too many hours at the workplace put on their parents, and thus desired more time with their families. This is the generation that introduced the concept of work/life balance. Not only is this the smallest generation, they were also
22
JANUARY 25, 2019
steered away from manufacturing/trade occupations by their parents, thus causing today's large age gap in many plants.
Millennials
(Generation Y): Born between 1981 and 2000, the Millennials now make up the largest percentage of the workplace. Similar in size to the Boomers (75 million Millennials versus 80 million Boomers), just like the Boomers, this group is poised to change business as we know it. They were raised embracing technology, recycling, and initiatives to take care of the planet. They are the most educated of the generations and have to deal with the repayment of large student loans. Because they are used to receiving continuous feedback, they expect the same level of recognition, respect, and relevance they've been ingrained with since their childhood. Serving a mission greater than themselves and making a difference is an important personal initiative for them and they are looking to join organizations that make the world a better place.
Generation Z (iGen): Born after 1996-
2000 (the years get fuzzy when defining both the Millennial and the Next Generation), this group has seen the struggles that Millennials face - "helicopter" parents, high student loan debt, and the negative perception and reputation of being "lazy and entitled." This generation is distancing themselves from Millennials as much as possible. Now that there's an app for everything, Gen Z is used to being part of a "gig" economy. Because they value flexibility, they are much more likely to consider contract work and entrepreneurship. So, how does knowing this information about the five different generations in the workplace affect you and your manufacturing business? By understanding the general traits of each generation, you can learn to accept and appreciate the differences and create a more harmonious workplace.
Here are ten strategies to help you attract and retain both Millennial and Gen Z workers: 1. DEVELOP A CAREER PLAN. For the first ten years of their career, Millennials, on average, will switch jobs four times. They will either switch to different positions within your company, or they'll take their skills elsewhere. By creating a personalized career development plan for all new employees you can give your people opportunities to experience different jobs within the company to see the best fit for their skills. Listen to what employees want in their career and help them achieve their goals. 2. START EARLY. Because Gen Z is not seeing the value in higher education, they may go straight into the workforce. Tapping into this pool of candidates as early as possible may give your organization an advantage over those companies that wait for potential hires to graduate high school or college. Promoting your business through "Manufacturing Day" (first Friday in October) activities is a good way to connect with elementary and middle school children and their parents. 3. BE FLEXIBLE. Offering flexible schedules, opportunities for cross-training and time off to work on charitable projects are benefits that resonate with both groups. Younger generations thrive on life-long learning, career growth, and having a mission, instead of just a job. Continued on page 48 VOL. 24 ISSUE 1176

Careers in social work: Outlook, pay, and more
Elka Torpey, "Careers in social work: Outlook, pay, and more," Career Outlook, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, March 2018.

Mary Green always knew that she wanted a job helping others. During her first year of college, she figured out what that career field would be: social work.
on the area of social work you’re in,” he says. “But I’ve been surprised at how much overlap there is.”
Employment and outlook
In 2016, there were more than 680,000 social workers employed in the United States. As chart 1 shows, the largest number of them specialized in helping children and families or worked in schools. The smallest number worked in the “all other” occupation, which includes job titles such as criminal justice social worker and forensic social worker.
Over the years, Green has been a social worker for a nonprofit organization, a social services department, and a school. “It’s a versatile career,” says Green. “There are lots of different types of jobs.”
PROJECTED NEW JOBS By 2026, the number of social workers is projected to increase to more than 790,000. Over the decade, the occupation of child, family, and school social workers is projected to add the most jobs—about 45,000 of them.
A helping occupation
Social workers help people cope with everyday problems. They may provide services such as advocacy, crisis response, and connecting clients with resources. BLS groups social workers into four types: • Child, family, and school • Healthcare • Mental health and substance abuse • All other social workers Regardless of specialty, social work focuses on the individual in his or her own environment. Zach Landau, whose current job is with a social services call center, has also worked with children and families and with people who have mental health or substance abuse issues. “There are specific nuances, depending JANUARY 25, 2019
The expected addition of 109,700 jobs overall demonstrates a 16-percent growth rate—more than double the 7-percent employment growth projected for all occupations from 2016 to 2026. Rates vary by specialty, but only the “all other” occupation is projected to have average growth (8 percent); employment growth in each of the others is expected to be much faster than the average. OCCUPATIONAL SEPARATIONS Thousands of new job openings are projected from employment growth; however, most openings for social workers are expected to arise from separations—that is, when people leave the occupation to work in another occupation or to exit the labor force. About one-third of the 73,300 social worker separations projected each year, on average, over the 2016–26 decade are expected to be from people leaving the labor force, such as to retire. But the bulk of separations are projected to arise from VOL. 24 ISSUE 1176
people transferring out of social work to other occupations.
FOR MORE INFORMATION
That’s no surprise to workers currently in the field. Social workers deal with people who have had hardships or trauma in their lives, and experiencing this secondhand can take a toll. “People burn out,” says Green. “It just gets too difficult.”
Find additional information about social workers and other community and social service occupations, as well as hundreds of others, in the Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH). For each occupation, OOH profiles describe what workers do, what the job outlook is, how much the pay is, and more.
Landau agrees. “You’re working with people who have all kinds of complex issues,” he says. “Even if something didn’t happen to you, you feel what they’re feeling.”
Data on job-related requirements for social workers are available from the BLS Occupational Requirements Survey program. Detailed employment and wage data—including by industry, state, and local area—are available from the BLS Occupational Employment Statistics program. Visit your state occupational licensing department for specific information on required credentials. A state-by-state licensure guide is available at SocialWorkLicensure.org. Elka Torpey is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS. She can be reached at torpey.elka@bls.gov.
Pay
Social workers had a median annual wage of $46,890, higher than the $37,040 wage for all workers in 2016. Chart 3 shows how wages vary by social worker occupation. These data are for wage and salary workers only and do not include the 2 percent of social workers who were self-employed. A number of factors affect wages in an occupation, including industry and geographic location. Click on a bar in chart 3 to see median annual wages in selected industries with high employment for each social worker occupation.
Percentage of social workers with selected education, training, and experience requirements, 2017
PREPARING FOR A CAREER Social workers typically must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree to enter the occupation. They also may need other credentials, such as a state-issued license or certification, depending on the state and the job. For example, in Wisconsin, where Green works, school social workers must be licensed; licensure requires a master’s degree that includes specific coursework and a practicum. Although Landau doesn't need a graduate degree for his current job, he's enrolled in a social work master's program. He plans to become a licensed clinical social worker, a credential that he hopes will broaden his career options for helping others. “It’s one thing to say you want to make the world a better place, but it’s another to be in the trenches and see people make changes,” says Landau. “It’s challenging, but it’s also very rewarding to see the outcome of the work that you do.” VOL. 24 ISSUE 1176

"Strategies..." Continued from page 22
GENERAL
4. KEEP IT CLEAN. Unfortunately, manufacturing has an image problem. Many younger workers see manufacturing companies as dirty, boring, smoky, dismal places to work. Providing a clean, safe environment with good air quality not only improves worker productivity, morale and retention, it plays a critical role in recruiting manufacturing employees who want to stay with you.
No Experience Necessary!
5. LISTEN UP. Millennials and Gen Z'ers are not necessarily workers who want to punch in, punch out, go home, don't think about work once they leave. They have a lot of energy and want to contribute their ideas. Embrace their unique perspectives, leverage their ideas, and recognize their participation in achieving company goals.
7. PROMOTE SAFETY. Because both Millennials and Gen Z were used to being buckled in a car seat, wearing a safety helmet, and always being kept from harm, they expect the same in the workplace. Convey everything that you are doing - and how you are going beyond - to provide a safe workplace that protects them. 8. INSTILL CONFIDENCE. Millennials do not appreciate feeling like rookies. As the most educated of the generations, they already believe themselves to be leaders. For that reason, they want to be recognized for what they bring to the table and have a desire to confidently contribute from day one. This group likes to learn new skills and technology - encourage them to do so.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Lisa_Ryan/331468
9. TAKE FIELD TRIPS. Expose your employees to industry trends and best practices by taking them or allowing them to attend tradeshows, supplier open houses and demo days. Let your team see new technology for themselves so they can see where the industry is going. 10. OFFER TO MENTOR. Set up mentoring, not reporting, relationships between your employees and their managers or other tenured employees who can show them the ropes. Set expectations so both mentor and mentee know what is expected of them. Schedule frequent check-ins to see how the relationship is working and have a defined period with the option to continue if needed and wanted. When it comes down to it, Millennials and Gen Z workers desire the same standards that all of your employees want - to be treated with respect, acknowledged for their efforts and to feel valued by the organization. However, the rapidly changing workplace means that leadership teams must look at every aspect of their business and make the changes necessary to keep up with the technically savvy, ever multitasking, and time-valuing workforce that is their future. RELATIONSHIPS AND MONEY
FIGHT BACK AGAINST FRAUD
Dear Dave,
Dear Dave,
My father-in-law wants to help us with our mortgage. We’ve been working hard to pay off our home early, and we’ve reduced what we owe to around $35,000. His idea is to pay off the remainder, then let us pay him back over time. In the past, he has loaned us much smaller amounts and everything has worked out fine. What do you think about this?
We recently learned that my wife’s ex-husband used her social security number to establish several credit card accounts. We’ve written and called the credit card companies, and we’re disputing the charges, but is there anything else we can do to protect ourselves and put an end to this?
Brianne Dear Brianne, I’m sure this seems like a winning proposition all the way around. My concern is there’s a big spiritual and emotional issue that has been left out of the equation. The borrower is always slave to the lender, and nowhere is that more true than in a family. I understand, too, you have a solid track record with this kind of thing. But anytime you borrow money from family you’re playing with fire. When you do something like this, especially with such a large amount, the money issue is likely to be a shadow hovering over your relationship. Family get togethers, special events, and holidays will feel different when you’re there with your lender instead of just good old dad. I assume your father-in-law is doing well financially, since he can afford to make this offer. And don’t get me wrong, it’s a very kind and generous offer. If I were in his shoes, I might offer instead to pay off the mortgage as a gift to my son and daughter-in-law for working so hard to attain a goal. But it would be a gift. No strings attached. If you have a nice, stable family, this debt will always be there in the back of your mind. If you have a dysfunctional, control-freak kind of family, it’s going to be right there in front of you constantly. Either way, I don’t think it’s worth the risk —Dave 52 JANUARY 25, 2019
Ken Dear Ken, You bet there is! File a police report immediately, and if possible, have this guy arrested. He has committed criminal fraud, and it’s not something you should take lightly. Also, put a fraud victim alert on your credit bureau reports today. Don’t stop with just alerting the credit card companies about this situation. You should be speaking with and communicating via email—plus snail mail, if necessary—directly with the fraud victim division at every credit card company involved. Make sure they understand this is a denial of responsibility and not simply a dispute. Let them know you’re sorry this happened, but explain that all these charges in your names are the result of a criminal act perpetrated against you. You may have to stand your ground with the credit card companies, because some of them might try to get you to pay it, anyway. Don’t do it! —Dave
