Dave Says BY DAVE RAMSEY
Goals Limiting One Another Dear Dave, My husband and I are currently renting an apartment for $1,200 a month. Together, we bring home about $7,000 a month, and we’d really like to buy a house soon. Right now we have about $10,000 in debt on a boat along with ongoing stable bills, food and upkeep for our three horses. What price range of houses should we look at in our situation? Michelle Dear Michelle, Homeownership is a great goal, but first you two need to clean up your debt and build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. After that, I want you to save up enough for a down payment of at least 10 to 20 percent. When buying a home on a mortgage, I always recommend the monthly payments be no more than 25 percent of your monthly take-home pay on a 15-year, fixed-rate loan.
Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money and business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.
Now, let’s get to the other issues. You have some things in your life that are pulling at you financially. At some point, you may have to take a long look at the situation and ask the hard question, “What is more important to me: horses and boats or home ownership?” Getting rid of that boat, or finding new homes for one, two or all of your horses, would bring in some cash to put toward your debt and cut down on at least some of the animal maintenance. Anyway, that’s how I would look at it. My wife and I both are big fans of boats and horses. But we like boats more. One reason is because they don’t eat as much! I can’t get mad at you about either one, but right now you’ve got three things pulling a t you as financial priorities — home ownership, a boat and three horses. They’re all pulling at you, and they’re pulling at each other and limiting each other.
A Frank Discussion About Credit Cards Dear Dave, I don’t understand why you don’t like it when people properly manage their credit cards and pay them off ever y month. By doing this, you pay no interest and in my case I even got a free trip to Europe from using my credit card. Please explain. Patrick Dear Patrick, I truly doubt that I can explain it to your satisfaction, but here goes. First, the credit card company did not give you a free trip to Europe. They’re not going to lose money on transaction after transaction, year after year. The fallacy is that you feel like you’ve outsmarted a multi-billion dollar company that studies human behavior at incredible levels. You maybe, possibly came out ahead against them during that particular calendar year, but even that’s debatable. Over the course of your life, you’ll spend more when using credit cards as opposed to cash. There’s plenty of research proving this to be fact. If you use a credit card repeatedly with the idea that you’re getting a free trip to Europe because you’re building up your miles, you spend more. An example would be McDonald’s. When they started taking credit cards years ago, they found that the people using them spent 47 percent more. In a good way, you are ver y unusual. You’re not playing over in the stupid zone like most people who use credit cards. But both I and the credit card companies have found that, on average, your behavior would put you in a class of less than one-half of one percent of their customers. Can 0.5 percent of people
handling snakes manage not to get bitten? Sure. But that doesn’t mean I’m going to Of course, you can always buy a lot less in start recommending snakes! house. But what it really comes down to is what’s most important to you. That’s the big —Dave question, and it’s one that only you can answer.

DEALING WITH THE STIGMA OF LONG-TERM UNEMPLOYMENT by Dennis Aimes
There is a stigma in the modern business world, one that hurts people tremendously. It’s the belief that people who are unemployed, especially the long-term unemployed, are lazy, no-good, unskilled workers. The truth is anything but. As anyone who has been out of work will tell you, looking for employment easily turns into a full-time job. From an employer’s perspective, long-term unemployment could mean a couple of things. The first is that the prospective employee actually is lazy and would much rather live life off the government dole. The second, and this one approaches a reasonable concern, is that a person who has been out of work for an extended period of time may have an outdated skillset. Unfortunately, overcoming either of these misguided beliefs is a daunting challenge. Here are the best ways to face the issue head-on:
OVERCOMING OBJECTIONS With unemployment rates as high as they are, job recruiters have their choice when looking to fill vacancies, so the way you handle this touchy subject may determine whether or not you are considered the best candidate. To deal with the notion that being out of work means you’re lazy, do something to fill your time. Remember, your resume doesn’t need to be an exclusive list of your previous work experience; it can also be a list of your accomplishments and qualifications. The contemporary employer is looking for a worker who is capable of working outside their comfort zone and can multitask effectively. If community volunteer opportunities are available in your area, then why not sign up for some? Showing a potential employer you care enough about your community to participate in it shows real initiative (and that you are not a member of the “lazy” unemployed). Volunteering is also a great way to meet new people and network, possibly even leading to a unique job opportunity. To combat the “outdated skills” concern, keep your skills sharp by continuing to use them. Depending on your field and your location, there may be opportunities for you to offer your services in a freelance capacity. You may also consider taking a class or trying to get a certification in a new skillset. The basic idea here is that you don’t want your abilities to look like they’re stagnating or that you aren’t concerned with continuing to grow as a person. Employers may also wonder (or even ask) why you haven’t yet been hired by another company. It’s important to stay positive when dealing with this situation. Don’t point out the effects the Great Recession has had on unemployment or discuss the places who should have hired you but didn’t. Simply acknowledge that you left your last job when you did and try to focus on what you’ve done in the meantime to stay sharp or educate yourself. While it may be discriminatory on the part of any employer or recruiter to imply that anyone unemployed is lazy, or to express concerns over someone’s long-term unemployment, the problem is that you are the one in need of work and the employer holds all the cards in this search. If they tell you “no”, you go back to being out of work and out of money, and they move on to the next applicant. By keeping yourself active, your skills sharpened and your attitude positive, you’ll make yourself a better applicant for whatever position you apply for. Dennis Aimes is a writer and financial advisor who knows how hard the job market can be. He wants as people Vol.many 21 Issue 1021as possible to know that you can protect your income with AAMI insurance. The Six-Step Power Plan to Achieve Career Success in 2016 Ford Myers
STEP 4: Americans make all kinds of New Year’s resolutions – to lose weight, to stop smoking, or to spend more time with family. However, you rarely hear anyone say, “I’m committed to improving my career situation this year.” With this in mind, I developed a simple, six-step “Power Plan” to help individuals make the most of their current career – or find a new and more satisfying one in 2016.
STEP 1: PERFORM AN INTERNAL AUDIT A comprehensive internal audit includes an assessment of the individual’s personal values, specific goals, challenges to be overcome – as well as a list of adjectives outlining the “ideal employer,” and a “perfect job description” written by the candidate.
STEP 2: UPDATE YOUR “JOB SEEKER’S TOOL KIT” Every job seeker needs written accomplishments, positioning and departure statements, professional biography, list of references, target company list, letters of recommendation and other “self-marketing tools,” along with the resume.
INTERVIEWING FOR SUCCESS: BETTER INTERVIEWS GET BETTER OFFERS Job seekers need to provide the interviewer with accurate, relevant, and value-centered stories about job performance. The interviewer needs to share the story of their company, describe the position in question, and explain specifically how they want you to fit into this picture. This is how alignment can be determined (or not).
STEP 5: SALARY NEGOTIATION – THE RULES OF THE GAME Salaries are fully negotiable, even in the current economy. Perform extensive salary research and defer salary discussions until an offer seems imminent. Discuss salary only with the person who has the authority to negotiate compensation and hire you. Always negotiate, no matter how good the salary offer seems initially.
STEP 6: COMMIT TO PERPETUAL CAREER MANAGEMENT
NETWORKING – THE CORE OF YOUR SEARCH
Always keep all your success documents up to date, put time aside every week for active networking, research and be aware of the competition, offer to help people in your network, stay actively involved in professional associations, build visibility and credibility on social media, and consistently improve your skills in interviewing and negotiating – even if you currently have a good job.
Develop a networking contact list, phone script for outreach calls, and networking meeting agenda. Using these tools plus the target company list, follow a proven protocol for generating many one-on-one networking meetings. This is the most important and effective strategy in job search, and it should represent more than 75% of any candidate’s job search efforts.
After a long slump, the US economy and job market are improving noticeably. Many people are moving up the corporate ladder or finding excellent new jobs. Those who are achieving success know how to “play the game” and are fully-prepared for every step of the career development process. Anyone can find career success in 2016 by properly executing these critical strategies!

Why Become a
b m e u l R P 10 Strong Arguments For Becoming A Plumber John Maxted
It is a common perception that you have to have a college education if you want to make it in the world today. Unfortunately, college may not be an option for everyone. And for many people it is not the best career option to take. There are plenty of career paths that you can follow that will give you the rewarding job that you are looking for. Perhaps one of the best positions to look for would be a plumber or plumbing contractor. This is a job that will give the great salary that all the college graduates are seeking and you will not have to spend years at school to get there. Below are 10 strong arguments for becoming a plumber.
$
1.
THERE IS CURRENTLY A SHORTAGE OF SKILLED PLUMBERS.
It is one of the up and coming fields to work in as there seems to be an ongoing shortage of people that are skilled for these positions. As more people retire, more positions are becoming available so you can be sure that you will be set with a job for life.

2.
THE PAY IS GREAT.
When you become a plumber, you will find that you are one of the highest paid contractors around. You can expect to make around $20 to $25 an hour to start. There are some areas where the pay goes as high as $35 an hour.
21 Issue 1021 52 Vol. January 8 - January 15, 2016
3.
PLUMBING HAS GREAT BENEFITS.
Benefits are very important to most people, especially if they have a family so this is a great perk of being a plumber. As employers find themselves looking for quality employees, they have beefed up the benefits packages to help attract more qualified plumbers to fill their positions. There is also the option to join the union and make even more money with even better benefits.
4.
YOU GET PAID TO LEARN.
You can earn as you learn with one of the many apprenticeship programs that allows you to train with qualified plumbers. This gives you the chance to learn by working hands on. Some of the training may even qualify as a college credit so you may want to check with your employer or trainer to see if you can get the credit.
5.
ECONOMIC DOWNTURN RESISTANT.
You will be pretty much exempt to the worries about the economy as your job will always be in demand so chances of layoffs are slim.
Consider Plumbing Courses before Deciding to Become a Plumber Jay Sanders If you think that being able to handle a wrench and knowing how to fix a leaky faucet makes you a plumber, think again. To become a licensed professional plumber, you must be at least 18 years old and complete about 4 years of certified courses. These teach you everything you need to know about plumbing. The only thing needed to enroll in these courses is an interest and motivation. You also need to gain actual hands on experience by becoming a plumber’s apprentice. The hands-on part of the course is a highly necessary one because it gives you the chance to put what you read in the books into action. If you are interested in becoming a plumber, there is plenty of information available. You can get a training outline to see exactly what is included in the course. The plumber training course will teach the fundamentals of plumbing through comprehensive study that prepares you for your apprenticeship. These fundamentals are what will help fix plumbing problems as well as possibly inventing new ways to fix them. You will also be taught about hot and cold water supply.
This is to help you enhance your comprehension about the systems that supply both types of water. Bathroom plumbing is something you will learn in detail. This includes all the various fittings as well as maintenance of them. The training received through this plumbing course will aid anyone in picking up the basics of plumbing. You can at least learn how to maintain your home’s plumbing. When you come out of these courses, you will also know how to successfully and competently use hand and power tools with regard to plumbing. Just the basics will give you the ability and confidence you need to repair plumbing conditions. Something to consider when deciding if you want to become a plumber or not, is that no matter what condition the economy is in, there will always be plumbing issues to be fixed. A plumber is never going to be out of a job and will continue to command impressive hourly wages. Training to be a plumber will not only give you some very useful skills , but will also provide you with job security for life. Source: ArticlesFactory.com
6.
GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR PROMOTION.
When you start out with training, you are an apprentice but you can quickly climb the ladder so there is always room for advancement and that is something that more and more people are looking for in a job.
8. 7.
DO SOMETHING WORTHWHILE.
You can take pride in the fact that you have helped to build something spectacular such as homes for families and even hospitals that will help many people.
HIGH JOB ENJOYMENT.
You can be sure that you are never bored as the work you do each day an change so you will never know what you will be doing, which means you will be less likely to get bored with your job.
9. 10.
RECOGNITION.
You will like the recognition that you get when you complete the job with top quality craftsmanship.
SOCIAL ADVANTAGES.
You will make friends and contacts that will help you to make a name for yourself in the industry.

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
The mikeroweWORKS Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that promotes hard work, supports the skilled trades, and challenges the persistent belief that a four-year degree is automatically the best path to take. The Foundation awards scholarships to men and women who have demonstrated an interest in and an aptitude for mastering a specific trade. Our focus is on supporting the specific skilled trades that help close the country’s skills gap and those that represent the significant bulk of our unfilled jobs. The Foundation has been instrumental in granting more than $3 million in scholarships to schools around the country, including Midwest Technical Institute, Tulsa Welding School, The Refrigeration School and Universal Technical Institute. One of the most important objectives of the mrW Foundation is to continually provide opportunities for financial aid to help those qualified individuals who are interested in learning a skill and mastering a trade. Toward that goal, we are continually creating a variety of scholarship programs with like-minded institutions and organizations. Each program has it’s own nuances but all are similar in that they intend to further Mike’s “PR Campaign for Hard Work.”

ASK DIANA Q: I have an Associates Degree in paralegal studies. I have never worked in the legal profession; only in oil and gas; but the area I worked in had a lot to do with legal: Probate, Leases, title documents, mineral estates and certain types of oil and gas agreements. I would like to use my oil and gas experience and work in the legal industry but I keep getting the s a m e a n s w e r, w h i c h i s t h e y a r e l o o k i n g for someone with recent experience. I agree that your experience would be a neat fit if it were more recent. Just l i k e a n y o t h e r i n d u s t r y, t h i n g s c h a n g e o n a weekly basis in the legal profession, and they need people who have current knowledge of the correct way to handle things. There are various wa ys to phrase this. You can sa y something a bout company culture, you can say that it was a short-term assignment, or you can say “Ethical concerns.” I see nothing wrong with your orig inal sta tement. TIPS for Becoming an
Apprentice Electrician
M
any people that go to school to be an electrician complete an apprenticeship first. This allows you to get on-the-job training with experts in order to learn the skills needed for a long, successful career in this field. You won’t make as much as a journeyperson electrician, but you can still earn a decent hourly rate for the work. Here are some tips for completing the coursework and finding your apprenticeship.
COMPLETE THE REQUIRED COURSEWORK Before you can become an apprentice electrician, you need to be eligible for the apprenticeship. This is done by completing the required coursework. This usually includes a combination of classroom studies and on-the-job experience. The majority of the electrician programs require 2,000 hours of working in electrical work along with about 144 classroom hours. It is important to find your local chapter through the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee to know exactly what the requirements are.
TAKE NECESSARY EXAMS AND TESTS
62
Some states also require a licensing examination to be done either before or after the apprenticeship. Even if this doesn’t need to be done until after the apprenticeship is over, it is a good idea Vol.to 21 start Issue 1021 preparing for it now. If you mention that January 8 - January 15, 2016 you are studying for your exam, someone look-
ing to hire an apprentice might be more inclined to hire you since it shows you are serious about your career. The requirements for licenses and exams vary by state. Your school should inform you of what is required.
SUBMIT AN APPLICATION Before looking into companies that are hiring electrician apprentices, consider filing out an application and submitting it with the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA). This organization will keep your application on file and inform companies about your availability when inquiring about available apprentice candidates. They can only give you names of nearby apprenticeship programs.
UPDATE YOUR RESUME Keep your resume updated so that it is ready to submit to interested employers. Add your education and work experience as it pertains to the electrical field. If you have completed an internship or volunteer work for nearby organizations, put that on the resume as well. In your objective, make it obvious that you are looking to become an apprentice now and want to be a journeyperson electrician in the future. Keep updating the resume as you complete on-the-job training, pass an exam, get licensed and finish your schooling. Also put any specialties or area of electrical work you are most interested in. While completing an apprenticeship is optional, it is highly recommended. When you are finished being an apprentice electrician, you will feel more confident in your skills and have learned techniques from professionals that help you have a successful career as an electrician. Employers also like to see the apprenticeship on your resume.
