Over 1400 HR recruiters filled the auditorium for the Society of Human Resources conference devoted to recruiting. Hundreds attended my workshop that I just gave at the SHRM Talent Management National Conference in Chicago last week. I was able to share my knowledge with eager recruiters. And I am summarizing here what recruiters were learning and talking about.
BIG DATA IS COMING ON STRONG
Expect to see more test and specialized assessments as companies embrace making selection choices based on the big data they now are acquiring. Data also tells the company how much it costs to fill a job and time to find a fit. That influences the salary a company pays to find the talent they need.
VIDEO JOB POSTINGS ARE COMING
Companies think these video posts help you learn about their culture and brand. Expect to see smaller and midsize organizations jump on this trend.
EMPHASIZING GETTING EMPLOYEE REFERRALS TO FILL JOBS
This was spoken about a lot throughout the conference. Employee referrals hold the most weight with HR and with the hiring manager. Networking and getting your resume sent in to HR by an EMPLOYEE moves you to the top of the list to be considered. Well worth your time. LinkedIn can be very helpful in finding the right connection.
GIG ECONOMY WILL CONTINUE TO GROW
JOB CANDIDATES ARE CHECKING ON CULTURE
A surprise report was that 75% of all job seekers are looking on Glassdoor about the company culture and salaries BEFORE they accept a job. Many want to know what others think. It has a powerful influence on their decision to accept an offer or turn it down.
SEARCHING ONLINE INCREASES
Companies are much more aggressively expanding their own search for talent looking outside their geographical region when needed to find the necessary people. Some have very difficult jobs finding any people to do their necessary work. Hardest people to find? Those willing and wanting to do Blue Collar and trade jobs.

Once you evaluate the security of your job then you can decide if you think you need to look for another job. You have a job right now so looking for another one may not be a priority. If your company is looking to be financially in the red, you may want to consider it.
With layoffs being in the news every day, what is
an employee supposed to do if his employer decides to do salary cuts or benefit cuts instead? You may be faced with this situation and wondering how long your job will be secure for. Here is what you can do if your employer decides to do pay or benefit cuts as opposed to layoffs.
Surviving A Pay Cut: Is Your Job Secure?
This is a huge question and an even bigger source of worry. When an employer starts to cut salaries it is a sign that there is a financial problem within the company. However, it does not necessarily mean that the company is ready to go belly up. First, take a deep breath. Start to evaluate your company’s track record and financial past. Is your company trying to proactive and stave off the company’s impact of an economic downturn? It is easy to see how your company is doing if your company is publicly traded. A better way to determine the financial stability of your company is to look around you. Is there as much work as there was last year at this time? If there is less work, has the company made the proper adjustments to their budget? If the answer is no, then there may be cause to worry. Hospitals have been in the news lately since they are normally the ones that are impacted about a year after a recessions starts. Many hospitals across the country have started anticipating the decrease in insured patients and have started cutting salaries and even laying off some support staff. This does not mean the hospital is in financial trouble right now, it means that they are anticipating a slowing of income. Then evaluate your history with the company. How long have you been with this company? If you are at the bottom of the food chain, then you probably have cause to worry. Have you been a consistent good performer? To evaluate an honest answer to this question go over your previous years’ reviews. Also look at how you have been performing over the previous twelve months. If you see a decrease in your performance then it is possible that your employer might have noticed it too. Keep in mind that many companies are being pro-active in

The other possibility is to ride out the trouble. If you do this and the company still folds then at least you may be eligible for unemployment benefits. There are definite risks to switching jobs at this point. For starters, beginning at a new company will put you at the bottom of the seniority list. If the new company starts to have financial trouble then you may be the first to go and if you have not been with the company for at least twenty weeks then they are not obligated to pay you unemployment. Do your best to make sure that any new company you look into is financially secure. Use the same evaluation tools that you looked at with your previous company. If you can, talk to the employees about the company. Do not just ask questions about the company; try to evaluate the feelings of the employees. If they all look happy and secure then chances are they feel that way about their jobs. You can even get a sense of this as you walk in and out of an interview.
Surviving A Pay Cut: Personal Finance
News reports have companies cutting hours and salaries by up to fifteen percent. If you are one of those employees who had his salary or hours cut then you need to make some financial adjustments quickly. The good news is that prices on food and gas have also been on a steady decline. If you have not prepared financially, then the good news is you can start immediately. First gather all your bills and see how much money you are paying every month. You will need to create a budget if you do not have one. The easiest expenditures to cut are entertainment, food, and the extras. These extras include such things as clothing or books that you might spend miscellaneous money on every month. Make a conscious decision to not buy anything extra until things stabilize. Shop for grocery sales and only buy what you need. Pick an amount of money to spend on food and stick with it. Take that amount out in cash if you have to. Once the cash is gone then you are done with the food shopping. This may help you be more aware of how you are spending your food budget. Surviving A Pay Cut: Evaluate your bills
Do you have the premium cable package? How many cell phones with all the options do you have? You can cut a little bit on these bills without really missing anything. Call the companies and change your services. Drop your cable down to a lower package. You do not need unlimited texting on your cell phone. You may find that you can drop your house phone and just use your cell phone. You can also save money on childcare. Childcare costs can take a huge chunk out of your monthly budget. If you can, consider tag-team parenting. Tag-team parenting can save you up to $8,000 per year. There are some sacrifices to this type of childcare but the savings may be enough to counteract the sacrifices. If, after your pay cut, you still have a little extra money then put that money into a savings account. Do not touch this money because this is your emergency fund in case you get laid off. If you prepare for the worst then you can hope for the best.

General Motors may have started the trend that cutting the employer match to the 401k accounts was a good way for the company to save money. This does not mean that you should stop contributing. This may seem like an easy way to make up for your salary cut but it can really hurt you in the long run. Compounding interest in your retirement fund is what will allow you to retire. Without this, you will have to work longer. Plus, companies that have done this in the past have reinstated the company match once the economy stabilized. You do not want to lose the additional retirement funds.
