NOT Your Grandfather's
Factory:
Modernizing Manufacturing
to Attract Millennials By Lisa Ryan
W
hy is engagement such a big deal in manufacturing and the skilled trades? Because according to a 2013 industry report, for every four trade positions that workers retire from, the industry is producing only one replacement. Worse yet, it's predicted that in the next decade, that 2 million out of the 3.5 million manufacturing jobs available will go unfilled because of the lack of available talent. Now you may be asking, how can that be? With millions of jobless Millennials, who happen to be facing an unemployment rate that is double the national rate, don't we have enough people to fill those positions? Not until we change the image and perception of manufacturing - for both kids and their parents. For the past two generations, young professionals haven't exactly been leaping at the chance to work in manufacturing. Part of the problem is the stigma that manufacturing has - working in an unclean environment, with outdated thinking, and little room for growth. The other, bigger issues are the parents who have discouraged their kids from attending trade or technical school and instead promote the value of a four-year degree from a college or university. According to the National Association of Manufacturers and the Manufacturing Institute (NAM), only 3 in 10 parents would consider encouraging their child toward a manufacturing career. The perception has been that you go into the trades if you are not "college material." And parents want their kids to be "college material."
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Lisa_Ryan/331468
As the United States is now undergoing a "manufacturing renaissance" and looking to produce their goods on American soil again, there is an urgent and growing need for new talent. So, how do you make manufacturing jobs more attractive and appealing to prospective employees? You can start by modernizing your brand. If your company is stuck in an old, calcified way of doing business, you're going to have a hard time finding and keeping younger workers. Today's workers are digital natives. They are "wired" for technology in a way unlike any previous generations, and they expect to access it in the workplace. That's why it's critical for manufacturers to not only have cutting edge Industry 4.0 technology available, companies need to promote the technology used in their production process. Millennials will be pleased, if not surprised, so know that more than two-thirds of U.S. manufacturing companies are adopting 3D printing and more than half use robots.
In doing so, you're letting job applicants know that this isn't their grandfather's factory! One of the first places to start is your company website. Yes, it's a great place to share what your company is all about, but it needs to be real - not a bunch of mumbo-jumbo "marketing speak." Look for ways to share your company culture and mission. What is it like to work there? Demonstrate how your products and services serve a greater mission that simply making a profit. Take advantage of your online presence to show how your company makes a positive impact on society. Next, check out your social media. (Now, if you're saying "What's that?" or "That's just a fad," you have your work cut out for you.) Figure out where your potential hires are hanging out. They may not be on Facebook, they may choose Instagram, Twitter, or LinkedIn instead. It's important to make sure your channels are active and up-to-date. Give your employees opportunities to share what's going on from their perspective. Post pictures from social events, charitable projects, and other fun occasions. Does your company look like a fun place to work from a social media standpoint? If not, look for ways to improve public perception. When done well, this can be a relatively quick fix - just start posting! When you have an active, engaging online social media presence, it builds credibility with potential hires from the younger generations. Finally, keep in mind that Millennials are always connected. They look for one-on-one communication and immediate feedback. They consider their managers and leaders their peers and want to have access to them. If the only time you're giving feedback is during the annual review process, you're going to lose. There are lots of online tools, pulse-type surveys, and artificial intelligence programs that can help give feedback on demand. Communicating frequently and keeping employees in the loop will do wonders for engagement and performance development. The digital nature of today's manufacturing is opening up many opportunities for skilled positions, transforming the manual nature of a factory job to the high-tech environment it is today. According to Vicki Holt, President and CEO for Protolabs, "Digital manufacturing is revitalizing our industry and is igniting new opportunities. The skills gap presents a critical roadblock for all of us. But it's encouraging to see a renewed optimism from a new generation of workers, and to hear that they understand this isn't their grandparents' manufacturing industry. Much work remains ahead of us, but this is a good start."
Look for ways to better utilize mobile devices, videos and virtual reality in your hiring process as well as throughout the plant. MilLisa Ryan is the Founder of Grategy. She is an employee engagement and business lennials are used to watching videos to learn about new things, so keynote speaker, gratitude expert, and author of 10 books including "Manufacturing why not use YouTube or another video website to give potential Engagement: 98 Proven Strategies to Attract and Retain Your Industry's Top Talent," hires a realistic view of "a day in the life" of a worker at your facility. and "The Upside of Down Times: Discovering the Power of Gratitude." She co-stars Keep the videos to 2-3 minutes of less and capitalize on the "wow" in two documentaries: "The Keeper of the Keys" with Jack Canfield and "The Gratitude Experiment." factors of the job. Nailing Down the Need for Nail Gun Safety Nail guns are a tool used by both construction workers and in homes that make building go faster, this increased productivity introduced new injury risks (or risk factors). Knowing the hazards of nail guns and how to use them more safely can prevent injury at your job site or for during your next building project.
https://www.cdc.gov/features/nailgunsafety/index.html
THE REALITY
Nail guns are powerful, easy to operate, and boost productivity for nailing tasks. They are also responsible for an estimated 37,000 emergency room visits each year – 68% of these involve workers and 32% involve consumers. Severe nail gun injuries have led to construction worker deaths. Fortunately, these injuries can be prevented, and more and more contractors are making changes to improve nail gun safety. Research shows that risk of injury is twice as high using “contact” trigger nail guns compared to “sequential” trigger nail guns.
HOW DO NAIL GUN INJURIES HAPPEN?
There are seven major risk factors that can lead to nail gun injury. Understanding them will help you to prevent injuries on your job sites. 1. 2.
Unintended nail discharge from double fire; Unintended nail discharge from knocking the safety contact with the trigger squeezed; 3. Nail penetration through lumber work piece; 4. Nail ricochet after striking a hard surface or metal18, feature; 2019 12 JANUARY
5. 6. 7.
Missing the work piece; Awkward position nailing; and Bypassing safety mechanisms.
IT CAN HAPPEN TO YOU
Here are two stories of nail gun injuries that hammer home the issue of nail gun safety. From a construction worker’s standpoint: Two framers were working together to lay down and nail a subfloor. One framer was waiting and holding the nail gun with his finger on the contact trigger. The other framer was walking backwards toward him and dragging a sheet of plywood. The framer handling the plywood backed into the tip of the nail gun and was shot in the back. The nail nicked his kidney, but fortunately he recovered. As a result of this incident, the contractor switched to using only sequential triggers on framing nail guns. Coworkers can get injured if they bump into your contact trigger nail gun. You can prevent this by using a full sequential trigger. From a contractor’s standpoint: After his crews experienced many double fires and a related serious nail gun injury, a New Jersey contractor switched to using only sequential triggers. He believes he has eliminated the risk of double fire injuries and he estimates that the change has had only a slight impact on productivity—a few extra hours per house.
6 PRACTICAL STEPS YOU CAN TAKE
By taking these steps, employers can prevent nail gun injuries from occurring: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
Use full sequential trigger nail guns; Provide training; Establish nail gun work procedures; Provide personal protective equipment (PPE); Encourage reporting and discussion of injuries and close calls; and Provide first aid and medical treatment.
Two new documents strive to help prevent nail gun injuries and keep construction workers and consumers safe. The first, “Nail Gun Safety: A Guide for Contractors,” developed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), was developed for contractors. The second, “Straight Talk About Nail Gun Safety,” is worker-focused.

Background Checks Tips for Job Applicants and Employees Courtesy of: Federal Trade Commission | consumer.ftc.gov
Some employers check into your background before deciding whether to hire you or keep you on the job. When they do a background check, you have legal rights under federal law. Depending on where you live, your city or state may offer additional protections. It’s important to know whom to contact if you think an employer has broken the law related to background checks, and an equally good idea to check with someone who knows the laws where you live.
QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR BACKGROUND An employer may ask you for all sorts of information about your background, especially during the hiring process. For example, some employers may ask about your employment history, your education, your criminal record, your financial history, your medical history, or your use of online social media. It’s legal for employers to ask questions about your background or to require a background check — with certain exceptions. They’re not permitted to ask your for medical information until they offer you a job, and they’re not allowed to ask for your genetic information, including your family medical history, except in limited circumstances. When an employer asks about your background, they must treat you the same as anyone else, regardless of your race, national origin, color, sex, religion, disability, genetic information (including family medical history), or age if you’re 40 or older. An employer isn’t allowed to ask for extra background information because you are, say, of a certain race or ethnicity. If an employer treats you differently because of your race, national origin, color, sex, religion, disability, genetic information (including family medical history), or older age, or asks you inappropriate questions about your medical status, medical history, or family medical history, contact the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) at eeoc.gov or at 1-800-669-4000.
22
JANUARY 18, 2019
USE OF BACKGROUND REPORTS
Some employers try to find out about your background by hiring someone to do a “background report” on you. Among the most common are criminal background reports and credit reports. But special rules apply when an employer gets a background report about you from a company in the business of compiling background information. 1. Before getting the report, the employer must tell you that they might use the information to make a decision related to your employment, and must ask for your written permission. You don’t have to give your permission, but if you’re applying for a job and you don’t give your permission, the employer may reject your application. If an employer gets a background report on you without your permission, contact the FTC at ftc.gov or at 1-877-FTC-HELP. 2. If the employer thinks they might not hire, keep, or promote you because of something in the report, they must give you a copy of the report and a “Summary of Rights” that tells you how to contact the company that provided the report. That’s because background reports sometimes have mistakes. If you see a mistake in your background report, ask the background reporting company to fix it, and to send a copy of the corrected report to the employer. Tell the employer about the mistake, too. Before you apply for a job, it’s a good idea to order a free copy of your credit report. That way, you can fix any mistakes before an employer sees it. To get your free credit report, visit annualcreditreport.com or call 1-877322-8228. You don’t have to buy any products they offer, and you don’t have to pay to get mistakes corrected.
IF THE EMPLOYER FINDS SOMETHING NEGATIVE IN YOUR BACKGROUND
If your background report has some negative information, be prepared to explain it — and the reason it shouldn’t affect your ability to do the job. Here is a description of your rights, depending on what type of negative information the employer finds:
CRIMINAL HISTORY OR OTHER PUBLIC RECORDS:
If you don’t get hired or promoted because of information in your criminal history or other public records, the employer must tell you orally, in writing, or electronically: • the name, address, and phone number of the company that supplied the criminal history or public records report; • that the company that provided the information didn’t make the decision to take the adverse action and can’t give you specific reasons for it; and • that you have the right to dispute the accuracy and completeness of any information in the report, and to an additional free report from the company that supplied it, if you ask for it within 60 days of the employer’s decision not to hire or retain you. The company that provided the employer with negative information from a criminal history or other public records has certain obligations: it has to tell you that it provided the information and it has to take certain steps to make sure the information is accurate. Some employers might say not to apply if you have a criminal record. That could be discrimination. If that happens to you, contact the EEOC at eeoc.gov or at 1-800-6694000. Find information on: • arrest and conviction records in employment decisions (eeoc.gov/laws/ guidance/qa_arrest_conviction.cfm) • arrest and conviction records as an automatic bar to all employment
CREDIT REPORT/ FINANCIAL INFORMATION:
If an employer decides not to hire, keep, or promote you based on financial information in a background report, it must tell you — orally, in writing, or electronically. Specifically, the employer must: • give you the name, address, and phone number of the company that supplied the credit report or background information; • give you a statement that the company that supplied the information didn’t make the decision to take the VOL. 24 ISSUE 1175 Continued on page 48

You’re a WHAT? Camden West — Fredericktown, Ohio Interviewed by Elka Torpey | October 2018
What do you do?
Tell me how you teach a robot.
I work for an automotive components manufacturer. I’m the robotics technician, but I’m also the die cast engineer. I do everything from the complete setup of robots to their daily maintenance.
There are different moves you can program a robot to make. We enter information through a teach pendant, an external device that controls the robot. Instead of teaching through the computer, it’s on the robot itself.
We have about 8 robots. The robots pick a shot [a piece of aluminum] out of a die cast machine and bring it to a trim press. They’re not really something you have to mess with a whole lot.
Depending on the robot you’re working with, you might use different programming languages. It doesn’t matter what the program or the make of the robot is; after you’ve learned one language, you can pick up others, because all robots are set up about the same.
Interviewed by Elka Torpey, "Robotics technician," Career Outlook, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, October 2018.
But in my job prior to this, we had 70 operable robots. They were welding robots, so they had torches to weld silencers to car exhaust systems. And every day, my job would be teaching a robot.
What happens if a problem arises? I figure out what the problem is and fix it. Most robots will sound an alarm and identify what that alarm means. For example, it might tell you one of the circuit boards is bad. It will give you the exact description of what’s wrong and how to fix it. Sometimes that’s as easy as going into maintenance mode and resetting the memory. I also have a toolbox and am on the floor repairing things. I need to keep the robots and other equipment running at peak performance.
What prepared you for this job? I have a 2-year degree in electrical maintenance. And I did take one semester of robot training that taught me basic handling moves, such as how to get a robot to pick up a shaft and insert it into a part. In my last job, I took a class to learn how to work with those robots. But almost everything that I learned for programming was thanks to hands-on teaching from another associate. I’d follow one of the other associates around, who would walk me through what needed to be done. It was probably about a week’s worth of training. After that, if I needed anything, I’d give that associate a call and we’d work it out.
Are there specific skills that are important for robotics technicians? Communication is big no matter what you’re doing. Also, pretty much everything you deal with has some sort of scale or dimension, so you need to know how to read blueprints and recognize where robots are being used in the process.
46
JANUARY 18, 2019
And you should have basic computer skills: creating spreadsheets and presentations, doing word processing. A lot of the robots use software that you program offline and walk to the production line to upload. VOL. 24 ISSUE 1175
Robotics
TECHNICIAN
How did you become interested in this occupation? I actually wasn’t pursing robot technology. I was going to be an electrician or electrical contractor, and I got hired as an electrical engineering technician. It turned out I wasn’t needed for that, so I worked as a mechanical engineering technician instead—and then I got thrown into working with robots.
Employment 2016:
13,800
Median Annual Wage 2017:
$56,740
(Higher than the $37,690 median annual wage for all workers.) Source: Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS.
But even in college, I started playing around with robots and realized: “There’s something here. This is fun.” I’m not one of those people who likes to sit a lot, so it’s definitely an opportunity to get out of the office and learn.
What do you like best about your job? It keeps you busy and it’s never the same. Every day, you always learn something new, even if you’ve seen the process 100 times. And you get to see and do a whole lot of things. For example, I once went to Japan for a couple days to see the robots we had coming. You get to learn and work with new technology all the time.
What’s your biggest challenge? In manufacturing, you’re trying to keep the equipment running efficiently and meet your production numbers. But when robots and machinery are not functioning as they should, that leads to downtime on the production line. It’s stressful knowing that other workers are relying on you to solve a problem so they can do their jobs. What advice do you have for someone who wants to be a robotics technician? There’s always something new to learn, and it’s incredible what these companies have in terms of robotics. Take every opportunity you get to learn about robotics technology, because it’s the way of the future. And it’s a very entertaining career. Elka Torpey is an economist in the Office of Occupational Statistics and Employment Projections, BLS. She can be reached at torpey.elka@bls.gov .

RACE, NATIONAL ORIGIN, COLOR, SEX, RELIGION, DISABILITY, GENETIC INFORMATION, AGE:
Are you passionate about helping others?
Sometimes, it’s legal for an employer not to hire you or keep you on because of information in your background, and sometimes, it isn’t. For example, it’s illegal when the employer has different background requirements depending on your race, national origin, color, sex, religion, disability, genetic information (including family medical history), or age, if you’re 40 or older. It’s also illegal for an employer to reject applicants of one ethnicity with criminal records for a job, but not to reject other applicants with the same criminal records. Even if the employer treats you the same as everyone else, using background information still can be illegal discrimination. For example, employers shouldn’t use a policy or practice that excludes people with certain criminal records if it significantly disadvantages individuals of a particular race, national origin, or another protected characteristic, and doesn’t accurately predict who will be a responsible, reliable, or safe employee. In legal terms, the policy or practice has a “disparate impact” and is not “job related and consistent with business necessity.”
Don’t miss this opportunity to find career success and fulfillment while you help people reach their highest level of independence!

WHERE TO GO FOR HELP
The FTC enforces the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), a federal law that regulates background reports for employment. The EEOC enforces federal laws against employment discrimination. FTC If an employer got your background report without asking your permission, or rejected you without sending you the required notices, contact the FTC at ftc.gov or at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357) or 1-866-6534261 (TTY). Why report it to the FTC? Because the FCRA allows the FTC, other federal agencies, and states to sue employers who don’t comply with the law’s provisions. The FCRA also allows people to sue employers in state or federal court for certain violations. To find out how to order free copies of your credit report and how to dispute errors, visit ftc.gov/FreeReports.
EEOC
If you think that a background check was discriminatory, you may contact the EEOC at eeoc.gov, or at 1-800-669-4000 or 1-800-669-6820 (TTY). The EEOC is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee because of the person’s race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability, or genetic information. The EEOC investigates, conciliates, and mediates charges of employment discrimination, and also files in the18, public interest. JANUARY 2019 48lawsuits

Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

YOU NEED ACTIONS, NOT WORDS Dear Dave, My husband and I have about $20,000 in credit card debt, plus payments on a new truck. We also have a camper he bought before we got married that we’re still making payments on. I recently received a $50,000 inheritance, and I’d like to use that money to help get us out of debt and open a savings account. My husband says he is onboard, but he keeps buying things we don’t have the money for. I don’t want the inheritance to go to waste, so what can I do? Tessa Dear Tessa, I want you guys to get control of your finances and have a better life, too. But until your husband is willing to get rid of the camper and the truck, I’d hang on to the inheritance money. Right now, you need more than his words—you need his actions. At this point, the real issue isn’t the debt or the idea of using the gift you received to pay off the debt. The issue is you can’t see a future where your husband isn’t going to repeat the same financial stupidity. You need to have that future cleared up, and it isn’t going to be

cleared up until he proves he has changed his heart and his ways. In his case, that means showing he has become a grown-up and isn’t buying toys he can’t afford anymore. I know where you are, and I know where he is right now. I’ve been there. Years ago, I was a “grown man” but I was still really a little boy buying things I couldn’t afford to impress people I didn’t even know. This guy likes stuff. He likes shiny trucks, shiny things to pull behind shiny trucks, and that sort of thing. But it’s time for him to sell all the crap, grow up, and start putting you and your family first. Keep talking to him. Explain how important it is to you that you’re both on same page financially and in every other aspect of your marriage. Until he proves he’s ready to do that, though, I’d say just hold on to the inheritance money. —Dave

COMMITTED TO SAFETY
8:00 am - 5:00 pm Gulf Coast Safety Institute 320 Delany Rd. | La Marque, TX 77568 FREE CLASS For the first time in US history, accidental injury is the #3 cause of death among all deaths (on or off the job) in our country. We have all heard it said before that “Safety is our #1 Priority”. But priorities change and when they do safety in the workplace can decline. When we know that 5190 workers were killed on the job in 2016 should safety be our “priority” or a cultural value? In this class, we will discuss accident prevention at work and how we can carry it over into our homes and vehicles. Students will leave with practical tools to help prevent accidental death in the workplace and at home. This course will be taught by Bridget Morales. To register: Contact us at 409-933-8365
