Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

Dave Ramsey is America’s trusted voice on money & business. He has authored five New York Times best-selling books, including The Total Money Makeover. The Dave Ramsey Show is heard by more than 8.5 million listeners each week on more than 550 radio stations. Follow Dave on Twitter at @DaveRamsey and on the web at daveramsey.com.

T H E FA M I LY N I G H T M A R E Dear Dave, My fiancé told me the other day he’s going to buy a failing restaurant with his mom, sister, and a family friend. None of them have any food service or business experience, and he has never said anything about wanting to own a restaurant. When I questioned him about it, he said it was his mother’s idea. I don’t want to be part of this, and it wouldn’t be his first big surprise decision, so I told him I would walk away from the marriage if he pursues this. I feel bad about it, because he didn’t really do anything wrong. Do you think I’m making a wise decision?

- Carla Dear Carla, Yes, he did do something wrong. He put his controlling mommy ahead of his bride-to-be, and it sounds like it’s not the first time he’s made big decisions without consulting you. Any man who doesn’t consider the feelings of his wife or fiancée in an important decision-making process is not marriage material. I think your decision was heartbreaking, but wise. Going into a partnership with family like this is unwise. There’s a lot of messed up stuff in his family dynamic. And it’s not like you won’t support your man and his dreams and decisions, but those dreams need to contain wisdom and consideration for you. Otherwise, any dream will fast become a nightmare. I know it hurts, Carla, but this was not the right guy for you. Money problems are one of the biggest causes of divorce in America today. Trouble with in-laws is another, and you almost signed up for both. I’m sorry you had to make such a tough call. If you want to salvage this, you could explain to him that he needs to make better decisions to win your hand again. In this case, making better decisions means involving you in the process, and giving your thoughts, feelings, and opinions the respect they deserve.

KEEP THE BIKE Dear Dave, My husband and I aren’t seeing eye-to-eye on a motorcycle. The bike was my dad’s, and I got it four years ago when he passed away. I’d like to keep it because I grew up riding it with him, and I still ride it today. My husband thinks we should sell it to pay off debt. We make about $60,000 a year, and we have about $36,000 to go before we’re debt-free except for our home. The bike is worth about $2,300. What do you think?

- Amanda Dear Amanda, There’s no way I’d sell that bike. If it were just a miscellaneous motorcycle, I’d sell the thing in about 20 seconds. But this bike is unique and special because it was your dad’s. There’s only one of those in the world. It’s like a lady in the same scenario saying she has a $2,300 diamond on her hand that’s her wedding ring. Would I tell her to sell it? No way! This bike is very much woven into the fabric of your life and your fondest memories. As a rule, you just don’t sell things like that. Now, there may be extreme cases sometimes where a person might have to consider selling something of that magnitude. If you were in a truly awful situation making $10,000 a year and the ring is worth $200,000 while you’re $100,000 in debt, you’d have to give it some thought. But there’s no way I’d sell that bike in your case!

— Dave

Machinists and Tool & Die Makers

The median annual wage for tool and die makers was $51,060 in May 2016. The median annual wage for machinists was $41,700 in May 2016.

What Machinists and Tool & Die Makers Do Machinists and tool and die makers must understand computerized measuring machines and metalworking processes. Machinists and tool and die makers set up and operate a variety of computer-controlled and mechanically controlled machine tools to produce precision metal parts, instruments, and tools.

Machinists typically do the following:

Job Outlook

Employment of machinists and tool and die makers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2014 to 2024, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Workers familiar with computer software applications and who can perform multiple tasks in a machine shop will have the best job opportunities.

milling machines, and grinders, to produce precision metal parts. Many machinists must be able to use both manual and CNC machinery. CNC machines control the cutting tool speed and do all necessary cuts to create a part. The machinist determines the cutting path, the speed of the cut, and the feed rate by programming instructions into the CNC machine. Although workers may produce large quantities of one part, precision machinists often produce small batches or one-of-a-kind items. The parts that machinists make range from simple steel bolts to titanium bone screws for orthopedic implants. Hydraulic parts, antilock brakes, and automobile pistons are other widely known products that machinists make. Some machinists repair or make new parts for existing machinery. After an industrial machinery mechanic discovers a broken part in a machine, a machinist remanufactures the part. The machinist refers to blueprints and performs the same machining operations that were used to create the original part in order to create the replacement. Because the technology of machining is changing rapidly, workers must learn to operate a wide range of machines. Some newer manufacturing processes use lasers, water jets, and electrified wires to cut the workpiece. Although some of the computer controls are similar to those of other machine tools, machinists must understand the unique capabilities and features of different machines. As engineers create new types of machine tools, machinists must learn new machining properties and techniques. Toolmakers craft precision tools that are used to cut, shape, and form metal and other materials. They also produce jigs and fixtures—devices that hold metal while it is bored, stamped, or drilled—and gauges and other measuring devices. Die makers construct metal forms, called dies, that are used to shape metal in stamping and forging operations. They also make metal molds for die casting and for molding plastics, ceramics, and composite materials. Many tool and die makers use CAD to develop products and parts. Designs are entered into computer programs that produce blueprints for the required tools and dies. Computer-numeric control programmers, found in the metal and plastic machine workers profile, convert CAD designs into CAM programs that contain instructions for a sequence of cutting tool operations. Once these programs are developed, CNC machines follow the set of instructions contained in the program to produce the part. Machinists normally operate CNC machines, but tool and die makers often are trained to both operate CNC machines and write CNC programs and thus may do either task.

Important Qualities

Some community colleges and technical schools have 2-year programs that train students to become machinists or tool and die makers. The work of machinists and tool and die makers must be highly accurate. For example, machining parts may demand accuracy to within .0001 of an inch, a level of accuracy that requires workers’ concentration and dexterity.

HOW TO MORE EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATE YOUR VALUE DURING THE JOB SEARCH PROCESS By Michael M DeSafey

It seems as though everywhere you look, there’s a new set of recommendations on how to write your resume more effectively, handle yourself during an interview, or communicate with future employers. Sometimes, you’ll even get contradictory advice! Ultimately, your goal is to effectively communicate your value to your future employer during the job search process. By utilizing these tips, you can learn to be more efficient with your communications and share the information 1. GIVE EXAMPLES. Everyone’s resume is filled with words like “creative,” “problem-solver,” and “team player.” Most professionals now strongly encourage staying away from static lists of traits. Instead, you want to choose a better tactic: give examples of what you’ve accomplished. From your resume to your interview, highlight your best traits with examples of the actions you completed in your former positions. For example, you might say that you achieved a higher rate of sales than anyone else in your department or that you effectively saved your company ten percent of their marketing expenses by developing a more efficient plan. By highlighting your accomplishments instead of your traits, you show your future employer what you’re really capable of.

2. PRACTICE YOUR ANSWERS. When you know you’ve got an interview coming, don’t just assume that you’ll be able to come up with the right answers to the most common interview questions. Instead, when you’ve got a big interview coming up, take the time to look over those lists of interview questions and consider how you would answer each one. Take the time to come up with examples. Consider writing out your answers, not to give to your future employer, but to give yourself a chance to put your thoughts in order. 3. KEEP THE LINES OF COMMUNICATION WITH THE COMPANY OPEN. You don’t want to pester the HR department or your inside contact about whether or not you got the job, but you do want to make sure that they’re receiving the information you’ve sent them and that everything is moving smoothly. Take the time to communicate with prospective employers. Ideally, you should use the method set out by the company: if they contact you primarily via email, send emails back with your questions. If they prefer to communicate by calling, you should do the same. Don’t be disturbed, however, if it takes them a day or two to get back to you: remember that they have a number of applications besides yours to deal with and plenty of other things on their plates. Even if you’re rejected for a position, take the time to ask why. A personalized explanation could make it easier for you to get the next position you have your eye on.

get to know you and everything you can bring to the table for their organization. 5. CHECK YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES. Everything from the LinkedIn profile you haven’t updated since the last time you were job hunting to the security settings on your Facebook profile could be important in your job search. Make sure that your online presence shows the face you want future employers to see. Clean up your public comments, make sure your profiles showcase your unique selling point, and check to be sure that your webpage, if you have one, shows your best work. Potential employers are going to do their homework and learn as much as they can about you. Make sure that what they learn paints you in the best possible light! Setting yourself apart from other candidates can be a challenge. When you develop your communication skills and learn to market yourself, however, you’ll discover that it’s easier to step into the job of your dreams. Before you know it, you’ll be walking through the door of a new job in the place you’ve always wanted to work. Finding Your Career Path With

Manufacturing Engineer Jobs Johnny E. Smith Manufacturing engineers have some of the same base knowledge required of all engineers but focus more on smaller projects and less on large scale structure design or construction. Engineers who work within the manufacturing realm can have varying degrees of responsibility within the business. Some are responsible for the entire manufacturing process, laying out the production floor, schedule and method of manufacturing used. Others are simply involved in the development of new business ventures. These kinds of manufacturing engineer jobs usually work to develop new products, build prototypes, and determine the method of manufacturing the new product.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/5476699

Some manufacturing engineers may be responsible for testing the integrity of products and manufacturing methods. In this case, they determine which methods are the right ones for producing products in the safest and most efficient manner possible. In larger businesses, engineers are usually in-

volved in only limited aspects of business operations. In larger businesses the entire production process is controlled and overseen by the manufacturing engineering department. In smaller businesses, engineers often wear several hats, participating in quality control activities, scheduling meetings and other standard business management and planning processes.
