“DID YOU KNOW” TIPS FOR VETERANS ENTERING THE JOB MARKET
Moving from active duty to Veteran status is a significant change. You may have a lot on your mind as you reunite with family and reintegrate into your community. You may also be coping with injuries you sustained in service to our nation. To help smooth the transition, VA’s Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VocRehab) program has developed 10 tips to help you move from a military to civilian workforce.
1. NETWORK Ask family members, friends, and other Veterans to put you in touch with the decision-makers at the places you would like to work. Contact those people and ask for an informational interview. Unlike job interviews, informational interviews let you talk with potential employers about your strengths and experiences. Even if they are not hiring, the people you connect with may be able to refer you to others who are—and they themselves may keep you in mind for future openings.
2. EMPHASIZE CHARACTER Your skills and certifications are important, but civilian employers also want to know about your broader experience and understand how you applied your skills. Use your cover letter, résumé, and networking conversations to emphasize situations in which you took initiative, demonstrated flexibility, exhibited leadership abilities, and performed for the good of the team.
3. TRANSLATE YOUR CREDENTIALS Most of your military training can be applied to JUNE 29, 2018 22post-military your career. However, most states
and the federal government require their own licenses and certifications for jobs including flying planes, treating patients, and operating certain machinery. Find out whether you need to take an exam or a recertification course to make use of your military credentials. Military occupational specialty translators are available on VetSuccess. gov to help you find civilian credentials and certificates directly related to your MOS.
4. PACE YOURSELF From your time in the military, you may already be familiar with PACE planning—the primary, alternate, contingency, and emergency plan for each undertaking. As you begin your search for civilian employment, recognize that your top job choices may not work out. Identify your top job picks, positions you can live with, and positions that you’d rather not take, and apply to all of them. As long as the work won’t aggravate any health concerns, don’t hesitate to take a less desirable position to pay the bills while you look for something else.
7. READY YOUR PAPERWORK Every Veteran knows the value of his or her DD214 (Report of Separation) or DD2586 (Verification of Military Experience and Training) for VA-related purposes, but these documents are also important as you prepare to enter the civilian workforce or go back to school. Make sure you have copies of your DD214 and DD2586 to show your employer or school so that it can verify your military service, training, and experience. It may also be helpful to provide transcripts of any military training and coursework you completed.
8. PREPARE FOR A NEW CULTURE The cultures of the civilian workforce and the military are different. Know in advance that you may feel disoriented for the first few weeks in the civilian workforce, and take your time in getting used to the new work culture.

The federal government gives preference to jobseeking Veterans over many other applicants. Not all military service qualifies someone to receive Veterans’ preference, and so it is important to understand the specific requirements. For more information about Veterans’ preference visit the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s VetGuide (www.opm.gov/staffingportal/vetguide.asp).
Career advancement in the military is linear and highly structured: You move up the ladder one step at a time. In comparison, civilian career development is less regimented. Take control of your career development: If you want to learn new skills, identify a course at your local college, university, or other institution of learning and discuss it with your supervisor. Think about how horizontal career moves will help you broaden your skills. And don’t be afraid to talk about your career development goals with your supervisor.
6. REDUCE STRESS, INCREASE CONFIDENCE Employers want to know whether your personality will fit in well with their other employees’ personalities. Put your best foot forward at job interviews by keeping your stress levels down. Get plenty of exercise, rest, and engage in normal social activities. If you start to feel anxious about your job search or any other matter, contact your VocRehab Counselor for support.

Ask Ken Coleman FIRST IMPRESSIONS Question: Do you have any suggestions for how a leader can get to know his or her new team? Answer: This is a great question. Many leaders walk into these kinds of situations with their ideas, their expectations, and nothing else. They don’t spend time building relationships with new team members. In the long run, this type of approach is self-defeating. Start by meeting with each new team member for about half an hour. Ask them to describe their role, their goals, and what they feel is expected of them. Find out what they think their own strengths and weaknesses, are, too. Praise their strengths, and how these factor into the overall success of the team, and let them know you’d like to develop a plan to address any weaknesses they feel they may have. Also, find out what each member thinks about the current team, and its systems and processes. This shouldn’t be a complaint session, but rather an opportunity to gather constructive feedback. Finally, don’t limit these meetings to work-related issues. Get to know each of your team members on a personal level. Ask about their families, and their hobbies. Let them know you care and that they’re real people – not just units of production.

THE PERFECT FOLLOW-UP Question: What is your advice for writing a follow-up letter to a potential employer? Answer: A follow-up letter or email after a job interview should be short, professional, polite, and to the point. In my mind, it should be a read of about 15 seconds that reminds them they like you. Next, let them know how excited you are about the possibility of being part of their organization and contributing to their mission. Finally, wrap things up with a little more gratefulness. Thank them for their willingness to consider you, while adding that you’re flattered to be considered for the position. If it helps, think of it as making a sandwich with words. Look at your follow-up as an enthusiasm-and-excitement sandwich, with those ingredients stuffed between two slices of gratefulness. I believe this is the formula for the perfect follow-up! the graduation celebrations have ended, many recent graduates must consider what they are going to do with their lives. When I started talking with my students and other graduates from other institutions, the clarity of what they were going to do after college life was murky at best. Surprisingly, the majority of the graduating seniors did not have any idea of what they were going to do.

Perhaps, it is generational because Millennials have a different outlook than Baby Boomers. In my last job strategy book, I along with my coauthor, William Bailey, researched this problem and found a huge disconnect between what organizations desired from potential employees, and what today's job seekers expect of employers. This article explores 10 new job strategies for recent college graduates in how to increase their success in employment.

Loaded with the right attitude and good job strategies, recent graduates can ensure themselves of better success in this job market.
The economic picture should give recent college graduates some hope. According to a recent National Association of Colleges and Employers, the top bachelor's degree, which would be in the highest demand, was business administration and management. Of the 169 surveyed employers, 86 stated they intended to hire graduates with this degree. In another college employment study by CareerBuilder.com, 74% of employers planned to hire more recent college graduates this year (up from 67% from 2016). Half of these employers planned to offer recent college graduates higher pay than last year; 39% of these surveyed employers would start recent graduates with $50,000 or more (compared to 27% in 2017). In today’s competitive environment, getting a job in one’s major is not easy. In fact, more experienced and older workers are now competing for entry-level jobs.
The following are job strategies for more employability: 1.
Possess a good character that makes you an attractive person.
2. Connect your ideal job with your interest, skills/ abilities, and value/belief system. The most sought after majors for these employers were: Business (30%), Engineering (26%), Computer and Information Sciences (23%), Engineering (16%), Communications Technologies (13%), Mathematics/Statistics (11%), Construction Trades (11%), and Health Professionals/Related Clinical Sciences (10%). With this positive job outlook, college graduates cannot afford to relax because of the continual changes in the job market.
NEW JOB STRATEGIES Recent college graduates must enhance their job strategies. In today's competitive environment, getting a job in one's major is not easy. In fact, more experienced and older workers are now competing for entry-level jobs. Companies are more demanding due to the surplus of seasoned and young talent before them. According to the Economic Policy Institute, one in eight colleges graduating class of 2016 were under-employed. Underemployed relates to those individuals in the college-educated workforce that are doing jobs that don't require a college degree or not in their intended major. With that said, those unemployed individuals would prefer to be working in their major full-time. In the Office of the New York City Comptroller's 2016, the study found that, by 2014, Millennials were making about 20 percent less in real terms than what older generations made during their first years in the labor force. Thus, recent graduates cannot afford to misunderstand the job market. Peter Cappelli, the author of Why Good People Can't Get Jobs, notes that the impersonal nature of the current employment process: "Like a replacement part, job requirements have very precise specifications. Job candidates must fit them perfectly, or the job won't be filled, and the business can't operate." In a surplus market with numerous potential candidates, employees can be picky. When a list of prospective applicants does not meet the requirements, many times, these positions are left unfilled. Sadly, most job seekers have not figured this reality out. Yet, loaded with the right attitude and good job strategies, recent graduates can ensure themselves of better success in this job market.

Build an effective personal brand, including an online personality connected to LinkedIn and critical online networks.
4.
Pursue additional education and certifications (i.e. Google digital marketing certifications) that separate you from the competition.
5. Use daily positive self-affirmations about your skills and abilities to keep your energy level positive. 6. Build an incredible professional network for identifying job opportunities. 7.
Learn how to seek out critical advice and mentorship, but develop the capacity to use it.
8. Develop a questioning attitude about life to promote problem solving. 9.
Network with subject matter experts, industry leaders, and highly successful people to increase your job opportunities.
10. Target desired positions and apply periodically (daily, weekly, etc.) so that you are actively engaged in new employment. In today's difficult economy, college graduates must be more assertive despite the positive forecast for employment. Getting a job isn't easy. This article demonstrated how recent college graduates can increase their chances of being hired with 10 new job strategies. In fact, many Millennials will face future employers that have a variety of job options to fill a job vacancy. Individuals who understand the new mindset of current employers will have a better chance of successfully navigating the employment landmines. Yet, a savvy job seeker understands these employment changes and makes the necessary corrections to make his/her personal brand attractive to potential employers. If individuals want to be more effective in their job hunt, they can use these job strategies to navigate future career challenges.

Q: I would like to move to another country to work for a few years. I have thought of several like Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Azerbaijan, and Brazil. I don’t know anyone in any of these countries, but I fi gure I will meet people at my job. Can you tell me what the fi rst step should be? -Rosenberg, Texas Reader A: The first step would be to check the immigration rules for each of those countries to see if you qualify for permanent residency. For instance, New Zealand encourages people with specific skill sets to apply for visas because they are trying to fi ll positions where there are chronic or immediate shortages. Australia has a Skilled Immigrant program. As you should expect, Azerbaijan is trickier, and not a really good choice for immigration. Britain seems to be very interested in entrepreneurs, and Brazil has new laws as of December 2017 granting equal rights to immigrants. Once you have determined through research that you would be able to emigrate to a specifi c country, you should see if your work experience would allow you a job that would pay a living wage. You can go to your bank, and using your Social Security number, open a sole proprietor checking account. Title the account with your full name, then DBA — doing business as — and the name of your business.

After the income goes in, and the expenses come out, what’s left is profit. That’s what you’ll end up paying taxes on. Following up on paid-off debts is always a good idea. It wouldn’t hurt to write, and request formal, written confirmation that everything is paid in full. You can do this through email, so you’ll have a record of contact, or you can send a certified letter — return receipt requested — through the postal system. That way, you’ll have a record they received the letter and signed for it. It sounds like you spent a lot of time paying off your student loans. After an experience like that, you don’t want to have to deal with greedy or dishonest collectors hounding you years down the road, and no way to prove you’re free and clear.
