BUDGETING FOR
NOVEMBER Courtesy of DaveRamsey.com
In November, we travel and we eat. We shop for Christmas gifts, and we eat some more. The best way to enjoy this time of year, and not lose control of your money, is to make a budget for the month’s special costs. With that in mind, here are some budget items to be ready for in November:
COOKWARE
HOLIDAY TRAVEL
Are you hosting Thanksgiving Day dinner for your family, or bringing your favorite side dish to a potluck? Either way, you’ll need pots, pans, and casserole dishes. Cookware discounts can be as high as 80 percent in November, so it’s a great month to budget for them if you need to add or replace an item in your collection.
Plane tickets and hotel rooms aren’t the only travel costs to account for this time of year. Snacks at the airport, Uber or cab rides, parking garages, tips, and extra gas money are some of the smaller expenses that can slip under your radar.
HIGHER FOOD COSTS Plan your Thanksgiving recipes ahead of time, so you can wow friends and family with your cooking (and budgeting) abilities. If you’re hosting out-of-town family for more than a day, you’ll want to budget even more for extra meals and restaurant visits.
SHOPPING The last weekend of November is when you’ll find all the big, crazy sales. Set aside some money so you can take advantage of the great Black Friday and Cyber Monday discounts on things like clothes, televisions, and other technology.
CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS You’re probably excited to string up lights as soon as you’re done eating turkey on November 26th. If you’re also in the mood to buy a peppermint scented candle or a new Christmas wreath, make sure to set aside money to pay for it.
HIGHER UTILITY COSTS Low temps mean high heating bills. Keep your budget from getting burned by increasing the amount you plan to pay for electric or gas heating.
PET BOARDING Just because you got an invitation to Aunt Elizabeth’s fancy Thanksgiving dinner two states away doesn’t mean Fido did. If your pet isn’t making the trip with you, make sure to budget for boarding fees.
Remember, when you make a plan for your money each month you’ll have more peace of mind. And who doesn’t want to enjoy their turkey in peace?

Offshore Jobs How to Leverage Prior Trade & Military Experience Into a Great Offshore Job By Julian Gaston
In this article we discuss transferable experience that tradesman and prior military can leverage into fast-tracking themselves into jump-starting their new offshore job and career. One of the obstacles even experienced workers may encounter when applying for offshore work is not having worked offshore before. Often, the interviewer will ask this question even before asking what position the applicant is applying for. Fortunately, this obstacle is one that is easily overcome.
Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/expert/Julian_Gaston/307482
Everyone working in the offshore jobs market faced this question at the start of their career, and managed to get past it. The solution they employed is one easily employed by anyone namely, being able to concisely point towards prior experience as sufficient reason to be considered for employment. The key is to point towards experience that is easily transferable into an offshore work setting. If you are an experienced tradesman, or have prior military experience, you already have a huge advantage, as these are the types of employees that most rigs are looking for. However, even if your prior experience would qualify for you for a higher-level land based position, it is to your advantage to accept offshore work that may be a step down the totem pole, and then work your way higher by proving yourself and your abilities. The opportunities to do so will be almost unlimited. There is a good reason for this. Regardless of your skill levels as an electrician, mechanic, painter or pipe fitter, or any other job category, it takes time to become familiar with the distinctive differences in operations in an offshore environment. Mistakes will be a part of the learning curve, and the lower you start on the totem

pole, the less serious those mistakes will be. So it is better to learn the ropes of your particular trade and how it translates when working on an oil platform, rather than starting at the top, then falling down because you weren't familiar with the specifics of how your trade operates in a seabased environment. With that caveat, there are multiple job categories in which to apply your prior land-based skill sets that will enable you to gain employment offshore in an accelerated fashion.
Skilled and Semi-skilled Labor Skilled and semi-skilled tradesmen with no prior offshore experience can point to their existing work history at any of the following, as people with these skills are always in high demand. This is only a partial list; there are many more positions and job titles than this, and if you have experience in any of these areas, you will a huge advantage when applying for an offshore job: • • • • • • • • • • • •
Electricians Welders Scaffolders Painters Riggers and Crane Operators Pipe Fitters Mechanics Fork Lift Drivers Warehouseman and Storeroom Personnel Divers Medics and Nurses Dispatchers and Radio Operators
Prior Military If you have prior or current military service, you have a huge leg up. Your military training will be a huge plus in your hireability. Much of the excellent training you have received in the military is directly transferable into a new career working offshore. This applies to numerous military job categories. Welders, electrical workers, technicians, mechanics, truck drivers, those with jet aircraft and helicopter maintenance, turbine and diesel engine experience, and numerous other jobs all have valuable experience to bring offshore. Being former military gives you another advantage - your value in the eyes of your future employer. Personnel managers love prior military, as veterans know how to follow instructions and orders, and are trained in reacting to emergencies, a real plus in an offshore work environment. So the advantage that tradesmen and former military enjoy when applying for offshore work is quite substantial. That hard earned experience can easily be leveraged into a high paying and adventurous lifestyle that will make you the envy of all your land based family and friends. What are you waiting for? Julian Gaston is a freelance writer, chef, webmaster, and adventurer, and an in-demand expert on the energy industry.

CABLE TECHNICIAN INSTALLER
Q: How could someone use their own money in banks as retirement money if they didn’t have a pension plan like social security from the government? What if they never worked social security? -Houston, Texas Reader A: That is a huge question, and I’m going to start by correcting a misconception. Social Security is not money from the government entirely. Social Security taxes are taken from every paycheck, matched by your employer, and sent to the Social Security Administration. When one retires, the money that was paid into the system is returned to you in monthly payments. However, the average retiree receives about 1/3 more than they paid into the system. That leaves the system to be funded by current and future workers who will also pay into the system. If your question is, “Can one save money for retirement?” of course. If your questions is whether you just put it into a bank and park it, or invest it to increase your income, the answer is yes to both. The decision is strictly personal and based on income and investment ability. Q: I don’t really know what to include in my resume. I have done a lot of things at this company that I didn’t really enjoy. I’ve also done some things I enjoyed a lot, and I wonder how to say that in a resume. -Houston, Texas Reader A: You really can’t say that in a resume. Instead, you can emphasize the skills you’ve mastered that you really like and enjoy. Don’t mention things you hated doing. Your resume is an advertisement that says, “This is who I am.” When you apply for a job, try to make sure that the requirements fi t your expertise. If you work 2080 hours a year, you should try to make sure that the work is something you enjoy. Why spend all that time doing things you don’t want to do? Q: I always check the company website to see if they list a dress code before an interview. I also look at any pictures that they have online to make a decision about what to wear to the interview. I wore nice jeans and a navy jacket the other day, but I was surprised when the interviewer had on a suit. I was trying to refl ect their image, but I sure didn’t expect them to be so professional looking. I haven’t heard from the company and wonder if it’s because I was too casual. -Tomball, Texas Reader A: I don’t know why they haven’t contacted you. It could be that they haven’t made a decision yet. It could be a lot of things. Here’s the deal on your strategy of trying to match the every day look of the offi ce: you aren’t an employee yet!! Don’t wear jeans. Don’t dress like you are just ambling through life without a goal. Employers want to know if you have the good sense to dress appropriately if they send you to meet with clients. It’s all a question of respect: the interviewer showed you respect with his attire. You didn’t show him the same courtesy. -If you have any questions about interviewing, hiring, or work, I’d love to hear from you. Due to the volume of response, not every question will appear in the column, but most questions will receive an email response within 2 to 3 days.

Careers with a Bachelor's Degree in
CRIMINAL JUSTICE By Jennifer Jacobsen, Licensed Social Worker
According to the Ohio State University, students studying criminal justice "learn about the dimensions of the crime problem, explanations of the prevalence of various types of crime, and the various agencies and programs designed to prevent and control crime and delinquency." Students entering the criminal justice field, therefore, tend to have an interest in studying and preventing crime and providing rehabilitation to those who commit crimes. If you are interested in majoring in criminal justice, you probably want to know about your job prospects and how much money you can expect to make when you enter the workforce with a criminal justice degree. The average starting salary for criminal justice graduates is $39,622 per year, as reported by Michigan State University's Collegiate Employment Research Institute, but salaries can increase with time, and they vary depending upon the specific job a criminal justice major holds. Here, learn about various career paths you can take with your bachelor's degree in criminal justice, as well as how much money you can expect to earn with each potential career.
Probation and Parole Officers As a probation or parole officer, your job duties would include the following: supervising a caseload of individuals who are on probation or parole, completing home visits and monitoring clients to ensure they comply with the terms of their probation, referring clients to rehabilitation programs and services to reduce their risk of committing future crimes, and appearing in court hearings to update judges and magistrates on clients' progress in meeting the terms and goals of their probation or parole. Because probation and parole officers work specifically with individuals who are involved with the criminal justice system, this line of work is appropriate for graduates who have earned a degree in criminal justice. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the average probation officer earned $50,160 per year in 2016. Job outlook is average for jobs in this field, as the BLS has reported that job openings will grow by about 6 percent through 2026.
Court Reporters
46
NOVEMBER 2, 2018
As a criminal justice major, you will gain knowledge of the criminal justice system and the court process, making you qualified to work as a court reporter. Court reporters attend court hearings and type
a transcript of the court proceedings; they must be able to type quickly and accurately to depict exactly what transpires during a court hearing. While a high school diploma is typically sufficient to become a court reporter, having a bachelor's degree will give you an advantage over the competition. This is especially useful, as there is likely to be considerable competition for open court reporter positions. According to BLS data, only 600 court reporter jobs are expected to open up between now and 2026, a rate of growth which is slower than the average for all occupations. The average salary, according to the BLS, is $51,320 per year.
Corrections Officers Corrections officers supervise inmates who are incarcerated in jails and prisons to ensure that they comply with rules and regulations. They might also be responsible for documenting inmate behaviors and maintaining incident reports, in addition to checking through inmates' personal belongings to ensure they do not bring contraband into secure facilities. You can expect significant competition for corrections officer positions, as the BLS predicts that there will be a decline in job openings through 2026; salaries are slightly lower in this field than for court reporters or probation officers, at $42,820 per year, on average.
VOL. 23 ISSUE 1164
Paralegals
Court Clerks
Investigators
A criminal justice degree provides graduates with a knowledge of the legal system, preparing them for work as paralegals. As a paralegal, your job duties might involve typing and editing legal documents, corresponding with clients, attorneys, and court staff, researching case facts and laws prior to court appearances, scheduling meetings, answering telephone calls, and sending and receiving fax messages. The typical salary in this field is $49,500 annually, and job openings are expected to grow much faster than average, according to the BLS. In fact, the BLS expects 41,800 paralegal job openings between 2016 and 2026, making this field a lucrative option for criminal justice graduates.
Court clerks earn an average of $39,160 per year, according to the BLS. Court clerks prepare court dockets, maintain court records, issue licenses, accept payment for fees, answer phone lines for the court, and interact with the public. A criminal justice degree is excellent preparation for working as a court clerk, especially in a criminal division of the court, as a criminal justice education provides students with an understanding of the court process. Criminal justice degree programs also teach students about the nature of crimes, which allows criminal justice graduates to understand the information contained in court dockets and court records.
Investigators work for organizations such as banks, insurance companies, or credit card companies to investigate crimes like fraud or identity theft. Because criminal justice majors are knowledgeable about different times of crime, including internet crime, they are well-suited to work as investigators. The typical pay for investigators is $48,190 per year, with annual pay in the insurance and finance industry being slightly higher, at $54,850, per the BLS.
Police Officers and Detectives Criminal justice graduates are well-prepared to work as police officers and detectives, due to their knowledge of crimes and criminal behavior. Police officers patrol their local areas to deter crime, and they arrest offenders who have committed a crime. They also document incidents of crime, appear in court to testify, and issue traffic citations. Detectives investigate more serious crimes such as drug trafficking, rapes, and homicides; they interview victims, suspects, and witnesses, and refer criminal cases to the appropriate court system. The median annual pay for police officers, sheriff officers, and patrol officers is $59,680 per year; pay for detectives is considerably higher, at $78,120 per year, as reported by the BLS.
VOL. 23 ISSUE 1164
Case Managers Criminal justice majors are also qualified to work as case managers, who oversee clients' services, link them to needed community resources, provide assistance with transportation, serve as a liaison between clients and other treatment providers, and help clients to access benefits such as food assistance or housing. Criminal justice majors might work as case managers in drug and alcohol treatment programs, as their criminal justice background provides them with knowledge of the relationship between drugs and crime. They might also find success working as case managers in community mental health agencies, where clients with mental health issues might be referred by courts to receive treatment. In addition, criminal justice majors can work as case managers for child protective services agencies, because positions in this type of setting require knowledge of the court process, as families involved with child protective services might also be involved with the juvenile court system. The BLS classifies case managers as social and human services assistants, and the average pay for this classification of workers is $31,810 per year.
Conclusions and Future Directions While it is not exhaustive, the list included here provides an overview of the job opportunities that might be available to you as a graduate with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. There do appear to be a variety of career possibilities for criminal justice majors, ranging from direct field work, such as police and detective work, to more clerical roles such as paralegals and court clerks. Criminal justice graduates who want to open the door to more job opportunities or to increase their earning potential can go on to pursue graduate education in related fields such as law, psychology, or sociology. Those who choose to obtain a law degree can pursue careers as attorneys, judges, or magistrates. Some criminal justice graduates might be interested in pursuing a doctoral program in psychology and working as clinical psychologists. With a doctoral degree in criminal justice or a closely-related field like sociology, you can teach or conduct research at colleges or universities.

One thing pre-retirees never talk about but should by Robin Ryan
As I was setting up for my Retirement Reinvention workshop, I was talking with Michelle the Meeting Planner for a corporate program and she said “I’m staying for your class tonight because I haven’t announced it yet, but I’m retiring in six months myself. You know whenever people here talk about retirement they only discuss two things – money and where are you going to live. So when I read your Retirement Reinvention book it was such a surprise. I kept underlining so many things and I learned so much. You hit on all the other things we need to discuss but never do, especially how we will spend our time. I just never really spent much energy thinking about that. It was an eye opener.” Michelle wasn’t the first baby boomer to bring this my attention. While there are plenty who make lists of all the activities they will do when they are done working, there are others who keep themselves on the job because they have no idea what they would do if they stopped. First and foremost you need to have a retirement plan on how you will spend your time. Here’s what happened to one lady who came about this whole retirement thing in a typical way thinking only about the finances part. Colleen was a high flyer inside three large Pharmaceutical companies that she’d worked for. She had been regional Sales Manager and moved up to the Executive Director spot focused on her prestigious job and earning her commissions and bonuses. She was very successful and a complete workaholic. Then her husband Bob got cancer at age 58. He was a fun loving, teddy bear of a man who loved life and enjoyed experiences, travel, socializing and parties. Over the next three years, she watched her beloved husband fade away little by little. At 61, Bob’s life was over. In her early 50s, Colleen’s whole view of life changed. “I was alone with no children and losing my husband had a profound effect on me,” she said. First, as she grieved she recognized that she no longer needed to earn as much income as possible to build up a big war chest. If her money was well invested, she could have a great life and retire. “I realized life was not about the next project and sales numbers, it should be about being with family, living life and making memories,” explain Colleen. At 56, she left work. “I had no plan. I had nothing to fill the days. No idea what I’d do. It had all been about work before I retired” she stated. Now three years later, she says she is so busy her volunteer commitments. She met a NOVEMBER 2, 2018 50with
wonderful man and recently married him. To celebrate turning 60, they went on an African Safari. “The safari had been a far off dream,” this vibrant woman noted. “It had been on my bucket list. So we decide to go. It was unbelievable. I’ll admit it was very expensive but I want to experience things now. I’m really healthy and fit so I plan to do the activities and see the sights I’ve never had time for when I worked, and I want to do them all now while I can.” Giving back is also important to Colleen. She reported she averages about 15 hours a week working at two different charities. They make her feel like she is doing something meaningful. “In my work role I was never removed from my office before. It was work, work, work. I’d go on a short vacation but I always did emails and returned business calls. Now, I am so free! It’s a luxurious experience. But I have learned that time is so precious and things can change on a dime. I’m making the most of my retired days” Colleen declared. Career and personal identity are very closely linked for those who, like Colleen work a great deal. Doctors, Lawyers, CPAs, Architects, Dentists, executives, engineers, and professionals – many of these people have devoted their lives to their profession and it is something that they have loved. Some have been workaholics spending 60 or more hours a week at a demanding job. Many do not know how to live outside that professional world. Many are scared to retire. Although they may be tired or burned out, the fear of the emptiness ahead of them if they leave their current job behind is too overwhelming to face.
Am I describing you? If so, your future requires some definite planning and new ideas. Planning out your retirement and reinventing a new life for yourself may involve uncovering some new interests and a new way to live and enjoy your life after you leave the current career behind. No it won’t be the same. Endings happen – sometimes unfortunately before you want them to. Keep in mind, almost all of us will retire. You will lose the job (and the stress, hassles, politics and commuting grind). The perks will disappear. Work acquaintances will go on networking but no longer include you. Hanging on, won’t make it easier. To become a successful retiree, you need a new game plan. A solid important direction that makes you feel excited about living this new stage of life. That is essential for your future well-being.
Getting Started You Need a Plan Think about how you might want to spend your time. Think about hobbies that have interested you but you never had opportunity to do them. Make a list and if you can’t think of any go online and just type in hobbies and a hundred will pop up. What sports might you want to try? Consider a new one maybe tai chi or swimming? They are great for your body and health. Check out local clubs and community centers near your home. There may be a lot of resources around that you never noticed before. Start now and make a comprehensive but flexible list. Join a few things now so you are slowly breaking into some activities before you stop the job if at all possible.
Time for new dreams Think about two or three big things you’d like to do in the first 18 months of retirement. Maybe it’s a trip to a place you’ve always wanted to go on but never had the time. Consider an experience like hiking a big mountain or going to a gourmet 5 day cooking class. Maybe it’s a fancy cruise to somewhere exotic. Perhaps you want to start a charity or go on some service mission trip. What’s important here is that you begin getting excited about things you are going to do. Get the travel book, research the experience and start planning the experience. A lot of joy comes from thinking about what you are going to do. Create new personal goals and fun activities to make your new life appealing and exciting. It must be something you really long to do. Make sure these are dreams you can check off rather quickly and then add in new dreams as soon as you complete them. Dave Says BY DAV E R A M S E Y

STRAINED RELATIONSHIP OVER BORROWED MONEY? Dear Dave, I borrowed some money from my parents in January, and it took a few months longer to pay them back than originally planned. Since then, I’ve noticed our relationship seems to be strained. They will sometimes make remarks about money when I’m around, and it’s obvious the things they say are aimed at me. I don’t want things to be like this between us during the holidays. I have taken steps to become more financially responsible, like watching my spending and living on a budget, so how can I address this issue with them? Robbie Dear Robbie, I’m sorry you’re going through this, but I hope everyone has learned a valuable lesson. It’s okay to give money sometimes, as long as you’re not enabling irresponsible behavior in the process. But loaning money to or borrowing from friends and relatives will often lead to bruised feelings. If you paid them back, especially if it took longer than expected or agreed upon, there’s not much you can do if they choose to hold a grudge. With some folks, it just takes a little while for those kinds of things to heal. And considering it’s your parents, my guess is they’ll become more and more forgiving with time. Until then, maybe you could look for opportunities during conversations with them to mention your new approach to finances. Something as simple as referring your budget, or getting excited about how much you were able to put into savings from your last paycheck, might get their attention. A few subtle hints that you’re actively working to gain control of your finances might go a long way with your parents. If they realize you’re starting to handle your money more wisely, I’ll bet you’d start to notice a real difference in their attitudes! —Dave
